Can I set disk utility to make it impossible to erase my main drives?

Just wondering if there's a way to do that. It never hurts to have more safeguards in place. I am erasing CDs and DVDs daily and would like to set it so that erasing my main drive or my La Cie isn't even an option.

I don't know what to suggest because I don't have any idea what your needs are.  If you work with video and graphics you probably need a fast drive (if your computer supports FW800 that would be the best choice for externals.)  An internal hard drive would be best if you have expansion room internally.  Single drives are available up to 750 GBs capacity.  Your best choices both for speed and size would be Western Digital's Caviar series, Seagate's Barracudas, or the Maxtor Maxlines.
For externals you can purchase a bare drive and install it in a separate enclosure.  The enclosure should support FW800 if your computer has FW800 ports, use the Oxford 922 or 924 chipset, and support a drive of the size you intend to purchase (some enclosures will not support large drives.)
If you think you will need future expansion then you may consider getting an external case that supports multiple drives in RAID configurations.

  • Setting Disk Utility to lock out bad sectors

Setting Disk Utility to lock out bad sectors
When my Leopard DVD arrives I'm planning on doing a clean install to my internal HD. I would like to format the drive to lock out bad sectors but I can't seem to find a setting to do that in Disk Utility or anything about it in Help.

    Hi Peggy Lynn;
To the best of my knowledge there is no way to lock out bad sectors.
What you can do is erase the disk and under security tab have zeros written to the disk. When you do this if any bad sectors are found, they will be mapped out so that will no longer be used.
Disk drive always have some extra sector which can be mapped in to replace any that might go bad. The disk drive can continue doing this until the sectors are all used up then you will have to replace it.

Which keyboard layout you were using? German, French ... I suppose your layout is reset to the default: US and you are unable to find the "?" or "/" ...
Please have a look into the keyboard viewer, to see how the layout of your keyboard is actually.

I am trying to upgrad the hard drive in my mac book pro using the disk utility in an attempt to clone my old hard drive.  I can only get so far throughj the process where its about to start cloing when I get a message " error 254".  Any idea what that means and how do I get around this issue so I can use my new hard drive?  Thanks for your input.

Connect the HDD to your MBP.  Open Disk Utility>Erase and drag the HDD icon inrt the Name field.  The format should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Click on the Erase button.
Then try the clone process again.  You may use Disk Utility>Restore or a third party cloning application such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper.

  • Can't get disk utility to work with leopard - iBook running super slow

I have an iBook G4 and it's running ssuuppeerr slow but I can't get disk utility to come up after I press C down. I don't know if I'm pressing it at the wrong time but I restart with the C pressed and it gets to the apple screen and it won't go anywhere else. It will restart normally but not with the C key. I've been trying for an hour and I can't get it to get to disk utility!
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you want Disk Utility on your iBook or do you want Disk Utility on your install disc?
For Disk Utility on your iBook, go to Finder>Applications>Utilities and look in the Utilities folder. You will find Disk Utility there, and drag it to your dock where it will be handy to have it.
For Disk Utility on your install disc, insert the install disc and then restart and hold down "C" as you boot up so that you will boot from the install disc. Then choose your language, and then look for Disk Utility in the menu bar--I don't remember if it says "Utilities" or "Disk Utility". If you need to repair your startup disk (i.e. your internal hard drive), you would boot up from the install disc to do this.
However, I am wondering if you have enough RAM to run Leopard. You will get a big boost in performance if you max out your RAM. Leopard will run best if you can put a 1 GB RAM stick in your RAM slot.
If you want to repair permissions after installing and updating Leopard, you can do this with Disk Utility on your iBook. Repair permissions until there is nothing left to repair.
If you have more questions, please post back. Also, which ibook G4 do you have?
    Good luck!

