Can I restore files from a Snow Leopard

Can I restore files from a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup onto Lion?

Not really a reply, but I have the same question.  I purchased a new iMac and installed Lion.  I used the Migration Assistant to copy everything to the new machine, but I would like to have a backup copy in case something gets lost.
Why don't you just do a new backup?
Can I restore individual files from the Time Machine backup on Computer A running Snow Leopard to Computer B running Lion?
Yes, via #16 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  But the permissions from Computer A will be restored, too, so the user account you restore them to on computer B may or may not have permission to see or change them.

File Sharing over Bluetooth is not a feature of iOS devices. iOS does not include the required Bluetooth profiles to allow this. You cannot add this feature, so you may as well stop trying.

  • Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups

Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups can't even roll back to previous setup

    This is typical Mavericks.
Was the old backup taken from Mavericks install?
Did you already start TM from the new install and thus totally foul up and corrupt your old backup?
You will need to try migrate assistant.. and if that fails you will need to manually pull your files from the old backup if you can still access them.

  • How can I restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. Using Migrat

I would like to restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. When I tried using Migration Assistant it only gives me my internal hard drive as an option to restore to. The internal hard drive on my macbook isnt large enough to store the files.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

  • Can't restore files from Time machine backup?

I kinda successfully restored my files from Time Machine after a clean re-install of Snow Leopard (Time Machine thought they were new files, though, so backed up the 26 GB... waste of space), but now I'm trying to restore the files of the other user on the computer. In her pictures folder, I can't copy the iPhoto Library because I don't have permission to access it! The same problem occurred on my account too, but I was able to go to my Time Machine drive and manually change the permissions for the files I wanted, which doesn't work on her account.
I have made a Youtube video of the error:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1__PdyAetVg
Can anyone assist me in restoring the files? That's all I need help in. Thanks

But if I transfer everything with the Setup Assistant, won't I once again be experiencing the problems I had?
If the problems were caused by your data. But that's extremely unlikely. It may have been an app, or, much more likely from your description, something corrupted in the Leopard OS. That's one of the problems with upgrading a sick system without knowing what or where the causes are. It's a bit like a brain surgeon operating on himself: if he isn't in tip-top shape to start with, his condition is likely to change, and not for the better.
Most of us would have recommended first simply doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your internal HD; if that didn't help, installing the "combo" Leopard update; if that didn't work, doing an +Archive and Install+ and re-installing the "combo."
After a clean re-install of Snow Leopard, my Mac worked fine again (except for the TM trouble). So it probably had something to do with my old files.
Probably not. Much more likely OSX was somehow damaged. And you got a whole new one.
How come I could read the files on my external HD and yet not be able to copy the files?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, among other things, in an attempt to keep us mere mortals from moving, changing, or deleting things and corrupting them.

  • Can I restore TM backup of Snow Leopard running on Ext disk to new HDD

My internal HDD will be replaced due to failure. Whilst have a TM backup prior to the failure, I have installed a temporary Snow Leopard system on my External drive which also has TM backups. As this is the latest updated system can I use the TM backup of my external drive to restore the system to the new HDD?
I have looked at the detailed TM 'tips' and FAQs but have to confess I am confused as to th right answer.

You could do that, but it may be better to install a fresh OS on the new drive and then use Migration Assistant to restore your data.

  • Restoring iLife from the Snow Leopard DVD

    Hi,
I deleted iMovie from my MB Pro a while back, and would like to restore it. I was wondering which .pkg file contains iMovie. I'm guessing iLife is bundled in one package, but I couldn't find it by the package names.
    TIA,
    z

You can only do this from the install disks which came with your computer: if your computer was originally Leopard and you subsequently bought the Snow Leopard disk this does not contain iLife.
Insert the install disk which came with your computer and you should see an option to install bundled software only.

  • GUID Partition Scheme - Need clean install: can I restore files from TM?

So, here's my problem. I have an Intel PowerMac (first series after the G5) and when I try to install SL I get the following error message: "Can't Install Snow Leopard Since Disk Does Not Use GUID Partition Scheme". I guess it's something related to the fact thet I previously upgraded from an old iMac with a PPC processor (Apple partition vs. GUID partition).
Anyway, accoding to my understanding, the only solution for me is to do a clean install by wiping the HD and re-partitioning it.
Now, my question is: can I use my current TM backup to later restore apps/prefs onto the new SL system? I believe that TM now has an Apple partition scheme that reflects the one I have on Leopard 10.5. Is that right? Will I encounter any problem because of the different partition type of TM?

"Anyway, accoding to my understanding, the only solution for me is to do a clean install by wiping the HD and re-partitioning it."
Right, except that your drive will automatically be erased when you set up the GUID partitiion.

Your TM backup should work. But, there are not many guarantees in life. You could tranfer you TM backup temporarily to your internal and then make a bootable clone of your internal on your external. Afterwards, you could transfer the TM backup back. Then, you'd have two sources from which you could restore items.

