  • Pros and Cons for replacing the default user template?

    Hi,
    since I've installed a new server, I don't want to make any mistake,
    If I replace the default user template (*.iproj) by my own, is it really a bad idea?
    Am I better modifying the existing one (.plist) even if it is more work?
    Thanks

    If I replace the default user template (*.iproj) by my own, is it really a bad idea?
    While you can modify the default User Template, it is not a recommended practice to do so. Since you are managing clients via MCX, anything that you set in WGM for user preferences will be added to the user's profile at login. If you have a need for some specific application preferences that need to be added for users, configure the application on a workstation as a local user and then import the .plist into WGM. Anything else -folders or files- that an application creates in the local user prefs folders, that may be needed, can usually be placed in the /Library/Preferences, /Library/Application Support, and /Library/Managed Preferences folders on the clients so that users have access to them.

  • How can i replace the default search engine (Yahoo...) with Google, when I write a word at the address line?

    I recently installed FireFox on my new pc. Whenever I type a word, for example a name of a website, I get the yahoo search resault, instead of what I had before - to enter directly to the site, or in some cases - get the Google search results.
    I would like to be able to type the website name (for example - "filefactory"), and become directed to the site itself, as it was with the previous version that I had in my former pc.

    just that that is one method, and lacks provision for working boot image and for an emergency - Lion gives a small minimal emergency boot environment but may lack all the utilities you need to use and run, even some drivers that your mac requires for add on PCIe.
    Just grab and look through Help in Carbon Copy and SuperDuper, both excellent and each has their use - together - for cloning.
    And do you have two TM backup sets? ought to consider that also, rotate daily or make a weekly set. Otherwise you are putting all your eggs in the proverbial one basket.

  • Btrfs May Be The Default File-System For Fedora 16

    Having a somewhat odd interest in different types of filesystems, I'd thought I'd share this snippet I wondered across.
    Brought up on the Fedora development list are the plans for Btrfs in Fedora, which provides a target of Fedora 16 when EXT4 will be replaced by Btrfs as the default Linux file-system on new installations.
    Fedora was one of the first distributions to deploy support for installing the Linux distribution to a Btrfs root file-system, while the Moblin/MeeGo camp has already turned to it as the default file-system, and now Fedora may finally have everything ready and are comfortable with the state of this Oracle-sponsored file-system.
    With the intended Fedora deployment of Btrfs, they will also switch from using LVM as the disk's volume manager to instead relying upon the volume management abilities built into Fedora itself. Fedora / Red Hat developers have previously already worked on taking advantage of other Btrfs features, like snapshots, to provide system roll-back support by creating a copy-on-write snapshot prior to each yum/RPM package transaction.
    In order to meet the Fedora 16 Btrfs target, Btrfs support needs to be merged into Fedora's GRUB package (or a separate non-Btrfs /boot file-system must be used), Red Hat's Anaconda must be hooked in to properly utilize Btrfs and its volume management features, and the Fedora LiveCD must be re-worked a bit to handle Btrfs. Additionally, the fsck support for Btrfs must be completed. Oracle's Chris Mason is nearly (circa 90%) complete with this task.
    Before Fedora 16 arrives we still have Fedora 15 to worry about, which will continue to offer Btrfs as a file-system option while EXT4 remains the default.
    Canonical is also evaluating when to switch to the Btrfs file-system and we may see that move similarly happen for Ubuntu 11.10.
    This would seem to imply that fedora is giving btrfs the big thumbs up! They currently release twice a year, and  fedora 15 is (I believe) Due out this May, so it wouldnt be too wrong to surmise that come Christmas btrfs would be the standard install option. However, I have always thought of fedora as being a little bit of a testing bed for red hat enterprise, so reading between the lines, I am thinking they want to release btrfs to the wild, and get the bugs sqwished so it can be incorporated into red hat, which is a good thing all round, for all concerned.
    Quote blatantly ripped from phoronix.
    wikipedia btrfs
    kernel.org btrfs

    There are, as I understand it, three big issues keeping Btrfs from hitting its final "stable" release:
    1) No true fsck (as of November, a fix is due "any time now")
    2) The logic used for subvolumes (a sort of "virtual LVM" setup) in Btrfs is wholly different from that used in Ext*, JFS, NTFS, HFS, etc; because of this, there isn't yet a single script/program that will accurately display space consumption.  Instead, the user needs to run a couple different commands and extrapolate.  A little annoying, but it doesn't affect stability.
    3) A bug in the COW aspect of the defrag command which, if run with an incorrect flag, can cause a doubling in the amount of metadata on the filesystem (and thus the amount of space it consumes).  Again, it won't wreck anything, but would make management tedious if one needs to restore a snapshot to get rid of extra cruft.
    These are all mentioned in the FAQ's on the Btrfs wiki, though the wiki doesn't give priority to any of them.  I'm guessing that, if Fedora 16 will be using this later in the year, the Oracle folks have told the Red Hat folks that they're planning on plowing through these issues very soon.

