Can I revert Tiger to a previous build without reinstalling?

I have been having a myriad of problems with my backup machine lately, specifically Retrospect 6.1 locks up during a midnight backup of the local hard drive.
None of these lockups occurred with any build of OS X 10.3.x and it was most stable with Tiger on version 10.4.3. Last week I erased and reinstalled OS X, with all updates to 10.4.6 (thinking I might have had something corrupted in the install) but it has locked up again last night. The Console lists nothing in crashreporter and all Retrospect says is "Automatic backup terminated due to a possible power loss". If I don't use Retrospect the machine is 100% stable, but I can't accept that answer unless somebody can recommend me a better automated backup program then Retrospect.
I'll be running a full check on the hard drive later but is there any way to revert to a previous build of OS X Tiger without having to reinstall completely?

Upgrade your copy of Retrospect, or get Superduper 2.1. Superduper I found works a lot better than Retrospect in Tiger now.
Downgrading is possible if your clone from a previous version is in good shape.
But reinstalling is not wise unless you erase and install for reasons I state in my FAQ:

Before you revert anything try this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

You can with a Snow Leopard DVD, but if you don't have that or a Time Machine backup there's no way.

How can I revert back to a previous Java Update

I am having issues with my software since the last java update. At the moment the only option i see to fix this issue is by reverting back to my previous java update. Please please tell me how to do this. Apple's decision to bundle java into the the OS is really quite frustrating. Not easy to have multiple versions of java on the same system.

How can I restore Tiger to the previous 10.4.10 version?

Just like many others posting in the forum, I to am having a bit of trouble with Safari 3.0. Unfortunately, my school seems to be the only one who hasn't update their system to support Safari 3.0 so this becomes an issue-no trouble accessing all other sites and no other problems after the install. You might then be wondering what the problem is if everything else working is correctly. Well, my access to the schools site is essential for posting, homework, quiz's etc. I was happy with the previous Tiger version but thought it would be good to updates since the description hinted security and capability stability. Is there any way (other than utilizing another browser type) to revert to the 10.4.10, which includes Safari 2.0 without disrupting the systems operating efficiency?

Two methods I know of:
1.) I always do a full back up before I apply any update or upgrade. If you have a full back up, just run a full restore.
2.) If you don't have a full back up; get out your Tiger disks and do an Archive and Install then download and install the 10.4.10 COMBO update for your machine (get the right one, Intel or PPC).

Yes, you can downgrade, as long as Apple is still signing the 8.2 firmware for your iPod touch. I successfully did this with my iPad Air several days ago. Check out my 18 April post in this thread. I found the video useful and read the instructions a few times.
A few on the thread considered this a "jailbreak." It isn't. The linked site pulls its firmware directly from Apple's own servers. There were a few minor inconveniences. For example, I had to reinstall a handful of apps that had updated after the upgrade to 8.3, and the downgrade left some artifact files that freaked one user out.
I would, of course, preferred to have Apple fix the problem. However, I wasn't going to let my XPS170 be crippled while I waited. Besides, when they debug this issue I'll just upgrade, or maybe wipe and upgrade to a working version.

You seem to have hidden the Add-ons toolbar: View > Toolbars > [X] Add-on Bar

It may be possible that the firmware update did not take properly. You can either try reinstalling it or, if you prefer, downgrading the firmware. The following Apple Support Article provides the details.

OS X doesn't have a "system restore" like Windows has.
You have to use TimeMachine or a external clone previously made.

Uninstall all your add-ons, remove Firefox for now and use Safari
Use a external drive to make a copy of your user files only (not Timemachine) and disconnect all drives.
If you've installed crapware like MacKeeper you need to uninstall it here

If you've installed a always on anti-virus you need to uninstall it using the devlepers uninstaller

Stick in your 10.6 install disk and reboot holding the c key down, boot off the disk and simply reinstall 10.6
reboot holding the Shift key down, then Apple menu > Software update to 10.6.8
reboot and try running all your third party software, a few may not work and have to be reinstalled as they insert kext files into OS X which you just replaced.
check the status of your plugins like Flash and Silverlight here, update if needed

Now go to System Preferences and create another new user and log into it, does things seem fine?
Now log into your original user, does it seem fine?
Now install Firefox by itself, does it seem fine?
Add add-ons one at a time in FF, does everything seem fine?
Try FF in the new user, everything seem fine?
It should be, you've just replaced your OS X, bundled programs and replaced Firefox.
If something still is occuring but only in that first user then you need to transfer personal files to the new user and delete the old one it's corrupted. You can re-create the first user again and transfer files back so things work again (itunes playlists etc.)
Next time make a TimeMachine drive or a Carbon Copy Cloner which is bootable and updates on your scheduale.

So, the data stores in this computer is the new one that I may not use. It is the same I want to forget. What if I use the backup I have restore on the other computer I have? Can I install ONLY Compressor 1.2.1 without reinstalling FCP 4.5?

I need to reinstall Compressor 1.2.1 (the earlier version before I update) because of the dreaded "cannot connect to background process" (paraphrase) error. I can get to the custom install screen and uncheck everything except Compressor, but I can't uncheck the FCP app itself. Do I have to reinstall FCP, too, just to reinstall Compressor?!?!
I have 4.5 HD and am using a G5 dual 2 (NOT Intel) with 1.5GB of RAM, and am running OS X 10.4.8.

Thanks... just one more quick question:
After I re-installed Compressor 1.2.1 and restarted, I got an error message saying "An item in the Startup Items folder ("/Library/StartupItems/Qmaster") does not have the proper security settings." and then the rest of the message... My question is, do I need to have Qmaster running if I'm not using a cluster? It seems like no matter what I do now, I can't get Compressor to work (reinstall it without my Ethernet cable attached, reinstalling only the Compressor .pkg file/bundle, etc.). Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong or what I have to do to get this to work? I tried to bypass Compressor and let DVDSP 3.0.2 handle all the encoding, but no matter how low I make the MbPs, I still get an error message that it's too high. I also have chapter markers, so I'm not sure of a work-around.
Again, I'm using the FCP 4.5 HD package. Is this common? I'm thinking of using iDVD...it's not as professional, but at least it works.