  • Network Installer: Can't run Disk Utility

    Hi, all.
Just created a net install image. SIU's log did not report anything out of the ordinary, however for some reason I can't run Disk Utility, and I need to as the automated installation options frequently don't work.
I select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and nothing happens.
I run the Terminal and try hdiutil and get
    dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib
    Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/A/DiskImages
    Reason: image not found
    Trace/BPT Trap
Now, if we mount that image on a running Mac we can see the following
    bash$ ls -l /usr/lib/libbz*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138436 Nov 1 11:33 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.2.dylib
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138444 Mar 4 10:19 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
If we run the same command on the netbooted machine
    bash# ls -l /usr/lib/libbz*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138436 Nov 1 11:33 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.2.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
So it looks like libbz2.1.0.dylib is symlink'd to libbz2.1.0.3.dylib, except libbz2.1.0.3.dylib doesn't exist in the netbooted image. But it does exist in the image when it isn't netbooted! Yes, they are the same image!
I also have two "Help" menus, just for kicks.
Does anybody know what's going on? I guess I'll re-create the image, but it'd be nice to understand what's going on and know if it's something I can somehow avoid in the future.
On the lighter side, this is the first time in nearly a year I haven't had to manually insert the CoreVideo.framework to get the image to boot!

Ah, forget what I said about it being the same image. I didn't notice that my chroot hadn't worked when I was checking... I was checking the live system instead. Good thing, too, 'cause that was just TOO weird.
Still doesn't explain why there's a link to a non-existent file. To test I created a symlink for libbz2.1.0.3.dylib which just points at the previous version. Guess what: Disk Utility works now.
I'm re-creating the image anyway and we'll see if the problem exists on that one as well. If it does, I won't be pleased. That'll be two repeatable bugs that break the NetInstall function for me in a year. Not cool.
Anybody else getting weird output if they type hdiutil in to Terminal at the Network Installer? Or do you have a non-working Disk Utility?

FireFox can't open lots of files it isn't suposed to. DMG is opened by the Mac osx as a virtual volume file you just drag the FireFox icon to where you want it installed. Check your desktop for a FireFox volume... like a drive. Double click the DMG file if it is not there. This is how Mac works it has nothing to do with FireFox, many apps install this way!

Can I use Disk Utility to erase Apple TV hard drive?

I don't know, but I doubt it can be done using Disk Utility. I suggest you consult the user manual for it or see if there is a Reset option in the onscreen menues. If you don't have a manual, then you will find one at http://support.apple.com/manuals.

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive.  I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed.  Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.
When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Hi I'd like to jump in here. Your app showed me this:
    Time Machine:
              Skip System Files: NO
              Mobile backups: OFF
              Auto backup: YES
              Volumes being backed up:
Macintosh HD: Disk size: 749.3 GB Disk used: 453.81 GB
              Destinations:
                        Plastic Wrapper [Local] (Last used)
                        Total size: 999.86 GB
                        Total number of backups: 64
                        Oldest backup: 2013-07-24 23:25:11 +0000
                        Last backup: 2013-11-17 01:40:47 +0000
Size of backup disk: Too small
                                  Backup size 999.86 GB < (Disk used 453.81 GB X 3)
Time Machine details may not be accurate.
All volumes being backed up may not be listed.
              /sbin excluded from backup!
              /usr excluded from backup!
              /System excluded from backup!
              /bin excluded from backup!
              /private excluded from backup!
              /Library excluded from backup!
              /Applications excluded from backup!
Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?
    Thanks,

  • Should i run disk utility check after a restore onto a brand new drive?

My hard drive died on my daughter's macbook, just replaced it and did a restore.
i am wondering if i should do any disk utility check(permissions or repair) on a new hard drive because i have restored a time machine backup onto it.
I say this because any issues on the backup files are now placed onto a new hard drive.

    Kappy wrote:
It can't hurt to repair permissions. Most likely you'll get a long stream of stuff most of which is irrelevant and can be ignored. If there are any repair issues this will fix them. Be sure to run DU from the system you just installed. No need to boot from an installer disc.
BTW, did you properly prep the drive? Partitioned GUID, Mac OS Extended, Journaled format, and one pass Zero Data?
I did partitiion the drive guid, os extended, journaled. but i dont remember a choice on the onepass zero data but i assume it happened with the partitioning.
i understand no need to boot from the disc for permission check but if i do a verify or repair of the disk, then dont i have to boot from the install disc?

