Can i save streaming audio to a file on my iMac?

Is there a relatively easy way to save audio to the hard drive? Most audio capture and editing software seems to have too many extra features and looks complicated? (this is my first Mac) We would jst like to save an occasional file to replay later. Thanks in advance, Pat

True "streaming" media (served from streaming server protocols like RTSP) are not cached so you can only save a "link" to the file. 99.9% of Internet media isn't streamed. They download.
Is it then possible to capture (with software) something we listen to on the Internet - cached or not?

VLC doesn't save streaming audio to mp3 anymore

I want to save streaming audio from the internet to my HDD in mp3 format while listening to it at the same time. That worked fine when I did it with VLC, using the GUI. To be specific, here are the settings that I used:
VLC main menu: File>Open Network Stream>Open...Network>tick HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS and enter the URL (http://vruk.sc.llnwd.net:12265) >under Advanced Options tick Stream/Save and click on Settings (opens Stream Output window)>Outputs, tick Play locally, tick File, click on Browse and enter filename and location for the stream saving file, i.e. /home/robert/vlcout.mp3>Encapsulation method, tick on Raw>Transcoding options, tick on Audio codec and select mp3>Bitrate 128 kb/s, Channels 2>OK, OK, to start recording. Stop or Quit VLC, to stop recording.
Two days ago I upgraded VLC from v.0.8.5-9 to v.0.8.6a-4 (which also upgraded ffmpeg from v.20060920-1 to v.20070131-1), and now the above procedure isn't working anymore. The stream isn't playing anymore over my speakers while the encoding supposedly is going on, the vlcout.mp3 file is empty (0B), and VCL gives me the following error messages:
stream_out_transcode error: cannot find encoder ((null))
stream_out_transcode error: cannot create audio chain
main error: cannot create packetizer output (mpga)
It looks as though VLC is failing to encode the stream to mp3. The VLC documentation (see http://www.videolan.org/streaming-features.html) in a table of "possible output formats for the transcoding module" says that for mp3 audio "you have to compile ffmpeg with libmp3lame support." Has the new ffmpeg v.20070131-1 (in extra) been compiled without mp3 support? If so, why? Apparently, the older version I was using last week supported mp3.
libmp3lame is installed on my system. There is a very recent alternative ffmpeg-svn-8218-1 pkgbuild in AUR that enables libmp3lame in the configure section of the build but when I try to install the package built that way it conflicts with ffmpeg v.20070131-1, and to remove the official ffmpeg v.20070131-1 I'd first have to remove a slew of other packages that depend on it.
Is it possible to remove VLC v.0.8.6a-4 and ffmpeg v.20070131-1 and go back to the older versions that worked for me? There was talk of a bug in ffmpeg in this forum at the end of January; what about it?

I solved the problem for now by downgrading both vlc and ffmpeg to the earlier versions that I was using before. Saving an audio stream in mp3 format is working again now.
I believe there are problems with the current versions of both vlc and ffmpeg.
1. vlc 0.8.6a doesn't seem to have ffmpeg enabled, i.e.
$ vlc --list | grep ffmpeg
VLC media player 0.8.6a Janus
whereas with the older version I get
$ vlc --list | grep ffmpeg
VLC media player 0.8.5 Janus

2. The current package ffmpeg v.20070131-1 in extra may not refer to various libraries correctly in its configure parameters. E.g. in AUR there is an alternative pkgbuild ffmpeg-svn 8218-1 from 04-Mar-2007 in which the original configure parameters were replaced as follows:
--enable-mp3lame --> --enable-libmp3lame
--enable-vorbis --> --enable-libvorbis
--enable-faac --> --enable-libfaac
--enable-faad --> --enable-libfaad
--enable-a52 --> --enable-liba52
--enable-dts --> --enable-libdts
Has the ffmpeg package in extra been compiled with mp3 support which is needed for the transcoding module of vlc to encode in mp3 format? The alternative ffmpeg package in AUR conflicts with the ffmpeg package from extra, and I don't know how to tell the new vlc to use the alternative package instead of the one from extra.
Someone ought to look into this.

Sorry, not possible in PSE itself. You'd need to put your photo into the web creation software you use. If you are using an older version of PSE some versions created web albums/galleries which included an index.html page, but that's as much as PSE does. The same thing may happen in Windows Explorer, specifically if it is a very big file (physical size), so preparing the preview may take a lot of time.
In that case it is used by "another application", that is: Explorer.

As long as you don't have code in your animation then just hit File->Export->Export Movie, then configure the options.
Here's an article on exporting sound, images and video. Just skip on down to exporting AVI and it explains the process. The codec is in the Video Compression section. When you click Settings for Video Compression, the codec is in the drop-down at the top. There's various kinds but to get lossless quality AVI you'll have to choose Uncompressed / None for full quality. Again, the file will be huge and you'll need to use another program (like Adobe Media Encoder) or Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, etc, depending on what format you intend to compress it ultimately.

Conforming in HDV:can I save on hd the m2t file instead to send to camera ?