  • How do you change the default User in Windows 7 on a non-RAIDed 4 disk setup?

    Hi.
    I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on Darling my new machine, which has a four-disk setup without RAID, like this:
    SSD OCZ -OS, Programs (C:)
    WD 2002FEAX - Media Projects (D:)
    WD 1002FAEX - Pagefile, Media Cache (E:)
    WD 1002FAEX - Previews, Exports (F:)
    This setup, and because it’s unRAIDed (four separate disks), created the User file in the OS disk, right under the Programs (x86) folder, which at times causes files, which are not programs, to automatically be saved in the User file that's in the Programs disk, when in fact Programs disk is NOT meant for storage.
    Further, I cannot save stuff in My Documents because that directory leads the files (that I am saving) to the User folder in the OS disk, forcing me to navigate out of there and into an alternative disk, which is time consuming, more so than if i had a directory leading to D disk.
    So, I am wondering, can anyone help me change my directory to establish the default User folder in any folder other than C?
    Or, if can someone refer me to Windows 7 tutorials, resourses, that are a tad more than Dummy level.
    I have heard that changing around the directory as such can mess with the OS, and though not at Dummy level, I’m quite new to PC and profusely insecure about making changes to Darling at all.
    Thanks.

    Hi folks.
    I would like to update you about what happened regarding my wish to move the User location to another hard disk. Heeding your warning, i did NOT attempt that, but rather, moved the location of the My Documents folder in my Library, from its default place on (SSD) disk C:/ (which is the default location because that's where i installed Windows 7,) to another disk -  D:/ called "Media Projects".
    Here is how my directory looked before i made the change, my three hard disks were outside the Library directory that's on my SSD (Programs disk):
    (I did that by right-clicking the My Documents folder in the left column of a browser window, to access the Location tab.)
    What this did is, it put driver D:/ under Documents, which is under Library, see picture, which now enables saving documents quickly, by going from my Library directly to my D drive, however it eliminated the "My Documents" folder/possibility all together from the left-column list of folders in the Windows Explorer browser pane.
    I am now trying to do the same with Music, Pictures, and Videos, i.e. to move them to D drive, but am unable to do so because right-clicking those icons in the directory does not produce the Location tab in Properties panel, and nor does right-clicking inside the files themselves.
    Similarly, right-clicking Downloads, which i also want to have residing in my D drive, does NOT produce a Location tab in properties pane, though it does seem possible to change the directory manually...see picture.....but am wary....
    I am still monitoring my new system, and will see if and how this change effects my system's performance.
    Thanks.

  • What is the default user name and password for oracle databse 10g

    Hi: gurus, I just recently installed the oracle 10g personal edition and trying to log on to the enterprise manger, but can't figure it out the user name and password, can some one help me and tell me what is the default user name and password to logon to the oracle instance. BTW during the installation I choose two passowrds one for the schema and one for the global database orcl. I wonder will I be using one of these passwords. Still I don't have any clue for the "User Name".
    thanks

    system/manager and sys/change_on_install are still valid default passwords when database is manually created. If DBCA was used, passwords will be those defined at creation time inside DBCA.
    In case passwords have been forgotten, those can be reset:
    From an OS commnad prompt, set ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_HOME and PATH environment variables, just to make sure you are pointing to the right Oracle Home installation, and issue:
    OS> sqlplus / as sysdba
    SQL> alter user sys identified by yourNewSysPassword;
    SQL> alter user system identified by yourNewSystemPassword;
    And you're done with it.

  • Using copyprofile to customize the default user profile

    Well to get to the problem I'll just explain what I do, which doesn't work.
    1. I install windows 8.1 pro (x64) on a test-pc.
    2. After installation I press cntrl shift f3 to get into audit mode.
    3. I install all software/drivers etc. I also place shortcuts and change the background.
    4. I insert my usb, which contains a file called "unattend.xml" in which this is written:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend">
        <settings pass="specialize">
            <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
                <CopyProfile>true</CopyProfile>
            </component>
        </settings>
        <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:e:/usb/windows%207%20en%208/win81pro/sources/install.wim#Windows 8.1 Pro (x64)" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
    </unattend>
    5. After that I use CMD and use this command: C:\windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep /oobe /generalize /shutdown /unattend:F:\unattend.xml
    6. when it is done working and turns off, I turn it back on and walk through the oobe. After that my shortcuts and background are standard windows 8.1 and not the ones I used.
    Can anyone see what I did wrong? I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks!
    Btw: This unattend.xml file is created with windows system image manager of the same install.wim which is used to install that OS.
    Note: If I generalize a pc after an installation, doesn't that cancel the activation? So when I bring it to a customer he needs to fill in the activation key?

    Hi,
    After the step 5 (I mean after we customize the default user profile and reference PC sutts down), generally as I know, we should then capture image, you can boot into Windows PE and then capture the Windows installation by using DISM.
    See full guide in the link below
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/library/hh825135.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    The article also contains some conditions in which user profile settings aren't successfully copied, such as you can not use a domain account, there are no additional user accounts other than the built-in administrator account that you configured,, etc and
    sysprep will remove all the security settings of your Windows including windows activation.

