Can I save my iMessages but not have them appear in my list?

I have a list of all of my iMessage convos. I would like to have them on my phone but not have them appear in my list. (Not active convos but want to save the information and don't want to have to scroll through them). Can this be done?

You could save them to a file on your computer, using apps like PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac or Windows) then move that file back to your phone. I back up my messages as a PDF file. I could, if I wanted to, email that to myself and open it in a PDF reader app (e.g. iBooks).
There's no good way to do it on the phone itself.

In Address Book, why does Apple let you create custom fields in the Template cards but not have them available for importing?

I open Address Book, go into Preferences, select Template and under the Names field (friend, assistant, father, etc) I add a custom field called "Principal".
I also add two more custom fields in the Email area.
Quit Address Book then relaunch. Add a new contact and the new custom fields, Principal, etc. are there. All good so far.
I have a Now Contact file with about 200 contacts in it. I export all fields as a Text file, Tab delimited. No problems there. With Address Book launched, select Import, pick the text file, leave Text Encoding on Automatic and click Open.
The window that shows the fields for Address Book and fields for the text file side by side opens. This is where you match up the correct fields for importing. If I go to one of the fields from the text file that I created a custom field for, click under the Address Book heading on the Do not import, scroll thru the Apple choices of fields, none of the custom fields show up. Only the original Apple ones are there. Why does Apple let you create them in the Template area but not have them available for importing? Does anyone have suggestions on getting around this?

While most likely not of interest to you, Spotlight can also tell you where the files it finds are located
Hover the mouse pointer over the name, and press Command-Option and the path to the file will be displayed.
As for opening a terminal session in the directory where a file is located, there is Applescripts that do just that as well as specific features in Lion/Mountain Lion terminal:

How can I create a pdf but not have it open in acrobat afterwards

I want to be able to create a pdf file but not have it open up in acrobat after it is created.
I am doing this in an Access application that outputs a report to a pdf and then faxes that pdf to a fax number associated with that report. It might loop thru several hundred reports so I don't want to have close several hundred pdfs manually, plus I doubt my computer could even handle that many opened pdf files. Is there someway of configuring acrobat so that it won't open after a pdf is created?

Using VBA I open up a report and then use the following code:
DoCmd.OutputTo acOutputReport, RptName, acFormatPDF, strFile, 0
RptName is the name of the report
strFile is C:\Reports\test.pdf
It creates the pdf no problem, its just that it opens it up afterwards. I would like it to not open up the pdf in acrobat because I want to loop thru several hunderd reports and fax them to different numbers.

Can I Have Things on my Apple TV, but not have them on my itunes

I was wondering because space is a concern for me on my laptop, Could I delete things on my itunes on my lap top but still keep them on my Apple TV?
Videos, TV shows and movies take up a lot of space and I know you can do it with an ipod by manually uploading music to it on itunes and I wondered if you could do the same for the Apple TV?

I have a tip for storing large files on the Apple TV and not on your laptop, and still use iTunes to keep synced.
I keep a folder of video files on my external hard drive that I'd like to have on my Apple TV and not stored on my laptop. Lots of movies and TV shows.
1. I connect my external hard drive to my laptop that contains my video files.
2. Open iTunes, open File > Preferences > Advanced Tab
3. Un-check "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"
4. Keep checked "Keep iTunes Media folder organized", close iTunes Preferences
5. I drag a movie from my external hard drive into iTunes (this imports just the info about the movie, and not the actual file, which stays on your hard drive).
6. Go back to iTunes Preferences and re-check "Copy files...."
7. With the external hard drive connected to my laptop, I sync that movie to the Apple TV (copy it to the Apple TV), via the Apple TV sync page under the devices section in iTunes.
8. Now you can disconnect the external hard drive. The movie in iTunes will get a little ! icon, indicating that iTunes cannot find that movie file (because it's not stored on the laptop, but it's on the hard drive, therefore you cannot play the video on your laptop)
9. When using the Apple TV, your video should be available on the Apple TV because it was synced over.
Using this method will allow you to watch your videos anytime on the Apple TV (because they were copied to the Apple TV - no computer turned on), and also on your Mac via iTunes (but only when your external drive is connected to your mac).

Phone will save ringtones/pictures but not show them in the media folder.

As my subject said, my phone will save pictures and ringtones, however will not show them in the media folder, but if I got through the long way, through the "files" icon in applications all of the new ringtones and pictures are there. So any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Remove your battery followed by your media card.
Reinsert your battery first and allow the device to complete the reboot. Once done, insert your media card. You should get a pop saying media card is inserted.
Go to your Media folder and check for your photos and ringtones.

Why can I chat with a buddy but not add them to my Buddy list?

I'm using iChat 4.0.2 with OS 10.5.2.
I add a particular buddy to my list but the name fades in and out and then disappears all together in a few seconds. No matter how many times and ways I try, I cannot add them to my buddy list and get them to stay. I can add other buddies to my list normally.
During the time I can see this particular buddy's name in my buddy list, if I'm quick enough before they fade out, I can click to connect and chat perfectly. I can also request to view video with them and have them accept and view normally. However, if this buddy sends a video request to me, I hear the ring but then an instantaneous message window appears saying that the buddy "cancelled the invitation".
Interestingly, after connecting with this particular buddy, I can maintain their text chat window and text chat as normal. This buddy is using iChat 3.1.9 and OS 10.4.11.
Any help or ideas with how to keep this buddy in my list would be appreciated.

