Can I set up a small home network on mt BThub3

Hi,
I have two standard PCs one running on Vista and the other on XP also a laptop. They all successfully access the internet via a BT Hub 3. One computer connects via a LAN cable the laptop and the other computer connect via a wirless connection
If possible I would like to network these three computers via the BT hub for data transfer and also for the computers to use the single printer I have.
I have read various items about setting up the computers to share a printer but as I have no experience of networks and how to intergrate the computers through the hub.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
David

This is quite straighforward, but I would recommend that you look at one of the many help pages on the web, that describe in detail what you need to do.
The home hub does not really play any part in this, its just an interconnection point.
Here is a page to get you started with Windows XP.

and Vista

  • Setting up a (small) home network

I have an iBook G4, an old iMac (running OS 9), an inkjet printer, a laser printer, Airport Extreme and an Internet modem. I would like to hook all of this up so that both Macs are connected to both printers, both Macs are connected to the Internet and that I have wireless connection for internet and printing (to both printers) available to the iBook. (The iMac is not Airport compatible.)
Right now, everything works, but we have to unplug the printers from one Mac to the Airport when we want to print. Is there a single piece of hardware we need to hook this all together, or is it going to be more complicated than that?
I know just enough about this stuff to get by and/or to be dangerous, so any advice would be appreciated.

You've got a cable or DSL modem, right? I happen to have DSL, and my DSL modem is actually a combo DSL modem/router/wireless access point. So life is a bit easier for me. But both of my sons are on cable, and I think they both have a single wired port coming out of their cable modem, to which they have to connect a wireless router (like an Airport Extreme Base Station). Are you like that?
If so, while I don't have an AEBS, as far as I know, an AEBS has firewall capability in it, and can configure for DHCP IP address assignment or static IP address assignment or a mix of both (i.e., it routes).
If my presupposition is true, there are a couple of things I would do to configure your network. First would be to put your DSL/cable modem in bridge mode (so the IP address assigned by your ISP is passed through to the external IP address side of your AEBS) and then configure the AEBS for NAT (i.e., it doles out 10.0.x.x addresses to everything in your residential LAN). Why? Because if both devices are doing NAT, then the modem is giving your BS a 192.168.x.x address, and then your BS is giving your computers a 10.0.x.x address. Some applications (most notably iChat) do not like double-NATting traffic through two firewalls/routers.
I'm not sure whether a device in bridge mode can have an active firewall or not. Never tried it. If it can, enable your firewall on the modem. If it can't, enable the firewall in the AEBS.
Now, check whether your printers can support accepting DHCP address assignments from a router. They may need to have static IP addresses (i.e., you may need to manually assign IP addresses to the devices). I don't know enough about AEBSs to know whether they can support a mix of static and dynamic IP addresses on the local LAN side, or whether it is all of one or all of the other. So you may need to disable DHCP in the AEBS and give it (on the residential LAN side) and your computers and printers a manually assigned IP address. If it supports a mix of static and DHCP, just give them IP addresses in the static address range, and your computers can still be configured to accept DHCP assignments from the AEBS. If the printers support DHCP, never mind all this drivel.
If you don't have enough wired ports for the iMac and one or more of the printers are not wireless-capable, connect a printer or two to your iMac via USB, and enable printer sharing in System Preferences > Sharing on the iMac. Other computers on your residential LAN should be able to find the printers so long as the iMac is powered up and printer sharing has been enabled on it.
    Now have that other martini!

  • Small home network using a mini

Hello i'd like to set up a small home network. The component i have are:
A broadband connection via a cable modem
A mac mini which can act as a server (i'd like to provide access to shared photos and music, and connect an external HD for backup and storage)
    2 airport wireless routers
2 macbook pro laptops and 1 mini all with wireless
Any suggestions as to the most effective way to link this all together?
    Thanks
    Tim

    Hi Tim,
You've accidentally posted this on the iPod Mini forum, not the Mac Mini!

  • Can't even connect to my home network.

Title says it all, bought a 64gig iPad wifi today...little did i know tons of users are having wifi problems...my problem doesnt seem to fit the others though. Most of what i've read people can connect for a bit, and after being in sleep mode then it has problems. I can't even connect to my home network. Works fine with my ipod Touch, laptop, etc. I dont have any form of security set up on my router what so ever. I plan on buying a new router soon (for reasons other than this iPad crap.) I'd really like to see some kind of resolution to this problem before i need to do that though.
I tried all that i could out of the trouble shooting stuff. nothing worked. I even tried setting up a static IP for it. What else can be done? i really dont want to have to return it since its such a nice piece of tech.

