Can I share my library from a computer not on the same network?

Hey!
My family and I have always had our music on iTunes the family Mac computer.  I'm moving and just got my first macbook (woo!). Is it possible to share or move the iTunes library from the family Mac onto my computer which will not be on the same network?
Thanks!

You can't share music over different networks with homesharing. Put the content on an external drive or USB stick and import it to the other computer.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
You can share content between 2 libraries that have different ID's for the iTunes Store, yes.
You need to make sure that both libraries are using the same ID for home sharing though (from the File menu)

How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network? Thanks

You can do it manually, but it is much simpler if you use a tool such as Back To My Mac, LogMeIn, or something like that. Those programs enable you to connect to your computer through your router without you having to adjust the router settings manually.

  • Can i access my library from two hard drives at the same time?

    hello!
i have way too much music on my hard drive and would like to move some to my external drive and leave some on my local drive. that way when i'm writing papers at the cafe, i can access some music and when i'm at home, i can get it all. is this possible? if not, how should i deal with a 20 gig music file?
    thanks!

The best way to do this is to attach your eHD, then in your iTunes Preferences "Change Location" of your iTunes Music folder to the eHD; from then on all music you add will go to the eHD but what's on your HD will stay there, and iTunes will keep track of what is where.
Two things : when away from home, your eHD tracks will all have ! next to them as iTunes will not "see" them; also when you are at home, make sure the eHD is attached before you launch iTunes.
A second strategy is to move your entire iTunes Library to the eHD (read this article first : http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive). Then, on your Mac, launch iTunes with the Option key pressed down, then Create Library.. and set up a new Library with a subset of your favourite tracks you keep on your Mac. In future use the "launch iTunes with the Option key pressed down" trick, then Choose Library.., to switch between them.

  • Can I share itunes playlists from one computer to another?

Can I share itunes playlists from one computer to another?

My computer cannot run  Sharing so I don't have firsthand experience.  My reading of it is:
    1) Music sharing lets you stream (not transfer) select items, including specific playlists, between local computers on the same network.
    2) Home Sharing lets you stream or transfer media files between computers on the same network.  I don't know if this is as spacific as particular playlists, or you you have to make the playlist once the desired content is transferred.  It says media so doesn't look like it restricts transfer to specific playlists, it just makes your whole media collection accessible on another authorized computer.
You can export a playlist file from iTunes, but this is a text file listing of content, not a complete playable package.

How can I share purchased apps between 2 diff users on the same mac?

A purchased app is associated with an Apple ID. A user with a different Apple ID cannot use the app unless they also use the same Apple ID.
I cannot use my wife's apps nor she mine because each were purchased with different Apple IDs.

  • My wireless printer appears as offline on my Macbook, despite being visible on the network and printable from a Windows laptop on the same network. Was fine previously. Any thoughts?

    I have a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.
I have a wirelessly networked printer (HP PhotoSmart D110).
All worked well until a couple of months ago.
For reasons unknown, I stopped being able to print wirelessly to the printer from the Macbook. It appears as offline on the HP Photosmart utillity that pops up.
I can print to teh same printer from a Windows PC on the same network.
I have also logged onto the printer, using it's IP address and printed its test page, so obvioulsy not a printer fault as such.
The old PowerBook on the same network doesn't print to it either.
Grateful for any thoughts for quick tests or tips.
    Paul.

Nice one Ron, you're a star.
    That was a complete fix.
My preferences was slightly different, but it was the same approach.
I had 4 printers listed. Some old ones that I no longer had and the one that didn't work. I deleted all of them, then hit '+'.
It came back up, searched for new drivers, then I was able to print as per normal.
    Result.

  • WebI:Creating a minus query from data providers not using the same universe

Hi there. A client of ours wishes to use Combined Query on multiple universes in the same WebI report. So far, I have heard it is not feasible in WebI. I know it is possible in DeskI. Even the sub-query option is limited to just one universe in WebI. So, I am stuck.
Is there a workaround to creating a minus query from data providers not using the same universe in WebI?

