can i run a printer off the ethernet cable connection without hurting the imac or is the ethernet slot only for internet connection?

    Hi, Alan -
How can I connect to both printer (HP 4050n, via direct connection) and internet (via LAN), as my iMac has only one R45 port?
You can, but you'll need to expand your cabling a bit.
You'll need to get an intermediate ethernet hub, switch, or router. That device sits alone, with the Mac, your printer, and your modem/LAN plugged into it.
If you are already using a router, either separate or in combination with the modem (many modems have a built-in router), then you just need a hub or switch.
I use an ethernet switch (10/100/1000) to let both my Macs (a 2010 iMac and an elderly G4 DA model) use my HP4000n printer and my modem. The ethernet switch is a passive device, meaning there's no setup nor instructing it required - it's truly plug-and-play. All four items (two Macs, printer, and modem) are plugged into it via ethernet; both Macs have full-time independent access to the printer and the modem.

  • Can I run an iMac G3 266 in Kiosk mode?

I have an old iMac G3 266 that I want to donate to the local YMCA.
They need something to have for members to complete an online form.
The computer is running OS 8.6.
Is there a way I can:
    1) Run it in kiosk mode and have it go to one website
    OR
    2) Upgrade it to OS X and run it in kiosk mode
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I suggest checking out iCab. See icab.de
    "Kiosk mode
While in Kiosk mode, iCab will cover the whole screen and all other applications are blocked. The Kiosk mode is the ideal environment when the computer is accessing a public place (like fairs, exhibitions, hotels etc.) where users should be able to obtain information, yet prevent any external access to your system. Additionally, the access can be restricted to certain pages (even refusing referrals, if you choose)."

  • Can Panther run Intel iMac?

I have a 20" flat screen Intel-based iMac. It came with Leopard and runs great (10.5.6). This computer replaces an older crt iMac which had a maximum OS capability of OS 10.3.9. I use Vectorworks 10 Mechanical cad software, published by Nemetschek. It runs fine on 10.3.9. They are not planning on making it compatible with Leopard and want me to purchase their $700 upgrade instead, even though I've been a loyal user for 15 years and have upgraded many times previously. I tried to start-up the new iMac from an external 750 GB LaCie harddrive on which I installed the OS 10.3.9 system from the original cds, but the Preference panel did not recognize that there was an external drive with this OS on it. The old iMac boots just fine from the LaCie so I know that the 10.3.9 is installed correctly on it. The icon for the LaCie drive, and all the other documents installed on it, appear on the new iMac's screen and can be opened without any problems-it's just that it seems that the new iMac Preference panel doesn't want to acknowledge there is a drive connected to it that has the OS 10.3.9 available. Can the new iMac run on 10.3.9? What is the minimum (oldest) OS that this new iMac can run on?

Can the new iMac run on 10.3.9?
No. 10.3.x will not run on any Intel-based Mac.
What is the minimum (oldest) OS that this new iMac can run on?
Adding to what Kappy said, only the specific version of Leopard that came with the system or a later release will work. An earlier version of the OS will not have the drivers to run your iMac's hardware.

  • Can i run an iMac lying down? and what ventilation do i need for it to run inside a road case?

I am planning to build an all in one roadcase for all my equipment that is plug and play for touring. I've got a 27" i7 iMac and want to run it lying down inside the roadcase.
I want to know if an iMac is can be run laying down or will this harm it?
And how i would tackle issues of overheating if the imac is running enclosed? (vents etc)
Any help or advise would be great. I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help me but its worth a shot.
    Thanks

I am not 100% sure of this but there is a fan inside the imac which is designed to suck air in from the bottom and blow it out the top.  To some degree I think it also depends on convection currents (i.e., depending on heat rising).  So laying it on its side sounds like a bad idea to me.

  • Can I run an Imac on just an external hard drive via USB 3.0?

I erased the internal hard drive to clean install Yosemite (from Snow Leopard) but  now it's not visible in disk utility. Got an external drive with Yosemite to boot and run on my Mac (2010 21.5" 4gb ram, Core i3). Can I use a usb 3.0 external drive to replace the HDD? Looking to use a WD My Studio that runs at 7200 rpm. Only issue I have is the fan is on constantly. How long can I get away using the external drive before I have to replace the internal drive?

Take care of the problem now. You can continue to use the external drive, but you will need to use fan control software to deal with the fan.
    Macs Fan Control 1.1.12.2
    HDD Fan Control 2.5

  • My house has a wired ethernet to many rooms.  Can I have my imac connected via ethernet (then to router via comcast cable modem) and also have my airport extreme connected to another outlet?

Not experianced in networking.  Current working setup is wireless network with airport extreme.  Having problems with signal so may need to expand network with another airport. My house has a wired ethernet to most rooms.  What is the best approach to maintain wireless network and also use ethernet wired connections where convienient?

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • Can I connect my HP 4200tn Printer to my iMac using an ethernet/usb adapter

Here's my situation...PLEASE HELP! I have an HP Laserjet 4200tn printer that I'm trying to hook up to my iMac. The HP printer has an ethernet port, but I can't use the iMac ethernet port directly because it's being used for my dsl. I talked to the guys at the apple store & they told me to buy a usb/ethernet adapter from them(so here's the path...HP ethernet port to usb/ethernet adapter to usb port on the iMac). What's next? I'm assuming downloading the driver from HP but then what...I'm not a computer genius but I can find my way around a keyboard...PLEASE HELP!

