Can I set up a wifi router to receive an internet signal by connecting it to a computer?

Can I set up a wifi router to recieve an internet signal by connecting it to a computer?
It seems to me that routers are designed to connect directly to the internet by programming their firmware with connection info.
I'd like to connect a computer to the internet, then connect a router to that computer.
Essentially, I want a internet signal that comes through a computer before being made wireless. Is that possible?

To connect the computer to the Internet you still need some physical component, for example a wireless USB dongle. So if you want to have the Mac connecting to the Internet and then share this connection to other devices using wireless, then you can enable Internet Sharing on the Mac and select to share its Airport (wireless) connection to the other devices (which turns the Mac into a form of access point). Then the other wireless devices can connect to the Mac and use the Mac's Internet connection, which could be a wireless USB dongle or an Ethernet connection to a cable modem.

  • Can I use my IMac OS 10.4 (old) to set up a wifi router, such as Airport Base, so I can have a wifi connection for the iPhone I plan to buy?  My IMac is not wifi capable.

Can I use my several-years-old IMac OS 10.4 to set up a wireless router, such as Aiport Base, so I can have wifi for the iPhone I plan to buy.  My IMac is not wife capable.

Yes, Airport Express Base Station connected to your Mac by ethernet will work as a bridge. Or you can connect the AE directly to your router/modem by ethernet if it's a non-wi-fi router and it will act as a relay for that.

  • I can't login into smart wifi router outside home?

    Hey.
Do I need to portforward a port for logging into my Linksys EA6500 smart wifi router from outside home? I can only login when I'm om LAN or wifi..
Another question: Can I only login to the same router using an app? Isn't there a way to login via browser?
    Thx.
    Solved!

You should be able to access your router anywhere for as long as you're able to create an account and able to associate your router properly. Have you done that? And yes, you can use a browser to access the router. For more info about the Smart Wi-fi router you have, you refer to  the links below:

  • Can I set up a second router (extreme or express) with WEP while keeping 802B,G,N on the primary router (TC)

I have a wireless temperature controller which only uses WEP security. I have my TC configured for 802.11 B,G,N which disables WEP. Can I extend or create a new wireless network which uses WEP while maintaining my current network configuration?

    Yes, this is extremely easy..
Get a wireless router or AP.. anything cheap will usually be fine.. you don't need fancy. And if it is G or B wireless then a second hand is also fine.
For a wireless router you can bridge it, if that option is available.. usually not.
So you do a sneaky work around called wan bypass.
It is easier to give you actual situation.
    TC running standard IP 10.0.1.1
Set up the WEP router with IP, 10.0.1.254 (puts it outside the range of dhcp in the TC and will never be used).
    Turn off the dhcp server.
I do suggest you set a fixed wireless channel,, so it doesn't interfere with the TC.
    eg 1, for 2.4ghz.
Then plug LAN port of the router to the LAN port of the TC by ethernet.
Voila, you have a secondary AP and can set poor security on it.
    *** DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON***
You have just reduced the security of your whole network by creating a loophole.
I would strongly recommend turn it off when you finished playing on your Wii or whatever ancient device that uses WEP.

  • How can I set up my mail account to receive mail?

I have a brand new imac i'sight 3.06 Ghz, 500GB etc. I have added my UK hotmail email account to the mail application and I am able to send email directly from the application from my hotmail mailbox, but when i press 'Get new mail' the bar flashes and shows that I am receiving mail but I cannot see it in the inbox.
    Can anyone help?
I can send email, but I cannot see email in my inbox.
    Thanks
    J

I don't have Hotmail, but generally, web based email accounts need to be set up within that account (in this case Hotmail) - you need to go to your Hotmail account and check if it can be set up as an IMAP or POP account with emails automatically being forwarded to Mail. Hopefully someone with a Hotmail account will chime in with more specific info; in the meantime, check out the options in your account there.

  • How can I set repeating sound notifications for voicemails received?

Is there a way to set a sound notification for voicemail received?  Having to constantly pick up the phone to see if there is a VM message is
annoying.  My old dumb phone had a repeating sound for VM messages received.
Can this also be done for calendar entries, as a reminder?
    TIA,
    Chris

Not sure what phone you have but you might check your Sound settings and see if there is a setting for that but if not you might Look in the Google Play Store for Apps that ring or Vibrate a notification for your Voice Mail..

  • How can I set up source IP routing

This is on a recent Macbook Pro, OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion. Maybe the question really belongs in a "networking" or "operating system" subforum.
    A Linux example is:
ip rule add priority 32700 from 10.45.37.70 table 240
ip route add default via 10.45.37.69 table 240
    ip route flush cache
It routes all packets with source address 10.45.37.70 via 10.45.37.69 as default gateway, regardless of destination address.
    Why is this needed? --->
I have a few physically tiny Wifi routers. They can only act as NAT routers, and even block connections between internally connected devices. No problem, if I need a device to act as a server (VNC, sendmail, samba, webserver...) I set up a vtun (actually any VPN would do) between the device and a VPN server on my LAN. This way, the device gets an IP address that is reachable from my entire LAN. I can walk away and access the laptop from a smartphone, for example. And I can move data between 2 laptops while on wlan.
Outgoing connections should continue to use the normal wlan gateway. If everything would use the vtun gateway, that would cause a lot of unnecessary load on the  server.
The source IP routing affects only reply packets to connections that come in via vtun VPN. The replies have the above mentioned source address that triggers the special routing. Without the special routing, the replies would be mangled by the NAT router.
I have, on a different VPN (lets call it "VPN2"), seen an alternative. This different VPN sets an additional default address, and according to a forum post I found, related to Snow Leopard, this would automatically select the best route based on source address and local links. This does not work well for me in the case of my VPN2 (everything goes down VPN2, it shouldn't), but maybe it will help in the vtun problem? Are multiple default gateways ordered in some way that affects routing?

