Can I restore My Macbook Pro from Backup?

Hello, actually, I'm buying the new Macbook Pro Retina Display.
I already have a Macbook Pro 13" 2011.
Can I do a Backup with Time Machine, and use it in the New Macbook Retina Display?
Would it work restoring everything that I already have on this computer?

Why not use migration assistant?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413
You can use Migration Assistant to transfer important information, such as user accounts, applications, network and computer settings, and files, from one Mac computer to another via a FireWire cable or over a wired or wireless network.
To use Migration Assistant you have four options for connecting the computers:
FireWire
Ethernet
Wireless
Time Machine backup or other disk

I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords).  What can I do?

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why the password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. You can select one of the available layouts by choosing from the flag menu in the upper right corner, if it's showing, or cycle through them by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See also this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password. In OS X 10.10 and later, this option also works with FileVault, but only if you enabled it when you activated FileVault. It's not retroactive. Otherwise, see below.
Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is active.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but the Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as the login password), there's no way to recover it.

  • Can't install from application install dvd and i can't update to 10.6.8 after i restore my macbook pro from mountain lion

can't install from application install dvd and i can't update to 10.6.8 after i restore my macbook pro from mountain lion. when restart and i press command it still has recovery mountain lion show on my screen.

What model is the MBP? Did it come with OS 10.6 or a later OS? Is the install DVD one that came with it or something else?
You can't run an OS older than Mac on it.
But if came with 10.6 installed & you have the system discs, you should be able to erase the drive & reinstall the original OS.

    That is great!
But the price ismore expensive than the United States.
In the United States's store $2199
In the United Ararb Emarates $2499.73
I can save $300 if I will from United States, but I want the Keyboard English and Arabic.

Excuse me. I am in Thailand. Can i buy Refurbished Macbook pro from US apple store?

The USA web store requires payment in US funds, from a US source, and with a US billing address for the account.  And as Limnos mentions, they do not ship internationally - they will only ship to a US street address (no P.O. Boxes so no re-shipper will work either).

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion or Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Can I wake my Macbook Pro from Sleep with the Remote app on the iPhone?

I can't access my Macbook Pro remotely, specially after several hours of inactivity,, whenever I try to access content of my library through the remote app or the Apple TV I'm unable to wake my Macbook Pro up.
My Macbook Pro is 2012 model (the last with de CD Drive) and it's running the Maverick OS, my questions are:
    * I'm unable to find the "Unable Power Nap while plugged" option on the energy saver tab... is that because the model of my laptop doesn't support that?
    * In order to access content from my library remotely, should the "Computer Sleep" option on the energy saver be on "Never" instead of the "1 hour" that I'm currently using... or is there a way to still be able to wake up the laptop with those settings

Do you have a Bonjour Sleep Proxy server on your network?
<About Wake on Demand and Bonjour Sleep Proxy>
If you do not have a Bonjour Sleep Proxy server on your local network, then you cannot allow your Mac to go to sleep at all.  System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Computer Sleep -> Never (slide all the way to the right).

  • Restore full macbook pro from time machine backup stored on Synology DiskStation DS411

    Hi,
I backed up my macbook pro (running Mac OS x 10.8) with time machine on a Synology DiskStation DS411.
I never had any problem to backup my entire computer (~330gb) with Time Machine, others colleagues do so.
Recently my hard drive failed and I had it replaced. I want to restore the full computer from this DiskStation. When I turn on the computer with the new drive, It proposes me to restore the data from a disk but can't find it even though I am plugged on the netwrok.
I tried to copy and paste the entire folder on an external hard drive with a windows 7 machine, then plugged the hard drive to the macbookpro but it could still not see the hard drive.
I don't really know what to do anymore. Can anyone help?
    Thanks.
    J

Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. This is an example of what can happen.
If your only backup is on the NAS, contact the vendor for support.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or a mini-tower (802.11ac) AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base station supports Time Machine, not any previous model.

  • What is the impact of restoring a MacBook Pro from 2009 to factory settings

I am concerned about all upgrades since original purchase as well as a verison of Office 2008 - all of which I intend to keep.

MacBook Pros are notebooks, Mac Pros are desktops.
Office 2008 was not prebundled with any Mac operating system in full release.   There are some Test Drive office releases that were released at times.   You'll have to find either your download direct from Microsoft, or CD from Microsoft to reinstall Office 2008.   Some have had difficulty with Office 2008 installer running on Mac OS X 10.7 or later.   You can try OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Zoho Docs as alternatives if all you do is Excel, Word, and Powerpoint.   Some Exchange servers require Microsoft's own e-mail program, while others work fine with Mac OS X Mail.   Your best bet is to backup your system at least twice before doing any restore to factory settings.

  • How can I restore my Macbook Pro to it's original operating system?

I am giving my old Macbook Pro to my mother in law and want to restore it back to factory settings. It was originally OSX6 but has been upgraded to OSX 10.8.3. When I try to use the disk that came with it, I get a message that I cannot use that version. Can I reset it to factory settings (wipe out all of my information) while still keeping the latest version of the OS? If not, is there a way to use the disk to restore it back to OSX 6?
    Thank you,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
OS X Mountain Lion is registered to your Apple and it can only be reinstalled using your Apple ID, so you shouldn't give it to your mother-in-law with Mountain Lion or she will have problems. Instead, reinstall the original Mac OS X version which came with your Mac, in your case, Snow Leopard.
To restore your Mac to factory settings:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your computer is starting to start from the DVD.
    2. Choose your language, go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility, choose the hard drive at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall Mac OS X.
When the installation finishes, hold the trackpad while your computer is starting to eject the DVD and turn off the computer, so your mother-in-law will be able to set up the computer as she wants. After setting it up, open  > Software Update and install the most recent version, and use the Applications DVD to install iLife apps

  • Can I upgrade my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard straight to Mountain Lion, or would it be wise to get Lion as well?

I am currently in the process of upgrading the operating system on my girlfriend's MacBook Pro (Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1). I have purchased and installed Snow Leopard successfully, however I would like to upgrade to the latest operating system, which to date is Moutain Lion.
Am I able to do this?
Is it wise to perform such an upgrade on this model of MacBook Pro (can it handle it)?
I have heard that I can upgrade straight from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this? Will I lose anything at all by not installing Lion before Mountain Lion?
Thanks for the help everyone. Hopefully I can get these questions answered soon.

And the only way to figure that out would be verifying my disk using the Disk Utility?
Thank you for that. If I am not missing out on anything by skipping Lion then that will be my option. A few extra dollars in my pocket is always a good thing.

one of my family members are there and they are not that much into computers, is it possible to buy it from here (Jordan) using a Jordanian Credit Card and put the shipping address in the states??
I didn't know where to post this exactly, so hope i can be answered and hope i can be directed into the right department instead of deleting it
    Thank you

Sorry, but the US Apple Store cannot accept credit/debit cards with billing addresses outside of the US nor checks on non-US banks.

  • Can I buy a Macbook Pro from Apple store Singapore and send it to Italy?

I' m wandering if I can buy a Macbook Pro Display Retina from Apple Store Singapore online and then send it to Italy. Please answer.
    Thank you :)

They will not send it to Italy.
If you want to take possession in Singapore and ship it yourself to Italy, you could.
When it arrives in Italy, your new MacBook will be subject to VAT at its brand-new value, perhaps 17 percent of the full Retail price.
I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish, but this does not seem to save you any money.
