Can I share my personal hotspot with a "wifi only iPad mini" or does ithe ipad have to be wifi   cellular device? I'm using an iPhone 5 with ios7.2

I am about to buy an ipad mini for my daughter, with wifi only capability & wondered if I was able to share my internet connection via my personal hotspot on this device. I know that you can on an ipad with wifi + cellular device, but wondered how it worked for the wifi only model. I have an iphone 5 ios7.2 & would be using my personal hotspot from this to share with the ipad mini in car journeys etc. The wifi obviously is great when at home. Thanks for any advice or comments.

Thank you so much, a direct answer on something Ive been trying to get an answer for all morning. ipad mini with wifi only, is capable of sharing a personal hotspot on my iphone 5, but you think that in some cases it can be expensive. My provider insists that my personal hotspot sharing is free. I am with 3. Problem solved.

I doubt the phone is locked to GCI in any way
Well, you're wrong, & in fact not only is it locked, GCI does not offer unlocking for iPhones.
Fact is your post won't help the OP.
And you are 100% sure its locked to them? How can you know this? While GCI does not offer unlocking that does not mean the phone is actually locked to it. Get off your high horse.
Its possible the original owner had an unlocked phone. he was using with GCI. Or that GCI doesn't actually have locked phones. Seeing as they don't even have their own infrastructure but instead use AT&T's I doubt they'd have iPhones specifically locked to them and that would be the reason they do not offer unlocking (because there's nothing for them to unlock). And just to clarify, I'm not saying for a fact its not locked to them. It very well maybe be, but without knowing more about the phone and going by the fact GCI uses AT&T infrastrucure its possible its not locked. But here's no way to say for sure either way.
Trying a Sim card from AT&T or another carrier might just help the OP if its actually unlocked or locked to AT&T rather than GCI.

  • Can I share my personal hotspot to ethernet devices using a laptop as a bridge?

I have an iPhone 4 on 3 UK, with unlimited data and unlimited tethering. I also have an LG smart tv, but no Wifi dongle with it, just standard RJ45 ethernet port.
Can I use my iPhone as a hotspot, connected to my laptop either via Wifi or USB, and set up an Ad-hoc network on the laptop to allow my tv internet access via ethernet cable? The laptop is running on windows 7 if that makes any difference.

I would like to create a similar setup using an iPhone 5, a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion and an Apple TV3. I have tried connecting the Mini to the iphone by wifi and sharing the connection to the ATV via ethernet but it didn't work. It will work if the ATV connects directly to the iPhone but that is slow and needs a lot of buffering to play 1080p movies from itunes.
Is there something else I need to do to make an ethernet connection work?

  • I just updated my iPhone 4s iOS to iOS 8 and but can no longer find personal hotspot, How and where can I find it on my iPhone 4s

I just updated my iPhone 4s iOS to iOS 8 and but can no longer find personal hotspot, How and where can I find it on my iPhone 4s.
Usually I share my internet with other device with ios7 but now that I have ios8 on my iPhone 4s I can no longer find the personal hotspot. How can I share internet with other device using ios8 on my iPhone 4s?
    THanks

Settings>Cellular>Personal Hotspot. The carrier has to support this for you. This is where you should find the setting to turn it on or off.

  • How can I set up personal hotspot on iPad 3

How can I set up personal hotspot on iPad 3, I use 3G services from Etisalat  SIM

If your carrier supports the personal hotspot on the iPad (and some carriers only support it on the iPhone) then it should appear in Settings > General > Cellular Data > Personal Hotspot - if it doesn't appear then contact your carrier in case they don't support it or it might be an extra fee/subscription with them

    Hey there arunvdi,
It sounds like you are unable to connect to the Wi-Fi created by your Personal Hotspot. I recommend these troubleshooting steps from the article named:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Personal Hotspot
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2756
Try disabling and reenabling Personal Hotspot from Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    Wi-Fi troubleshooting
If you encounter an issue using Personal Hotspot with other Wi-Fi devices, try the following:
    Turn Personal Hotspot off.
Verify Wi-Fi is on in Settings > Wi-Fi.
    Turn Personal Hotspot back on.
If another device is unable to join your Wi-Fi network, ensure that the user enters the Wi-Fi password correctly. If the device cannot see your Wi-Fi network, verify your device name.
Note: Windows may not properly display a device name that uses non-ASCII characters.
Verify how many devices are currently using your Personal Hotspot. Depending on your wireless carrier and, the maximum number of Wi-Fi connections may be limited to three at one time.
If the other device still cannot connect, try turning Wi-Fi off and on again on the device. Verify that your device can see other Wi-Fi networks.
Note: If you see an "Unable to Join" or timeout error when trying to connect a device using Wi-Fi, ensure that you remain on the Personal Hotspot screen until the first device connects. After a device has connected, you can leave the Personal Hotspot screen and use your phone normally. Your device will automatically stop broadcasting using Wi-Fi if you put your device to sleep or after 90 seconds elapse with no devices connected using Wi-Fi. You can start broadcasting your Wi-Fi network again by tapping Settings > Personal Hotspot.
If none of the previous steps resolves your issue, restore the iPhone.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

i'm currently using 3gs. My 'Personal Hotspot' option suddenly dissapear from my 'Settings'. How can i get my 'Personal Hotspot' option back?

The iOS5 upgrade for the iphone allowed network operators to control the availability of the 'personal hotspot' feature. If your operator is one of those who charge extra for tethering (and most do) then by upgrading to ios5 you've facilitated them to remove the option for you.
Apple bowed to the demands of the opertators on this one.
I am with Tesco(O2) and as soon as I upgraded to ios5 I lost the 'personal hotspot' option.
I have the last laugh though; They cant control my Android phone so I put the Tesco mobile sim into that when I want to use tethering.
Get an Android phone or if you're in the UK use Three mobile who allow tethering.

  • I can't find my personal hotspot

I can't find my personal hotspot in my iPhone

Your carrier has to explicitly support it and you generally have to pay for a tethering plan. Do they and do you?
Here is a list of supported carriers around the world with information on which ones support the Personal Hotspot feature: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937

Do you pay for a tethering plan? This is a feature that has to be activated by your carrier and is generally NOT free.

  • Hi I want to know how can I activate my personal hotspot?

Hi I want to know how can I activate my personal hotspot?

Contact your carrier and ask to have that feature provisioned on your account (at an extra monthly fee, of course).  Whether or not you actually have hotspot enabled is a carrier service feature.  Once your account supports it, you can use it on the phone.

  • Can somebody tell me where can I find the "Personal Hotspot" in the new version of iOS 8?

    Hi dears,
it has been noticed that the personal hotspot feature has been missed from the iOS 8. It was availbe in the cellular data in the setting in the previous ios but after I updated to the latest version i could not find it for my iPad Air. However, for my iPhone 4s it is still there after update.
Seeking your help and appreciate in advance.

Does your carrier support that feature on the iPad?

No. Return it and get your money back if still within the 30 day return window. All US iPhones are carrier locked and cannot be officially unlocked.
