Can I share my entire drive?

I'm only able to share my G5's Home folder on my network, PCs and Mac Powerbook Pro. Can't find a way to share other folders, partitions, etc.
I ask because
a) my Macs see all files on the Windows machines
b) at work, I see my partner's G4 on the network and I have a choice of his user folder or the entire drive
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Roger

Hi. You can share other folders and drives in 10.4 with SharePoints

  • How can I share my entire iMac hard drive over a network to my Macbook Pro?

I tried setting up a network, and I was able to successfully transfer a couple of files...but some files just wont transfer to my Macbook when I try to transfer them.
What gives? It tells me on certain files that I cannot get them because I dont have correct permissions. When I command-I to get the folder/file info...I'm not even able to change priviledges to "READ & WRITE". "READ" is the only option available.
Can someone please point out what Im missing? I'm trying to transfer a large amount of files from my imac to macbook pro so that I can sell my iMac. It's not letting me transfer all of them.
    Thanks in advance everyone!

and how do I log into the other computer as an administrator? the files i want to transfer i just movies, music, documents, etc.
    Two methods:
    1) Log into the other computer using the username of an administrator on that computer
    2) Log into the other computer using the username of the account that holds the movies, music, documents, etc.

  • Can you share a hard drive with the current airport extreme

    Hey all!
I read that you can share USB drives with the new airport extreme. Can you do that with the current ones?
    Thanks,
    B

Massi65, Welcome to the discussion area!
You really should start a new thread since your question is about the new square AEBS and the thread started with a question about the previous AEBS.
With either AEBS you could wirelessly gain access to a hard drive by one of these 3 methods:
Use a hard drive with wireless networking capabilities. The drive would connect to the wireless network like any other wireless client.
Use a hard drive with an Ethernet interface. Connect the drive to the AEBS's LAN port.
Connect a hard drive via FireWire or USB to another Mac and then share the drive from that Mac.
The new square AEBS offers a new possibility. You can connect a USB drive directly to the new AEBS and share it to devices connected to the AEBS's network.
    What performance could I expect?
No one can answer this directly since no one has any of these devices to try.

  • Can i share my iCloud drive through family sharing?

I have setup family sharing and this works a treat.  I would now like to share the documents on my iCloud drive with the same people, is this possible? If so, how?

    Hi Matt,
Thanks for the quick response.  How do I share using the share feature? Do you mean email to others? Sorry haven't done this before and two of us are trying to work on the same document (at different times but in two locations).  Thanks

  • Can I share a USB drive connected to Airport Express

I know that you can with the Extreme Base Station. Just curious if a drive connected to the

    no.
airport express does not support connecting external drives to it. essentially, it's printers only.

  • How can I share my external drive?

    Hi
I have an imac G5 and an imac intel core duo, each one has an external drive, and they are connected through the network, but I can´t reach my intel core duo´s external drive from my imac G5.
The imac G5 has the tiger OS, the other one has the snow leopard.
    Someone knows anything about this?
    please help

    Hmm.
Is the G5 running Tiger? If so, this applies to Tiger and earlier: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2246
Sorry, but I've never used sharing between Tiger and Snow Leopard, so am not sure what's wrong.

  • Suddenly can't share external USB drive

I have all of my iTunes music on an external USB drive called 'iTunes_Drive', attached to my G5 iMac in the basement. For a long time, my wife would just run iTunes on the G4 iMac in the living room and play music through the Shared Libraries feature. However, this is slow to start up each day, so I came up with the idea of just sharing the external drive, and having her maintain her own library based on the music in the shared drive.
Just today, it became impossible to access this shared drive from the G4. Interestingly, when I shared a FireWire external drive with the same settings, then that drive WAS visible as an available shared folder when connecting from the G4.
Rebooting both computers hasn't changed anything. The firewall on the G5 is turned off, and it's allowing AFP, SMB and FTP sharing of the drive. The G4 CAN mount the iTunes_Drive using SMB, but iTunes doesn't recognize it as the same drive (possibly because under SMB it's called "ITUNES_DRIVE:" whereas in AFP it's "iTunes_Drive").
Is there something new in security which is preventing AFP sharing of external USB drives? Neither googling nor searching through this forum has turned up anything that helps me.
I should note that the G5 is running Leopard 10.5.1, and the G4 is running Tiger 10.4.11, and I just ran Software Update on both computers last night, with the attendant reboots this morning.

I've experienced a similar problem with my two external hard drives connected to my AirPort Extreme Base. Since installing yesterday's security update, I can no longer see either hard drive. From my Shared folder in Finder, it's now constantly in 'Connecting' mode. I've tried rebooting and checking everything to no avail.
Any help out there would be appreciated.

  • Can't share new external drive

We have a Mac Mini which is our media player. I have all the actual media on an external USB drive. The previous drive was failing, so I've now copied everything over to the new drive. The new drive has the same name as the old drive: Media Drive. As far as the Mac Mini itself goes, all is well.
However, we also access the media drive through filesharing from our other Macs. Now with the new drive, it doesn't appear in filesharing. So I went into filesharing. I removed the old Media Drive (it said it couldn't locate it, because of course it's gone). Then I added the new Media Drive. Still it doesn't appear in filesharing.
What's odd is that in the sharing settings for the media drive, I can't set user permissions. All the Read & Write, etc options are grayed out. See attached screenshot.
    Any ideas?

