Can I run xinit automatically on login?

The question's in the topic: Can I run xinit automatically on login by a normal user?  Running xinit automatically starts Xfce, but I want to know if there's a way for that to happen automatically when I log in with a specific user (I've made a user specifically for Xfce only so I want that to run every time).  Thanks!

How about the solution from the Wiki?

  • Can you run something automatically at startup?

I'm not sure if this is for the general public or a developer to answer but my question is:
Is it possible to have something (ie. a video or application) automatically run when you startup the ipod touch?
What I would like to try and do is give out ipod touches to clients but would like to show a promo video when it is turned on. A little like demo mode I guess. Then the client has the option to either turn that function off / disable the startup video and just use it like a regular ipod touch.
    Thanks.

Normally, you slide to unlock your Touch - there's no way around that. But if you install an App like Fluid, it appears automatically once you slide your Touch open (if you want that to happen).
However, you probably realize that it's pretty easy to get a USB cable to reset the Touch so that you don't have to see the promo anymore.

  • Hi, I got the problem with Firefox 27.0.1. I can not run Selenium on Firefox after login a website for automation testing. The browser is not responding.

Hi, I got the problem with Firefox 27.0.1. I can not run Selenium on Firefox after login a website for automation testing. The browser is not responding. However when I close Nunit, the page is back to be normal. The title is returned to the name of website without "not responding". I sure this problem did not happen on Firefox version 26. I just got this problem when firefox upgrading automatically to version 27. Please help me fix this problem because it is very important for my work. If you need more information pls send your concerns via my email address.
    Thanks so much

Hi, the work around suggested above should put you in working mode in the meantime. However to help investigate the issue it is possible to analyze what is not loading or taking a long time by analyzing the network traffic or http headers of the Nunit web page.

If you post the results with out the user data, we are happy to help.

  • Can't stop applications from opening automatically at login

A few months ago I tried the "open at login" feature for 4 of the applications in my dock. I have decided it is more of a hassle than it's worth and unchecked "open at login." That didn't stop them from opening automatically. I went into Accounts and made sure the "Login Items" tab was empty. That also didn't work. I even added the programs into the tab, restarted and deleted them. I searched the Apple website and read that you can bypass applications launching automatically by holding shift at the blue screen on startup and then again after typing the password. I set the computer to not login automatically and hold shift every time I start the computer up. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem and what they did about it. Is there a way to stop them from opening without having to log in every time? Thank you.

go to the directory homedirectory/library/preferences and delete the files loginwindow.plist and com.apple.loginitems.plist. Then log out/in normally. nothing should start up by itself.

  • Can't run login.jsp correctly

After finishing configuration procedure, I tried to test if it works. I can run test.jsp ok, but I can't run login.jsp correctly.
    I got the message:
    JSP Error:
    Request URI:/papz/login.jsp
    Exception:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: oracle/panama/model/User
How can I correct the error?

Another discrepancy I noticed...pg. 11 of the PTG installation guide specifies you add classpath to file classes111.zip in <PTG_HOME>/panama/lib subdir. I have classes12.zip in that dir.
    Would that make a difference?

  • Can I interrupt an automatic update to iPhoto? If so, how? And how can I stop automatic updates? This current update has been running for over 4 hours now. I have a MacBook Pro w/OSX 10.9.1

Can I interrupt an automatic update to iPhoto? Also, how can I turn OFF  automatic updates?

as Larry said, just a caution about the App Store Preferences:
If you do not want your software to update automatically, disable "Install app updates".  But better not disable the option "Install system data files and security updates".  If there are security updates available, it is important to get them installed asap.