If the adapter works with the printer, and you can get a recent and proper
driver from the HP support or downloads page, it should be able to print.
And there may be alternative drivers from gimp-print open source.
There also are powered ethernet hubs you can get, so all things ethernet
can be run from the main port on the computer and not be underpowered.
In fact, I have one in a box I don't use just yet because I can run my Epson
printer via USB over my AirPort Express (or AirPort Extreme) base station
and then the other printer, an all-in-one HP OfficeJet something, can run by
wire; since it won't work as a Bonjour printer and isn't seen as an option.
Some are supported and others may be conditionally able to work in these
different situations; so you may have to change your plans if a powered
Ethernet bridge, or whatever, becomes a second option; or other ideas fail.
The options include using the printer as USB, ethernet, or wireless; and
the latter may include the need to choose a compatible wireless bridge
or a wired Ethernet powered hub. And then seeing if you can get the
printer setup to see the printer when configured in whatever selection
or setup you've chosen to use can be equally ufn (unfun.)
If I wanted to run the HP I have by ethernet, it could do it; but you have to
note these things get an ID like the internet, sort of, if you use Ethernet.
Some adapters work and others may not; so it could be a hit & miss trial.
And some say there are advantages to the Ethernet if used on a network.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can I run time capsule on both my imac and pc laptops?

Can I run time capsule on both my Imac and pc laptops?

Depends on what you mean by "run".  Both the Mac and PC could connect using either wireless or Ethernet.
The iMac could backup automatically using Time Machine over wireless or Ethernet.
Genie TimeLine Pro might be able to backup the PC automatically, but you would need to check on this with the Genie folks to confirm.

Hi you have basicly 2 Options.
1 -if you Switch One fotostream on all 3 devices of yours which are working on the same apple id -all Fotos you Take with your iPad will be synchronized via icloud to the other 2 decvices ( w-lan and battery depending).
2- If you select foots or a whole album in iPhoto on your air or iMac and choose than puplish --> fotostream --> new or existing event you can key in a friends mail. If this friend has iCloud and iPhoto ( for iMac or MacBook ) and click on the link in the email it will download this fotos in the fotostream section in iPhoto. If he has a iPad, iPhone,... It will do it in the foto app and if he doesn't have a iCloud account at all and you choose "public web site" while publishing he can see your fotostream on a website.

  • IMac can't running any two fire wire hard disks at the same time . which

iMac can’t running any two fire wire hard disks at the same time . which two hard disks have extra power from power socket . If i just insert one of them .No problem . If connect two Hds at the same time. Leopard cant find it and the Hds seem no problem. the machine must be restarted and then use one . No problem . I have formated the HD many times .even if which format is Fat 32 or Mac issue persists .Boot from installation CD used the disk utility . Issue stills . If i used one fire wire HD that get power from power socket and used one fire wire device . Leopard was no problem during this time . Whether is this design problem or my machine hardware problem? My Mac has been changed the logic board by Apple service . Do you have similar case in here????

  • How can i get my Imac, running OSX 10.6.8 with a 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, how can i get Final Cut Pro 4 and DVD studio pro 2 to run on it?

I just bought an IMAC running OSX 10.6.8 (not sure what flavor that is). The processor is 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (Late 2006). When i run Final Cut Pro 4 on it I get the following error.
                        "Configuration error
This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing
                                    * AGP graphics Card"
If Final Cut Pro 4 doesn't run on my system, what version of Final Cut can I run on this as I am a filmmaker and really am comfortable with Final Cut Pro.
On the same note I also have DVD studio Pro 2 and that just quits without any message.
Hope any of you can be some help.
    Thank you,
    Doug

This is my first mac in a long time so i'm not sure about what this mac is as i didn't buy this from apple (ala Amazon). I'm a tad confused about the Intel/PowerPC thing. I do know the software version for sure, but the Intel/PowerPC is very confusing. I just need to find someone who would know about this question. It doesn't say G5 on this computer. Thats my biggest confusion. Help Me...

  • My iMac running Mountain Lion can't see my iMac running Snow Leopard on my network.

My iMac running Mountain Lion can't see my iMac running Snow Leopard on my network.  Both Macs work fine and the SL Mac can see and connect to the ML Mac.

    There isn't a script.
Mail connects to any standard email server.
Open the Connection Doctor from the Window menu.
Click Show Details and Check Again.
What errors does it post trying to connect to your email provider.
I dont' think there is any personal information in the output, but you might want to sanitize the output in a text editor before posting the output here in case there is a login user name or something like that.

It would depend on how old your IMac is, how mush memory you have, it it can be upgraded by OWC, etc. I have a 2006 Macbook Pro and would NOT put Mavericks on it or espeacially FCP 10.1.1 on it because the most memory it can have is 4 GB. You need at least 8 GB to work with Final Cut Pro 10.1.1. IMHO.
I would try to find a copy of Final Cut Express perhaps.
