Can i retrieve files after a complete restore?

I restored my computer to give to a friend, and realized that I never got my iphone photos out of Iphoto.  Now they're gone forever, right?

I had backups of everything I took from the computer, but didn't think of getting iphoto (bc I never use it).  So that's a negative.  I'm trying to see if those files are still on the restored computer, hiding somewhere in the recesses.

  • Findind my backed up files after a complete restore

I just had to do a complete restore on my laptop and i really need help finding all of my files i had backed up i cannot find them and there were pics and imprtant legal documents on there please some one help me.....

Was the backup the backup performed during the recovery to an external device (DVDs, flash drive, external drive, etc.)?
What was the target backup device?
This document covers the basics of how this process should work.  Additionally, there should be a recovery executable (might not be called recovery, but should indicate that is what it's for) in the backup media.  If it's a disk, this would be on DVD 1.
What is the exact model of the notebook?  I might be able to find something a little more specific if I know which model the notebook is.
NOTE: Do NOT provide the serial number.

    Hi Sue,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Try a Repair on the External USB Drive.
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

How can I retrieve imessages after I restored my iphone 4 to factory setting and didn't back up prior to restore?

If you synch your phone to your computer via itunes,it performs a backup prior to synching. You can check by luanching itunes select preferences>devices, all backups should be shown there. If in fact there is a backup of your phone listed then do a restore of that back up.

  • After a complete restore of my Mac Pro, Time Machine is not completing backup (too little space)

I have foloowed Pondinis.org tips re actions after a complete restore (switched off LaCie, deleted psi-fil on HD) but it is still not working - any suggestions how I can make my backups run again? Thx

This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 248.04 GB but only 212.07 GB are available.
That sounds like it's trying to do a full backup -- if there's roughly 210 GB on your system (Time Machine adds 20% or so for workspace).
If so, and you did a full restore (by starting from your Recovery HD), Time Machine should have automatically "associated" your restored internal HD with the old backups.  It sounds like it didn't, and is treating it as a different one.
You may be able to manually tell it to "associate" the restored disk with the old backups, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  You'll  need the procedure in the pink box there.

  • Is it possible to retrieve files after trash has been emptied?

Is it possible to retrieve files after they have been emptied from trash?
I have over relied on USB sticks to transfer / store files, and have experienced a catastrophic failure of one particular USB stick,
with info that took me months to prepare.  Any good news out there?

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?

Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?  I have been having problems with my Macbook Pro not starting up.  I need to figure out how to access files with my PPC Desktop; if possible.
What type of files can I access and what type I cannot?
My Macbook Pro: MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 750GB HD, 2.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM
    My PPC: Power mac G4/Upgraded 1.2GHZ /800+RAM/3 HD =400+ GB, Mac OS X (10.4.2)
    Thanks in advance,
    God bless

You will need software that is compatible with the data files on the backup drive, ie. if they are .doc files you will need Word (or a substitute).
You don't mention what type of files are on the drive so it is hard to be specific.

  • Can't open file: "Could not complete your request because of a program error"

I have a Photoshop file that suddenly won't open.  Last week I upgraded to CS5--the file had been created in CS3 prior to that.  When I try to open it, I receive this error message (in CS5): "Could not complete your request because of a program error."  I tried to open the same file in CS3; there, the file opens, but as soon as I try to do anything I get the same error message....which, annoyingly, re-appears the second I click "OK," so the only thing I can do in CS3 is force-quit.
I've used Time Machine to retrieve versions of the file that were saved four days ago, seven days, and several weeks ago, and I get the same message every time.  Even on versions that were last saved with CS3 (before I installed CS5).
Naturally, this is one of the most important files in my life right now....it's a 300 MB file that contains hundreds of layers and dozens of comps.  So the fact that I suddenly can't open it, after shelling out $1200 to upgrade to the latest and greatest Adobe has to offer, is, to say the least, distressing.
    Any advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks,

First thing I would do is investigate hard drive issues and the health of the OS.

  • Can't sync IPhone after PC crash/restore

Hi, hopefully someone can help me.
My PC crashed.  I had to take it back to original settings, completely restoring the hard drive.  Once complete, I reinstalled ITunes 11 and restored my data from external backup.
Now I can't sync our IPhones to ITunes because I get an error that my IPhone is associated with another ITunes library.  I'm not sure how to go about solving this issues.
I had contemplated uninstalling ITunes and the library and starting fresh because some of the music stored on the external backup was duplicated when I reinstalled it as some was stored in the ITunes cloud.
Any ideas on how to sync the IPhones would be appreciated.

Do you mean simply trash the iTunes app?
If so, then how do I reinstall it, that is, where do I find the files to do so?  A spotlight search of my iMac didn't show any file with which to do so, and a search on Apple Support discuss Windows systems only.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Can i retrieve files i put in the trash

i deleted files but i want them back how can i retrieve them on my macbook pro

If you didn’t empty the Trash, drag them out.
If you have a backup of them, restore them from it.
If neither of those is applicable, try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

  • After a complete restore of Mac from a Time Machine volume, I don't want a full backup the next time Time Machine backs up.

