Can I replace my combo drive with a superdrive??

hello all,
Can I replace my combo drive with a super drive? I see on some of the tech do it yourself pages the G5 17" original imac is supported for changing it out by your self. but how do I go about buying the superdrive...and from whome??
thanks,
marc

As to the DIY installation...I purchased an OWC Mercury 8x dual to replace my combodrive, but the installation directions that everyone refers to on the apple support site says nothing about removing the mounting cage to use in the replacement installation. Am I missing something here? Sure, I can remove the three mounting screws that holds the cage to the drive, but then I'm left with the welded bracket that does not seem to want to move. OWC support was no help at all. Is there a trick to this?

  • Can I replace a 1TB drive with a 2TB

I own a first generation Time Capsule with a 1 TB drive (6,106.) The light just started flashing amber and the message with Airport Utility is "Internal Disk Needs Repair." Assuming the drive has gone south, can I replace this 1TB drive with a 2TB one, or is there a BIOS restriction.

It is just time.. the TC were designed to run too hot for the power supply to last.
The fan should be running all the time as indeed they do in the new versions. The supply will be on the edge and in fact what you are experiencing maybe power supply.. it depends.. if yours is Gen1 with 1TB hitachi drive I have yet to see a dead drive.. lots of dead supplies.
If you have Gen2 they changed to WD black.. and lots of the drives are dead.. the typical WD fail 3 spin ups and then nothing. Tell me if you have A1254 or A1302.. from the bottom rubber Mat top line.
New Green drives are lower power consumption but due to their design of spinning down whenever possible they have a bigger motor for start up.. it pulls 2A at 12V and the power supply in the early TC cannot sustain it.
So if you replace disk you really need to replace power supply.
I have a lot of suggestions.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
    And even repair kits.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
But the design is fully explained.. so if you want to DIY you can.
I have had several people come to me after upgrading the hard disk and finding it then didn't work.. due to power supply being on the edge and a replacement with external 12v supply fixes it.
But is it economic.. ?? That is the question.. If you have a Gen1 with an hitachi drive it could be worth it. As the drive could still be good.. pull it out and test it.
Otherwise buy a second hand Gen4 with 2TB drive already in it. They sell for around $180 here if you shop well. A Gen4 is cheaper than power supply plus hard disk repair for a Gen1 or Gen2 and you get 50% faster hard disk access with the same drive... (TC are processor bound and later ones have 50% faster processor) and better wireless. Or get a new TC.. which is a big jump in price but comes with full warranty.

  • Replacing A CD Driver With A Superdrive

I bought a used Powermac G4 for my mother-in-law. It reads CDs, but I want her to be able to burn her own CDs/DVDs, or read my CDs/DVDs, so I want to replace the current drive with a superdrive. Can anyone recommend any particular (internal) brand/model?

    Hi-
Pioneer has the best native support, and builds a good drive.
Older models from the DVR-109 to the current DVR-116 will all work.
The DVR-116 is a fine drive.
In OS X Panther and Tiger, you will need to install the freeware Patchburn to get full burn support from iapp's, like iTunes, iMovie, etc.

  • Can I replace my optical drive with internal blu-Ray player?

Basically what the question says. I have a MacBook Pro mid-2009, and I'm wondering if I can replace the optical drive with an internal blu-ray drive.  I would want to be able to read and write to regular CD and DVD still though, that's a must. Also, if there is an internal drive I can put in, will OSX Mavericks support playing a blu-ray movie just because my computer can read it?
Thanks for any knowledge or advice you guys can offer!

    No.

  • Can I replace my CD drive with a 1.8 inch SSD?

I recently bought the OWC Data Doubler that replaces the CD drive with a 2.5 inch hard drive. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDAMBS0GB/ My initial plan was to put in a regular hard drive but my external SSD's usb plug broke off and I'd hate to throw out an otherwise good drive. It's a 1.8 inch micro SATA so it would be too small normally. (pic for reference http://i.imgur.com/FAwFBZq.jpg ) So I guess my question is: Is it still possible to use my SSD and can I somehow fit it in the Data Doubler instead of another hard drive?
Links to things I can buy would be helpful.
Thanks to anyone who can help!

This link has enclosures and adapters for 1.8" HDDs.  Perhaps one of these items can put your 1.8" HDD back into operation:

  • Can I Replace My OS Drive With A SSD?

I currently have 4 drives in my Mac Pro Tower and would like to replace them all (including the OS drive) with SSD's. Can I?
    TIA

If you want to look at your options, I'd first consider the 10K VelociRaptor before dropping couple thousand. Also you have an open lower optical drive bay, then use the ODD ports on the logicboard for two drives.