  • How can I restore files from /User/ohthatchris/Library ?

I've been having a bit of a saga with Time Machine, and I think I'm almost there but I need a tip or two.
I run TM on a Time Capsule, and have for some time.
I wanted to do some renovation when I updated my air to Mountain Lion, as follows:
    Final BU with TM.
Copy of known important files to BU disk (Documents, Applications, etc)
Wipe HD and clean install of Mountain Lion.
Renamed computer (had the messy defaunt name Christophers-MacBook_Air...) and created (the only) user account with different name. These changes were for greater compatibility with my employer's network.
I then restored my important files and applications, and I was pleased that I've free'd up lots of space and I'm running well.
Restarted TM, and noticed that the sparsebundle was renamed with the new computer name, and the other name was not visible.
After a little while I noticed that I needed a few files from my old system, specifically my Chrome bookmarks and some recent notes from Notational Velocity. I knew these were in the old TM files, so I proceeded as follows:
created an account with the same name as my old, pre-Mountain Lion account.
In System Preferences > sharing I renamed the computer as before (Christophers-MacBook...).
Entered TM and there were my old backups! This looked great and I felt like I was home free, but no...
The files I need are in the /User/othatchris/Library/Application Support/.. directories. I can see the new ones in the terminal, but my backups in the TM finder-like window don't include the Library directory. Can I force it to be displayed? Is there some way to interact with the TM backups through the terminal?
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Chris

  • HT4859 how can i restore files from backup after i reset my ipod touch?

I rebooted my ipod touch how can i restore my back up files

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Rebooting your device is not the same as restoring it, to restore a device go to settings > general > reset > erase all contents and settings. Once you do this you will then be given the option to restore it from a backup or as a new iPod.

  • How can I restore files from empty trash?

Please someone help me! I deleted my IPHOTO LIBRARY by mistake, and then I pressed " empty trash". Is it even possible for me to recover deleted itens from the trash? I live in Brazil and the closest Apple Store is 5 hours from home. I am not that comfortable with any support companies trying to fix my computer and I can't set up Time Machine alone.
    Any tips?

I have heard of it, I know nothig about it, Data Rescue is the one I see recommended the most. I had to use Data Rescue once many years ago on a family members machine and recovered quite a bit, but it was a purchased version.
Try the Wondershare and see if it finds anything (what have you got to lose? as of now you have already lost data) I would try the trial version and see if it recovers anything before thinking about buying the full package. If it does not recover anything then I would not buy it. Maybe then you might try the Data Rescue 3 trial and seee if that recovers anything.
As for Time Machine back up, you REALLY want to have that on an external drive. You can partition your internal drive for a Time Machine back up, but what happens if the internal drive crashes,? Then you have nothing. With an external Time Machine drive you can replace the broken drive and then restore the data.
I have 2 back ups 1 Time Machine, and 1 Carbon Copy Clone (the CCC can be booted from, so if my internal drive goes down, I can still start up from the clone. Drives are fairly inexpensive these days, data can be pricless.
It is not a question of if my drive will crash, it is a question of when, all drives will fail at some point.
By the way, your english is quite good.
I hope this helps and you get your photos back, I would be very sad if I lost all of mine.
    Best of luck

  • My hard drive failed...Can you restore files from i-pod

My hard drive failed. Most stuff was backed up, but not one large folder of MP3 files. All of the songs in question are on my i-pod, but I cannot for the life of me find a way to get the i-pod to transfer the files on to the new hard drive.
Does anyone know of a way to do this?
The music was purchased from a site other than the i-store BTW, and re-downloading it all in very manual if I get stuck having to do that. It seems like it should be possible to just send it all back over from the i-pod. I'm baffled.
    Thanks!

  • 24 imac snow leopard backup on 27 iMac Lion? Can I restore system from backup?

Hi guys, I have a 24 inch iMac which came with preinstalled Snow Leopard. I am about to buy a new 27 iMac which I beleve comes with preinstalled Lion. I have been using time machine to fully back up my 24 inch iMac. What I want to know, is that when I buy my new 27 inch iMac, will I be able to restore it's system from my Snow leopard 24 inch imac backup? Please get back to me, thank you for your time

Start with Kappy's post here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3525616
As it says in the next-to-last paragraph, you can restore some things, but not others.
"Simple" apps, that were just dropped into the Applications folder, can be restored that way, but be careful not to replace any Snow Leopard versions with Lion versions -- they likely won't work.
"Complex" apps must be reinstalled from their original discs.  See Transferring  Applications for an explanation.
Some Snow Leopard apps won't work with the Lion file/folder structure.  Mail is one for sure, and there may be others.
All told, you may be better off fixing whatever's wrong, if possible, and/or getting used to or finding workarounds for changes you don't like.
