Can I Set Audiobooks to Shuffle?

It seems that iTunes 10.4 has taken away the ability to set the "skip when shuffling" option for audiobooks. If I declare a file as an "audiobook," the box is automatically checked and I cannot uncheck it. Which is too bad because I would really like to be able to shuffle my library of radio shows again.
Can anyone confirm that Audiobooks are forced to have "skip when shuffling" checked? This applies to purchased and homemade audiobook files and it affects playback in iTunes, on iPhones and iPods. I'd check the patch notes to see if it was a deliberate change but I can't find them anywhere.
Can anyone think of a workaround so that I can shuffle audiobooks (without having to put them back in the Music library)?

Did you already load the audiobook manually (by dragging it to the shuffle)? To confirm that the audiobook is on the shuffle...
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar. If the sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
Click the small triangle to the left of the shuffle name (in the sidebar) to drop down its content list, indented below the shuffle. Click on Audiobooks there. To the right, your audiobook(s) should be listed.
NOTE: if you don't see Audiobooks on the content list, there are no audiobooks on the shuffle.
When you turn ON the shuffle, you are playing from the default All Songs list. Audiobooks (and podcasts) do not play from the All Songs list. You need to use VoiceOver to select the audiobook from the playlist menu. This document explains how to set up and use VoiceOver on your shuffle

Usually, in addition to the "Shuffle All" function on the main menu, there's a shuffle play mode that can be toggled during playback.

You may have the accessibility VoiceOver feature or another one turned on.

You can set any song to Skip when shuffling.
In your iTunes Library, highlight the song and right-click/Get Info. On the Options tab is the Skip when shuffling box. Select that and then Sync the iPod with your Library.

The shuffle setting in the main menu will shuffle through the entire library as you have found out.
You need to go to settings>shuffle this will toggle through off/song/album. Once you have set this it will stay the same until you change the setting.
Now when you start playing a song in a playlist the iPod will shuffle through that playlist (or if you select your song through artist then it will shuffle through all the songs for that artist etc)

Unfortunately that is the way the interface is designed. If you select an album from the albums menu, then it plays an album, optionally shuffled and/or repeated. If you select from the artists menu then you should be able to shuffle the albums or songs by that artist or have them played in sequence, again with options to repeat. You can also cue up a number of songs or albums with the On-the-Go playlist feature.

HT1719 can't get my ipod shuffle to work in new fiesta

I collected my new fiesta on sunday 14th Oct 2013, but can't get my ipod shuffle ( 4th generation) to work or sync with the car.
I am not technical so simple answers would really be appreciated.

It's possible that your car's audio system is not designed to work with an iPod shuffle. You should look at the car audio system's documentation to see what types of devices are supported when connected to the USB port on the car audio system.
An iPod does not "sync" with the car audio system. The system is only using the device connected to the USB port as a storage device. It would be the same as connecting a simple USB flash drive, with songs files on it, to that port. The car audio system reads the song files and does the playing. The iPod is not doing the playing. So the question is, does the car audio system know HOW to find song files on an iPod? You may want to check the settings screen on the car audio system, to see if there is a specific setting that tells it you are connecting an iPod.
If the car audio system has an auxiliary audio input port (which looks like the headphones jack on the shuffle), you can connect the shuffle (or any device with standard audio output) to the car audio system using something like this

using itnes 10 if I use get info and then try to set skip when shuffling (or indeed change any of the attributes on the options page) it accepts the change but when I go back and look the option has not changed! Just to make sure we're talking about the same things, this is the XP version of the advanced security settings dialog. Here I'm making sure my account and system have full control of this folder (iTunes), all subfolders and files. Further I have ticked the box to replace all existing security permissions on all the files & subfolders (child objects) with the permissions shown in the dialog. Additional allow permissions for other users and groups can be ignored, but the highlighted ones are essential for iTunes to work properly.

You can set an iPod Classic to shuffle in a Playlist. Well, my Classic (running 1.1.2 PC) can.
What are you doing after setting shuffle to songs in the Settings menu?
What you need to do is scroll down to the Playlist of your choice and either:
highlight the Playlist and press the Play button (which will play a song at random from that Playlist). When that song finishes, another song will be played - at random - from that same Playlist
enter the Playlist and choose a song that you want to be played first. When that song finishes, another song from that Playlist will be chosen - at random - to be played.
When songs are being played in shuffle mode (the random choice of song), you will see the shuffle icon in the top right corner of the screen. (It's the same icon when in shuffle albums mode.) What happens, that is different, in your case?
