Can i remotely connect to my external hard disk from my iPhone/iPad?

Hello,
I just bought a new apple time capsule.
Can i remotely connect it with my mac without a static public IP?
I read that i can not reach it remotely anymore for iPhone en iPad since the last update, is that correct?
So than i want to connect my external connected hard disk. Is this possible with my iPhone or iPad?
I heard about filebrowser but it doesn't work well.
And what about apple TV, can i stream from my TC?
Can anybody explain how i can fix this?
Thx
Macbook Pro 2012, iPhone 6, iPad air 2, Apple TV

Apple have no method to connect iOS device to the TC at any time.. LAN or WAN.. so any method you use must come from 3rd party app.
I heard about filebrowser but it doesn't work well.
It works as well as any other app can. Remote access must be based on a network protocol and the only ones supported by Apple are AFP and SMB.
AFAIK people have not been successful getting AFP based file apps on iOS to work remotely although I have not checked closely for a while.
So you have to use SMB.. and at least filebrowser has instructions.
http://www.stratospherix.com/support/gsw_timecapsule.php?page=6remote
It is however unsafe opening SMB at any time. And I suggested people try it with different ports instead of obvious ones.. but that didn't work so why it needs to be 20445 I don't know.. but it does make it fairly obvious.
The alternative method which is really the only safe way to do this is using a different router.. one with built in vpn servers. These used to be expensive but you can buy them now for less than $100.. or use routers with 3rd party. You have to move the TC to being bridged and used as WAP and switch. However that is not a major issue. The vpn router will include a standard ddns client so that fixes not having static IP.
And iOS has good vpn clients built in or app add ons.
VPN is the right way to do this.
And what about apple TV, can i stream from my TC?
TC is a dumb hard disk in a router.. it has no media extensions. Apple TV is not a media player.. it is a streamer. So you must have an application which can stream from TC to the ATV which means you need a computer with iTunes or you need ipad and some software that can read files and stream it.. obviously apple built the system for itunes and itunes pretty much exclusively.
If you get a WD live TV it can play source material directly from TC.. because it is a true media player. Apple TV cannot.

I can not save any data to external hard drive from my mac pro. Is there anyone can help me in this regard?( note, when i first plug my ext. drive to mac i chose option to backup later)

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

  • Can't access iPhoto library on external hard drive (from Mavericks days) now that I'm running Yosemite on my Macbook.

I have an iPhoto library on an external hard drive (from when I had Mavericks), but now that I've upgraded to Yosemite, "Photos" won't open my iPhoto library. Ideas for how to import that iPhoto Library into Photos?

What is the file system of the external drive, and how is the drive connected?  DO you get an error message? If yes, which message?
You can only open a library on a directly connected drive, formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).  If the drive is correctly formatted, hold down the alt/options key while you are launching photos, and then select your library from the Library Chooser Panel.
If the library is not listed in the panel, use the "Other Library" button.

  • Can't erase anything on an external hard disk partition of bootable backup ____error message -50 "Error in user parameter"

    I am using MACOSX 10.6
The data on the disk partition  on my Iomega 2Tb external hard disk drive (labeled "Bootable Backup") was written by Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC ver. 3.37)
I have had problems with overwriting this using CCC, and I have also had troubles changeing the data on my "Versioned Backup"  partition, using either CrashPlan or CCC
A third partition that was virgin ("Half-Tb Volume") on the same external disk drive, however, DID accept the latest CCC bootable backup of my Macintosh HD...which is the reason I want to recover rthe space on the first bootable backup partition.
I have not found any links to this error using Google search, apart from the definition.
    Anyone

Do a backup using Time Machine or a clone. Then boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart. Run Disk Utility Repair disk. If it can't repair the disk, then select the erase tab and reformat using Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Also click the Option button and select GUID. When complete, reboot normally and restore your data.
Please update your profile to reflect the OS you are running.

  • Can Time Machine back up an external hard disk?

I store some data files in the internal hard disk together with the boot volume, and some other data in an external hard disk. I intend to buy a second external hard disk solely for Time Machine. How can I set the Time Machine to back up BOTH the internal and the first external hard disk (that contains data)? Many thanks for answering this.

You can't. You must copy the data off, reformat it, and copy it back.

  • Protecting an external hard disk from copying

I have an external hard disk with 120+GB of teaching resources in what may soon become a semi-open access environment. I would like to set up the drive so that a user can view files on it but not copy them onto a CDR or another external drive. Is this possible? I tried setting "permissions", but I could get the effect I was after.
    G4 PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It isn't possible. If a user has permission to read files on the volume, the user then has permission to copy and save them to another location.
I'd be more worried about your files getting trashed. External drives are very insecure. Even if you try to enforce permissions on them, as soon as the drive is plugged into a Mac, the user will have full read+write access to all its contents by default. That's the nature of external drives.
So I'd start a comprehensive backup regimen to protect the data on the drive, or try a network storage solution on which permissions can really be enforced.

  • Why can't I connect to my external hard drive anymore through my AirPort extreme?

I have a WD 500 GB external hard drive connected to my AirPort extreme that I have been using just fine for some time now. All of a sudden, I cannot access the files on the hard drive and when I try to connect to my AirPort in finder, the connection fails. What can I do to fix this?

