Can I restore deleted text messages?

It appears I have deleted a lot of text messages I had been saving. Is there a way to restore them?

Only if you have a backup application already installed.

  • HT4859 how do I restore deleted text messages from an iCloud backup?

I mistakenly deleted an important text conversation - swiping and deleting the wrong conversation.   My iphone is backed up to icloud, but not on my conputer.  Are there steps I can take to restore the deleted text messages from the icloud backup?  If so what are they and where will I find the restored messages after the process?   Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi again - thank you very much for the feedback.  It is actually a conversation over 3 days that is quite important so if I can recover it, I would like to.
As for the actual process, the most recent back up was prior to my deletion.   Three last questions (I hope...):
    1) How will I know what I need to redownload from itunes?
    2) Is this link the best in terms of the literal steps to take to do the restore:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    3) Is there anything I should do to the phone before I begin the restore process?
Again, thank you for your time - very much appreciate the expert advice.

  • How do I restore deleted text message photo attachments?

I deleted a group of text messages with attached photos by mistake from my iPhone 5. After doing a restore from my most recent backup, the text messages are restored, but many of the photos only show a file name. The files are primarily jpegs along with a few .png and .mov. Should I try to do another backup and restore or is there another way to get back the missing photos?

As we know, every time you sync iDevice with iTunes, it will automatically make a backup of your iDevice contents including photos, SMS, reminders, contacts and more. Therefore, as long as you have ever synced your iPhone with iTunes, you can recover deleted text messages from iPhone. Do not connect your iPhone to iTunes again until the messages are recovered with iPhone Data Recovery. Otherwise, the old backup file will be overwritten by the current content on your iPhone. Once it happens, the deleted messages will be gone forever.

Is there a way to recover deleted text messages

(I know this is a somewhat old thread, but someone may stumble on it if they're in a similar situation!)
It really all depends, unfortunately. When the messages are deleted, the database storing them marks it as "deleted" but doesn't actually destroy the information fully. Eventually the database will recompact the space, rearrange, and reuse, but until then the message could be found.
With that said, from my own experience, sometimes the much older messages are the ones that happen to stick around, and the newer ones get overwritten first. It all just depends on how the space in the file gets compacted and reused I'd say it's worth a try to look.
I am the main developer for Decipher TextMessage, which has a feature to recover deleted text messages from the iPhone backup files. The nice thing is that the software will scan for your iTunes backups of your phones (perhaps finding the message in an older backup before it was deleted!), show you all of the regular not-deleted messages, and then you can press the recover button to look for deleted information. I usually recommend running the program once to see what older information you have (always better to get the original not-deleted version when possible) and then make a new backup and run Decipher TextMessage again.
I hope this helps someone out! If you want to send us some more questions directly, you can do so from our website http://deciphertools.com
(Disclaimer: Clearly since I work for Decipher Media, the links I have made above to deciphertools.com may benefit me in the future.)

Generally, you can't but... try sending a text to the person and see if some of their conversation(s) returns.  I've seen this happen a few times.

  • How can I retrieve deleted text messages from my iphone 5

Somebody deleted a string of text messages from my iPhone 5 and I want to know if they can be retrieved and if so how? I'm new to the iPhone as this is my first apple product.  I am still not even sure on how to use my iTunes and so forth.  Please help as the string of messages was very important!! Thank you so very much!! Tracy

SMS text messages are backed up with the iPhone - whether it's locally or to iCloud. If you've already written over the backup that had them (as in, backed up after the delete) then they're gone.
If you still have a backup available from a time where you had the messages on your iPhone, all you have to do is erase the iPhone and restore from that backup.
"Retrieve deleted messages from iPhone" is simple as pie.

  • Can I retrieve deleted text messages?

I erased some important messages so I tried to back up my phone and I backed up to a period of time way before the messages,,,so are my deleted messages gone forever and can I even get back to where i was before?

If your last backup was taken BEFORE you sent/received the text messages, they obviously won't be recoverable.

  • Is there any way to restore deleted text messages on iPhone 5?

I accidentally deleted a string of text messages on my iphone 5 yesterday and was wondering if there is anyway to get them back.  I have the icloud back up on but have not used the backup through itunes.  Please let me know if any of you know if there is a way to get them back!
    Thank you!

if you are certain that you have those text message in the icloud backup, then do this.
Go to settings - general - reset - erase all contents and settings - this will wipe your phone clean, then when it boots back up, you'll have the option to restore from your icloud backup.  Your phone will restore to that backup, anything current you have will be erased.

  • How can I recover deleted text messages from my iPhone 5 using my iphone 5

I deleted some of my text messages and now I need them back.

Did you back up the phone before deleting the messages?  If so, restore the backup.  If not, they're gone.
Don't trust web sites that claim to have software that recovers without a backup - they are scams and identity theft sites.

  • How do I restore deleted text messages from iPhone 5?

    I can't update to ios 7.1 I keep getting a error

Your post has nothing to do with your title!
You can restore deleted messages only if the phone was backed up before deleting them.
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    I can't update to ios 7.1 I keep getting a error
Can't help unless you tell us the exact error message, including any numbers

  • HT1766 How to restore delete text messages

I accidentally erased a long stream of texts from/to my daughter. How can I restore them?

You can only get them back if they were part of your last iPhone backup.   You would need to restore the device, and would lose any changes made to your device since then.
