Can I reuse my iMac G5's hard drive as an external drive?

The logic board on my G5 (was running Tiger) quit working so I am enjoying a new late 2009 21.5" iMac. The documents were transferred from the drive as a part of the one to one program but I'd like to see other stuff on the drive.
I put the old G5's hard drive into an enclosure and hooked it up to the new iMac via firewire. The drive can be seen but a message asking me to format the drive appears. Is there any way to make the drive readable by the new iMac without re-formatting it?
Alternatively, I have a 15" Titanium Powerbook. Could the drive be made readable by the Powerbook (which sees but also asks to format the drive)?
Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I have to think that something has occurred to the HDD since it was inside you old PPC Mac. It would have been formatted with Apple Partition Map and although the Intel Mac cannot boot from a drive formatted APM, it should be able to read and write to one.
Probably the only way to do what you want to do, unless the drive has been erased, is to attach the drive to another PPC Mac and then access it from the Intel Mac over a network through file sharing.

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive is malfunctioning.

  • HT1589 iMac:  How do I move my iTunes folder from one external hard drive to another external drive?

Due to file size reasons, I found myself several years ago with the need to move my iTunes Library from my desktop's internal drive to an external drive [which I also used via partition for a backup of my internal drive]  I now have to move to a different external hard drive -- again for more space.  I've copied the iTunes Library to the new drive, but can't seem to get iTunes to recognize and run it.
What specifically do I need to do to get this done?

You could plug the WD drive straight into the TC but it will be much faster to do it with the WD drive plugged into the computer.. and just mount the TC hard disk in Finder.
To move itunes library you must follow the Apple instructions.. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
You may need to reconnect itunes to the library before you try to move it.. !!

Only if you move it to an external enclosure and let them both access it through a file server.

  • Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up.

Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up normally. Why do these key fonctions no longer work?

It could be your timing if on a bluetooth keyboard.  I find it best to hit the keys as soon as i hear the chime, release and hit them again but this time holding them before the chime ends....like a fake pump in football.
But....you can always open up system preferences, startup disk, and select your bootable clone for booting.  If it doesn't show up there, the Mac doesn't think it's bootable.

  • I have a new iMac 27 and a new Blu Ray external drive.

I have a new iMac 27 and a new Blu Ray external drive. What is the best way to burn a BluRay disk? I read about TOAST etc but they are getting bad reviews. What software is the best? Im running mountain lion of course. Anyone know of good software to burn this type of disk that ACTUALLY works?

    Okay, a couple of things:
I still use (mostly) an old version of iMovie because it was/is the only version which will process footage losslessly. However, the newer versions are okay - just do not use the automatic share option, but use  the export to quicktime option where you have many options as to quality, size, etc:
You will wind up with a .mov file you can drag into Toast to burn (or iDVD to add menus and burn). If in iDVD, you can either burn directly (but not bluray) or make a VIDEO_TS folder which can be dragged into Toast - I also use that if I want to keep a copy to burn later as it has all the necessary files so you can ditch or archive all your clips, etc.

  • Can I copy and store Aperture 3.5 library on an external drive ExFAT?

    Hi
Can I copy and store Aperture 3.5 library on an external drive ExFAT?

No, as Allan Eckert said. Storing your library on and external drive is no problem, but it requires MacOS Extended (Journaled):
You may want to have a look a these support documents:
Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
    and
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3509?
The same goes for iPhoto Libraries:

Does any one know the hot key / command to hard delete from an external Drive (i.e. delete direct without having to put in trash first)?

Nothing happens on a hard drive that doesn't involve the computer.
Here's a list of all the keyboard shortcuts. I don't see anything such as you have described, so perhaps you once used a keyboard macro or have not described what you mean properly.

  • I have removed the hard drive from my laptop and connected it to my netbook as an external drive. Now, I can't find or acces my saved Firefox bookmarks on the external drive. How do I get it to display like it did on the original laptop?

Now that I am using it as an external drive, how do I get the harddrive I removed from my laptop to display like it did when it was still in the laptop , when I connect it to a new computer?. I can't locate my Firefxox bookmarks that I originally saved to the HD when it was in the laptop. The laptop is dead but fortunately I was able to salvage the hard drive. I Need help urgently since I have tons of bookmarked pages and saved passwords that are critical to my work and life. The original laptop that the HD came from has a Windows Vista OS. The netbook I connect the HD to uses Windows XP.

  • Can I make an iBook hard drive into an external drive for a MacBook?

    Hi,
After 5 years my beloved G3 iBook has died. The diagnosis is a failed logic board. I am purchasing a MacBook, assuming the iBook drive is still OK; can I extract it from the iBook and build it into a suitable case so it becomes an external drive for my new computer? Will I have worry about any software clashes between the two drives.
As always your advice will be treasured,
    Thanks

    Yes you can do that.
Will I have worry about any software clashes between the two drives.
No, it will just be an external drive like any other.

  • HT1449 can i use this process for moving my library to an external drive?

My iMac is dying a slow death and I want to run itunes and iphoto off my external drive as the data may get corrupted if it stays on the computer hard drive.
If I designate a folder on my external drive and then cosolidate will that allow me to run itunes from the external drive?
When My iMac fails will I be able to take the data from that folder for the new iMac?
    Thanks,

I'd suggest you just drag the entire iTunes folder (the _entire_ folder, _not_ just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Option key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location. Note that this procedure assumes that all of your content is contained in the iTunes Media/Music folder. If things are scattered around your drive, moving them becomes much more complex.
As to moving iPhoto, you may want to confirm the correct procedure for your version of iPhoto in the iPhoto forums.
Your iMac cannot be running Mac OS 9.2.x, by the way. It will help people offer advice if you'll correct that.
    Regards.

  • How Can Install & Boot Windows 7 or Vista or XP Using your External Drive?

Hi. Windows 7 64-bit says you can't install it to a USB (or firewire) external hard drive. If you need to just test some Windows program and you just have an iMac (only one you can afford) Intel and speed/performance is not really going to be an issue, has anyone tried booting and installing Windows using their USB external drive? Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

    Hi,
sadly Microsoft doesn't like Windows to be installed and booted of an external device.
Their descision and Apple follows it.
To install Windows 7 of an external USB-memory Stick, then one with 8GB should suffice.
To install Windows 7 on an USB-Stick then the more space the better.
I am not really into USB-sticks having some lying around but mostly smaller sized ones.
Kingston, Corsair, Transcend seems to be good brands.

  • Can I move all data from time machine backup to another external drive & work from it?

Hi all, the harddrive on my macbook died (2nd time in a year) & I had a new one put in that's much smaller than the old one.  Can I move everything from my time machine backup onto a seperate external drive and work directly from that on my laptop/imac?  At the mo. I don't think time machine will recognise my computer as it's a new drive etc.  Thanks Jenny.

What exactly do you want to do?
Is it that you wish to extract an older version of some documents to edit, but leave the original intact?
You can Restore an older version from TM and choose not to replace the current one.
Or, do you wish to install the OS on your new drive, and migrate all the information from the TM backup to the new isntallation?
EDIT: Ok, re-reading your question, I think macjack probably has the right idea.
However, see Pondini's Time Machine FAQ # 16
