Can I restore just One Application through time machine? (vs. Migration)

Hi. I've reformatted my Mac
Instead of Migration Assistant
I want to restore just ONE application (Microsoft Office)
1. I've plugged in my Time Machine
2. Time Machine is Not Configured
3. I Browse Other Time Machine Disks
4. I Use Selected Disk
5. I go to my latest Restore pane
6. I click around until I find the Application Folder
7. I click on Microsoft Office, and I press Restore
Am I doing it correctly? Or am I simply just Drag and Dropping into my Application Folder on my newly reformatted Mac?
Thanks in advance.

That's probably not going to work. When you installed Office, it almost certainly installed other files in other places, and perhaps some "helper" apps, in addition to the main app. Unless you know what and where all those things are, and restore them, too, it's not likely to work well, if at all.
See [Transferring Applications|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/TransferApps.html] for details.
Your best bet is to reinstall it from the original disc.

  • How can I restore just one application from Time Machine?

Before you restore an application from a Time Machine backup it would be wiser to remove the current installed copy then reinstall from the application's original distribution medium - download, CD/DVD, etc. The reason for this is that Time Machine backs up every hour. By now the bad version of this application is now backed up to your Time Machine backup drive. Restoring from the backup won't resolve your problem.
First, uninstall the old program. If the program came with an uninstaller then use it. If not then start by deleting the application from the Applications folder. Then locate all the support files associated with the application and remove them, too. Look for these in:
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Applications Support
Applications may come with a separate uninstaller program that could also be in your Applications folder. Some applications may install other files in other locations on your computer. If you tell us what the application is we may be able to provide additional help.

  • I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and i can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help

I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and I can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.

And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • How can I restore Parental Control Settings from Time Machine Backup?

I was trying to adjust one of the parental controlled accounts for my child.  I disabled parental controls, rebooted, and re-enabled it.  Now all the settings that I had setup before are gone.  How can I restore Parental Control Settings from Time Machine Backup?

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html

I had a note "document" on my macbook air that dissappeared.  I have been regularly backing this mac

how to search Time Machine for notes.   Any suggestions?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes
Right-click or control-click the line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Restore the selected item from the most recent backup that predates the unwanted changes.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Can I restore my mac from a Time Machine backup once I have used BootCamp to partition and set up Windows (without erasing all of the Windows content)?

A few months ago I partitioned my mac using BootCamp and successfully installed Windows and a few Windows-only programs (games).  I never restored my mac from the Time Machine backup and now I would really like all of my files back on my mac.  I am wondering if I insert the osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup, will that get rid of the partition I made for Windows?  Will the Windows side of my hard drive stay in tact or will everything on that side get erased when I restore the mac side from the Time Machine backup.  It was a HUUUUUUUGE pain to do the BootCamp partition and get everything Windows set up and I would really like to not have to do that all over again.  I just want to make sure that if I insert the mac osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup it will only affect the Mac partition, NOT the Windows partition.

    Hi,
Time Machine does not touch your BootCamp Windows.
It simply said ignores it completely.
Nonetheless, I am curious as to why you wanna restore a Time Machine backup.
Usually during partitioning with the BootCamp Assistant in OSX to make the Windows partition your OSX stays intact.

  • Can i pull just one file off time capsule?

I have successfully used my airport time capsule to transfer all information from my old Mac to my new Mac but somehow in the new iTunes update, I lost a video located in home movies. Is there a way to go into time capsule to retrieve only one file? Fortunately I had another external hard drive back up and was able to get this one, but wondering if I should keep using another external hard drive as a second back up.

Files that are held in libraries cannot be recovered without recovering the whole library.. that is not the fault of Time Machine or the TC.. it is the way apple structure its files now.
See the info from pondini on restoring files.
    Q15 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I think in our present state of affairs with TM becoming less than reliable.. I would encourage everyone to use a bootable clone.. eg Carbon Copy Cloner which will hold the files in the identical manner to your hard disk.. if a file is lost from your hard disk boot from the clone and you can then extract it from the library.. but it works differently and so changes will be made to the backup as they happen on the computer.. therefore it is important to also keep libraries in separate backups.

  • Can't hear just one person through my iPhone 4

Okay, so lets see if this works. So I've had my iphone 4 for about a year and a half, I've never really had issues beside the normal glitching and having calls drop here and there. Recently I've had an issue with my iphone connecting with just one individual. Yes, I know it sounds weird but keep reading. I have been able to make calls and recieve phone calls fine, however I cannot with just one single individual. They to also only have the same problem with me, however the only difference is they can hear me but I cant hear them or anything. We're able to text and send picture messages without any issues.
Now sometimes when I try to call them, itll ring twice and then the line just goes dead, but thats usually them picking it up. I cannnot hear them at all. I've already done the reset on my phone and I've already contacted apple about this issue and their about as lost as I am because it doesnt make sense that this is only happening with one individual. I've also blew out the speakers and such like people have suggested. I use my head phones that came with my speaker, and ive connected and reconnected them incase my iphone thought they were plugged in.
Let me give you a little bit more info. They have an android phone, we have the same carrier which is verizon and they live in another state (not sure if thats helpful). I'm completely lost because this has been going on for about 4 days now and its driving me crazy. This happened a few weeks ago, however it magically fixed its self ( im thinking it was because I had bad service). If anyone has any solutions that might help, please, please let me know.