Thanks. Actually, I don't get that checkbox in my machine. The only thing that appears under Sharing & Permissions is "You can read and write." None of those users and privileges, not the "ignore" checkbox.
From spending a couple hours on Apple tech support just now, what I've discovered is "Fat 32." I had never heard of that in 25 years of Mac use, but what I gather is that this is an ancient MS-DOS format, and that my new hard drive remarkably shipped with this ancient format. (I guess I'm lucky they didn't format it for Morse code.) This format apparently does not support Mac filesharing, which is why this isn't working. I was looking for something to save me from copying the files over again (which takes about a week). However, it looks like I need to reformat the new drive in a modern format and then try again.

  • Can I share an entire volume (User Account) on my Powerbook with another?

I have an iBook running Tiger and two Powerbooks G4 running 10.3.9 and would like to share my user account with the two Powerbooks on an airport network. All I see however is the public folder when I access the iBook from either of the Powerbooks.

  • How to share the entire hard drive with only one group

We want to share our entire hard drive with our staff, plus share Web folders with our customers plus the staff. We'd like our customers to have no permissions at all for the share point at the root of the drive, so it won't even be presented as a volume for them to mount.
The problem is that when we make the root of the drive a share point, we need to give read-only permissions to Everyone, or we break services. Read-only for Everyone makes our drive readable by any of our customers, which is obviously not good. This seems like it would be a common task for anyone running a server with customer folders on it. Is there a way to share the whole drive with our staff, and only our staff? Thanks.

First... You are not making your boot drive the share point are you????? Only share an entire drive if the drive is ONLY used for data (not OS).
You need to make mroe than one share point.
You can have one share point which is the Data drive and another share point which is the customer folder within.
You can have share points which exist within share points.

  • Share a USB Drive ?

    Hi
I have just set up a new mini mac server, i managed to clone the os disk and then set them to raid 1 and then clone back the os from usb to the new raid mirror with no problems
Now i plugged in a new 2TB usb hard disk and formatted to HFS, this comes up in disk utilities, i mounted this....
Now how do i share the whole hard disk ? Or do i have to create seperate directories and share these ?
And whats AFS NFS ? etc ?
    Cheers
    Dave

Now how do i share the whole hard disk ? Or do i have to create seperate directories and share these ?
You can do it either way - share the entire drive, or share specific directories. Your choice.
And whats AFS NFS ? etc ?
I assume you mean 'AFP', not 'AFS', right?
There are multiple protocols used for file sharing - each developed by different companies to meet their specific needs, each have different strengths and weaknesses including client support.
NFS is the classic Network File System developed by Sun and is the standard for most UNIX environments.
SMB is Microsoft's file sharing protocol and is the standard for Windows computers.
AFP is Apple Filing Protocol developed (not surprisingly) by Apple and is the standard for Mac systems.
It's not that clear-cut, though. Most operating systems can talk multiple protocols but in general I recommend sharing the file systems via whatever the client is most comfortable with. In other words, use SMB for directories that will be shared by Windows clients, use AFP for Mac clients and NFS for UNIX clients.
Bear in mind that the options are not exclusive - it's entirely valid to share a directory via more than one protocol at a time based on the clients that will be accessing it.

  • How do I correctly share an external drive under Lion?

    Hello,
I've bought myself a new Mac Mini running Mac OS X Lion and i'm having difficulties with sharing files from an external USB hard drive with Windows users.
To cut to the chase, I can correctly share anything from the local hard drive inside the mac without any issues.  I've got an external drive enclosure with two drives installed which are picked up correctly by Lion without any issues.  The only problem occurs when I try to share them.
Windows users can see the machine on the network and can see the file shares underneath.  However they receive an error stating they can't access the share, with a message at the bottom stating that "The parameter is incorrect".  Now im not having any issues sharing the local Mac drive which is working perfectly.  I'm running an AirVideo server which is correctly serving content from the external drive, and TwonkyServer which is also serving content from this external drive over UpNP without issues.
All the Windows clients are Windows Vista or newer, so Apples changes to SMB file sharing in Lion should not be an issue here.
I say i'm having problems with sharing to Windows users.  However, I have only one Mac and no other Mac's to share with.
A couple of things for your consideration as well.  The external USB drives are formatted to NTFS and i'm using Paragon NTFS for read/write access to the drives.  I also have Sophos Antivirus installed on the Mac.
    Cheers.

Well, what do you know.  I plugged in another external drive and formatted it to HFS+ and it shared fine.
Barring some issue with Paragon NTFS interferring, it looks like Max OS X Lion can not share externally attached drives that are formatted in NTFS.
Any clever cookie have a workaround?

  • Can I share icloud drive storage between family members?

I am looking for easy offsite storage that can be easily accessed.  I have been reading a bit about the icloud drive, and it seems simple to add and open files. Can I share the storage with my husband and his computer or not?  We currently use carbonite as a backup program. Would icloud drive replace that?
    Thank you.
    Katie

iCloud Drive is tied one AppleID.  If you want to share it, all family members would have to use the same Apple ID.
The only Family Sharing Apple Supports for family members with different AppleIDs is sharing your purchases: iTunes items, iBooks, AppStore Purchases,  see:   http://www.apple.com/icloud/family-sharing/
But iCloud Drive cannot be shared between different AppleIDs, and it is also not meant to be a cloud backup. It is used to store your current working copies of your most important documents, that you need on all devices, and keep the documents updated on all devices.