Yes, you can SPAN multiple ports, or multiple VLANs. This will SPAN ports 5/1 through 5/5. The spaces on either side of the dash are necessary.
    monitor session 1 source interface fastethernet 5/1 - 5/5

  • Can I set up unique wifi settings at a user level?

I have an iMac on a work network that has two users.  In the past, I have been able to log in to the system via LogMeIn.  However, I am now unable.  The problem is that each user uses a different wifi connection (the other user needs to be filtered).  What I find is that when the other user logs in to their SSID, our user account defaults to try to log in to the filtered SSID.
I can think of two scenarios that would work.  First, find a network setting that would utilize only our SSID and make it the default - forgetting other networks.  Second, disabling wifi on the other user account, forcing ethernet and then keeping ours on the unfiltered SSID.
Are either of these scenarios doable in Mountain Lion - or can anyone help me think of another solution?  We have the computer set to never go to sleep or turn hard disks off, but it will require password after the display turns off.  And, it is set to wake for network access.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
Are you deploying the Quiz on a LMS? Do ask this, because for the moment Captivate is reporting to the LMS immediately after each interaction (can be a question, or a scored button, click box, Text entry box).
If you deactivate the Complete and Correct captions in the Quiz Properties panel (part Options), the submit button will get the user to the next slide. You'll have the Incorrect caption still showing up with the message (use Yes or...) to go on. Do not know why, but you cannot desactivate this from the Quiz Properties, but you can delete this Incorrect caption on the slide. Now the Submit button will get you always to the next slide.
But then the user will not have a 'clue' about which answers were correct/incorrect, because those captions do not show up. But I think this is what you want?
If the user should be able to go back, be sure to give him more than one attempt for the Quiz (Quiz Preferences). If you give only 1 attempt, he will see the Review area when going back. But this means that if you give him 2 attempts, and he goes back through the quiz twice, he has exhausted his 2 attempts (due to the way CP reports). If he goes back again, he'll see the Review text. If the number of attempts is not important, just set this number to Infinite, and the user will never see the Review text (where he learns which answers were correct/incorrect).

  • Can't set up netgear wndr4000 router on IPad

I set up a new netgear wireless router & am having problems setting it up on my ipad.  It pulls up the network name but then when I select "join" it brings me to a screen to input ip address, subnet mask, router, dns, client id - none of which can be input (won't actually insert anything).  On all of my other devices, I only had to enter the password.

It sounds like you just got to the status information screen for the connection. Do you have DHCP, BootP and Static tabs? Do the values in the fields look like valid IP addresses?

  • Can I set up my wife's new iPhone 5 w/o activating it?

i would like to set my wife's Christmas present, a new iPhone 5s before we leave for Mexico.  Then on Christmas I want to be able to activate it when I give it to her. I can't exactly activate it now as I would have to turn off her iPhone 4 now and end up blowing the surprise.  So, can i download all her settings and so forth now while NOT activating it?  And then can I activate it from Mexico?  Note: I have the Mexico share everything plan tacked on to my current share everything plan.  Thanks in advance.
    Mit

        Mit,
Great question.  What an awesome Christmas gift for your wife.  You can download everything on the phone by using her iCloud information on the phone.  You would not be able to activate the phone in Mexico as you will not be on Verizon Wireless coverage.  You can activate either before you after you get home from a wonderful vacation.

  • Firewall setting for Home Wifi Router

Got a quick question, Checking my wifi routers firewall, i see it is set to "NAT only", but gives me option for Low, medium and High.
As my Macbook's firewall is turned OFF is the NAT only setting on the router ok?
I mean if i go to a public place, i'd turn the firewall on, on the macbook, but this is my personal home wifi.
    Thanks

I don't use MTN Lion, but on Lion I keep my set to "block all incoming connections". I would set it at the sturdiest that will allow you to cnnect to the internet, unless you need to go computer to computer in your home network. I would then turn it to the max after I was done doing that.  Just my opinion, I'm sure there are plenty of peope who will give you other advice on this site, and they could be right.   ATB

  • Can I set up my wife's iPhone C with her own iCloud but share my Apple ID account?

I have had my Apple Id for quite sometime now and have lots of music and apps for my Apple devices. I FINALLY convinced my wife to get an Apple phone as well when we just upgraded our services.
Is it possible for me to set her phone up with her own iCloud account (so we don't get each others texts, photos, ect) but still share my Apple ID so she can have access to our apps and music? Also I need to set her up on a PC of her own for backups and syncing.
If this is possible, what is the best way to proceed?
Thanks for any help at all
    Wolf

If you still have this question, the answer is yes.  You can set up a separate iCloud account for her by going to Settings>iCloud on her phone and signing in with a separate Apple ID.  You can do this and still share the same ID for your iTunes account (in Settings>iTunes & App Store).  The ID you use for iCloud does not need to be the same as the ID you use for other services.  Also, to avoid getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls, make sure she signs into these services with her new iCloud ID (in Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime).
In iTunes on her PC, authorize her computer for your shared iTunes account by opening iTunes and going to Store>Authorize This Computer and signing in with the ID.  Then you should be all set.

  • Can I set-up multiple WiFi accounts on a single time capsule?

I operate a vacation rental and would like to allow guests access to my WiFi without giving them access to the secure files on my Time Capsule.  Can & how might I do this?

The info in your post suggests that you have a 1st Generation Time Capsule. Unfortunately, that version does not have a Guest Network option.
Guests will not have access to the files on your Time Capsule with your current Time Capsule unless you provide them with the Time Capsule device password.
Here, I am assuming that your device password is different than the wireless network password.
