Can I run a Sawtooth without an internal HDD?

Hey all,
I recently started seeing my S.M.A.R.T. staus on my non-factory internal HDD as "failing" once in a while. Having some experience with this in the past, I decided to immediately dump the entirety of my 100GB WD internal ATA onto my maxtor firewire external. I then went to buy a replacement internal.
I decided on a Seagate 300GB, finding out at home, of course, that the Sawtooth doesn't recognize (natively at least) more than 128. OK, well, so that one goes back.
In the meantime, during the long and drawn-out process of figuring that out, My computer stopped starting up. I.e., there is of course no OS on the new HDD, (nor the original 30GB that was also in there as a slave to my WD that went bad) so I was trying to boot up off of the Tiger install disk via my lacie firewire optical drive. After the gray "apple" screen I'd get a kernel panic... every time.
I started up the sawtooth via target disk mode, hooked up to my MacBook. I could see the new drive in there (I'd totally unhooked the 30GB original by this point trying to isolate the panic issues) and that it was 'only' 127GB large. I formated it. Still, none of this seemed to matter. Kernel panic everytime I tried to start up from the external.
So, as to the title of this thread...
Can I just remove all of the internal HDDs? Is there a performance hit for running an OS off of an external firewire (or USB2 via a PCI card) compared to the ATA bus on the Sawtooth?
I know this computer is running out of life. It's been an awsome workhorse for years now. I do plan on getting a new desktop before too awful long, but I'd like to get a little more out of this one.

well first off you cannot boot OS X from usb firewire of course.
Not exactly true.
First, it is either USB or firewire, not 'USB Firewire' - they are two separate and distinct buses.
All G4s except the G4 (PCI) model can boot to either a firewire or a USB drive using OS 9.
OSX can indeed boot from an external firewire drive. Older versions of OSX can not boot from a USB drive; not sure about Tiger.
the reason you were having problems booting from the stock drive is because you had plugged into the Slave cord. you cannot boot from a slave drive
Incorrect.
It makes no difference on a G4 (AGP) model whether a drive is jumpered as Single, Master, or Slave, provided that the jumpering is correct for the number of drives - all internal drives are bootable for all OS's valid for the machine (depending upon some size restrictions being adhered to).
It also makes no difference which connector on the ATA bus the drive is connected to - except that if there is but one drive on the bus, the end connector should probably be used.

Hi,
You can execute F.19 without posting. To do it, go to Posting tab and remove "Create posting" field. it will give you report without posting it.
instead of Using F.13, use FBL3N and in GL account give your GR/IR account.
It will work....

No, you cannot, it is not possible to operate a C5500 without a supervisor card.

So what I did was, I had bought my iMac from a shop and asked them to do bootcamp for me. However, they installed 32 bit instead of 64. My fault, I did not make my self clear about it. So after it has been delivered to my house, I realized that I wanted the 64 bit. I tried to remove windows on bootcamp but honestly, I have not experienced this before. So I failed. I believe, I did something wrong.
So I opened the iMac and it keeps asking me to go to windows. Windows OS also corrupted.
I tried the Option Key but the only option is Windows 7 only. So using a different keyboard, I press option and it only shows Windows HDD and the Mac HDD has gone.
What am I going to do? How can I restore Mac OS without the HDD anymore?

On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7pm bootcamp without an optical drive. I watch lots of football on sop cast and other such windows based programmes but can't work out how to do it.

Actually Windows can be installed and booted from an external drive if the drive is connected eSATA (external SATA), since the drive is treated as if it's an internal HDD. I used the same method previously to dual-boot from 2 different HDD instead of partitioning.
Most PC motherboards come with them as standard so it's pretty much plug and play but I don't recall seeing a recent Mac with eSATA connectivity though, so that might not be an option for you.

for example, ms word executable file is winword.exe, but in java i am using the following command:

the thing is, i dont know where ms word is installed on every machine, so rather than making an assumption, do you know how i can run ms word without specifying the full path?