If I restart my Mac it notices them
This is puzzling. You should not have to restart your Mac for drives to mount.
Also I plugged the hard drive directly into my Mac and had to restart it before it noticed it
Same as above. You should not have to restart the Mac for the drive to be recognized.
Connect the drive directly to the Mac and restart the Mac if necessary to mount the drive. Then run Verify Disk using Disk Utility on the Mac. If repairs are needed, run Repair Disk. Locate Disk Utility as follows:
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
See if the drive is recognized at the AirPort Extreme. Post on your results.

  • How can I get my LaCie external hard disk icon to reappear on my desktop?

The iMac discussion section does not seem open to me asking this question. It's geared to the Intel Macs or other categories which do not allow for me to type in the following question:
    Bottom Line Question:
How can I get my La Cie external hard disk icon to re-appear on my desktop?
    Background:
    I clicked Go > Computer
At that point there the usual set of icons in the far left hand column, including one for my LaCie external hard disk. Near that icon there was a dark upturned truncated/shortened arrow. I absent-mindedly clicked on that dark arrow, and at that moment I could hear my LaCie external hard drive power down; I heard the sound of hardware powering down.
The LaCie external hard drive is sitting right next to my iMac and its blue light is ON so I know that at very least I didn't turn it off.
    But where is it?
And how can I get it to reappear on my desktop?
Right now when I click onto Go > Computer, the LaCie external hard drive disk is NOT THERE.
    Thank you.

James, yes. I put the question in the iMac section and did get some solutions. My LaCie external hard drive is back now. I was aware that the arrow is connected to Eject actions, but was concerned when I went to Finder Preferences and selected the LaCie to show up on the Desktop, and its icon did not show up on the desktop. I hope you and your family are enjoying the weekend, James. But how could you not: You have little Kate there with you. Lorna in Southern California

  • Can't mount my external Hard Disk

I bought a new mac book. I have been using an external Hard Disk with the laptop i am currently using. I tried to connect the 160GB external hard disk to my mac and it doesnt mount. It worked well for the very first time I connected, but then it showed up some error msg that the disk has been ejected improperly and the data might be lost. It doesn't even show up in the disk utility after I connect it. It works fine with my thinkpad though. Could someone help me with this....
    Help is greatly appreciated....

    hi there--
try an smc reset of the macbook http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 and then see if the drive is recognized then. if not, then try a different port if there is one available, or try a different external device with the same connection type to see if all devices with that connection type aren't recognized. good luck.

  • PSE 9 Organizer & external hard disk

Can the PSE 9 Organizer handle external hard disks, DVDs, etc. that are not always online? By the way, I searched and I couldn't find this specific question asked before.
I use a laptop pc and only keep about 1 year's photos on it.  I have a  couple of external hard disks that keep a backup of the current photos  on my laptop plus all my old photos going back many years.  The external  hard disks are usually not connected to my laptop, but I would like to  be able to see thumbnails, search, etc. for all my photos and then if I  want to open the actual photo and it is on an external disk I would like  the Organizer to either give me an error that says the disk isn't  connected or prompt me to connect it or something.  This is the same  issue you would have if your photos are backed up to multiple DVDs.
Can the PSE 9 Organizer do this?  If not, what does it do if a disk isn't connected?  Thanks!

99jon, thanks!  That is very helpful and that link you provided gave some good info.  That answers part of my question.  The other part is about the fact that I have all my photos backed up to 2 external hard disk with only about a year of the most recent photos also on my laptop hard disk.  The photo folders look like this on all 3 disks:
laptop hard disk, drive letter C:
    p-2010-12
    p-2010-11
    p-2010-10
    p-2009-12
external hard disk 1, drive letter X:
    p-2010-12
    p-2010-11
    p-2010-10
    p-2001-06
external hard disk 2, drive letter Y:
    p-2010-12
    p-2010-11
    p-2010-10
    p-2001-06
I assume that in the beginning I would have to connect drive X and then tell the Organizer to import all the photos on drive C and drive X.  What will the Organizer do when it sees the duplicate folders (p-2010-12, etc.) on the 2 hard disks?  Will it recognize the ones on X as being just backups of the ones on C?  Of course, over time there will be new folders created (p-2011-01, etc.) and they will get backed up to X and Y.  Also, over time some of the older folders on C will be deleted (p-2009-01, etc.).  When X is not connected will the Organizer show that the photos on both C and X are available, but the ones only on X are not available until I reconnect X?  Okay, then when we add disk Y into the mix how will that work?  For example, if instead of connecting X I connect Y which has the same folders on it as X will Organizer recognize those folders and photos and let me access them as if it was X?
    Thank you!

Your help help shall be gretaly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Get Disk Warrior that will repair the problems without requiring that you reformat the drive - $99.00 on a bootable CD. Will not work on a FAT formatted drive.
You will need to use Drag and Drop to save your files by copying them from the bad drive to a good one.
    To reprep the drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Lion on external hard disk?

Can I install Lion on an external hard disk and run main MBP computer from there, leaving that main computer with Snow Leopard?

Yes. However, better is to put a bootable backup/clone of your SL installation onto the ext HD and install Lion on top of it. That way all of your users, settings, and documents will be there.