  • Can Apple replace iMac 24" drive with a solid state drive?

Can Apple replace my early 2009 iMac 24" drive with a solid state drive?

An Apple Store will most likely refer you to a local Apple Authorized Service Provider for that type of work.
Go to > Support > Find an AASP > click the Service Box > enter your Zip code and call some of those AASP's to see which one's do that type of upgrade.

  • Can i replace the optical drive with a adapter to house an extra hard drive

so i want to put one of these http://compare.ebay.com.au/like/321126164672?ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&cbt=y&_ lwgsi=y&item_id=321126164672
will it fit and will my computer run faster if i have it ?

It isn't going to do anything with the speed of your computer.  It will give you more storage so you can store more things, but nothing with the speed of the overall computer.  What would speed it up is to get a faster hard drive then the original one installed which can load data faster, however, putting in a second one isn't going to unless it was faster and you had the OS installed on that one.

  • Can you replace the Super Drive with the diskdrive from my macbook pro?

Iv been playing with the idea of replacing the disk drive in my macbook pro with an extra SSD for a bit better performance as its extremely rare I actually use the disk drive.
Would it be possible for me to get it installed into my iMac? The one currently in it is history and I'm looking to sell it asap.
    Thanks.

I doubt they would. But there is no harm in asking. At the least they would chrage you a labor fee.
Imac's aren't the easiest computer to take apart. I think the cover glass and screen has to be removed to do any work on it.
you should go to ifixit.com and see if they have a tutorial on changing parts in your model imac.

  • Can I replace the DVD drive with a BlueRay Burner?

I have the HP Pavillion a6647c. I assume so but don't know if it takes more power. I learned from an ealier lost I can't really upgrade my video card as my power supply isn't strong enough. 230W I think.
Just incase some knows this answer too......my goal is to burn my HD movies off the hard disk and on to blue ray disks. Currently the playback of the movies on the PC is a bit jerky and I've been told by Canon I need a better video card. Will a movie I burn to a blueray also be slightly jerky on my TV through my blueray player or is it just when played on the PC?
    Thanks

Yes,  you can update the DVD burner to a Blu-ray buner.  A movie that you have burned to a Bluray disc should play smoothly on your Blu-ray player. Your PC and your Blu-ray player are apples and oranges.
    Kind regards,

  • Can I replace my Matshita CD drive with a superdrive?

I just purchased a G5 and was thrilled when I saw how easy it would be to transfer all of my old home video to dvd using imovie and idvd, however when I went to complete the first project my machine informed me that I would not be able to burn a DVD.
Can I replace my current drive with a superdrive?
If not, can I use an external burner?
    Message was edited by: robsclean

You should run System Profiler to confirm it is not a superdrive. Only a few models of the iMac G5 had a combo drive.
You can get an external superdrive. OWC has some.

A drive with FireWire may provide better performance.

  • Swapping combo drive for a superdrive

Hi: I am considering purchasing a 1.5 ghz macmini (off of ebay with remaining apple warranty) that contains a combo drive. If I do, is it possible to replace the combo drive with a superdrive, or am I left with only the possibility of an external dvd burner? Thanks in advance.

I've done it to four Mini's so far. This Pioneer DVR-K05 works great and is dual layer.

There are many guides on the Internet and I'm assuming you are comfortable working on a computer.

  • Replace Combo Drive with Superdrive

2 years ago I bought this Pbook G4 with Combo Drive. Then, during "our" journey, I found out that this Combo Drive was not quite satisfied me. So I have plan to upgrade/replace the Combo Drive to Superdrive.
My question: is it worth to replace my old Combo Drive with Superdrive? And do you know how much does it cost? Including labor?
    Many thanks.

Ok, thank you for the infos.
It'll cost me Rp. 2,5 million plus Rp. 200 thousand (labor) for trading my old combo drive with new superdrive. It's a little bit expensive here.
    I live on Jakarta, Indonesia.

  • Can I replace the 20G drive in a 2070NR to have two 1T drives?

I have an Envy 17 (2070NR) and it has a 1T drive and a 20G drive.  Can I replace the 20G drive with another 1T drive?

The second, 20g drive is a flash module that is designed to speed up the system and hold important files so that the mechanical hard drive is not accessed as often, leading to better battery life, etc. blah blah. I am not sure the 20 gig drive is a standard SATA interface. You might want to look here:

You will need the hard drive caddy for a second drive I believe.
