Can I relace my BT Home Hub 2 with an Airport Extreme?

Can I replace my BT Home Hub 2 with an Airport Extreme?

No. The HomeHub has a built in modem that must be used to access your Internet service.
The AirPort Extreme is only a router. It does not have a modem onboard.
You could the AirPort Extreme with the HomeHub....but not instead of the HomeHub.

  • How can I set up a WD My Cloud with my Airport Extreme - I can't get it to open ports 80 and 443?

For remote internet access to the WD My Cloud Mirror, I have been advised that ports 80 and 443 must be open in order to reach the WDMyCloudMirror.  My Motorola Gateway (Surfboard SB6141) is connected directly to my Airport Extreme (WAN port) which is in turn connected to the WDMyCloudMirror (all by ethernet cables).  I do not have FULL instructions on how to properly manually configure the Airport Extreme to open the ports.  I have tried an earlier posting which provides many of the steps, but not all of the required information is included (how to determinge the IP address to be assigned, etc.).  I did the best I could with the information given, but the test using "YouGetSignal" showed the ports as still closed and attemps to reach the WDMyCloudMirror by the internet failed as well (of course).  The WDMyCloudMirror has enough Apple "stuff" included in it (software, I suspect) that an Apple legal acceptance is required for its set-up, yet Western Digital Tecnical Support is unable (or unwilling?) to help with this aspect of its configuration required to work within the Airport Extreme environment.  I have returned the WD My Cloud Mirror to Amazon as "not able to work", but I have not given up the hope that I can eventually get the ports open so that I can get this cloud device, or one similar, to permit remote internet access.

Port Forwarding.....or Port Mapping....as Apple calls it is a difficult and complex configuration method for most users. Because there are so many variables involved in this type of setup, it is not possible to provide a step by step guide that will work for everyone with all devices.
It is possible that a setup guide exists for the the WD drive and AirPort Extreme, but you will have to go looking for it on the Internet. Even if you find one, it may not be tailored to your specific situation or needs.
Sometimes, you can do everything right....at least according to someone's article or "how to" guide, and things still will not work correctly.
In situations like this, when you really don't know what to do, you need to enlist the aid of an IT pro, who will know what to do based on your particular products and unique circumstances. Sometimes....they won't be able to get things working either due to particular circumstances.
But, before you do this, I would strongly recommend that you use a Static IP address for your Internet connection with your ISP. If you do not have this now, contact them to ask them if they offer this type of connection. Expect to pay more for this type of service, of course.

  • How can I set up a WD My Book with my Airport Extreme

I just got a WD My Book and want to set it up as an external drive for back up using Time Machine.  I have an Airport Extreme and using the USB port hooked it up to the Airport.  With in the Airport Utilities I am able to see the WD My Book when I click on manual and then go over to disks.  Im at a loss now at this point.  How do I finish this off and get Time Machine working?!  I opened up Time Machine and there are no disks that show up for me to select.  I am hoping someone can help me out!!!!!

Are you sure on this? I read the support article, but unless there was a recent upgrade that changed this, I was able to do this for some time using an Airport Extreme
I'm sure it's not supported by Apple. Here is what Apple says:
Time Machine can’t back up to an external disk connected to an AirPort Extreme, or to an iPod, iDisk, or disk formatted for Windows
Now, to clarify......I never said that  you could not do this. I said that it was unsupported.
Most of us who have tried this find that oddly....it does work....for a period, sometimes a few weeks, or even a month or two....before you start to have corruption issues.

  • Accessing Home Hub 4 with windows 8.1 and Internet...

    Hello
I can no longer access my home hub manager wirelessly running windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer 11 from my toshiba laptop by either typing in the IP address or by http://bthomehub.home/. I can still access it by either method from a laptop running windows XP. I have Infinity and Home Hub 4a. This problem has arose recently and I did upgrade from windows 8 last week so could this be the problem. Has anyone any suggestions?
    Regards
    Adrian

Seems to be a Network Adapter problem for most people, and usually updating the driver works.
If you have just installed 8.1/8.1 pro, you will typically need to install your motherboard and other driver software. After you have done this, most people can access the internet, but have problems with the bt hub ip/url access link.
To update the Network Adapter(s) use the following steps:
    1. search for Device Manager, and open it up
    2. Select/expand Network adapters, and the adapter(s) on your machine should show up.
    3. Right click on the adapter(s) that appear and select 'Update Driver Software'
    4. It should come up with 2 options - select 'Browse my computer for driver software'
    5. The next screen should come up with the default location for your machine, so just click the next button on the bottom right of this window.
    6. Your network adapter(s) will appear, and just select 'update driver software' and the latest version will be installed.
    7. That should fix most problems right away - if not, your machine (including hub and router) may need switched off and back on.
I can't guarantee it will fix every problem, but the most common problem seems to be that the latest network adapter drivers needs a manual update after installing 8.1/8.1 pro, even after you install your motherboard / ethernet drivers.
If you still experience problems accessing bt hub or internet, you can try this additional step:
    1. On your keyboard press Start + X keys (or microsoft logo key + X)
    2. This should open up system options dialogue box at the bottom left of your screen.
    3. Select Command Prompt (Admin) option.
    4. In command screen (old DOS screen) type the following: ipconfig /release (there is a space between config and /)
    5. This will release your ip address back into the network and cut your connection (don't worry)
    6. Whilst still in command screen, flush the dns cache - type: ipconfig /flushdns (space here again also)
    7. type exit to get out of command screen.
    8. Switch off your pc, and switch it off at the wall, also switch off router & bthub.
    9. Wait a few mins before flicking switches back on at the wall only - dont switch on pc yet - wait a min or so then switch on pc.
    10. You may need to run through the updating network adapter drivers again from the steps at the top - although this should not be needed.

