Can I restore a backup from my PC to the Mac in Parallels or other virtual simulator?

What I want to do:
I would like to backup my PC environment AS IS and restore it in Parallels or another virtual environment. Is that feasible? What would I use to do that? I use StorageCraft's ShadowProtect to back up my system each night. StorageCraft apparently has no experience in doing this either. If it is not feasible, what is my best solution
Background:
I have a PC that has over 30 programs that I use in a PC environment. To install my environment takes over 35 steps and 2 days of installation. Granted, some of those programs can be substituted with Mac equivaltents, but some cannot and I would like to buy some of the more expensive programs a little at a time. Restoring my environment takes very little time.

Both Parallels and VMWare Fusion offer "migration" programs that will attempt to transfer the Windows PC into a new Virtual Machine on the Mac if the Windows PC is on the network.  That machine generally will boot just fine.
HOWEVER the problem that will arise comes from Microsoft's licensing.  If you have an OEM version of Windows on the old PC (which 99% of users will, since they buy a Dell, Lenovo, etc. with Windows pre-installed) the OEM version is licensed only to run on that *ONE* CPU.  Thus when you try and boot that machine it will boot, but Windows will not be able to authenticate the license.  Microsoft's servers will discover you have "moved" the system to a new CPU.
At that point you *might* be able to figure out how to buy a license from Microsoft that the Windows machine can recognize.  I did get Microsoft support to help with that once, but it was a bit of a convoluted process.  The problem isn't buying the license--that's easy.  The problem is getting the version of Windows you have to accept the license number and register itself.
As well, sometimes Microsoft has been known to offer a "become legal" option when faced with an unauthorized copy and may offer to sell you authorization.  If you get that dialog things are a lot simpler :-) .
If you actually orignally installed a "retail box" version (not an OEM) of Windows on the original machine then you won't have any of these problems, as that license *can* be transferred to new equipment.  The program will still want to reauthenticate but Microsoft will give your copy the "OK" once it confirms the license and finds it's a full retail license.  Note that OEM versions are available for stand-alone sale, theoretically for those building their own system, so just the fact you bought it from NewEgg doesn't mean it was "retail"--retail versions come in retail packaging (fancy box), while OEM version tend to come simply in mailing sleeves.
Office is also sold both ways, though more users have the retail version.  But if you bought Office with your Windows PC then you may find that license also cannot be transferred and you'll have to buy a new version of Office for the Windows virtual machine.  Various other Windows software may have licensing quirks you'll run into with a transfer.
With full retail licensed copies of the Microsoft software, the process is dirt simple.  But, as I said, Microsoft doesn't sell most of the copies of Windows that way, rather selling "one machine" linked versions of the operating system that can't be moved to new machines.
The advantage of the transfer is clear--if you do it, you skip the whole mess of having to reinstall all of the software and rebuild the Windows machine from scratch. Unfortunately Microsoft offers nothing like the Migration Assistant.  The disadvantage is the same as using the Migration Assistant--you end up "inheritiing" various issues, along with the setup, from the old machine and transfer that onto the new one.
Note, as well, that you really are in no worse shape (and potentailly better shape) than if you had bought a new Windows PC.

  • HT1414 Can you restore a backup from an old ipod to a replacement one?

Hi Got an Ipod which is broken and will be replaced - can I restore a backup from the old ipod to the replacement one to recover all my music, apps, contacts, messages etc?
    Thanks Chris

You can restore from your iTunes backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
However, synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

  • Can you restore a backup from an iPhone 6 to an iPad 2?

I bought my wife an iPad 2 and I want to set it up to be just like her iPhone 6 (absent the iPhone only apps, obviously). However, I cannot seem to get it done.
I do not use iCloud backup - this is from a backup on a Mac running Yosemite via iTunes.  Both devices are running iOS 8.1.3.
I select 'Restore Backup', then select the backup of my wife's iPhone and I get a message: "Settings and data from some apps are not compatible with iPad and will not be restored." I figure this means it will restore everything except the iPhone specific apps.
I click 'continue' and it appears to go through the restore process, but then nothing gets installed on the iPad.
    Thoughts?

