Can I restore data from a dead Seagate external hard drive?

I have stored all my traveling pictures on my 2TB Seagate external hard drive. But when I plug the external drive to my PC this morning, it works quite slowly. When I click the external hard drive, it has no response. It seems like that
the Seagate external hard drive is dead. How is it possible to restore all files from a dead Seagate external hard drive when it has no response?

Something might be wrong with your Seagate external hard drive. You can try to plug out the external hard drive and reconnect it to your PC again to see if it can work normally. Once you are able to access the Seagate external drive, you
had better transfer all important data to another device to avoid data loss. If you are unable to access the Seagate, probably there are bad sectors on it. If so, you might have a try with data recovery software like iCare Data Recovery to extract files off
the external drive. This software is free and reliable.

  • How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility

How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility?
Last night i was using my external hard drive, for some reason the folder just closed and i couldn't find it on my desktop.
After googling solutions, i found it in the disk utilities, i clicked on the 'repair' button many times, but it said the 'error...' message.
So i ejected it to try again, now when i connect the USB external hard drive it doesn't show up on my desktop or disk utilities.
I really just want to either repair or recover the data on it because it literally has everything (documents, work files, photos etc) on it,
I downloaded an application to recover my files but it needs the USB to at least show up.recognise it which mine doesn't.
I know i should've backed it up on another USB, this definitely teaches me for next time to back up all my files.
Are the files lost forever or can i recover them by going to a shop or using a software?

    Thank you for responding.
This might sound stupid since i'm not really knowledgeable with Macs,
but since all my files were moved from my mac computer to the external hard drive,
is it possible to recover those files through my Mac - like recovering deleted files?

  • Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

What are these files you are trying to copy over?
If they are program specific and there is no program on a Mac to read them then you'll have to find either a Mac version of that program or one that does the same thing and can read those files.
The file extension should not change just because you connect a NTFS formatted drive to a Mac computer. A Word Document is still a .doc/.docx ad the same for all other office type programs. Music files with an extension of .MP3, or whatever, should read the same on both system. Same goes for all other files like images with a .JPG extension.
    Yes I would network them.
I would not use Migration Assistant. There is nothing on your Windows PC that can be used on the Mac other than your personal data files. No programs or settings can be carried over from Windows to OS X.

Also, when I view the files from the external hard drive, they show up as .nbz and are not recognized by any program on the Mac. Should I just abandon the hard drive option and start sharing files through the LAN approach?

  • Help with restoring files from back-up to external hard-drive

My laptop died. Took it to Best Buy for evaluation. They had to send it out; but (for $150) were able to back up the laptop's data on an external hard drive.
I have tried to restore my files to the new laptop, but can't figure out how...except to copy them over. Need some help.
The external hard drive included Backup Now EZ. Thought it would be easy, but I am stumped. Tried the "restore" feature, but am missing the boat somewhere...because it didn't work.
    Thanks.

That program is made by NTI.

  • Can I move Itunes from a pc based external hard drive on to a Time Capsule linked to Macbook Air? Is Timecapsule a good backup option for a 'silver surfer'?

I have a Macbook Air, iPod and old pc with external hard drive. My iTunes is on the pc which I sync with my iPod. I am thinking of buying a Timecapsule for backing up Macbook. At the  sametime would it make sense/be easy to move iTunes library on to new Timecapsule and access it from Macbook?  Or would I have to store the iTunes library on Macbook internal drive? (pc is getting old and will eventually be binned).  Thanks in advance

if I ran an eithernet cable through my flat
you could do that - or you could employ a pair of *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.
either way, as William pointed out, it will boost syncing speed and improve reliability.
Or can I attached an external hard drive to the time capsule, set it us as a network drive and then set that drive in the iTunes preferences as where to where its media folder is?
yes. my test iTunes library lives on an external HD hanging off my TC and, using a hardwired connection, data transfer speeds are more than sufficient for what you intend to do.
in fact, i would recommend the external drive connected to the TC over using the TC itself. one reason is that you will not be able to backup what is on the TC's drive using time machine. also, if the TC croaks and needs to be replaced, it will be difficult to retrieve the data from it.
an external HD, otoh, could be connected to you Mac periodically and backed up to another external HD using free apps such as _*Carbon Copy Cloner*_.

  • I just had my hard drive replaced and restored everything from a Time Machine external hard drive backup and now my "note" widgets won't load. Any ideas ?

I just had my hard drive replaced. I restored it using a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive. When I open Dashboard none of my "note" widgets will load. The other widgets open, such as weather, weather radar, calculater, dictionary, stock...  Even the iPhoto Mini widget works, just not the notes ( Sticky Notes and K-Notes ).  Any ideas on how to fix this ?