  • Replace Home Hub 4 with Netgear DGN2000?

I recently switched to BT Broadband from NewNet and replaced the Netgear DGN2000 ADSL wi-fi router that I had been using with the Home Hub 4 supplied by BT.
I am finding that the wi-fi coverage provided by the Home Hub 4 is not as extensive as that provided by the DGN2000.
Can I replace the Home Hub 4 with the Netgear DGN2000 and, if so, what username and password would be required to access BT?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I would suggest that you start by resetting the Netgear to factory default, to remove any existing configurations. Then start again via the setup wizard, if there is one.
You normally need to enter a password in the second field, use a password of BT.
    Encapsulation: PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
    Multiplexing Method: VC-BASED
    VPI: 0
    VCI: 38
Normally if it fails to authenticate, you are automatically directed to a BT Wholesale website.
I am assuming that you are still on an ADSL connection, and not BT Infinity with the Openreach modem?

  • Can't connect to my home wi-fi with new Iphone 5?

can't connect to my home wi-fi with new Iphone 5

When you say it doesn't detect the network - is that under "Settings->Wi-Fi"? It doesn't show your network at all?
This may sound like a stupid question but since I've learned never to leave any stone unturned - you don't have your SSID set to "hidden" do you?

  • I have recently changed my bt home hub and now my airport express won't connect to it? Any suggestions?

I have recently changed my bt home hub and now my airport express won't connect to it? Any suggestions?

Anytime you change out a modem or modem router like the HomeHub, the AirPort Express needs to be reset back to factory default settings and then set up again.
The reason for this is that the Express is retaining some or all of the settings to connect to your "old" modem or hub, so it will not work correctly with a new device unless you start over again from factory default settings on the Express.
Power up the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the side of the Exprsss for 8-10 seconds, then release and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Now, set up the Express again, like you did originally with the "old" modem or hub that you had previously.

  • Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

I have a Airport network at home with a Time capsule connected via ethernet cable to modem. Also the network is extended wirelessley with an Airport Extreme. I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • Can I use the Ethernet Port for a computer when it is also used as a wireless network with an Airport Extreme as the access point for the wireless network

Can I use the Ethernet Port  of the A1264 Airport Express to connect to the Ethernet port of a computer that does not have wireless capability when the Airport Express is also used on a wireless network with an Airport Extreme 5th generation as the access point for the network?
    I have AE 5th gen
looking to buy (from ebay) the AEX A1264
Various computers, printers and hubs for the network
    Is this possible to do?

Bob, Thanks for the info. I have read different articles that said yes, but I wanted to make sure before I commit to buy. I have an older A1084 which I could not use the Ethernet port. I know at one point I was able to when I was on 10.4. Now that I am on an Intel processor and 10.8 I am going to have to upgrade some of my Apple wireless hardware.
    Thanks Again.

  • Can an encrypted USB drive be used with the Airport Extreme?

I would like to keep an encrypted USB drive hooked up to my Airport Extreme (A1354) so that I can use it for a hand archive of documents I might need to reference on the road or conveniently within my home, mainly because it would be handier than having to plug and unplug a USB device into whatever computer I'm using, and would allow my wife to do the same with her computer. I know most internet providers provide a service like this, but I figured why not just do this with my Airport Extreme?
I've read posts from people who have taken encrypted USB volumes generated from their MacBook Pro, and plug that USB device into the Airport Extreme. The Airport recognized the device exists, but it is you can't actually use it as an encrypted volume. This seems like a flaw on the part of Apple if you can't do this, as this device is a much more expensive solution that what most wireless routers provide.
Has anybody figured this one out?

    Doubtful it's going to work.
Does it see the same disk if it's formatted just Journaled (ie, not encrypted)?
The tehnical article isn't entirely clear . . . it just says Mac OS Extended:  AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule: USB storage device supported formats and protocols
It was last modified June 14, 2011, a couple of weeks before Lion was released with the ability to encrypt drives.
Note that ExFAT is supported on Macs effective with 10.6.5, but not Airport Extremes; there's no reason to think encryption is any different.

  • How many devices can I use with an AirPort Extreme Base Station?

How many devices can I use with an Airport Extreme Base Station? Devices included a mac, iphone, ipad and pc laptops.

The AirPort Extreme will support up to 50 wireless devices and 200 wired Ethernet devices. I would imagine that this would probably be adequate for most homes.

  • Can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 Wireless Printer with the AirPort Extreme Base. The printer is NOT connected at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, and is placed in another room. It worked just fine with my previous router (Linksys WRT54G). Help me!

    Hey Guys!
I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
    Can you help me? Please?!
    Thanks Folks!

This must be a tough one, no suggestions at all.

  • Can't print to a Canon MF 4690 wirelessly through Airport Extreme

I cannot seem to figure out why this isn't working. I just replaced a Brother printer (7 years old) that worked great wirelessly through my Airport Extreme with a Canon imageCLASS MF 4690. I found, downloaded and installed the drivers for it (10.6), but when I set up the printer, I can only print using a generic PCL driver. When I choose the Canon UFR driver, I get an error every time, when printing wirelessly or when directly connected via USB. I can see the Canon in the Airport Utility, but it won't print.
    What can I do?

Welcome to the discussions, Joe P.!
    +What can I do?+
You might try Apple's Printer Troubleshooting Guide to see it that provides some help.
Keep in mind that not all printers are compatible with the USB port on the AirPorts, so that may possibly be the case here if the troubleshooting steps don't provide a solution. Apple does not furnish a list of compatible printers, so unfortunately it's a process of experimentation to see your device will work with the AirPort Extreme.
