Can I restore just a single folder from a backup?

An important folder seems to have disappeared today; I don't know how. I would like to be able to restore only that folder if possible from today's bookmarkbackups folder. I have looked over some other postings about the bookmarks restore process, but they answers don't seem to match my problem. I am using the latest FF browser, 27.0.1.
I backed up all the bookmarks about a week ago in both html and Json formats. I should also note that this folder was the first folder in the bookmarks menu after the individual bookmarks, if that helps diagnose the problem.
Thanks to anyone who can help. The missing folder is a large and valuable one.

Regarding zero-byte backups, some other users have encountered this problem as well. It seems that the JSON backup feature is encountering "something" in the places.sqlite database which is causing it to cancel, but I don't know whether the exact problem has been identified yet.

  • How can I restore 3rd party app data from my backup in the cloud

First a brief history. I use the iCloud to backup my iPad 2 and hardly ever synch it to itunes on my computer. I got the new iPad and restored the backup of my iPad 2 onto it.  All was fine except that an issue I had on my iPad 2's Safari had transferred over to my new iPad. That's is for another discussion. Anyhow I went to the genius bar and they said to just setup my new iPad as a new device and then manually install everything back on it. Stuff like mail, contacts, etc, would be reloaded from the cloud. So I did and I noticed that one of my 3rd party apps, MadPad, had none of my saved data. Does anyone know of a way to restore 3rd party app data from the iCloud? Is there some sort of utility out there that would do this?  I don't want to restore it from my previous iPad 2 backup because it will reintroduce the Safari problem back onto my new iPad.
    Thanks!

Assuming that you even have a backup with the data in it, you have no choice but to use a backup in order to restore that data. That is the idea behind backing up to iCloud. If that is the only backup that you have - then that is the one that you have to use.
But if the backup is bad - or had corrupt data - then you will end up with the corrupt data again. You cannot selectively restore app data from a backup. you restore all settings and data - or nothing at all.

  • Can I restore OSX to a disk,  from a backup that's on the same disk?

I have a Powermac G5 Quad, that has two internal drives. (a 250gb system drive, and a 500gb spare).
Both drives are now out of space. I want to purchase a 1TB drive to replace the 250 system drive.
Tell me if this plan makes any sense:
    1. Remove the 500gb spare drive.
    2. Install the 1 TB drive, format, & use it as the Time Machine backup disk for the system drive.
    3. Once the backup is complete, Remove the 250gb system drive.
    4. Boot to the 10.5 Install DVD, and select "restore from backup"
    5. Use the Backup on the 1 TB Drive, to install the OS on the same disk.
It's step # 5 that I'm not sure will work. Can I install an OS to a disk, from a backup that's on the same disk?

Sorry it took me so long. I had a baby. Anyway, here's how it went down:
I attempted to use the disk utility to "Clone" the original 250gb system disk to the new 1tb Hard drive.
It did not work. Tried booting to the Leopard install disk, and doing it from there, no dice.
So, I went ahead and created 2 partitions on the new 1TB disk. One I called "Time Machine" and it was 300 gigs. The other I called "New System Disk".
I booted to the "Old" System disk, and set up Time Machine to back-up to the "Time Machine" partition. It took 5 hours to back up 250 gigs, but it worked.
I then booted to the 10.5 Install DVD. one of the utilities you can use is "Install from Time Machine Backup" This worked. Took about 5 hours to copy everything to the new "New System Disk".
When that was done, I removed the old system disk. It booted to the new system disk without any trouble.
I was now stuck with a "Time Machine" partition that I did not want. It was EXTRAORDINARILY EASY to delete that partition, then re-size the other one so it took up the entire 1 Terabyte of available space.
So, the answer to the question is: Yes, you can use Time Machine to restore to the same disk, provided that the disk is using two partitions.

  • On iPhone4, can i restore only contacts and messages from my backup after restoring to factory defaults

    Hi,
I have a iPhone4 and backed it up before reset to factory defaults. Now, I want to restore only contacts and messages stored in my backup.
Can someone let me know whether this is possible?
If yes, please help me with steps to restore only contacts and messages.
    Thanks!

The restore from backup process is all or nothing, there is no selective restore process.