I restored a backup from a DIFFERENT iPad (mini) to my target iPad 2.  I have not been able to restore the backup from the iPhone to the target iPad.
    I have tried the following:
Backup of iPhone 6 to target iPad 2 - Fail
Backup of iPhone 5S to target iPad 2 - Fail
Backup of different iPad mini to target iPad 2 - Complete
So the target iPad 2 will take a restore from a different iPad (mini), but not from two different iPhones.
Is it just me, or can such a restore just not be done?

    Hello
Before i update my mac i backup all my files to the external hard drive after i update it to OSX (10.9)i can not restore them, due to new update i had to change my hard drive thats how i lost all my files
please guid me how can i restore my files
    regards

Not familiar with the Mac file structure either but you can transfer the entire content of your Firefox profile replacing entire content of a firefox profile you created on new HD. For me copying over a few files was out of the question all of the files are updated and I wasn't about to reinstall 150+ extensions and set up configurations for everything and to do that for that 20 profiles and .ini file. Except for 3 most didn't have a lot of extensions but it would be rather impossible.
I copied everything from the Mozilla folder down in the user libraries so all my profiles were set, it did something similar for application libraries.

  • Can't restore tm backup from external disk

    Hi
    I need some help please.
I have a 2T seagate sata drive, which I had installed as an internal drive in my mac pro. this is my time machine backup drive for the other internal discs, which are installed as software raid 0
So the 2T Seagate backs up the raid. worked nicely.
Now I bought an enclosure and installed that very same 2T Seagate as an external FW drive to make room inside the macpro for one more disc.
Now I am having the problem, that I can't restore the files from my tm back drive back to my internal drives.
When i use time machine itself to restore, it only creates the top folder but never restores any files.
I tried drag and drop of folders using finder, and it gives me the error "don't have permission".
I can't restore my own backup! I can see the folders and files on the backup drive, so everything seems to be there.
    any help highly appreciated
    thanks

The only way I was able to save my backup was to use a terminal and copy the entire last backup to a different local disc.
    cp -R /volumes/backup ./
    this copies the entire structure
at least i got my files back.

  • Can you restore songs purchased from iTunes on a (broken)Mac onto a new PC?

The logic board on my iMac G5 failed (again), and I couldn't afford to get a new Mac, so now I have an HP laptop. Also, my kids locked up my iPod Touch for 4 million minutes or so. Is there anyway to pull at least the purchased songs from my iTunes account onto my new computer? It seems like if I bought the content, that I should be able to download it again right?
My old Mac is basically a paperweight, and I figure if I try and unlock my iPod Touch on a PC that it will clear out everything. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andy

If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do) then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on this link you'll be able to email your query: iTMS Customer Service
If you have an iPod that still has the purchases on it the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

  • Will Backup from Time Machine Repair the Mac HD?

I discovered today (while trying to move my HD partition) that my Mac HD "disk needs to be repaired using Recovery HD."  I'm admittedly not very computer savvy, just enough to get myself in trouble.  So I'm wondering, if I attempt to reformat and restore from my Time Machine backup, will I simply introduce the same problems?  I've never reformatted before, so I'm beyond nervous.  I'd like to install Mountain Lion, but I'm assuming I need to repair this problem before doing so.  Am I wrong?  Is this something that's just beyond my capabilities and should be left to those at the Genius Bar?  Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
    Daniell

The directory errors it is reporting are usually minor and repairing from Disk Utility is almost always a safe operation. I would proceed with these steps:
    1. Boot into recovery mode and repair the disk
    2. Boot back into OS X and update your backups
    3. Install Mountain Lion
    4. Use the Mountain Lion recovery mode to wipe your disk
    5. Reinstall ML and use the migration assistant to restore from your backup
That should eliminate both errors in your backup and any problems that might be caused by upgrading a potentially corrupted OS X installation.
