Can I safely remove items in /Library/Receipts/ ?

What are the drawbacks and ramifications of removing packages in the /Library/receipts/ folder?
Thank you in advance.
Jeff Cameron

Hi Jeff:
The receipts in your Library tells Software Update what software is installed on your computer. When Software Update is launched it scans the receipts and determines whether you need to update. I believe this is also true for some third party apps. Since the receipt files take up only a very little disk space it is no real advantage to remove them, and may prove a disadvantage. For software that you have deleted from your computer, you may safely delete those if there are any. For more information see Receipts can affect what appears in Software Update (Mac OS X)

  • What can I safely remove from main Library

    Hi there,
My MacBook Pro has a SSD drive which is almost full.
I use it for music (Logic Pro) images (Aperture) and movies (FCP)
I want to know what items I can safely delete from the main Libraries to free up disc space
    Thanks
    Sam

    I'm going to say "Nothing".
OS X standard install in total is around 10GB. In addition to that, all the Logic samples and loops, which I guess you want to keep, are going to be a good few gigs.
    After that, it's your documents.

  • User has a "startup on login" pref that opens a file named "apple-scc-20111227-074257".  Can't find any reference to this....any idea on what this startup file does or if it can be safely removed as a login-startup item?  thanks.

Friend has a laptop running OSX 10.6.8, with latest software update 22Jun2012.  One of the User's items to startup on Login is a file titled "
    apple-scc-20111227-074257"
No idea what this does or where it is located.....any ideas on what it starts up and if it can be safely removed from startup items?  Thanks for any info.

If you mouse over the item in your Login Items you should see a tool tip indicating where it is.  Alternatively right (control) click on it and a contextual menu item, Reveal in Finder will be shown which you can select to open the folder containing the item.
By the way the 20111227 portion of that name looks like a date -- 12/27/2011.
I'm  sure you can delete it.  Nothing major is going to happen.  But you really should find out where it is.
If Reveal in Finder doesn't show anything it may be because the file is invisible (which might be considered somewhat suspicious).  In that case use the finder find command (command-f) and look for kind filename plus invisible.  Or just use Find any File to find it.

  • How can i "Safely Remove" My Passport Ultra from my PC?

I can't EVER "Safely Remove" my My Passport Ultra drive from my PC!
The computer's an HP notebook (if that matters), and it's running Vista (64bit).
I can't believe that there's NO way to eject / unmount / "Safely Remove" the drive from my computer when i need to disconnect it from the port!
But i can't find any way to do it, other than shutting down the system entirely. Obviously, shutting down every time i want to unplug the drive is so RIDICULOUSLY impractical, i can't even consider it as an option.
The "Knowledge Base" pages don't seem particularly knowledgeable on the subject.
The only suggestions offereed there are to close any applications that are acccessing thedrive, including the Windows indexer and any virus/spyware programs that might be running.
Obviously I've already done that. I've set the drive to never be idexed or scanned/monitored for viruses and spyware.
And yet still, every time i try to eject the drive, it's the same message:
"Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device"
"Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later."
Sometimes, even after i manually end the WD software via the Windows services menu, they just start back up again a few seconds later (even though i set them in the services menu to only be launched manually).
But the rest of the time, even when none of the WD software is running, Windows still tells me the drive is in use and won't let me eject it.
There's GOTTA be a way around this.
I've never had this problem with any OTHER external drive.
I'm still waiting for a reply to the Support Case i submited yesterday, but i'm getting impatient.
Does anybody else know any solutions to this problem? I can't be the only one stumped by it...

    Update:
I think I finally solved the problem (no thanks to WD...).
I had already excluded the My Passport Drive from being indexed by the Windows Indexer.
And from being scanned or protected by antivirus software.
And from being monitored by Windows Defender.
What i didn't realize is that the WD Smartware software and the other WD applications were running automatically at startup, whether or not the drive was connected.
And so even if i closed them manually, they relaunched automatically in the background again.
Finally, i used a third-party program to remove all the WD applications and services from the startup and autorun lists on my computer.
This seems to be working so far.
I've been able to connect the drive, manually run the WD Smartware application, perform a backup, and close WD Smartware again. And then Windows allows me to "Safely Remove" (eject) the drive without any problems. I've gotta say that it makes no sense for WD's software to be ser up to run automatically, but that's the way it was set up by default when i installed it. Maybe it would make sense if WD expected its users to leave it connected and running all the time, but this is a PORTABLE drive. Leave it connected and constantly running in the background would defeat the purpose of being "portable" entirely, wouldn't it?