  • Can I restore just iCal from a previous Time Machine version ? I have lost all my calendar data trying to move to icloud

    Hi There
I hope someone can help me. I have lots of calendars on my mac that I used to use for work and home. A friend suggested moving them to icloud to then sync them with my iphone as he does. It looked like a great option so we tried it. However when I set up icloud on ical - it perpetually came up with 'moving calendars to server account' and I couldn't do anything. It's been ten days - so we've just unchecked the icloud box for ical - and everything is now gone !
    My question is twofold
    1) Can I restore just iCal itself from Time Machine ?
    2) What can I do to prevent this happening and successfully move over to icloud with my calendars ?
    Thanks !!

Because of the horrible battery life with Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
I am unaware of any battery life problem with Mountain Lion. There are many problems with incompatible 3rd party software, but that is a different problem.
I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.
Will the ML Time Machine be backwards compatiable with Lion?
No. 3rd party application may be fine. Most Apple applications and data will not work.

  • I can't restore 'library' with support files from Time Machine

backup - I can't restore 'library' with support files from Time Machine - Ask Different
Due to an accident, my entire applications folder with all the support files, including plists and caches got deleted.
I tried restoring by files from the most recent Time Machine backups but I cannot retrieve my applications with the support files.
I even tried it with migration assistant on a new image.
    Is this impossible?
    Must I start from scratch?
    Details of the ‘accident’
I was using this app called ‘AppCleaner’ that also automatically deletes related support files which are normally left behind if one simply trashes an Application.
In the search view, I typed the app name and I selected all the apps in the results using Command + A. Unfortunately, this selected every single Application in the Applications Folder in the background and I trashed and deleted all files.
    Anyway.
I tried to restore the applications and library from my Time Machine Back-ups but failed to do so because I didn’t have enough space to restore. (I have a 11inch Macbook Air 2012 64GB SSD
When I tried to restart in recovery mode, I had the same problem, I was disallowed the option to restore using my time capsule backups because my SSD didn’t have enough space for the backup.
I then tried to restore it to a totally different but new image on a 64GB USB3.0 Sandisk USB Stick, but the process stopped after hours of being stuck around 30.4 percent and the computer was unable to boot, leaving me with a persistent verbose message suggesting it couldn’t identify the os, kernel or anything.
I finally tried restoring the state using migration assistant on the very same SSD that had my files missing. This happened successfully and I have all my applications in the applications folder.
But now I have 13GB free (I had 2GB before) and all my application support files, saved states, preferences, caches and customizations are gone.
Basically, it feels like I just got a new macbook with my documents and itunes folder loaded on to it.
How can I get my apps back to the pre-deletion state or is this impossible? Do I have to start from scratch? I thought my Time Machine Backups would restore it to exactly the same state, am I wrong?

Can you simply navigate to your Time Machine backup with the Finder? Treat it like an external hardrive and just look for your old Applications folder. /Applications/
Also, quite a few apps put config and support files in ~/Library/Application\ Support/
So you may be able to get the files from there as well.

  • Can I delete a whole disk folder from my Time Machine backup drive?

I temporarily mounted a drive (let's call it "Mumble"), forgetting to exclude it from Time Machine's list of disks to ignore. I caught this oversight after Time Machine had done just one hourly backup, and Time Machine is no longer backing it up, i.e., there's no "Mumble" folder in Time Machine's recent time-stamped folders on the backup HD.
I'd like to recover space on the backup HD by deleting the unwanted backup of "Mumble" files.
Can I simply delete the "Mumble" folder from yesterday's Time Machine "2009-01-31-155458" folder on the backup HD?

don't delete anything o the TM drive using finder. you can do this from TM interface. start TM. select your "Mumble" drive in the sidebar. click on the "gears' action button in finder's toolbar and choose 'delete all backups of..".

  • Any way to restore just a single page group?

    Hi All,
Anyone know if it's possible to restore just a single page group on a site with many page groups?
    thanks,
    Bret

But if there are several text boxes on a page, you will have to open
each one individually.  You can spell check a selection and you can
spell check the entire document. It would be helpful if you could
spell check all items on a single page.

  • Can I restore my address book info from a backed user file app support?

My hard drive crashed, no data recovered. I had my user file backed up to an ExHD. New HD installed, put Leopard on it. Is there a way I can restore my contacts to my Address Book through my backed up user file on my ExHD? I can not locate an actual archive file of the address book.

If you were using the same version of Mac OS X on both drives (10.5 to 10.5, 10.4 to 10.4, etc), then you only need to move a copy of the Home/Library/Mail folder from the backup and replace the existing Home/Library/Mail folder on the new HD with it.
Be sure that Mail is not running when you do this.
