Can I share an external hard drive across 2 machines both using Time Machine?

I have an iMac on Leopard and a MacBook on Snow Leopard and I want to use Time Machine to back up my iMac before migrating to Snow Leopard.
To do this I'm going to buy an external drive but before I buy it I want to check whether I can share this drive across my 2 machines both backing up using Time Machine.
Also from a drive capacity perspective is it sufficient that the external drive has the same capacity as the machine(s). If no then is there a multiplication factor that should be used.

Hi Paul, you'll want to partition it into 2 Partitions, & ech {artition should be at least twice te size of the drive it's backing up, so 2*iMac's drive + 2*MacBook's drive for size.

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

Hello, is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode? I can't use my AE as my main router at the moment but still want to be able to use the hard drive on the network, and the router I am using isn't capable of adding an external hard drive. I use Windows 7 and the other router is a Netgear. I have searched the communities and have not come across an answer to this question. I have tried several configurations within windows to try and see the hard drive but none have worked. I can see the hard drive when I run Airport utlities, but it cannot be seen on the network. Thanks to anyone who can help!

If you are sharing on a local LAN port forwarding is not required.

Answer is yes.. no port forwarding, mapping whatever term is used.. is needed. Port mapping is required when you cross over a NAT router.. as long as all the devices are inside a single LAN.. then no port mapping.
I assign to my Airport Extreme, do I do so with the settings of:
Service: SMB
Type: TCP
Server IP: xx.x.x.x
Port Start: 445
Port End: 445
This would not work even from WAN.. SMB is blocked by all responsible ISP.. there is simply too many unprotected windows machines out there. If they allowed SMB .. the world would be flooded with hijacked bots. And stolen data like bank accounts. SMB is not a secure protocol.
But this is not necessary on a LAN.
The problem can be Mavericks which does a terrible job presenting network drives.. The usual recommendations are to use AFP or force the connection to CIFS (ie SMB1 not 2).
If you use airport,, then use AFP.
In finder.. Go, Connect to server.
AFP://AEname or AEIPaddress. (replace with the network name of the AE or its actual IP address).
When asked for password.. type public if you did not change it or use whatever password you put.
Store the password in the keychain.

It seems that the hard drive feature is only available on the extreme and the AirPlay feature is only available on the express. If you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, the files will be copied to your hard disk and all the organization done in iPhoto09 will be carried forward to Organizer catalog. This can be done if you have enough space on your hard disk. However if you want to use Organizer solely + not create duplicate copies of your images, you can import photos directly from the Hard Disk. Ensure to write all metadata to files within iPhoto so that when the same photos are imported into Organizer, the tagging done is brought along.

That shouldn't be attempted. Unless the drive is specifically designed for it, which very few drives are, connecting it to more than one computer(which includes the base station for this purpose) at any given time through USB or FireWire can damage it.

Use the DIsk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to repartition the drive. The new partition needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
If you want to back up the contents of that drive and not use that drive for holding backups, you need to use another backup method, such as drag-copying files or cloning.

How can I backup an external hard drive connected to my mac with time capsule?

The hard drive on my IMac is 500GBytes. It is just about full. I have purchased an additional drive to attach to it permanently through the Firewire 800 interface. My plan is to move my photographs and iTunes to the attached drive. I currently use 2TB time capsule to backup my hard drive. Can I get time capsule to back up the external hard drive as well?

I assume that you are asking about Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule here, correct?
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
Open Time Machine
Click Options
Here, you will see list of items that are excluded from backups. By default, the hard drive attached to your Mac will appear here.
Click on the name of the hard drive to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button to remove the drive from the list of items that are excluded from backups
Now, the drive will be backed up along with your Mac on the next pass that Time Machine makes, and any changes that you make to the hard drive will be backed up as well in the future.

How big should my external hard drive be for me to use Time Machine?

i am a student and dont have a significant amount of files and that on my computer so how big shuld my external hard drive be?
I will be using a normal external hard drive so will i be getting the full and the important features out of time machine if i do this?

There are two questions you should ask yourself:
1. How long will it take me to fill up my internal HDD?
2. How far back chronologically do I realistically expect to have go to retrieve data?
I submit that in the vast majority of cases, a HDD of the same size as you have in your MBP will be ample. If things change, adjustments can be made well in advance. Its the very rare user that will generate multi GBs of data and file changes every session.
As an example, I have a 750GB HDD in my MBP and a 750 HDD dedicated to Time Machine. The oldest backup goes back 7 months. At the rate that I update Time Machine, I expect the Disk to be filled and start deleting old data in about 3 months. For me, that is more than sufficient.
There is another aspect of backup strategy you should consider. I would highly reccomend that you have a second external drive to store your most important files that may be duplicates of those in Time Machine. All HDD will fail. You just never know when that will happen. If your Time machine disk expires, this way you are not left in a calamitious situation.
Though some of my views may be in the minority, the final decision is always yours.

I have a USB drive attached to my base station, and wanted to access the drive remotely. My ADSL connection comes through a Router, and is then delivered to the Airport Base Station.
It's probably simple with the right boxes, and instructions. I'm not sure about either tho'

Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Did you map the drive? It won't show up in Explorer automatically like a jump drive or an external drive plugged directly into the PC will.
You didn't mention the OS you're running, but what you want to do is choose "Map a network drive" and you'll see the router listed as a network device. Click on it and you should see the external drive listed. You can map it from there.

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