  • Windows 7 doesn't release USB stick - can't safely remove USB stick

Sometimes when I'm trying to safely remove an USB stick formatted with NTFS from any Windows 7 installation, Windows 7 refuses to release the USB device.
This occurs on host machines as well as on VM guest machines. When I'm attaching the USB stick to a virtual machine (VMware Workstation) and when this effect occurs in there I can see from Workstation's device manager that the USB stick is getting accessed
once every (approx.) five seconds. The USB stick shortly flashes up accordingly then, so there is indeed some access to the USB stick.
Now, this doesn't happen all the time. This effect only occurs, say once or twice a week.
Waiting for 5 to 10 Minutes, the low-frequent regular short flashing finally stops and I can safely remove my USB stick then.
Well, what I want to know: Which Windows service is sometimes accessing my USB stick in this manner?
This happens on several machines, some of them having almost no software installed.
When exploring the file handles with SysInternals Process Explorer, there's only a Windows Explorer handle attached to the USB device.
I suspect it might either be Windows Defender (having Search Removable Devices enabled), Windows Search or Windows Defragment. But this is only a guess.
Can anyone please enlighten me on which service is capturing my USB device for such a long time, keeping me from safely removing the USB device?

Have had Windows 8 …  went back to Windows 7.

    Hi,
We can use USB parser in WDK8 or 8.1.
    To install USB ETW parsers:
1.Determine whether you have 32-bit Windows or 64-bit Windows: ◦Open the Start Menu.
◦Right click Computer and select Properties.
◦Look at the System type field. (Note: 32-bit corresponds to “x86” for the downloads).
    2.Install Netmon:
◦Go to the bottom of the Quick details on the Netmon 3.4 download page and press the Download button for your system type.
◦Download and run the exe. When it asks about setup type, Typical is fine.
3.Download and install the Windows Driver Kit for Windows 8.
    4.Allow execution of PowerShell scripts:
◦Open the Start screen, type "powershell", right click on the Windows PowerShell result, and select Run as administrator.
◦Type or paste the following command:
    Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Force
    4.Close the PowerShell window
5.Open a PowerShell window (you don't need to Run as administrator) and run the following commands. Adjust the path if you installed the kit to a different location:
    cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Tools\x86\Network Monitor Parsers\usb"
    ..\NplAutoProfile.ps1
Now you're set up! You can now launch Netmon and open an .etl trace by selecting File -> Open -> Capture.
You can also use OneDrive to upload the trace file in forum so that we can help you analyze your problem.

  • Deleting *certain* items from Library/Receipts?

I know a lot of people say never to delete anything from the folder Library/Receipts, but how about:
    printer brands you don't own/use
    applications you've deleted
    also:
I have about ten receipts for NeoOffice updates--would it be ok to delete all but the last?
    and
a system package for 10.3.9--i know normally not to touch apple system stuff but if you've been using tiger from day one practically and plan to upgrade to leopard soon is it ok to throw out a panther-related receipt?
    tia
P.S. i know i need to delete other things (movies basically) because i'm down to a couple gigs of free space on my HD

I may then--in part just to see in fact how much has been going on under my nose so to speak.
Btw it was my bad in saying the printer .pkg files were over 100MB--I was also throwing stuff out of my Printers folder. .pkg files seem to always be around 300K.
FYI I asked about deleting the Neooffice update receipts at the NeoOffice forum and I already got a response from their board administrator--they said they don't use them so it's ok to throw out even the most recent one.
Also how about QuickTime receipts? (again, except for the most recent one). I've got at least six or seven of those. If you're not sure I would err on the side of keeping them, just because they're Apple system software.

  • How can I safely migrate my photo library from Photos 1.0 back to iPhoto 9.6.1?

When I updated to the 10.10.3 update, it removed iPhoto from my dock, replacing it with the new Photos icon.  I assumed wrongly that I could no longer use iPhoto & allowed Photos to migrate my photo library to itself. My photo library is huge, over 25K photos, and I've since realized I'd prefer if I'd kept the library in iPhoto, starting a new library with the Photos app, but I don't know how to put things back safely. Any suggestions?

Thank you. The original warning message about launching iPhoto had put me off, the language suggesting any iPhoto edits not being viewable in Photos a little concerning, but now I understand better.
Also, the Create New Library shortcut very helpful, so thanks again.

  • Can I safely move my iTunes library to an external hard drive, to free up memory?

As an elementary music teacher, I have more than 10,000 songs in my iTunes library.
I also have a lot of video footage of my students' performances.
I need to free up memory and am wondering if there is a safe way to move the iTunes library to an external hard drive, and, if it is safe, how difficult will it be for me to access it from the external hard drive.
On my school computer, one of the "techies" moved that iTunes library to an external drive and ended up quadrupling the size of it, so want to be sure that if this makes sense, that I do it the right way!!!
    Thanks so much!