The whole issue is that I cannot hear this person, but I can hear everyone else.
That proves that the problem is either in the other party's phone or his carrier.  If you can hear everyone else, your phone is OK.

  • Can I restore events with titles from time machine?

I need to restore 2 events back into iphoto. I am using time machine as my backup. When I restore the event it imports the photos from that event back into iphoto but puts them into an "untitled event".
Is there a way to restore events including the title of the event or do I have to go by memory on what all the events were titled?
It would seem that there would be a way to do this. My concern is if I ever have to restore a large number of events from time machine it would be nearly impossible to remember what each event is titled.
    Thank you in advance

    Thomas:
No, you can't do it that way. There is another way but is rather involved and time consuming and will require the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. Here's how:
1 - restore the entire library with the events you want and keep the current one.
2 - rename the restored library to iPhoto Library Restored.
3 - rename the original library back to just iPhoto Library.
4 - open your current library and then close.
5 - open iPLM and get both libraries loaded in the left hand pane.
6 - copy the event from the restored library to the operation library like this.
That will keep your keywords, titles and comments and Event title intact.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

many thanks . by the i didn't  back up my i phone through iCloud , i lost every things, photo, contacts, notes, email, message ,etc

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
The user Library folder is normally hidden in the Finder, and in Time Machine. The easiest way to get to it on another volume is to make hidden items visible temporarily. Download and run the free application TinkerTool (not "TinkerTool System"), select the Finder tab, and check the box labeled Show hidden and system files. Then click Relaunch Finder. When you're done, uncheck the box and relaunch the Finder again.
If you prefer not to run that application, ask for other instructions.
"I did the instructions you suggested to me , but it couldn't help. the one who did back up to my computer told me the file of  I tunes would be hidden some where . therefore he and I dont know where is it hidden. i would suggest if you can get access to my screen and find the file in my External driver . i am not so familiar with this process.

  • Can you restore an external drive using Time Machine

I have my media libraries (iphoto, imovie, itunes) on a separate external drive connected to my mac. They are being backed up to another HD through my time machine backups. However, should my media external drive fail, is it even possible to restore the files to a replacement external HD using time machine? Would it be better to partition my time machine external drive and use half for time machine and the other half to manually copy/backup my external medial HD?

Would it be better to partition my time machine external drive and use half for time machine and the other half to manually copy/backup my external medial HD?
Bad idea, thats putting everything in once place. Worst premise for data protection
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
Everything is about 1. redundancy, 2. redundancy and 3. multiple storage platforms (DVD, multiple HD, online server archives ala a personal website etc.)
The first realization is that your data on your computer is highly vulnerable
The second realization is that you need a HD backup of your OS and data
The third realization is that you need at the very least a secondary HD backup
The fourth and final realization is understanding the fragility of any and all HD & ferromagnetic storage, and that vital data needs to be “frozen” on unassailable redundancies across multiple storage platforms including multiple HD, online backup, archival DVD burns comprising at the very minimum triple platform redundancy of data you have been working on for years or decades that cannot be replaced.
    The B.A.R. “rule” (backup-archive-redundancy)
Backup: Active data emergency restore. Backups are moved from backups to archives; or from backups to the computer for restore or data retrieval.
Archive: Active and static data protection with the highest level of redundancy. Archives are only moved from itself to itself (archived copies). Generally a “long-term retention” nexus.
Redundancy: A fail-safe off-site or protected and “frozen” copy of your vital data and foolproof protection against magnetic degradation and HD mechanical failure. A likewise failsafe from theft, house fire, etc.
Redundancy has two points of premise:
A: redundancy (copies) of data archives.
B: redundancy of data on different platforms (optical, online, magneto-optical, HD).
Send your backups to your archives (as often as possible), and your archives to self-same redundancies.
*When referring to backups and archives here, this is in reference to your data saved/ created/ working on,... not your OS, your applications, and your system information / settings,...which is the idealized premise for use of Time Machine as a system-backup after internal data corruption or HD-failure.
Here we are referring to data backups and archives, not system-backups for restoring your OS-system.
If your data on your hard drive is the cash in your wallet, a backup is your bank account/debit card, and an archive is a locked safety deposit box.
Its easy to get your wallet emptied (corrupted) or stolen, your backup checking account is somewhat easy to get corrupted/drained or damaged, but your bunker security is in the lockbox inside the vault, where your vital data and archives reside. In the premise of preventing data loss, you want as often and as much as possible one-way transfers from your “wallet” to your safety deposit box archives; and further still a minimum of two copies of those archives.
Highest priority (archives) requires highest redundancy.  In the premise of often copying data from backups to archives, backup redundancy plays a minor role.
Long-term active file backups (a book, a major time-involved video creation etc.) requires double-active redundancies, preferably a minimum of Time Machine and an autonomous external formatted HD, so there are at least three copies of this data: internal drive, Time Machine, and secondary non-TM HD backup.

  • How to restore just Mavericks from a Time Machine backup

    Macbook Pro 15", (early 2011) 2.0 GHz, 8GB memory
After having my WD 750GB HD crash, I decided that I would opt for a smaller (256GB) SSD drive and just put Mavericks and my apps on the new drive and keep my user files on an external drive. I've installed and formatted the new drive but I can't figure out how to install just OSX from Time Machine since the entire backup is too big for my new drive.  Before the drive failed, I had installed the latest update for Mavericks (10.9.3?) Thoughts?

I think you should do the following:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