1) You could ask the user to tell you where it's at (and remember for next time)
2) You could do a file search for it (and remember it for next time)

Agree with Nicolas. You need to modify connection string to point to proper server name. This might help in getting proper name of instance.

How can I run a XControl without wire Input/Output?

Hello!
I'm trying to developped some XControls. I want that these XControls run automatically without to wire him an Input/ooutput. I tried to do this, but the XControl only executes once, and then never entry again. I think that it is possible to do this because the XControl input/output is not required.

Ok, thank you. The problem is... I want to create some controls to ease the development of SCADAs. The idea is create some XControls, and when I place them in the SCADA Front Panel create a pop-up to insert the configuration (I did this part and it works well, the information is about the dispositif to connect...). And then, I don't want to wire anything to the XControl; because this application is for other persons can to develop the SCADA without knowledge of LabVIEW. The application that I have is not a good because I haven't used correctly the XControl to try to solve this requirement. I shold think in another solution, but... maybe... I can take the input of this XControl programmatically?

Why can't I transfer files from usb internal hdd on my mac?

I am trying to restore a back-up (not via time-machine) from an external HDD dock, I've put an internal HDD in there.
I'm constantley confronted with this error: "The finder can’t complete the operation because some data in "8A5A0887.MOV" can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)".
I've tried to check the do not read/write radio button, but it's not even on. I'm afraid my disk is broken but I need those files really bad. Any ideas on transfering the files from the HDD?

I have been having a virtually identical problem with a 1TB Toshiba disk - I have wasted days on it and tried at least 10 Windows 7 installs with varying behaviours/parameters/partitions and always the same end result. Can't run Windows Update.
I also tried installing Windows 7 SP1 from a DVD and that failed with a catastrophic error. I have also tried reformatting the drive, the WIndows Update repair tool (ha!) and installing while standing on my head reciting the works of Shakespear.
I gave up in the end and decided NOT to use it as a system disk at all. Instead I have installed Windows 7 on a smaller drive and am using the 1TB successfully as a secondary disk on the same PC and with a single 1TB partition.
Am I likely to experience problems - perhaps when the drive gets fuller and might I be wise to split it into 2 or more partitions?
I've only just bought the disk so I can send it back if it's going to be a waste of time.

I guess you should check what problem you have with the desktop computer because the OS installation should work on any of the HDDs maybe your desktop requires a kind of RAID or SATA drivers but you should check this with your desktop PC

I have elements 12 installed on my notebook computer and it's working fine. I am about to attend a workshop on elements this sunday and am wondering if I can run it without an internet connection? I can get an internet for my notebook via my mobile phone if necessary but will need to get a data package upgrade to do so.

As far as i know, once photoshop elements 12 has been activated, it never needs the internet again, except to deactivate.
(there are a few things to download, such as the extra stuff for the Effects panel that require an internet connection, but that is optional)

Can I run a presentation without the presenter display?

Here's the setup: Mac Mini in the office attached to a 32" Sony Bravia on the wall outside the office and a 19" LCD locally. I'd like to run a slideshow out on the Bravia, but maintain my desktop inside. I can disable the 'Use alternate display to view presenter information' from within Preferences, but that blanks out my local screen while running the slideshow on the HDTV. I want to be able to run the presentation within Keynote, but keep the ability to work on other things on the desktop. Anybody done this?
PS, i know I can export the slideshow as a QT video and drag it to the second display and loop it, but I'd like to be able to change slides on the fly without rendering a whole new movie to play on the second screen. Thanks for any input!

Under Keynote preferences, there is an option for "Present on Primary Display", or "Display on Secondary Display". Does this not work when you choose secondary display and nave it leave your primary display as your Finder window? Just curious, since I don't have two displays to try it.

thanks this works well with the power adapter pluged into the mac, but I am looking for this exact setup without the need for the power to be supplied to the mac.
in otherwords, run it off the battery only.
I want to think that there is either a preferences setting, or function to be able to do this.
currently it appears that the mac will only run in the configuration with external perpherials with the power supply.