Umm... one of the questions that's been asked is whether his iPad will connect anywhere else, If it will, the issues is between the iPad and the particular configuration he has at home. If not, the issue is with the iPad.
Since we don't have an answer to that question yet, your inference that anyone is telling him to "phone ahead to every business or hotel he plans on visiting to request that they replace their "clunky old router" " is unjustified and unhelpful.
Please, continuously blaming every ipad wifi issue on the same router that happily works with every other device is getting old. What standards does iPad support that these clunky old routers do not?
Since, as you've said in another post, you're experienced in the ways of the internet, you will know that it's quite common for new kit to have problems connecting to old kit.

  • Setting up a small business network using mac and windows pcs

Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.

  • Can I set up a wi-fi network using only my iPad?

My rural area is finally getting high-speed cable internet, which means I can ditch my 3G plan, get wi-fi, and turn into a movie-streaming couch potato. Besides my iPad, I have an ancient Compaq desktop which I would like to dispose of. However, I don't want to do this until I know I can proceed with the following: Can I set up a wi-fi network in my home with just my iPad? Or do I need to keep my PC to set up and maintain the wi-fi network? Or alternatively, can I use the PC to start the wi-fi network, then get rid of it? Or do I need it at all--is my [updated] iPad 2 all I need to set up the network (besides the obvious modem/router, etc?).  Thank you very much.

You will need the cable internet service and a wireless router (usually provided by the cable company). Most routers are configured through a web page and I think you should be able to do that from your iPad in the event you ever need to change anything.

  • How can I set up a wi-fi network, using one time capsule and two airport express

how can I set up a wi-fi network, using one time capsule and two airport express ?
The time capsule is near the Mac. ok
The first Airport is on the corridor, ok, works well and the App on the iPad signals so, ok
But when I plug the next Airport on another room nearby nothing happens, and signals disconected ....
is the signal so weak that is not able to go to ono room to the other ?

Well, even if you have the first express set up to extend the network, the second express can only extend from the TimeCapsule.
Maybe you got walls of sheetrook in the way, or kitchen/bathroom tiles, etc, dampening the signal rapidly.

  • How can I set up a guest WiFi network using Time Capsule and Airport Express extension?

How can I set up a guest WiFi network using Time Capsule and Airport Express extension?

Sorry, but it is not possible to "extend" the Guest Network using either wireless or an Ethernet connection.

  • Help setting up small home network with PC and an imac!!!?

I have an imac in my room, and my mother has a JP PC in her room across the house. We have a router and modem on her computer(I connect to the internet through the router signal)
I just recently bought a new printer. It is a wifi printer. I was told by a friend that I need to setup a small netowrk so all the computers/printers in the house can talk to one another. Because right now my printer is installed and connected to the router signal (but my computer does not reconize it to print....)
I started a small network on my moms PC...but when I can't make a network CD like it tells me to because my computer is a Mac....how do I continue to setup this network? Can I set it up first on my mac as well???PLEASE HELP! I want to use my printer!

You can just connect the WRT54G wireless router’s LAN port to BEFSR41 router’s LAN port by using a network cable as specified in this configuring wireless router as access point article, after that can connect other computers to that wireless router with or without cable. Finally do more test to check the performance. Hope it helps.

  • I can access my time capsule from my mac mini at work but my macbook can only access it from my home network. how do i fix this?

I have a Mac Mini and a MacBook, both were configured at home to access the time capsule. I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home. The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow. Accessing the same files from an older HP laptop is as fast as accessing its own hard drive. How can I speed up the accessing of these files from my apple products. One would think they would work fast and the 'windows' computers would take minutes to map the drive each time...
    Thanks for any help.

