Can I Rename my new i mac? initial set up has named afetr me and I would like to change this.
Any ideas?

Open System Preferences-> Sharing preference pane and rename the Mac to whatever you want.

The instructions in my previous post will change the name that appears on other computers that are connected to the network in the Shared section of the finder. This is also the name that shows up on the sign in screen under the OSX logo.
To change the account name displayed where you sign in, go to System Preferences > Accounts and unlock the pane. Then edit the Full Name field for the account. You can also change the Password. Be sure to lock the pane when you are done.

Can't rename folders on Snow Leopard Server

I have 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Server running on a new Mac Mini server. Attached I have a Pegasus Raid storing all my files. I have a sharepoint set up for every project we work on but a couple act strangely. Users can create and delete folders but can not rename them once created. In order to rename they must drag the folder onto the desktop, rename and then replace the folder on the server. All permissions are set up identical to the other sharepoints which work fine. I have had a couple so-called "experts" look at the permissions in both the terminal and Server Admin. Everyone seems stumped. Any ideas?

Thanks for the input but I finally soved the problem. Here is what I found...
Although I had given users/group the ALLOW/FULL CONTROL premission with a sharepoint, I discovered that in Server Admin if you double-click on the User or Group name under the ACL permissions that a drop down box appears. This box allows you to fine tune the ACL but it appears that by default all of the boxes are not checked even though I granted the user Full Control. After checking all of the boxes I was able to create and rename folders in my share as expected.
This also had an similar effect if I denied Full Control. Some of the boxes remained unchecked and it left holes in my system where denied users could still access some files. Again by checking all boxes these holes were closed.
Does anyone know how to change the default so that all boxes are checked when assigning the Full Control permission?

Can't rename symlink

I suspect this is more of just apple turned their products into crippleware instead of a real problem, but I'm tying to put a symlink to my documents folder in my dropbox... But I can't renamed it. Why? And since I WILL rename it, even if I have to hack it, is there an offical way to do this?

I actually have a solution to the problem. I had to do it in terminal from the directory I already wanted to be in. So it can be done, just not from the finder. Since that is a little akward for a Mac, I still am wondering the correct way to do from the finder.

Can I rename my Macintosh HD Hard Drive? I had a recent problem with After Effects not loading. It's a brand new iMac and had a clean install of Adobe Production Premium CS6. I do have a few plugins installed that I purchased from Video Co-Pilot and Mocha AE. But I can't imagine those plug-ins were the culprit. However, I did rename my Hard Drive prior to the not-loading problem.
Could renaming my Macintosh HD have had an effect on that? Or am I being paranoid?

When I set up a new Mac I always customize the boot drive name so that they is easy to identify on the network. Never had a problem, but then again I've never renamed a drive after installing a bunch of software. Every drive on my network has a unique name.

Thanks for the info. On your Mac......
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the picture of the AirPort Extreme
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window that appears
Edit/backspace out the Wireless Network Name and type in a new name that you want to use
Click Update at the lower right of the window
Wait a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart
Close AirPort Utility
The new network that you named will use the same network password that you set up originally.

After upgrade can no longer connect to Mac from Windows

I have a wireless network (Linksys) with 2 iMacs, Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP workstations. I have file sharing between the Windows and Mac computers. After upgrading I can no longer see the shared folders on the upgraded iMac from the Windows box. I cannot even ping the iMac by node name, but I can ping it by IP address so it is recognizable on the network. I cannot connect by IP address, however.
I have file and printer sharing enabled on the Leopard iMac. What can I do to restore the former connection?

Thank you! That partially solved the problem. I can now see the Leopard Mac and can open my user folder on it. However, the subfolders give an error saying they are not accessible - permission denied. I have gone through the folders and set all of them to Shared, but this did not make them accessible.

With 10.4, sharing my Mac to my windows PC was really easy. Now that I've installed 10.5, my PC can no longer see my mac's shared folders.

For some reason, the systems preferences will not let me set a workgroup for my mac. I type in the workgroup name for the mac, and click save, and then when I go back to look at it again, it doesn't appear to have saved the workgroup name I typed in. So, if the workgroup name is the problem, I can't appear to fix it. why isn't it saving this information?

To set up file sharing:
Choose Apple > System Preferences, and then click Sharing.
Select the File Sharing checkbox.
Users you have set up with accounts in Accounts preferences can access your computer by connecting to it over the network.
To refine user access to your computer and set up specific folders or volumes to share, click Add {+} at the bottom of the Folders list and select the folder you want to share.
To further refine user access, click Add {+} at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Accounts preferences), Network Users or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Select the user from the list and click Select.
After the user is in the list, use the triangles next to the user name to assign privileges for that use user (No Access, Read & Write, Read Only, or Write Only (Drop Box)).
Click Options and select the way you want to share your computer: using AFP, FTP, or SMB.
If Windows users will connect to your computer to share files, make sure SMB is selected, select the On checkbox next to the name of the account that will share your computer, and enter the password for that user.

You could partition the drive into 2 partitions. One formatted as HFS+ for Mac OS X back, and one formatted as NTFS for Windows backup.
You would have to move the drive from system to system to do your backups. If there are 2 systems, I would suggest just getting separate drives for each, unless they are both laptops, then you will be disconnecting the drives all the time anyway.
Unless Windows is running in a virtual machine on your Mac. Then a partitioned drive would be fine.