I did some research and found the solution to my problem. So I hope it's okay to answer my own question.
When you reinstall the OS, your Preferences go back to their default settings. Apparently Preferences is where this widget information is stored. This Preferences folder is located in the user Library folder which is hidden by default. You can access it using "one, or the other" of the following actions.
Action 1:      (1) In the Finder, choose Go > Go To Folder
                         (2) In the Go To Folder dialog, type ~/Library
                         (3) Click Go
                                                          -- OR --
Action 2:     Hold down the option (alt) key when using the Go menu. The Library folder is listed just                            below the Home folder.
After opening the Preferences folder, the file that you want to locate for k-notes is named
    widget-com.rakoth.lichlord.widget.k-notes.plist
After you locate it make note of the byte size of the file. Now, with the Preferences folder still open, open Time Machine and go back in time until you see a big jump in the file size. That will be your uncorrupted plist. Restore it and close Time Machine.
    Then Restart your computer.
After following this procedure I brought up Dashboard and my blank k-notes were now refilled with the previous text and color that occupied them before I had to restore the OS.
This procedure also worked for Sticky notes, which in the Preference folder are named
    widget-com.apple.widget.stickies.plist

  • How do i transfer data from a windows 7 external hard drive to my new macbook pro

I had just ordered this MacBook Pro (first timer w/ mac) and was looking forward to transfering the data from the Dell XPS Studio to the MBP... When my wife called me at work to tell me:  While speaking with her mom on Skype (on the dell) ... she was trying to show her a bowl full of "shrimp"... yes "shrimp"... when she poured several ounces of shrimp water (salty/fishy) into the keyboad and trackpad of the Dell.
It stopped working... 3 days later my (this) MBP arrived.. was able to start dell and use a mouse and keyboard... attempted data transfer with "Parrallels" software... and it failed ... Parrallels does not work with "OEM" sofware... Have to buy a seperately licensends Windows 7 software at $120 to make parrallels work.  Sent software back to Parrellels with nasty note...
Dell computer began to stop responding... as the salty water/corrosion was reeking havoc on the electronics.  Took Dell to repair store where they removed and installed in to a SIIG Hi-Speed USB to Sata 2.5" Enclosure... The last time I attempted to transfer data I was very frustrated... as there are more than 120 gig... it takes a long time... only to find out it didn't work...
    Please help !!
NOTE: I do have a 2T Time Capsule... that I'm "NOT" completley familure with as well... if this helps.

Take the drive out of the enclosure and use a SATA to USB adapter for $12-$30 you can get online.
The Mac can read NTFS drives, but not write files to that format unless you install more software which you will have to pay for and keep upgraded.
Once you have your files off the drive, transferring manually via drag and drop methods, reformat it which will erase it, that way you can use it likely back in the enclosure as a storage drive.
Avoid using gimmicky software to migrate for you, learn to do it by hand and then you'll always prefer this method for it's ease, control, reliability and directness in times of crises.
Yes if you want to run Windows on a Mac, you need a licensed disk version. Parallels would be sued out of existence if they used a OEM copy.

  • Even though iOS cannot restore backups of newer devices, can it restore data from an older device using 7.1.2 to a newer device using iOS8

iPhone 4s 16GB running iOS 7.1.2. Even though iOS cannot restore backups of newer devices, can it restore data from an older device using 7.1.2 to a newer device using iOS8

    Hi ,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you cannot use your Wi-Fi after the latest update to your iPhone 4s. I know you have already done some great troubleshooting by restoring with iTunes but the Wi-Fi becomes unavailable very quickly after you set it up. Go ahead and set up the iPhone so you can get into the Setting and then follow the steps provided in the attached article.
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
         Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Restart your iOS device.
Make sure that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Make sure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
If you complete all of these steps and still are not able to access the Wi-Fi, it may be necessary to follow the link at the bottom of the page and contact Apple Support.
    Have a great day,
    -Joe

  • Restore Files from Seagate external hard drive?

I have a macbook (late 2009 version) and recently my hard drive failed. Before failing, I brought my mac in and a genius helped me do a time machine backup onto a 1t Seagate external hard drive (the external was reformatted for os beforehand). Now, I can't figure out how to restore my old information from the external onto my new, restored hard drive.

See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.
    There is more info here.

  • I'm currently backing up using Time Machine and a Seagate external hard drive, how to do I restore on a new computer?

I hate to say it.. But I have never backed up!! I have thousands of pics of my son on this mac book, it got wet and NOW I'm backing up (as i type) to a Seagate external hard drive-  I plugged it in, and then Time MAchine launched automatically.  It looks like it's backing up my whole computer, is it backing up everything?  photos, address book, documents etc?  If my computer crashes tomorrow, how would I restore all of this information on a new computer?
Help, I'm computer iliterate- hence the reason I got a Mac (so easy to use).  I need reasurance that it will back up!  How do I continue to back up?  Leave the external hard drive plugged in?  I'm telling you I'm below the knowledge of "Backing Up a Mac for Dummies"

Time Machine makes a backup of the whole OS.X volume automatically, so you will have an exact copy of your hard disk in your Time Machine external disk. Also, Time Machine will make backups every hour, always that your Time Machine disk is connected. If you want more information, visit this site > http://pondini.org
To restore this in a new Mac, you have to use Migration Assistant. Just connect the Time Machine drive into the new computer, open Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps. You will be able to select what you want to transfer.
Also, if you have a brand-new Mac, you can do this during the initial setup. Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the Time Machine disk and follow the steps