  • Hi, i wanted to resize my windows partion. I was thinking of using the default backup system for windows. Then switching to mac partion, deleting the bootcamp and then restoring a new enlarged partion from the backup. Is this possible?

    hi,
    i wanted to resize my windows partition. I was thinking of using the default backup system for windows. Then switching to mac partion, deleting the bootcamp and then restoring a new enlarged partition from the backup. Is this possible?

    I see youhave gotten recommendatons for using WinClone or CampTune.  I have used both and they both work well.
    You have asked about using the WIndows 7 utility to backup your drive and restor it onto a larger partition.  I will tell you fro experience that this will probably not do what you want, and may do something that you don't want.  You can use the Windows 7 native backup tool to make a backup of your Windows 7 partition.  It will most liekly end-up making a dive image of the whole drive.  When yourestore that backup, it will try to re-create teh partitions of exactly the same size as they were when the backup was taken, so it won't increase your partition size for you.  Worse, since Windows doesn't natively know how to read./write HFS+ volumes, the backup will make a partition for your MacOS (replacing any you may have now), except that the copy restored by WIndows will be totally worthless, and you will not be able to boot MacOS from it, or even read it under MacOS.
    Now I will tell you that I've also had some fairly good success working with the free tool CloneZilla.  Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, and everything else mentioned does cost you money, I thought I would throw it out.  CloneZilla is not as easy to use as the tools mentioned, but it has worked for me int hte past, so it is something to consider.  I tend to use CampTune myself, but that was because I purchased a bundle deal for them and it was included in that deal.

  • How can I change the default URL in hyperlink inspector

    How can I change the default URL for link to external page in the Hyperlink Inspector?

    You can't change the default url in the inspector.. but an easier way to do it rather than editing the box everytime you need to build a link is to copy the url you want to link to and then highlight the text or image that users will click on and then click enable hyperlink.. when you do that whatever the last url you copied using "command" "C" will automatically be entered into that box and replace "livepage.apple.com"
    It saves alot of time if you are doing alot of links.
    Hope This Helps!

  • I exposed MiniNT as the default operating system. XP wont start

    I have a thinkPad T61 that I now updated with SP3 but I managed to mess up my partitions and more specifically the bootup partition. I am not sure what I did but when my PC boots up I now go directly into Rescue and Recovery.
    I tried to start up the PC with my XP install CD and went for R (Recovery). Somehow these are the repair options
    1: c:\MiniNT
    2: d\Windows
    Clearly I have exposed the  c\MiniNT as the default operating system and that is why I now boot up in ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery.
    I would really appreciate if somebody has some hints on how to fix this
    Thanks you

    I've tried installing, reinstalling and removing and installing itunes 9.1 but the program will not start. I have clicked on the desktop shortcut, the itunes.exe in the program folder but all i get is a brief loading hourglass and then nothing. I have checked in task manager and the programs itunes.exe and ituneshelper.exe are in the processes window but the program is not visible on the desktop.
    Starting some basic-principles troubleshooting here, if you're game.
    The first thing to try isn't a cure in itself, but can rule out some possible causes of problems, and narrow in on others. We're going to check to see if this is a systemwide issue or if it is specific to one particular user account.
    From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
    Open Add or remove user accounts (If using the Classic View in Windows Vista, open User Accounts. Then open Manage another account).
    Select Create a new account and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process. Give the new user account full administrative rights.
    Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu. Log into the newly created user account. (Don't use fast user switching to move between accounts.)
    Launch itunes in the new account. The setup assistant will/should run. Do not add any files when prompted to do so (if things get that far). Just let it eventually open to an empty library.
    ... does it eventually open to an empty library? Or do you get the same sort of behavior as in the usual user account?

  • Unable to 'set the default source system' to Install Business Content

    Hi,
    Maars here. This is my first post hoping that in future ones I'll also be lending a helping hand.
    I am trying to 'Install Business Content' under the BUSINESS CONTENT section in txn RSA1. I am doing this after 'Transfer Data Sources' in R/3 and I can now see all the data sources (under the application component hierarchy) for the source system. But I am not able to see the Info Objects in the Business Content.
    When I try to set R/3 as the default source system (got this screen after clicking a icon in the standard tool bar), BW is not saving the settings ie., I set the R/3 as the default and then click on OK. If I go back to the same screen again, I find that my settings were NOT saved.
    Could you please help me out?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    It seems to be a bug in version 3.5.
    Do like this:
    After you open the screen to <i>choose the dafault source system</i>
    Clcik on 3rd button(F6) available in the bottom of the scrreen.
    And then select teh tick mark for required system.
    And then click on Continue button
    You have do this step before you drop the cube to right side of the cube.
    Ok, even after all these steps , if you reopen the screen you would not see Tick mark u have done just before. DONOT WORRY ABT it.
    Drag and drop required cube with dat flow before.
    Now you can see the Transfer rules with selected Source system only in the collected Objects.
