Can I run just windows on a second hard drive in my MBP?

I'm looking to run windows apps but dont want to put windows on the same hard drive as the mac os.

Read the Bootcamp Installation instructions. http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Windows must be run on the main internal drive. Windows will not boot from an external drive.

can i put windows on a second hard drive that is partitioned with out boot.camp deleting the second partition and making one bootcamp windows partition?
i want one partition to be OS extended journaled and one partition for windows. Or do I have to create the bootcamp partition on my main drive? . my main drive is a solid-state drive which I run OS X and it's not as big as my mechanical drive. I would like to put windows on my mechanical drive but still save a lot of the drive for my mac data. So I would like to have that drive partitioned with OS extended journaled. Whenever I run boot camp and choose that hard drive boot camp will only allow me to erase the whole hard drive and make one partition for Windows. Maybe if I put OS X also on the mechanical drive and then try? Would that work. Thank you for any information you might have. Robert

Yes! why not.Just make sure after you install windows, linux, freebsd or any other os set to use mbr if there is a gpt partition first ALWAYS gptsync.

  • Installing windows 7 on second hard drive in macbook pro 7

Dear fellow forumers. I am currently having trouble installing windows 7 on my second hard disk as whenever I restart my laptop after the bootcamp assistant has made a partition in the HDD, instead of going into windows installation, my laptop screen shows a blank/black screen with a blinking dash at the top corner. I am currently using a 15" macbook pro 2011, installed an OWC ssd as my primary hard drive where I run my os Lion and windows (in another partition). Due to insufficient disk space with the applications in both OS, i am now attempting to install a second windows 7 in a second hard drive which I split the HDD equally into two partitions (one formatted for windows installation and the other for data storage). Just for the information, I am also installing the windows 7 via an external optical drive.
I have been running out of wits as I have been researching whole night about possible oslution but it seems that my problem is quite a peculiar one. Will really appreciat any help that I could receive.
lastly, is it possible to run parallel desktop from my ssd (Primary hard drive) and then attempt to import the bootcamp from my second hard drive?

Well it's not particularly hard, I just don't see why its necessary. It seems silly that I've got to physically start removing hardware from my computer just to get an OS to install on a specific drive.
I was under the impression the Boot Camp gave the option of where to install Windows, as in other drives from the ones with OSX on them.

  • Can I move just music to an external hard drive?

I'm trying to set up our home network so that everyone can access our large music library through a hard drive attached to apple extreme, but manage all of their other iTunes media files (apps, podcasts, etc) on their own devices. Is it possible for iTunes to have this type of split personality?

Um, it could be set up, but not easily, and might be fragile to somebody doing the wrong thing.

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

  • Installing Windows XP on second hard drive

I just went through and installed a second 500GB internal hard drive. I started bootcamp manager, checked the option of using the entire second drive as my windows "partition" or whatever. It started installing fine. i went throught the whole set up part where the screen is all blue and not really a gui. then once it went through 100% of the initial phase it had me reboot. and started to do the second stage of installation, and after a minute or two gave me the blue screen of death with some unknown error. what do i do?

I tried slipstreaming with nLite (nliteos.com) and the first time it failed. another missing driver or something. if someone could upload a zipped slipstreamed version somewhere that i can download and use my own serial with?
otherwise im trying a second time, but im not really doing anything differently, so i have no idea if it will work.
my cd is for sure Windows XP Professional with SP1. i havent tried removing any hard drives or anything, im kind of scared to do that with out specific working instructions...

  • Can I run another operation system via external hard drive?!

i have a macbook pro retina display and i want to run another os system but on an external drive is it possible!?

The two are actually solvable as one which is why I suggested this, but it is your question and you can continue working on both if you so choose.
If you get an external hard drive or storage, you attach that to the MBPr and then use Disk Utility, found in Finder > Applications > Utilities, to partition and format the external hard drive.  To do that:
Attach the external drive, then open Disk Utility.
In the left side panel of Disk Utility, select the external drive you have attached, make sure you are selecting the external and not the internal.
In the right or main window of Disk Utility, select Partition from the buttons at the top center of the window.
Select the number of partitions you want on the external drive, and you can set their sizes.  Then click so as to highlight them one at a time.
Give the highlightes partition a name, then select the format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Select the partition table to be GUID
Then Apply and the partition will be formatted to be compatible with Mac OS X.
When your are finished just Quit Disk Utility.
You now have a Mac OS X formatted external drive that you can use as storage for the software and data that you want to use.  You do not need to boot from that storage, boot normally but direct your applications to use the external drive as the storage location.
if you DO want to make that drive a bootable drive, we can discuss that next.

  • Problems installing second hard drive in HP Pavilion M7-1015dx laptop.

I just bought a new HP Pavilion M7-1015dx. I have successfully installed an SSD drive as the primary hard drive and now I want to use the 1tb hard drive that the computer came with as data and install it in the second hard drive bay. I have a cable that I used from my old HP DV7 when I had a second hard drive but I am having issues with my M7-1015dx laptop.
When I plug the sata cable into the second connector on the laptop and attach my hard drive (I have tried several hard drives) and go to power the laptop on, the power light just blinks a few times. Now I know there is something wrong for I just purchased the laptop two days ago... I got the idea to try the cable that I used to plug into the second connect to check and see if I plugged it into the first and I got the same issue, power light blinking. So I am wondering if it is the cable... is this possible? Are there different rated sata cables? I also tried the cable the came with my new laptop to make sure that it just wasn't the second port - I tried plugging it in to the second port with a hard drive attached and the laptop this time turned on but asked for a bootable disk because it requires boot disk to be in the 1st hard drive bay connection which I knew. I just want to give all the information so that I can get this fixed.
    Please help me

    Hey Brother-Brad,
I'm sorry you're running into issues installing a second hard drive. Your issue may not be the cable. Do you have a working hard drive installed currently with Window on it?
    If so,
    1. In Windows, Click the Start button.
    2. Type 'hard disk'
    3. Click on 'Create and format hard disk partitions' (aka Disk Management)
    4. Look at Disk 0 listed at the bottom in the middle. Does it say Basic or Dynamic?
    5. If it says Basic, right-click it and select Convert to Dynamic.
Hard drives must be set as Dynamic for dual hard drives to be recognized.
Let me know the results when you get a chance

  • Can I install a program on an External Hard Drive?

I have an 500 GB external hard drive that I attach to my MBP to store movies and my aperture picture libraries. When I first got it, I created three Mac OS Extended (journaled) partitions, one for movies, one for pictures and the other one for “extras”. I’d like to install Adobe Photoshop on my external hard drive, so I’d like to know if there is a way to make any one of my three partitions operate as if they were a system partition. Can I install an application in an external hard drive? Can I run an application from an external hard drive? Which formatting solution could help me achieve what I want? Is this even possible? Any suggestions?

There are many applications that are happy to be installed on a partition other than the boot partition. However, if the Adobe Photoshop installer does no present you with that option I wouldn't. You could always copy it across post-installation to see if it will work. Updating my present issues.

  • I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

  • How can i run a windows based program on mac book pro

Can I run a windows based program on mac book pro mountain lion 10.8.4

You can use bootcamp to install windows natively on the hard drive.  You then choose which OS you wish to use at startup - OS X or Windows.
You can also install Windows in a virtual machine - Parallels or VMWare Fusion - and run it simultaneously with OS X (a virtual machine is just a PC emulated in software, and you install and run windows in the emulated machine hardware).