I use a Sony HVR V1 and FCP 6 to edit HDV footage.
My Sony PlayStation 3 handles mpeg 2 files very well.
I acquire with FCP by firewire, I edit and after conforming I use print to video to export to camera.
After I use Apple DVHSCap to get from camera the m2t file , I rename it to m2v and I put it on the PS3.
Can I avoid to export to camera and to re-acquire from camera ?? Can I save the file m2t that creates FCP after conforming on Hard Disk instead to send it to the camcorder ?
For me is important to get native m2t file to obtain higher quality.
A question: why a m2v file on Mac with VLC is not very smooth like on PS3 ?? On PS3 is true smooth, on Mac is choppy and I see the artifacts of interlacing.

your workflow is little confusing...
m2t is a transport stream, which contains both video and audio multiplexed into one file. m2v is an elementary stream, containing video only. You are not accomplishing anything by changing the extension to m2v.
The quality of the video is not in the extension, it is in the encoding. When you export to the camera in HDV mode, you are letting the camera encode back to mpeg2. Don't know how much control you have over the encoding process there. YOu are most likely bound by the presets the camera has. If you use Compressor you can encode to mpeg2 m2v, mpeg2 m2t, mpeg2 with layer1 audio program stream, and many others.
I would read up on video compression both in your manuals and on the web. There is a lot to know about it to get good results.
Don't judge the quality of the video on your computer screen. You should plug your computer into the television if you don't have an external video monitor, and compare the two then...

Save RTP audio in a file

I am on pc A and want to receive audio stream from pcB and store it in a file on pcB. AVReceive2 works but it plays audio, doesnt save it in file.
Please someone tell me how to do saving RTP audio in a file.

I think you can create a media locator on the server and save the file on the client. For one stream, you can create a DataSink to a file. But if there are more than one stream at the same time, you can create a SessionManager.
In this Session Manager, implement the Update method to catch the events of a new stream.
For every new stream, you can play the stream and save it.
But this is just what I've read. I'm planning to do it too..do you have it already done?

Can Flash play multiple audio and video files at the same time?

You never edit within a clip. The purpose of opening a clip is to make sync adjustments, audio equalization, color correction, stabilization, things that you might want do overall to the master clip before you edit it. You edit the portion of the clip you want from the browser into a project. There is really very seldom any need to open a clip into the timeline.

Firefox opens a pdf in the browser but I can't save it as a pdf file. How do I save pdf files as pdfs?

When I open pdf files in the browser I do not have a way to save the file as a pdf file on my hard drive. I can only save it as a firefox image file one page at a time. I can't print it either except as individual pages from the image file. When I use the "Save As" icon my only options are to save as a Firefox file. What am I missing? Thanks.

Try this, when I right clicked on the document to rotate the image a noticed a tool bar appeared at the bottom of the page with the save icon. It then disappeared, but by hovering at near the bottom of the document the tool bar appears and I can save the PDF.

How can I combine the audio and video files from youtube downloads when they don't automatically combine?

I'm using YouTube Video and Audio Downloader. Sometimes the audio and video files combine automatically, sometimes they don't - remaining as separate " DASH - .m4a and DASH - .mp4 ". It used to be that when this would happen I could open up a "ffmpeg" window which would allow me to "manually" convert them to a combined .mp4 file. It was a "drag and drop" type of interface. For some reason I can no longer access that ffmpeg combining function. I tried clicking on ffmpeg.exe. I tried re-downloading ffmpeg several times, both from the Downloader options tab and from the ffmpeg website.

Can you edit whole audio as one file?

I have done the bulk of transitions and mixing in final cut and just want to use soundtrack to eliminate some hiss and tiny bit of clean up can i send the audio as a complete file so I dont have to do multitrack and risk messing my mixes and transitions etc?

I do my complicated audio in Logic Pro, so I don't really understand Soundtrack Pro.
That said, if you want to apply one effect to the whole sequence in FCP,
you can nest the sequence:
1. Edit > Select All
2. Sequence > Nest (no need to mixdown audio if it's stereo)
3. Option-click on the nested Audio to open it in the Viewer.
4. Add your global effects.
Sweet!
Nesting is described in the FCS2 manual on page III-416.
It's a really useful technique. You can go back and
tweak the original edit, and the nested sequence will update.
BTW, when mixing digital audio, most folks set it to peak
around -12dB.
Note that if you have some clips that are too loud or soft,
it's best to adjust those clips' volumes, instead of squashing
the whole mix with a global limiter.
Finally, the best way to check if your mix levels are even
is to jump around to different locations of the timeline,
listening at a low level, making sure you can hear all the elements.
Sometimes the best way to even things out is to adjust the EQ
instead of the gain.

How can i cut the audio from 1 file and put it on another?

I have these2 files of the same movie, 1 is amazing quality but theres no audio. the other is crummy quality but has perfect audio. How can I cut the audio from the good audio version and paste it onto the good video file?

Open the movie and press "Command J". This will bring up the properties window. Click on the Audio Track or Video Track and the "Extract/Delete" buttons will light up. Click "Delete" and it'll delete the currently selected track, click "Extract" and it will extract the selected track into a new movie. Just use Delete on the correct track and you're halfway there.
Then, select the movie that is just an Audio Track now, do "Command A" then "Command C" to copy the audio track. Go to the movie that's just a video track, move the insertion point to the beginning of the video then do "Option Command V" to add the Audio Track to the Video Track side by side.