I would have gone the iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security and just checked the Block list first.
com.apple.ichat.Subnet holds the sort order and Allow/Block lists
Setting the Preference to Allow All and then checking the Allow option and possibly the Block list would change the Subnet.plist anyway.
For some the Flashing/disappearing Buddy is a result of iChat 4's response to Feedbag Error 10
Feedbag errors are AIM codes for problems with the Buddy List.
In this case it is adding a Screen name with a Real name option and that Real Name is already in the Address Book.
To restate.
I would leave the deletion of com.apple.ichat.Subnet.plist (as this will remove all those that may be in your Block list) until all other options have been exhausted.

Why can I receive iMessages but not send them?

I'm signed into Apple ID for iMessages and have both wifi and cellular data available but I can't send iMessages! I'm receiving them but can only respond by text. FaceTime is also working!

Macrumors posted a solution for this. I used it and it seems to have worked for me.
Here's what they said:
1. Turn off iMessage in Settings > Messages
2. Reset networking settings in Settings > General > Reset
3. Reenable iMessage in Settings > Messages

I can send imessages but not receive them?

Apologies if this is a stupid question.
I just got an iPhone 5 and can send imessages without any trouble, but when I receive a message it says 'Text Message' in small grey writing above the message. Does this mean that people are unable to send me imessages? I know that the people I am messaging have imessage turned on because I am able to send them imessages.

Is there a way to use iMessage but not have the texts sync to my iPad or other devices, just stay on my iPhone?

I don't like when things from my phone sync to my iPad or iPod, so I am wondering if there is a way to keep the texts on my phone and off of everything else. I share my iPad with others and don't want to be in the middle of a conversation when all of a sudden it just appears while someone else is using the iPad. In addition, I don't want the messages to syn to the computer when I plug my phone in, as I also share the computer with others. This has kept me from using iMessage because of how iCloud works, but maybe I just don't have a good understanding of how they work and someone can clear it up for me. Thanks.

Why can i only recieve iMessage but not regular text messages?

All today, my phone has not been delivering me my regular, green text messages from anyone. But my phone will deliver me my iMessages, blue texts from my friends with iPhones. A message did pop up saying that my SMS mailbox was full and that I needed to delete messages before my messages would be received, but I went through and deleted over 400 SMS messages and that usually does the trick and the undelivered messages pour in.
Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

My experience has been that the first step in figuring out SMS issues is to check with the cell provider and be sure nothing has changed with the account provisioning or with the provider. Once you've eliminated this, it's time to explore issues with the device or device OS.

Time Machine can see my old backups, but not open them

I have been using Time Machine with a Time Capsule (1TB) since last June (on this machine) - quite a few backups in there.
Last night when I went to backup, first time in a few days, it said the machine had never been backed up and started the preparing the disk thing - I couldn't find a problem, everything looked fine on my time capsule - couldn't do anything else, so I let it run. This AM it had finished the backup (in fact several) and when I open Time Machine it shows me as having backups all the way to June '08 -- however, it cannot seem to open anything earlier than last nights -- if I try to scroll to them it greys out. If I try to directly click on one, I get an empty finder window that never seems to update (at least not for 5-10 min) and then I cannot get any response from anything, have to restart to get out.
There are two things that I can think of that could have caused this -- I updated to 10.5.6 since my last backup, and I backed up a second Mac to the same time capsule in the interim (that backup went fine and seems to be working, but very slow)
My console is not reporting any errors (for backup or for anything else). It would be nice to get back to my old files, it certainly seems to know they are there. Any thoughts?

I'm having this same issue and would like to know what I might be able to do.
I started using TimeMachine so that I could wipe my internal HD and be able to restore the settings. Now that I've wiped the HD TimeMachine doesn't seem to be doing what I expected it to do or I don't know how to restore the files.
Any help would be wonderful!

Can send faxes on 6500 but not receive them.

Test says I need different phone cord. Went to Best Buy and they said that's crazy since I can send out. It used to work when I had Vonage, but now I switched to Comcast home phone and it won't work.

Hate to hear your are having that issue with your faxing. The Best Buy reps do their very best, they have 1000's of products to get to know....
if you are not using the HP supplied cord (which is a 2 wire cord) or the fax hardware test indicates your are not using the correct cord then we need get you another fax cord(2 wire fax cord...)
If the cord you are using is a 4 wire cord (you can tell by the 4 prongs on the end) then you will have fax issues... The extra 2 wires in a 4 wire cord can cause interference..
Also.... you mentioned you changed carriers..If you have a voicemail service active this will disrupt your incoming faxes... there is no work around you MUST DEACTIVATE your voice mail to receive faxes.

I can call others and send text messages but, when someone sends me a text I don't receive it and when they call it goes straigt to my voicemail. I went to the reception page where it shows the signal strength number at the top and it showed it was a good signal.

Have you spoken to your carrier ? It sounds like the phone isn't set up correctly.

Have you tried looking in settings, general, restrictions and see if the app got restricted? When it's restricted the icon vanishes.