Can I move those songs to an external hard drive?
    yes.
Will that improve the speed of my computer?
maybe. what is the total capacity of your boot drive and how much free space is left ?

  • Can't delete/remove items listed as not available in shopping cart

i have 2 songs in my itunes shopping cart which are listed as "not available" (under an album title, i assume, because both songs are contained under an arrow). i tried clicking on the "x" button to remove, as well as trying to highlight and delete. neither worked. the songs are stuck in my shopping cart. now, instead of purchasing songs in a group as i normally do, i have to download each of the songs that are available separately.
how do i remove this item (which contains two songs), from my shopping cart?
has anyone else had this problem?
    thanks,
    twon

Figured this out on my own.

  • What can I safely remove?

    Yogo 13" - 4gb 128 ss drive version.
I don't feel comfortable in my knowledge to do a complete wipe and renistall... So what can I do to get some of this crap off here... The apps, the extra bloatware...??
Also the mcafee - can't I just use windows defender to do the same thing and get mcafee off?

    hi Jmgilliam,
Check this article as it contains information on how to free up some space on your Yoga 13. You can also uninstall the softwares that you don't need by going to Control Panel > Programs (check this pdf data sheet for the preloaded softwares). As for the mcafee, you can remove it also via the Control Panel or download and run Mcafee Removal Tool.
In addition, check this thread on how to free up more space on your Lenovo Yoga 13.
    Note:
Please create a recovery drive before modifying anything on the system.
    Hope this helps

  • In attempting to install recommended software updates I get a message saying my startup disc is full.  I have an Intel-based desktop with 1GB memory.  What can I safely remove?

In attempting to install recommended software updates I get a message that my startup disc is full.  I have an iMac (intel-based) with 1GB memory.  I suspect my iTunes library is using up much of the space (I have no movies installed and have already copied most of my photos to a DVD to free up space).  If I follow the instructions to move my iTunes library to an external HD (can I use a flash drive?) will I have enough working memory to plug it back in for use when I want to access the library?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Moving libraries off the boot disk while doable is not very viable.  It creates many new problems in backing up your data, as now you have more than one source to backup.    See my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
My suggestion is to get at least two copies of all your essential data in one manner or another, and get a larger boot hard drive to replace what you currently use to be able to consolidate your libraries.
As for cleaning space, see my FAQ*:

  • Which archivelog files can be safely removed from OS

    Hi,
I didn't used "delete input" option when backup the archivelog files. So all archivelog files still remain on the file system. How can I identily which archivelog files I can delete using the command
    "RMAN>change archivelog '/u04/arch/arch_xxx.arc' delete; "
where xxx is the seq I need to make sure it's safe to be removed.
I need to make sure "restore archivelog all validate" command will still report successful afterward. The total size of archivelog files is over 20GB and I'm running out of space now. Thanks.

The only way to delete your archlog is do not do a cross check archivelog all. Bec that will invalidate your archlogs. We have a rentetion of 28 days and we dlete archlogs after everybackup using delete input. While doing cross check we use "cross check completed before 'xxx'" and then it still keeps active in repo.

  • Can I safely delete my iPhoto library?

As the subject says, is it safe to delete my 1.69gb iPhoto library file? I have all my pictures in various folders elsewhere. So my question is, if I delete this, it won't delete any of my pictures in those other folders.
I assume that an iPhoto library file is basically imported pictures copied into a self-contained file.

Deleting the iPhoto Library will delete just that, and not affect files in other locations.

  • I am getting a message that my startup disk is full, what files can be safely removed to open up space or can I use an external HD for my startup disk?

Converted  a FCP X movie into a quicktime .mov file and tried to burn to DVD, message came up that I needed 26.8 GB to burn this movie. I am not sure how I used so much memory. I was not creating Blu-ray movie just a standard DVD. Anyone have any suggestions for what I did to creat such a large file?

It needs free unfragmented space on your boot drive.
So just what and how large and how full is it?
And it isn't 'memory' (ie, RAM), storage is never referred to as memory.
Your system is likely running something later than the 10.6.6 shown.
Clone your system to another hard drive adn then try, or clean it up after backing up with CCC
While at it, move all your home data and media folders off the boot drive (leave a mini ~/Library only)
    System
Media and data folders and libraries
    scratch
    projects
    backup partition(s)
    etc
    more efficient and runs better.
never let the system drive get to less than 30% free, even more.