  • Can't press apply button when using disk utility to make a new partition

    Hey guys,
It might sound silly but when I use disk utility to divide my hd without deleting my files the apply button stays blank, it doesn't allow me to press apply, can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Tom,
Of course, that makes perfect sense! When I made my last disk image backup, my PowerBook had a serious, undiagnosed problem and I had booted from the startup disk to have a current backup of everything before I sent it off for repair.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Disk utility to make raid 10 on an external HDD?

    Hi,
    I have a MacPro 3.0Ghz but use a 3.75TB SataMax external tower HDD. (i.e 5x 750GB)
At the moment it is Raid 0, but I want to make it a Raid 10 format. Can Disk Utility do this and if so, what's the process?
    Any thoughts? Thanks
    M

    Hey,
    You're going to kick yourself...
Go to Disk Utility > Help, then type "raid".  You should see an option for "Combining RAID sets".

  • Can't open disk utility at startup, can't format new hard drive

My hard drive on my 2011 macbook pro recently went out, so I purchased a new one. I plugged it in internally and brought up disk utility in internet recovery, but it didn't recognize the drive. So I tried using an external hard drive reader, but now recovery mode can't be accessed at all, whether I press option or command r after startup, it still gives me the same gray folder with a question mark icon. Is my recovery mode damaged, and is that possible to fix?

You can use an external USB disk/flash drive which has Recovery  (or a full OS - requires a 16GB disk space on a USB flash or a JHFS+ partition with the OSX) on it. Boot from that recovery USB drive. if Internet Recovery worked once, the MBP is already capable of repeating it. It requires an Ethernet or WiFi connection. If neither is available, or is spotty, Internet Recovery will not work. Can you try Internet recovery via Ethernet cable, if all your previous attempts have been via WiFi?
If the drive is not recognized when plugged into the internal SATA bus, either a cable is not plugged in properly (the replacement drive never showed up successfully as per the OP even once, or the drive is DoA). It should be tested externally. Pulling the drive out and putting it back is fairly easy in the 2011/2012 MBPs. The cable could have been damaged during the replacement. The non-drive end of SATA/IR Sensor cable on the main logic board could be loose or damaged.
If you have a external cable SATA-to-USB or SATA-to-FW (very unlikely), format the new drive using a different PC/MAC to make sure it is not DoA. What brand/model is this new drive? Is it an SSD? It may require a FW upgrade.
If there is a second MAC available, a Target Disk Mode boot (press T while powering up the mac with the new drive) may allow the second working mac to format the new drive via Disk Utility.

  • Disk utility to make bootable Vista on external hard drive

    Hi All,
I've browsed a bit in search of an answer to this question but I've not gotten anything definitive yet. I hope you can help...
My goal is to do turn a disk image (iso) into a bootable Vista install, on an external hard drive. I have successfully done this on the EHD using this process:
    http://iuseapple.com/blog/apple-how-to/advanced-os-x/2007/10/29/how-to-install-l eopard-from-external-firewire-hard-drive/
My reasoning was that a similar process would work for Vista, but I'm hitting a wall. Some ideas of what may be the problem:
The Vista partition on my EHD is 2.5 gigs, which is just a hair larger than my iso of Vista. Should I make the partition more generous?
The partition is formatted in FAT32. I have had issues with this before, when trying to put over 2GB (or was it 4GB?) onto a FAT32 disk at once. I learned how to split dmgs/isos into pieces and move them over like that. Could that be the issue? If so, is it possible to accomplish my goal with a multi-part image?
I don't know that much about Vista. Will it just not tolerate a boot from an EHD?
The progress I've made so far is limited--I keep hitting a wall in Disk Utility. As in the Leopard approach, I attempt to Restore the image (Vista.iso) to the target drive (Win Vista). The computer thinks about it and then gives me a 254 error and a message along the lines of "could not validate source."
Any help would be appreciated. (Including a definitive "this won't work.")
    Thanks in advance,
    edge65

Windows will neither install on nor boot from external drives.
