Can I restore to exact original factory settings?

I cannot seem to find a way using the disks that came with the mac mini to restore the computer to exactly the way it came to me from the factory. I did a restore but it kept my user name, short name, password etc. intact.
Isn't there an option someplace which enable an entirely fresh reinstallation so that the computer looks exactly the way it looked the first time I turned it on?
I am not interested in keeping any configurations, software or any settings at all. I just want it to behave as it did the first time I turned it on.
Thanks

Erase the Mac OS X volume, then restore Mac OS X and all bundled software
Important: This option erases your destination volume (it deletes everything that's on it, including files on your desktop), so be sure that you've backed up your stuff before committing to this choice.
Back up your essential files.
Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer.
Double-click "Install Mac OS X and Bundled Software."
Follow the onscreen instructions until you get to the destination pane.
In the "Select a destination" window, click Options, then click "Erase and Install."

I have the same issue with this product HP CQ62  xa500ua#aba.
Went to restore my mother in laws laptop to factory using the hard drive but  recovery had error after 15 %, the recovery dvd's had been created so I tried those and got the error system recovery media does not suppor this computer.
She is one of the few people i know who created the recovery disks as soon as she got the computer.
The system was back up but the drive is wiped from the partial recovery.  I suspect the recovery image was invalid from the factory. Now what?

My Iphone 4 crashed and I lost my entire contact list. I restored it to original factory settings but in trying to restore my data from my laptop via Itunes.. this was the feedback: Itunes could not restore the Iphone Dr Johnny Siu Chong because the Iphone refused the request.
I cannot get help from Apple support because i am being asked to supply the serial number which is stored on the phone and I cannot restore my data in the first place. I am reluctant to "Set up as a new Iphone" since I don't know whether if I do I  may not then be able to access my data from Itunes...
Please advise what to do. I did not see any tutorials on Youtube to help me with this.
I look forward to an early response.

    Hey joshuafromisr,
If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    or here:

  • Can't restore MacBook Pro to factory settings/boot from usb or dvd

So I recently got a MacBook Pro, currently running OS X 10.7.4 Lion. I am well-versed in the world of Windows, however am quite new when it comes to macs (whole reason why I got it).
I'm trying to restore it to its factory settings without owning a restore disc. The HDD only has one partition (no recovery partition).
I have located and downloaded a torrent for an OS X installer, specifically a .dmg image file containing OS X 10.7.
I tried burning that image to a DVD, but when I go to boot from the DVD (to my understanding, this is done by holding "C" during boot) it doesn't work, and just continues to proceed to the logon screen as it normally would.
I have tried converting the image from a .dmg to a .iso (something I am far more familiar with) using one of my Windows machines, and then burning that to a DVD, however, it yields the same result as above.
I have tried using the Disc Utility to format a flash drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and then using the same Disc Utility to "restore" the image file to the USB drive. When I go to boot from this (holding alt/option at boot) it shows the internal HDD as the only bootable drive.
Is it possible that since I am technically running a newer version of Mac OS X (10.7.4 and using an installer of 10.7) that it will not allow me to do so? I know Apple has made it difficult to downgrade iPhones and the like, and I suppose it wouldn't surprise me a great deal to find out that the same applies to their computers.. But if I am attempting to boot from a different source, and use that to format and repartition my HDD, then I don't see why that would matter...
Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion, Shootist007, but that's not accurate.  There were no disks of any kind included with the MacBook Pro I bought.  I am very anal about keeping everything that comes with a computer.  I don't misplace or lose them.  I've been buying computers since '88, and I am very careful to maintain original items.  I searched the original MacBook Pro box several times, and there's nothing in there but the original purchase receipt from the Apple Store and the form fitting black plastic tray and cushion.
I did try wiring the system, and that's when it tried to restore Lion (and wouldn't let me do a restore of anything else).
Are you saying that if I do upgrade to Lion, and then do a system restore, then the buyer will not be able to use Lion?

  • HT1766 My computer crashed; had to restore back to original factory settings; how do I access my Itunes account now?

My computer crashed; had to restore it back to the original factory settings.  How do I get my I-Tunes account back on to the computer?  My I-phone (5) is fine, and has all the information on it.
I did have I-Cloud backing things up, I don't think it will restore all my podcasts, or the music I downloaded from my CDs.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.

  • Can I restore my iphone5 to factory settings if it was never synced with iTunes??