  • Getting Error :- Only one instance of COBRAS Export can be running at a time

    Hi All,
I was checking the Briefcase Mode help file and it mentions for Unity Conection
that COBRAS will run multiple instances of itself – if you schedule multiple backups to fire up at the same time they will all run at the same time.
However if I schedule multiple backups to fire at the same time then I get the error :- "Only one instance of COBRAS Export can be running at a time".
This also happens if the COBRAS windows is left open and the scheduled backup starts in the background.
    http://www.ciscounitytools.com/Applications/General/COBRAS/Help/COBRAS_Briefcase/COBRAS_Briefcase.htm#_Toc276653845
I am not sure if I am making a mistake in understanding the statement :- "COBRAS will run multiple instances of itself – if you schedule multiple backups to fire up at the same time" or do we need to add any switch like lot of other application need like /m etc in the field of the scheduled backups as I see as /silent switch for process to run in background automatically but none for multiple instances.
I am attaching the screen shots of the errors I got when
A.) I scheduled 2 backups to run at the same time and the COBRAS application window was open "COBRASExportCUC7.exe" was running  and no backup took place and got errors for both the scheduled backups.
    And
B.) I scheduled 2 backups to run at the same time and the COBRAS application window was closed off and "COBRASExportCUC7.exe" was not running and one of the scheduled backups started to work and the other one gave error and didn't work
Unity Connection in use :- Version 8.0.3.20000-18
    Cobras Export :- Version 1.0 Build 76
    Please Suggest.
    Regards,
    Prad
    (E-Mail :- [email protected])

Yeah, I’m of two minds on that – on the one hand it’s bad style to have a scheduled application popping dialog boxes (especially if you’re running as an account you don’t log in as regularly) – one the other hand I did have some sites go a while not noticing backups were failing (due to a UNC not flying any longer after a server reconfig) – folks can be bad about checking log files or the event log for issues.  A pop up would pretty much guarantee they’d notice on next login at any rate.
I think I may stitch in email notifications in COBRAS Export in the same way they’re in the User Data Dump so failures of scheduled backups would be noticed right away (big, bright email in your box saying “failed!” would do it).
Either way, I’ll update the help and make sure it fails quietly for now when I update some other items on the site middle of next week.
    Thanks for the report.

  • Can't run secondary X server, no screens found

I have been without using separate X server for a while, now I need them and it seems that something changed with Xorg 1.16
I used to run them with
    xinit 'appname' -- : 1 vt$XDG_VTNR
Now there was a permission error (only console users could run X server), I fixed it with allowed_users = anybody on /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config
But now I got no screens found error, xorg.conf is fine (because my DE works fine)

I have noticed that after running xinit foo --: 1 vt$XDG_VTNR I can't use tty anymore, they won't open.
Some black dots appear on screen too, and I can see some dashes blinking around screen. Now while typing this post I can see one dash blinking on this text box.
    Rebooting fixes this.

My MacBook Pro won't go beyond a white screen, after I pushed the restart button. How can I get it to a login? I have routinely backed it up, but don't know how to bring that up, nor if I have a boot file on that external disk. Help!

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

    1. Make a backup of the extproc.c file in the c:\orant\rdbms80\extproc
    directory.
    2. Create a file called extern.c in the c:\orant\rdbms80\extproc directory.
    The "extern.c" file :

  • VPN to connect automatically on login (using OSX client) ? ? ? ?

is there a way to make my VPN connection to connect automatically on login ?
    (so its connects on startup)
im using Apple built in VPN client. . . .

An application that is in the login items will bounce in the dock so how would expect a user not to know it is running.
As you can start n stop a vpn service via the command line you could configure a launchd process to start a script.
To easily create launchd processes you can use lingon
This hint Accessing a VPN (PPTP) via the command line could be used to write a bash shell script.
Or you could install a 3rd party command line vpn client see this hint Install vpnc as a replacement for the Cisco VPN client
This would be done in the background.

I still hanker after all the benefits of OS9 with which I was very happy for so many years. Can I run it on my new machine? Tiger is very pretty in many ways but I don't find it always very intuitive and Word doesn't work as well as it did before.

