Can I safely delete old versions???

In add/remove programs I have 3 versions of Java:
J2SeRuntime Environment 5.0 update 4 144.00MB
Java2Runtime Environment Std Edition v1.3.1 22.15MB
Java2Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_07 130.00MB
I sure would like to get rid of some of these huge files if they're not needed, but no where does it say that we can delete previous versions when we upgrade to a new one.
Can someone please help? I don't want to delete something that contains files that are needed to run the current version, etc.

Can I safely delete old Time Machine back ups?

It makes no sense to delete old backups. Time Machine automatically deletes backups if it needs space. If you start deleting backups, you will do it ONE at a time.
Why does Time Machine keep so many back ups in the first place?
It is designed that way.

No.
Why are you having a problem with the design of Time Machine? Do you need, for some reason, extra space on the external drive? If that is the case, you should have partitioned the external.

Can I safely delete old libraries?

I notice that I have a LOT of old Libraries, e.g. ITUNES Library 2005-9-12, etc. The older ones run from 3,000k+ to the newest at about 8,700k.
Are these just old backups? Can I get rid of the earlier ones to free up disk space (I assume I'd keep the latest one).
I don't know what these are and just want to make sure I know what I'm deleting!

You could always move them from where they are to the desktop, and then launch iTunes.
If everything seems ok then they aren't needed.
Or is that too simple? No, it's a Mac

I am using SQLDeveloper in Linux OS.
When I open the .sqldeveloper directory, I see the following directories: 1) system1.5.5.59.69 2) system2.1.1.64.39 3) system2.1.1.64.45. Can we safely delete the older versions?

Update: 11g also comes with its own SQLDEVELOPER. Is it possible to uninstall/delete the sqldeveloper under $ORACLE_HOME? I am facing disk space issues.

Can deleting old versions of Ipod for Windows in Add/Remove programs safely free up disk space without harming the library? I need to make space on my hard drive! Any info would help. Thanks!

If you have itunes 7, you can delete/remove all of them. If you want to be on the safe side, remove all but the most current one (aka 2006-06-28)

Which files can I safely delete in my Pictures Folder/ iPhoto Library

Thanks in advance for any advice on the following. I am trying to free up some space on my Macbook Pro hard drive. In the Pictures/ iPhoto Library folder, I seem to have a lot of duplicates. At this folder level, I have series of sub folders with years 2002-2006 listed, and there is also a folder titled data, which also has subfolders 2002-2006. Can I safely delete one set of folders without losing my pictures?

In a word, NONE. Those are all necessary item for the operation of the library. Those files in the Originals folder are obviously the originals. Those in the Data folder are the thumbnails iPhoto uses to display in the main library window. The Modified files are those that you've editied, rotated, etc. To do any moving, renaming or editing of files directly from the folder is tantamount to committing the cardinal sin of iPhoto: Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder.
What with the low cost of external FW HDs, they are a very cost effective way to protect and preserve important files. As you may know it's recommended to have a minimum of 10G free space for optimum performance of the system and applications. More if possible. You can use Monolingual to remove any language module you don't need (be sure not to select English or American English and DO NOT run any of the Architecture items). I saved nearly 900MB the first time I ran it.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. Look at these forums- literally thousands of posts complaining about the new version.
Use the new one to open only documents you know you have backed up becuase it can destroy formatting. Play around with it and see if it suits your needs before ditching the old, working versions.

Deleting backups of your iPhone 4s will not affect anything on your iPhone 6. See this article on managing iCloud backups -

I had a lot of trouble getting PS 5.1 working on my computer because of license issues and have been afraid to delete older versions of PS thinking it might hose things again.

If you really are not desperate for HD space the best advice is to leave them as is. They should not affect one another as they are.
Deleting old versions can cause file associaton and other file access problems.

heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident.

This is standard for Apple. While there is little official mention of the software support lifespan for equipment, typical support has been about 4-5 years for computers. It strikes me that newer items, especially mobile devices, are not built as sturdily nor do they have the hardware upgrade capabilities required to keep up with newer systems. When we bought an iPhone 4S we were told by the person in the store we'd probably be looking at a newer model in two years. The iPhone 3G could be anywhere from 2 to 4 years old, putting it well into.
As for app availability, Apple typically pulls old software versions from its site when new versions appear. If it is a non-Apple app then I guess it is up to the vendor. It is indeed tiresome but it is not at all unusual. Since I only ever run used Macs, I download current versions even though my computer won't run them, stick them on a hard drive, then I have them when I upgrade to a newer used computer. If you run older equipment you have to learn a different mode of operation to exist with the Apple 'new and innovative' but 'forget about the old' philosophy.