I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home.
This cannot happen by magic though.. you must have configured the mini to access the TC remotely.. which method are you using, BTMM and iCloud??
The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
How is the Macbook configured to access the TC remotely?? If you are trying to use BTMM and iCloud, then it might be a case that with the mini running the connection cannot be done by more than one computer at a time.. this is generally the case although I do not know if that is specifically true of BTMM method. Try turning off the mini and leave it off.. (off not standby)... then reboot the TC when you are at home.. and then try and connect the laptop to the TC the next morning from work. See if it is then able to capture the connection.. if so start up the mini and I suspect it now will not be able to connect.. that will prove that the TC cannot cope with two remote connections.
There also could be another factor in here. If you are accessing the laptop via the same router as the mini is on.. then actually you cannot have two users mount the same files on a TC.. from the same IP address.. as far as the TC is concerned both devices have identical IP, that is the public IP of the work location router.
If you happen to not be using BTMM then the situation is even easier.. you cannot make two different devices connect to the same network resource using the same port. That is the failing of the NAT system.. one device uses the port then it cannot be used by a second device. You will need to do some fancy footwork and use a different port.
Anyhow tell us exactly how you are doing remote access.. otherwise I am just guessing.
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow.
Are you talking about files you are hosting on the TC?? Not Time Machine backups??
Can you tell me exactly how you are accessing the TC.. please do a test..
Copy a file to the TC and from the TC using the Laptop.. Use a single very large file, eg 1GB movie file.
Give me a read and write speed.. you can use activity monitor to give me an aprox average speed as well as peak.
Do the same test from the same computer with wireless turned off running ethernet.
Then do the tests from the mini.. same ones.. copy large file to and from the TC by ethernet and by wireless.. when using ethernet make sure wireless is off.
I strongly recommend you set IPv6 to link local only for your wireless and ethernet setup in the Mac.
    eg
Now do the test from the HP laptop and give me the results from that.
Is the issue wireless only.. ??
Then you might need to spend a bit of time fixing the wireless in the Macs.. you can run wireless diagnostics in Mavericks.

  • Setting up DHCP on home network

I have a home network that has Mac Server running on a Mac mini. I have two Apple Extreme routers. In Server app in the Settings tab of the DHCP section I carelessly deleted all Networks and in the Clients tab I deleted all clients. Now I’m trying to correctly set up DHCP but have been unsuccessful.
If I try to add an entry in the Networks section I get the error message “Another DHCP server might be running”.  In the Clients section I see two identical entries.
I’ve tried to understand the tutorials and other help sources but all of them devolve (for me) into technical gobbledygook that is way beyond my current understanding.
Can anyone provide a recipe for setting up DHCP for my network configuration?

Thanks, Linc. It turns out I did do just that after I concluded that the DNS service on Server is unnecessary when there's a router between the home network and the internet. The error message is probably referring to the router when it mentions "another DHCP server". I've just disabled the DNS service in Server and removed everything in the two tabs for DNS service.
I really don't know what's wrong about using one of the routers as the DHCP server.

  • PC can't log onto Mac on home network

I have a LinkSys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G Firmware Version: v1.02.0 on my home network. Ever since I upgraded to 10.5 I am having this problem: From my IBM Think Center running XP I try to connect to my Mac shares using Add new network place It can see the share I am trying to access (\\IP#\\sharename) and brings up the log on box, which says "connect to 'servername' so I know it's seeing the share. When I type in the mac user's name and password, instead of opening the share, the dialog login box refreshes and replaces the user name I just typed in with "NameOfPcComputer/macUsername" (not helpful!)and I can't connect to the Shared folder on the mac! I never had this problem before 10.5. The share is set with permissions for 2 Samba users with "Read and Write", and "everyone" with no access. Neither user can log in from the PC to the Mac. Both users have accounts on the mac. (not share users only). The shares are in a public folder. I used to use "Share Points" software that worked wonderfully under 10.4 and allowed me to share and set permissions for any folder. Now that does not work with 10.5.

    Hi sdu.cds,
If you are having issues connecting to your Macs from your Windows machines for local file sharing, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful (apologies if you have already seen them):
OS X Yosemite: Set up a Mac to share files with Windows users
OS X Yosemite: Connect to a Mac from a Windows computer
Note: Make sure you are using the user name and password of a user account that is on the Mac when connecting from the Windows machine.

  • Creating a small home network

I have a trusty iMac G4 (17" version) a new Toshiba PC Laptop from work, a Canon Pixma 450 printer and an internet connection.
I am wanting to connect the above so that both computers can use the internet connection and printer and possibly share files with each other.
My Mac has no wireless facility.
The wireless router I am looking at has 4 ports at the back for wired connection which I was going to plug the Mac and Printer into, plus a port for internet.
    Questions are ..
Will this work with a Mac and PC?
How do I file share from Mac to PC?
If I have a 7.0Mb internet connection will a 54Mbs router be enough, will it affect file sharing speed?
Can I just plug them all in and get going in a plug and play stylee?
    Thanks for your time,
    James