    Hi Garland,
It is about the programs you use.
If you use old Classic programs, it opens Classic automatically.
Then you are in the Classic environment, everything looks and works like in Mac OS 9.
As long as you use only Classic applications, you'll remain in this environment.
Mac OS X is the one who is actually at work in the background, but if you don't use Mac OS X applications you don't see it.
You cannot boot from Mac OS 9, but you can have Classic "start when you login" (System Preferences).
If your Classic is not installed:
Install it from your computer's install DVD or CD.
Open Help (⌘?) and type "classic support".
You can type also "classic", to get a lot more useful articles.

I spilled water on my laptop and my "i", "j" and "k" letters don't work on my laptop. However my main problem is that my password contains an "i" so i am locked out of my computer. Any ideas how I can get around the password and login. I tried the method where you go into single user mode and type in commands, however that method uses some of the letters that are not working on my laptop.

You didn't mention which version of OS X your running but there are password reset utilities provided OS X: Changing or resetting an account password (Snow Leopard and earlier) - Apple Support  or  OS X: Changing or resetting an account password - Apple Support
Alternately you can use an external keyboard to log in and change the password. Make a backup if you don't have one, it's likely that your problems aren't over. If that water continues to migrate downward and fries the logic board your macbook will be toast.

  • Can't run a 10.7.4 VMWare VM on MBP with Retina

I have an old 13" Aluminum Macbook and a purchased copy of Lion that I created a VMWare OSX 10.7.4 VM with that I could use for work.  I had it running fine on my 13" that runs 10.7.4.  I just got a new MBP writh Retina display.  It came with 10.7.4 pre-installed.  I loaded VMWare, moved my VM over and tried to start it up.  I got the login screen, but right after login, I get an error "The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. Power off or reset the virtual machine."
I submitted a VMWare ticket and they said this is caused by a mismatch between the OSX10.7.4 builds on the two machines, and that the one on my old macbook is unaware of the ivy bridge architecture on the new Macbook.  They said this doesn't normally occur because Apple generally releases one build for all macbooks.  As a point of reference, the build on my Retina is 11E2620, while on my 13" it is 11E53.
VMWare said that it should be cleared up once 10.7.5 is released.  They had also heard from other clients that they had been successful in talking with Apple and getting a patch for the older Mac that would make it aware of ivy bridge.  So I believe I would apply the patch to both the host and guest on the 13" (although I didn't get into that level of detail with the resource).
Anyway, I got Applecare with my retina so I submitted an Apple support ticket and talked to someone at Apple.  They checked with their supervisor and basically said they didn't know anything about a patch and if there was one, I would have to get it from VMWare.  They did agree that this should be clared up with 10.7.5 but again, pointed it back to VMWare.
So now I have Apple and VMWare pointing fingers at each other, I still have a non-working VM for my new machine (I can still run it on my old machine thankfully) and too much time has been spent on that VM to completely recreate it on the new Macbook.  Anyway, not having the VM on my Retina really cuts down the amount I can use it.  So if anyone has any more details on how to get this supposed patch, OR if anyone has any detail on when 10.7.5 is likely to be released, please let me know.  Thanks,
    -David

I can't answer the specific error message, but I can tell you a better way to do what you're asking.
    on pathToScripts()
tell application "Finder" to set parentFolder to (path to me) as text
set scriptsFolder to parentFolder & "Contents:Resources:Scripts:"
        return scriptsFolder
    end pathToScripts
There's no need to use the Finder here at all. 'path to me' is a standard command that doesn't require Finder input.
Secondly, if you're looking for a resource in the application's bundle then you should use 'path to resource' rather than 'path to me' + some hard-coded string.
As a result your first three lines of script could be reduced to:
set CloseBrowsersScriptPOSIXFile to path to resource "closeBrowsers.scpt" in directory "Scripts"
    set theResult to run script file CloseBrowsersScriptPOSIXFile with parameters {"uninstaller"}