I dropped my phone in water, dried it out in rice and turned it on.  It instantly gave the me black apple icon screen.  I plugged it into my PC and itunes recognized the device.  It said that it was in restore mode and to restore it to factory settings.  I started the process, but it kept stopping after it began updating my iphone.  I'm wondering if it was doing this because I never synced my phone to iTunes previously and we only have the must recent version of iTunes on our PC, not the previous operating system version.  I attempted to download the firmware for the prior version, but when I click 'alt' and then 'restore iphone' and choose the the prior firmware file, iTunes just tells me that the firmware is outdated.  Any advice?  We do not have a Genius Bar anywhere within two hours of my location; so am trying to repair it on my own until I can purchase a replacement.  Thanks.

    Hello Sprashley,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
I would try these steps from the article named:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694#error9
    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if you manually disconnect the device during the restore process. You can resolve this issue by using USB troubleshooting, using a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • My ipod just adds apps but won't delete any. I can't restore it to its factory settings as I don't know the 4 digit code. Can anyone help please?

My ipod will add apps happily but it won't delete any so they've built up so now I can't add anymore. . I can't take it back to the factory settings because I don't know the 4 digit code. Please can someone help?! xxx

Sorry. You can't get help here. Ask whoever wrote the jailbreak.
You can try putting it in DFU mode (google is your friend), but that's all we can suggest.
Jailbreaking voids your warranty and AppleCare agreement and forfeits all rights to support.

Throw away any files which may contain sensitive data and securely empty the Trash.
If it shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, insert its original disk and restart the computer with the C key held down.
If it shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down.
Use the Disk Utility to erase the partition with Mac OS X installed, and then install a fresh OS onto it. If you used a disk and are going to sell or give away the computer, include the disk with it.

  • How can I restore my Ibook to factory settings?

I recenlty procured this Ibook from my uncle. He said that it stays at the apple start-up screen. I did the pmu and ram resets and it got farther to the Mac OS X start-up progress toolbar thing. It does that, and then it goes to a black screen, asking for a Darwin/BSD console login. I have no idea what it is, so I just want to use the restore discs to wipe the hard drive to get back to default settings. Or is there a totally different problem entirely? Can anybody help?

Before you do a Software Restore, try Niel's suggestion in this thread:

    It may help.

  • I can't restore the laptop to factory settings

Hi guys, i recently got a lot of viruses on my Toshiba laptop and i pretty much cant get onto the desktop because of it, so i decided to repair my laptop via disks, but when i get so far with it, it gives me this error message
"the file nvrd32.sys could not be found".
I have done a lot of Googling around and not yet found a solution so im posting this thread.
I have a Nvidia Quadro GFX card if that counts for anything.
I have 2 disks labeled "Drivers" and "XP SP2". I enter SP2 into the laptop and i still get the same message, can anyone help me out?

You said "So your best option would be to recover your data and run Recovery from your Recovery Discs to restore Windows back to its factory state."
If you read my message you would know that i have tried to do that and im getting this error message, im asking for help in how i can prevent this message.
I have AVG 8.0 full version, Ad-Aware, and Search and Destroy, all 3 cannon destroy all the viruses as they are duplicating, please provide me useful information someone please.

  • How can I restore a phone to factory settings without a menu or "Options"

My daughters phone.  1 year old.  She can text and rec texts.  Call and receive calls.  Alarm clock works.  When she hits menu it is blank.  She has no Applications.  Also the hour glass spins for a minute or two before it turns on.  We went to ATT store and they suggested restoring the phone.  THat isn't an option becuase she doesn't have the "OPTIONS BUTTON" available to her.
She called tech support thru ATT and they were not able to make any suggestions.  ANy ideas.
And NO she did not ever back up her phone to her computer.
    Frustrated 50 year old father.

    Hi!
Have you done a battery-pop reboot? It can clear some things up. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation.
After that, you can decide if you want to to a Wipe...but one step at a time.
    Cheers!

  • How can I restore my keyboard to factory settings? (some keys not working on new unit)

I bought an HP dv6-6167cl last night from Sam's Club and I like the notebook but for some reason the right shift key - ( a longer shift key with both "Pause" and "Shift" written on the key) does not work at all. I'm trying to determine if this is a driver or system configuration issue or if I need to exchange the computer for a different one. It may even be user error - is there some sort of trick to using this shift key? (function toggle or something)
    This question was solved.

Try to backup your personal files and perform a recovery which would put the Notebook back to factory condition. The instructions can be found below
