Can I Replace or Extend the Fiber Optic Cable?

There is a cable that runs from the Verizon box outside of my house, comes into the basement corner  of the house, and plugs into the router.  Do I assume this is fiber optic cable?  This cable is about 3 ft long which is problematic in getting a good signal throughout my house.  I would like to move the router up one floor.  All the other cords and cables are long enough to do so.
My question is what is this cable called and can I replace it or extend it myself?  If so, is there any pertinent information I would need to know to do so such as part names and where to get them.  If not, how do I get a longer cable installed.
I am not tech savvy and grateful for any help.

No.  The fiber optic cable attaches to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which is usually outside.
For speed tiers < 100Mbps, the installation is usually coax from the ONT to your router.
For speed tiers > 100Mbps, the installation is always ethernet from the ONT to your router.
If the cable from the ONT is indeed an ethernet cable, you can certainly replace it.
The ONT has a standard RJ45 jack which the other end of the cable is connected to.
You can confirm if you're connected  via ethernet in two ways.
1)  The WAN ETHERNET light on your router should be lit and the WAN coax light should be off.
2)  The ethernet cable should be connected to the white WAN port on the back of your router.
Since your ONT is outside, replacing the ethernet cable presents a couple of problems..
1)  When VZ installed the cable, they passed it through the wall, then sealed the opening with silicone.
You need to make sure you can fit a preterminated cable through that opening unless you're capable of terminating a cat5 cable yourself.
2)  You need to reseal the opening with silicone.
An easier option is an RJ45 coupler.

Yes, but they will charge you a truck roll to do so.  $88 or so.

    Hi,
The specifications for the HP Touchsmart 520-1049 indicate that a 35 watt MXM video card can be used.
HP Partsurfer doesn't show a  MMX card as a spare but if you call them they might have something listed under another Touchsmart.

I have an iphone 4 and it's not working, if i pay can apple replace it with the same model even though it's no longer for sale?

If the iPhone has not been opened or serviced by other than Apple
or authoriized service provider (there are a few other requirements),
you should be eligible for out of warranty replacemement for $149 US.
Apple maintains sufficient stock for replacements even for iPhones that
are no longer available for purchase. You may be better off upgrading to
a newer version than paying $149 to stay with the iPhone 4.
What is no longer working? If you provide more details as to the problem
and what troubleshooting steps you have taken, some one may offer
    a solution.

  • How difficult/costly is it to install fiber optic cables?

I live in an area that has no underground cables, or fiber optic cables and I've lived with this 1.5 MB DSL connection for about 4 years now.  Yeah, it sucks.  I was curious as to what is the biggest factor when it comes to installing fiber optic cables in an area and how a company determines as to where they are going to be located.  Thanks in advance.

Installing fiber optic cables is not just a "how hard is it?" question.    yes, the business considerations do take into consideration the physical issues (how hard it may be [above ground and below ground]), but there is more:   Can the company get City\county\state PERMITS to do so?  What engineering problems are there? (mountains, existing drainage or other water culverts, etc.?)  and then there is also the business consideration of 'how much uptake will be realized if we install the fiber cable?' (how many users in the neighborhood?)
fiber optic technology (to the premises) is here and will not go away (more like CAN NOT go away), however, until the economy picks back up, it may be cheaper for more people to see how much more can be squeezed out of the existing technologies (DSL & cable) before they want to switch to what may cost more for them.  SO, in your area, the company may not be able to get the permits, maybe just not yet, who knows?   They may also not see customer uptake in your area, yet.
You may not be aware, but Verizon has recently sold-off whole states and partial states-worth of fiber-to-the-premises accounts, in what could have been Business decisions based on profit for stock holders.   -If their investments to install it will not be recouperated within the time limit required by their stock holders, it may not be installed for a while.

  • Trace Fiber Optic Cables

    Hi Folks
How to trace Fiber Optic Cables,I m Working in environment where no Fiber Optic Documentation  and I Don't know how cables are running between fiber patch pannel on the rack on access switch and the fiber backbone .no label to start working and prepare documentation

Are the fibres carrying live traffic?  If they are not live you can trace them with a red light source, its like a pen that has a laser that operates in a visible wavelength, heres one I found which seems to use very bright LEDs:
    http://feedthenetwork.com/cable-and-satellite-tv/visible-light-use-for-fiber-continuity-testing
And this one goes 10km with a laser:
    http://www.dhgate.com/10km-red-light-pen-fiber-optic-test-fault/p-ff8080812b2e44e5012b48263732532d.html
With everything you get what you pay for and cheaper ones will not go as far as the more expensive ones.
With my laser based red light source I see a break in a fibre patch cord and I can also put a gentle bend in the fibre and it will leak out the side of the sheath.
I hope this is obvious but DO NOT look into the end of a connector EVER, you can't see 1310nm or 1550nm but it will give you a very cheap laser eye surgery job and will almost certainly damage them beyond repair.
If the fibres are live you may have to disconnect them to see which port goes down, thats the safest way to do it anyway.

