Can I save my playlist?

Okay, long story but a windows update has royally messed up my laptop to the point where I'm going to have to reformat to day one according to the technicians I've talked too. I've already backed up all my music to my other computer but I was wondering if there was a way to transfer or save my actual playlists so I don't have to put them all back together from scratch. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure you get a copy of the itunes database ITL file.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
It holds all your ratings, playcounts, playlists, and so on.
Remember to deauthorize your PC before you have it serviced.
When you restore the music files and put them back on your laptop, you have to put the music files back exactly where they were before so itunes can find the folder/directory paths.
Then re-authorize your laptop.
If you just want the playlists on the other PC, try This. Highlight a playlist, then use file > export and choose to save it as an XML file, not a txt file. Move the XML file over to your other PC. If the path names are the same on the other PC you can import the XML file.

reinstalling the iTunes app will not do anything to your playlists, media files, ratings, etc.

that said, it is imperative that you have a backup of your precious media files. bookmark this for future reference: The Complete Guide to Backing Up your iTunes Library.

    Hello ryane84
The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

  • Help! Can't save to disc/backup my iTunes! NO OPTION to save OR back up to disc my iTunes Library appears in the toolbar when I select 'File', then 'Library'. Just 'Organize Library...', 'Export Library...', 'Import Playlist...', and 'Export Playlist...'

Help! I can't save to disc OR backup my iTunes Library! iTunes support instructions are to simply select 'File', then 'Library', then select 'Back Up to Disc', but when I try to the only options that appear are 'Organize Library...', 'Export Library...' then below those are 'Import Playlist...' and 'Export Playlist...' (which appears in the list, but I cannot select). No option to save my library appears at all. Just those four. I've had no problems syncing, playing, adding or purchasing with my account and my iTunes version is up to date. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and what I should do so I can save my library?

How can I upload my playlist off my IPod to a new pc?

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • How can i save my Shuffle playlist on new version of itunes?

I got a new laptop and was forced to load up the latest version of itunes, which for me has worked fine. I connected my first gen. shuffle and married it to my new computer. But on my old computer/version of itunes i was able to keep the "shuffle's playlist" on itunes at all times so it was easy to tweak my songs and then whenever i charged my ipod all the songs would update. now it seems i cannot keep the playlist contents of my shuffle on itunes and have to update the shuffle manually while its connected which takes much more time. Where is the setting to change this so i can see the shuffle playlist all the time?

It appears from many other posts that the " Keep This iPod in the Source List" function isn't included in iTunes 7 unfortunately. You can leave your feedback on it's absence at this link: Apple Product Feedback
You can check out a workaround at this link which may help out for now: Create ready-to-sync playlists for Shuffles in iTunes 7

  • ITunes can't save changes in Windows 7 64-bit

I've got the latest version of iTunes (9.1.11.1) running on Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit edition. Since I installed it and imported all my music and old database files (to preserve my playlists) I keep getting an error message that iTunes can't save the changes to iTunes because it doesn't have the rights to write to the "C" drive. Is there some permission I'm missing? Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers.

Make sure your windows permissions are correct.
Go into Windows Explorer. Find this folder
    C:\users\ username \My Music\iTunes
Right-click > Properties, and go to the Security tab. Make sure your userID has _full control_ and ownership over that entire itunes folder, and all its /child/subfolders.
You'll have to restart itunes so it will read the new permission settings.
This link has some screenshots of what I'm talking about.

How can I copy a playlist into a pages or numbers document?

    Open the Playlist.
    File>Print.
In the Print settings, select Save as PDF
Open Pages and a new document
Open the PDF with Preview or Reader
Select ALL text in the PDF
    Copy
    Paste into the Pages document.
That's a long way to do it unless you know of a way to import PDFs into iWork.

Insert the flash drive into your computer.  Highlight the tracks in iTunes, and drag them to the flash drive.
If you run iTunes in full screen mode, make it smaller so that you can do the drag.

  • I have one playlist on iphone4. how can i add new playlist without deleting old one. i do not have old playlist in itunes any more.

I have one playlist on iphone4. how can i add new playlist without deleting old one. i do not have old playlist in itunes any more. When i try to sync iphone with itunes it says that this action will remove my old playlist and all songs.

"it says that this action will remove my old playlist and all songs."
Are you connecting to a different iTunes library than you normally connect to?  That will erase the songs and playlists since the iPhone can't be connected to multiple libraries even if it is in manual sync mode.
If you no longer have access to the original library that your iPhone calls 'home', then the only way to save the playlist (and the songs on your iPhone) would be to use a 3rd party application to extract your iPhone contents to this new iTunes library you're trying to connect to.