    This should help you:
Setting up a local Ethernet network
    Equipment needed:
Cable/DSL modem: usually supplied by the ISP
Gateway/Router: at least a 4-port router, but you can get them with more ports if you need them. (Alternatively, you can get a switching hub to provide additional ports.)
CAT 5 Ethernet cables: one cable is needed for each device connected to the router plus one to connect the router to the cable/DSL modem.
    1. Connect the Cable/DSL modem to the router's WAN port using an Ethernet cable (CAT 5 for 10/100.)
    2. Connect each computer to the router's LAN ports using Ethernet cables. If you have network printers, etc. connect them to a LAN port on the router. If the router doesn't have enough ports, then you will need to purchase one with more ports or connect a switching hub to the router.
    3. Now, for each Mac open its Network preference pane. Select the Built-in Ethernet port for configuration. In the TCP/IP configuration window set the connection/configuration to DHCP from the dropdown menu. Set your Location dropdown menu to Automatic and the Show dropdown menu to Built-in Ethernet.
    4. Shut everything off. First, turn on the Cable/DSL modem and wait for the connect lights to indicate it has connected to the ISP. Next, turn on the router and wait to see if the Cable/DSL modem's communication status light starts to flicker. Also, if there is a status light on the router it should show a connection. Last, power up the computer. If all is well the TCP/IP control panel or Network pref pane should indicate an IP has been obtained from the router, usually in the 192.168.nnn.nnn range. If it's 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then you don't really have a connection.
    5. If you have network printers connected each printer will have to be assigned its own unique IP address in the router's address range (usually 192.168.nnn.nnn.) Assign the printer(s) IP addresses above the number of computers that will be connected but within the router's DHCP address assignment range. Consult the router's documentation for that information. Consult the printer manual for how to assign an IP address to the printer. When you install the printer driver and/or Add the printer you will add it as an IP printer or LPR printer and use the IP address you assigned to the printer.
    6. If you have an USB printer then connect it to one of the computers, install the proper printer driver (if one is not provided with OS X), then add the printer using the Print Setup Utility. Verify the printer works. Then open the Sharing preference pane and turn on Printer Sharing. On the other computers install and/or add the printer using the Print Setup Utility. It should appear under the category of Shared Printers.
    7. To share files use the Sharing preference pane and turn on Personal File Sharing. If you want to share from all computers then turn on file sharing for all the connected computers.

  • Can't connect or see me home network, can see/connect to others.

I have a fun one. I can't see or connect to my home network on 3 seperate iphone 3g's.(not 3gS.) I have a laptop, desktop and xbox that connect fine. It was working 4 days ago on this same router with the same settings. my SSID is being broadcast. I have the same security settings I had before, nothing has changed. WEP, channel 11, 802.1 g and b enabled. I can see my nieghbors wireless networks, but not mine at all. I can even connect to one of my neighbors unsecured network if the wind blows right and I get enough bars. I have reset the network settings on one iphone, restarted it, hard reset, complete restore, tried to "find other" networks. Nothing. (My network is on channel 11 because ALL of my neighbors are currently on channel 6 and it causes all my computers to drop due to interference. Worked fine for days on channel 11.)
It's a brand new belkin router. And it was working fine for over a week. And the laptop, desktop, and xbox are still working fine. but none of the iphones in my house (3) can even see the net work on the screen. (And yes, the SSID is being broadcast.)
Has anyone ever seen this issue?

ok. I have a Belkin Wireless N Router. For some reason the settings appear to have become corrupted. I still have no clue why it was able to work with the computers and xbox, but not the iphones. I now have it working.
    The solution:
Reset your router back to factory. Then rebuild your network settings, do not "restore" from a file. (Don't know why but it didn't work.) I made sure to connect to the network with the phone after each change and saved the settings on the router each time.
Part of the problem may be with alternate channel settings, after I changed to channel 11 again, (to avoid the competition issue with my neighbors on channel 6) the iphone did lose view of the wireless until I rebooted the router. Make sure your router is connected with a hardline while you make the changes.
All is working now, 3 iphones, 2 computers and an xbox in a pair tree!

  • Mac can't see computers on my home network

bought a new imac yesterday. out of box it discovered my home network amnd all the computers that were connected. today, i cant see any of my connected compuers on my home network. I recall, Windows 7 saying a code had to be used for other computers to be allowed the connection but i dont know how to do that on the imac. any suggestions?

First please update your profile, you can find out how by clicking Profile Update. In order to see the other machines on your network you have to turn System Preferences - Sharing on to the preferences you want. Because I don't speak MS Windows you will need to look up the equivilant for Win 7.