  • Sfp and fiber optic cabling

    Hi,
I would like to ask if i can use our existing fiber optic cabling after i purchased a cisco 2960 with 4 sfp uplinks also, i purchased sfp modules for each switch. Does it mean that i only need to purhcase a converter from ST for SFP?
    thanks

If the fiber type is compatible with your transmission type (single mode versus multi-mode) then all you need is to correct the physical connection.
You can change the connectors (or, more likely have them re-terminated by a pro ... it can be tricky) or use a jumper with the compatible connectors on each end (like SC-to-ST, SC-to-LC, whatever).
It's usually bad practice to use multi-mode fiber in a single mode application or vice-versa.
For multi-mode applications, you may get difference performance for the different flavors; 50/125 MMF tends to get longer distance than 62.5/125 for GigE.
    Good Luck

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Connecting iPod to stereo with fiber optic cable???

My kingdom for the right answer to this question.
I'm brand new to the whole iPod scene. Just bought an 80GB video iPod and I want to use it with my stereo system instead of the old bulky 200 CD carousel.
I see that I can connect the iPod and stereo using the AV connection kit, but isn't there a way to get digital audio sound quality with some sort of fiber optic connection?
Will the Monster iCable Fiber Optic Kit work? It doesn't list the iPod as a use, but it sure looks like the non-Fiber optic end would fit into the iPod headphone jack.
If anyone knows, I'd greatly appreciate the help. I'm a total newb about this and haven't had any luck with my online searches.
    Thanks in advance.

Typically, the fiber ends are terminated into a patch panel, using SC or LC connectors. Then jumpers attached to the patch panel to the equipment.
A pigtail is just a fiber with one enter terminated with a connector and the other end a bare fiber. You can splice (fusion or mechanical) the pigtails to the fiber cable ends and install them in a patch panel.
It is difficult to install connectors on singlemode fibers so installers purchase factory made pigtails or they purchase preterminated patch panels to terminate (connectorize) the fiber.
Connectors can be attached to multimode fiber in the field using polishing equipment or special mechanical connectors (depending on the volume of connectors).
There are all sorts pre-terminated products (cables, connector modules, patch panels, etc) on the market that reduce the need for the user to field terminate the fiber ends.
I've attached a couple of links, one for product and one for fiber basics.

  • Fiber optic cable part number for s6500

    Hello
I need help because i have Catalyst S6500 24 port X2-10G-SR card but i cant find Fiber optic part numer to conect.
Does anyone know the part number?
    Thanks

With what type of fiber connectors is the fiber you had installed terminated? SC, LC, ST? Is it terminated at fiber patch panel. Also, do you know what type of fiber they installed? Post a picture and it should be straightforward to tell you what you need. Since your running 10G LRM you should use OM3 multimode (OM4 is ok too), hopefully that is what's installed.
So you'll need OM3 jumper cables of sufficient length to get from your Meraki to the patch panel (if they installed one). The SFP+ end of the jumper will have dual-LC connectors and the other end, whatever they have at the optical patch panel.
    Definitely post a pic.
    Cheers.

  • Extending the USB–Lightning cable

I have a lovely new iPad mini Retina. The USB-Lightning cable that came with it is very short. I'd like to extend it. I assume the simplest (and probably cheapest) way to do this would be to get a USB extension cable, one with a female plug one end and a male the other. Correct? If so, do I need USB2 or USB3? I'm guessing 2, but not sure.

Just my opinion, but the easiest and least expensive way to extend your cable .....use a common household extension cord. That's what I use. Plug the cable from the iPhone/iPod/iPad into the power adapter and plug the power adapter into an extension cord. Buy a white cord and you will have a nice color match

  • I made a mistake & loaded the version of Firefox (4) that my computer cannot support. Now I am unable to use it. How can I replace it with the latest one I had previously (3.6.20)?

It's my own fault. I was warned that my old iMac (running only on Tiger) was not capable of receiving Firefox 4. But I did an experiment and tried loading it anyway.
Now, a disabled version of Firefox, that I cannot open, is the only version of Firefox on my computer. I'm sure it made everything I was using on Firefox disappear!
Is there some way to replace this disabled version with the latest one I CAN support?

Downgrading from Firefox 4 to Firefox 3.6.20
    1. Visit ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.6.20/mac/
    2. Find your language and Open Firefox 3.6.20 folder
    3. Download and install Firefox setup file (3.6.20 dmg)
You’ll be automatically downgraded to Firefox 3.6.20 and your favorite add-ons, bookmarks and settings will remain untouched.
    thank you

  • Can a replacement LCD have the same exact defect?

I brought my 24" iMac in because there was a pixel anomaly/stuck red pixel in the center of the screen. As I'm a graphic artist, it was very annoying.
I brought it to the Apple Store where the Genius agreed to have the display replaced.
I went to get it today. When it was booted up in the store I noticed the same defect in the same exact place.
    How is this possible?
They are replacing it again. The Genius made made mention of the "1 bad pixel is OK". I was hearing none of it. They agreed to fix it the 1st time. All I want is the issue to be addressed and fixed.
He also made some ridiculous remark that it's possible for a new display to have the same exact defect in the same exact place. I can't believe that there are two displays with a stuck pixel in the exact same spot. And, I got both of them. What are the odds?

The odds are unknown, as the same manufacturer could have the same defect in the inverter board of their LCDs. I would next pursue the replacement of the inverter board. If the inverter board is not replaced, any defects in the first inverter board, would be apparent in the second. A bad inverter board can lead to a solid line from the top to the bottom of the screen. A single bad pixel could just be that same problem but much smaller in area.