After performing a complete restore of my Mac from a Time Machine volume, Time Machine wants to perform a full backup the next time it backs up.This is normal: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
But I don't have enough free space on my external hard drive to do this because my external hard drive already contains one complete backup. My hard disc on my MacBook is 320 and my external drive is 500 GB, so it doesn't add up. I don't want to delete the original backup in case something goes wrong during the new full backup. What can I do?

You don't have too many options.  The best approach would be to buy a larger external drive.  The guideline for Time Machine is that you should have 2-3 times as much capacity on the external drive as data you're backing up.  See item 1 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  In any case, you can't prevent that first full backup unless you're willing to turn off Time Machine permanently.

  • Can't download files after Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hello all,
yesterday I upgraded my leopard to snow leopard, since then I cannot download files with safari (also tried firefox, camino). When I click some link it looks like its going to start downloading but it doesn't. Most of the links are .dmg files. I have tried these steps so far but the problem still occurs.
    1) Repair the Disk Permissions.
    2) Downloaded onyx to clean the system.
    3) Cleaned the safari cache and settings, as well as the plugins directory.
    4) installed firefox and camino but they act the same.
    5) I uninstalled iGetter (if I copy the link location and add it to iGetter I can download the file).
    6) I created a new User to check if the problem was system wide or with the user account. The problem is the same in the new user account as well.
Any ideas what to try next ?
    Thank you all in advance.
    John.
    ps: I have 10.6.2 and safari 4.04.

Try using your OnyX to clean the LaunchSevices caches, or use Terminal.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Time machine started over after a complete restore, how to get to older?

Yesterday, photoshop and parrallels started crashing and I could not get them working, So I decided to do a complete system restore from install disk time machine from the day before when everything was working fine.
so it restored the system to its previous state. parrallels was still not working correctly so I restored the folder from a week or so ago. That didn't get it back either, so I thought of maybe reloading the application from an earlier time period might help.
But, time machine has started itself over. there is only backup data from this morning in the time machine internal backup drive. How do i get to my older backups? Do they just go away after a system restore?

    Sam,
No, you need to Ctrl-Click the Time Machine DOCK icon. Then choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks...".
Here is a thought. When you did the restore, what Mac OS version did you restore. Your states say 10.5.5 but might your Mac have been restored to 10.5.4 or earlier with your restore?
I have found in my own testing, that since the 10.5.5 update, "Archive & Installs", "Erase & Installs", and "Restore System From Backup..." no longer trigger a new full backup. That is they continue to use the same backup set as before. (Note though, you will likely see a very large incremental backup, but not necessarily a new Full Backup set.) See my comments here:
If, however, you restored to a Mac OS version previous to 10.5.5, and then allowed Time Machine to perform a backup, then a new Full Backup would be preformed. Likely, you might be able to avoid this if you do the restore (prevent Time Machine from backing up), update to 10.5.5, then allow Time Machine to backup.
    Cheers!

  • Can't open file after Keynote crashed

I was working on a large Keynote file (about 130 Mb), when Keynote (4.0.1) quite unexpectedly. It happened a few times before, and I thought it was because of the instability of the new Leopard system. This time, however, I could not open the file after the crash. An error message was displayed: "Can't open file" followed by the path and the file name.
Does this happen to anyone else? Can anyone help? I hate to lose the work and go back to an early version.

Keynote and Leopard, especially in their newest iterations, are remarkably stable. That said, no file, program, or OS is totally immune from corruption. Whenever a program, or worse, your Mac, even starts to behave strangely, your first step ought to be to attend to it with a good fixit utility. Repairing permissions is usually fruitless, since it's highly unlikely there's a permissions problem. You already own *Disk Utility*, so you should try to repair the disk with that. Unfortunately, DU's disk repair is pretty wimpy, often unable to repair a problem, or erroneously reporting no problem when one obviously exists.
So, if you own a Mac, you owe it to yourself to buy at least one (but better, two) industrial-strength utility. There are really only three to choose from:
    1. DiskWarrior is an absolute must. It's unbeatable in rebuilding the directory, and the directory is usually what's corrupted. It can now fix files, too, which is also helpful.
    2. *TechTool Pro* is an excellent suite of fixits - directory, files, defrag, and some hardware tests. It also has a wonder feature, the eDrive. This is a small (10GB) bootable partition on your boot drive which has, among other things, TTP on it. If your main boot partition has a problem, you can boot from here and usually fix things. AFAIC, it's an absolute must on a laptop which you take on trips, far from your collection of fixit disks. You can also put DW on this partition, so you have everything you need right at your fingertips.
    3. *Drive Genius* is a relative new-comer, also a good suite of fixits, and, I believe, does backups, too.
I have 1 and 2, and that has saved me from catastrophe more than once. 1 and 3 would probably be good, too. (You ought to have more than one of these serious apps because one can sometimes fix something another can't - different proprietary algorithms.)
One last thing: if you have anything on your computer it'd break your heart to lose (and who doesn't), remember +The First Rule of Computing+: There are two kinds of computer users: those who have already lost all their data at least once, and those who have not yet lost all their data at least once. So: *backup, backup, backup*. I vote for bootable clones, done often (at least daily if you work daily), TimeMachine is pretty good, and there are other options. Pick one, and do it religiously.