    Hello Amit,
what are the Datasources ? Usually when you create a Sub Query you can choose a seperate Universe.
Maybe if you only see one Universe you only have the rights for this Universe ?!.

    -Seb.

  • Can Management Studio connect to a server that is on the same network but not on the same domain?

Should management studio be able to connect to an instance of an sql server that is on the same network but not on the same domain?  I am trying to have it do so but am unsuccessful, so to continue to troubleshoot what the issue might be I need to know
whether I am embarking on an exercise in futility.

    Hello,
    That's your issue!
Since you're attempting to use Windows Authentication you'll need to start the SSMS process under the domain credentials of the domain account that has access to that SQL Server. Otherwise windows is going to send you local user token which is going to quickly
be rejected as your local computer user account is not the correct domain account.
You can do this by either using shift+right-click run as different user or from the command line using RunAs /user.
In either case, if you want to use Windows Authentication you'll need to run the SSMS process as that domain user so that you can pass a valid security token.
    Edit:
I read that backwards... If it's not on any domain (or member of a workgroup) you'll have a really hard time in using windows authentication as you're limited to LOCAL users on that machine. Thus you could really only use windows auth if you were logged
in locally on that server. I'd either setup a SQL Login for this or join it to a domain.

  • ITunes can't see external library from older computer

Hey guys. I had a 2008 iMac with iTunes set up to read all of my music, movies, TV shows, etc. from an external hard drive. I recently got a new MacBook Pro and am trying to get iTunes 12.1 to see all of my existing media, with no luck.
My iMac was running Mavericks (and I guess iTunes 11?), which I assume auto-updated my older library and paths to be compatible. However, my MacBook Pro is running Yosemite (10.10.2) with iTunes 12.1. It used to be that you could just point iTunes to your existing iTunes or iTunes/Music folder and everything would instantly be available in iTunes with no problem. I've noticed in 12.1, though, that iTunes now builds its own iTunes Media folder, separates music from TV shows, movies, ringtones, etc., and has an iTunes library file in addition to several other database sidecar files.
My question is, how the **** do I get iTunes to just see my existing media? When I try pointing iTunes to the external HD, it creates an all new iTunes Media folder with db files in it. If I create that folder myself, it creates its own subfolder with existing db files. Even then, the db files don't actually point to any of my music, but rather to an empty library.
I've tried "add to library", but instead of just adding the info for accessibility, like it used to do, iTunes is actually copying every one of my files into the new folder. Given how huge my library is, I don't have the time or HD space for iTunes to copy and paste what's already there.
Any suggestions? I just want to point iTunes to my already existing files and folders from the previous version of iTunes without duplicating or losing anything.

I have not updated iTunes in a long time.  While I cannot say that iTunes 12 would not have problems opening an iTunes 2 library generally a newer version can open any older version library, but not the other way around.  Are you trying to open an iTunes 2 library?
As far as iTunes and the option key thing is concerned the library is a file called "iTunes Library.itl" and it is located in the iTunes folder, not the media folder.  A media folder is only a bunch of media files and not a library, the way a pile of books on an empty city block is not a city library.  If you do not have that file then you do not have a structured library and will have to build one from scratch with your media files.  Sometimes people put only media on an external drive and leave the rest of iTunes which makes up the complete library on the internal drive.  You need to recover that part (basically your iTunes folder) and replace the iTunes folder on your computer with it.  It has the .itl file containing all the information pointing to those files on the external drive.

  • Can i share a library from old account to new one?

My daughter wants to start her own itunes account but wants to keep library from my account. How can we do this plz?

I haven't figured out yet where the rest of the music is being stored on the old computer...
    Do this.
On the old computer, go to iTunes menu File -> Library -> Organize library and tick Consolidate.
Then follow the rest of this post.
I have put the music files from MyMusic onto the new machine
Copy the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder from the old computer to the new computer.
Dont copy just the music files.
and found out how to export the playlists.
Don't ase your time exporting playlists. Do as I suggest above and everything will be there. You need do nothing else.
