Can I shoot slow motion on HVX-200 keeping 1080i/24P without FCP Conversion

I've been reading many threads, but haven't figured if you can actually shoot true 1080i/24P on my HVX-200 with menu frame rate set to 60fps/shutter 60fps. The times I've tried it shows 24P in the menu frame rate and will not playback on the P2 in true slow motion so I can import into FCP slow motion at 1080i/24P without conversion.
From everything I've seen it shows it has to be in 720/24P with menu frame rate at 60fps/shutter 60fps which will let it playback on the P2 in slow motion.
Any suggestions? We want to shoot everything in 1080i/24P but see instant playback in slow motion without conversion mostly for music videos.
Thanks, Paul

You can't. 720p is the only format that is 60fps. 1080i is 30fps.

Correct. You can only shoot in-camera slow motion at 720p60, using the 24p setting. And this is also the way to shoot so you can slow it down later with Cinema Tools or in FCP. It must be 720p60. Again, 1080i is 30fps only. Even 1080p...30fps with DVCPRO HD.
Any suggestions? We want to shoot everything in 1080i/24P but see instant playback in slow motion without conversion mostly for music videos.
Sorry, if you want to shoot smooth slow motion, you need to shoot 720p. If you must shoot 1080p, then you need to invest in good post slow-motion options, like Twixtor.

  • Can I go slow motion in a video?

Is there a way to view videos taken on my iPad in slow motion or frame by frame?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You can do this FX within FCE by using color matte with a mask in multiply composite mode. A lot of keyframing to position/animate de mask over each frame.

  • How can I make slow motion work in iMovie 10.0.2?

Is there a way to make effects such as slow motion work in iMovie 10.0.2 (OSX 10.9.2)? In Modify drop down, Slow Motion is black, but the speed options are grayed out. Same with Fast Forward, Instant Replay, and Rewind. Anyone know why some capabilities were delted with the new versions of iMovie?

    Jim,
The menu options (slo mo, fast wd, instant replay, rewind) are black; however, once I select one of these, all the speed options are gray and ineffective. Right click of a clip does not have a "show speed editor." And I am working in the timeline and not the event browser. Any other suggestions? Do we both have the same version (10.0.2)?

  • Problem recording live feed HVX-200 in 1080/24p on my computer

    Hey,
I have been able to get a live feed from my HVX 200 onto the MacBook Pro at the Apple Store. I set the digitize tool to non-controllable device and to the corresponding codec selected on the camera and it works perfectly fine. When I try this on my laptop I can't get it to work. FCP sees my camera when both are set to DV NTSC, but any of the DVCPRO HD settings don't work. I feel like I have tried everyting, is there anything else anyone can suggest to solve this problem?

  • Final Cut Pro 7: Split a clip into sections so I can add part slow-motion

The questions in the question tbh. I just have a clip  which i want to slow down part of but i found the only way to do this is to split the clip and then slow down the section. but i dont know how to split it?

While you're visiting the built-in manual system, look up the razor blade tool.

  • Shoot 720p 60 for Slow Motion on PAL DVD . . ?

Ever since I became interested in shooting slow motion, I've been quite envious of NTSC users because they enjoy 30 fps rather than PAL's juddering 25 fps.
Interesting to note that the +'grass is always greener'+ syndrome has kicked in though. A great many NTSC video makers are desperate to achieve the +'film look'+ while many over here, want smoother footage.
Personally, I fail to understand why anyone would want juddery footage, but then I detest the wavy camera phase that film makers are going through at the moment. Now I'm showing my age.
With the galloping technical advance of 'prosumer' camcorders, we now have a choice of formats and this has led me to wonder whether shooting in 720p 60 fps and then converting this to PAL DV could achieve a nicer slow motion than shooting 720p 50 fps.
I'm not in a position to run any trial just at the moment, but the idea's been in my head for a while now, and I wondered if anyone has any thoughts or experience on this.
Because of the nature of my subject, I cannot predict with much accuracy which scenes will be required at normal speed and which will be slow, so I shoot everything at 50 fps and then I can choose.
+PS. I'm not very technically minded so forgive me If I've overlooked some obvious flaw!+
I should add (although it's surely obvious) that I shoot in HD in an attempt to 'future proof' my footage. The vast majority of my audience has only recently converted to DVD, let alone HD.

Sorry, did kind of lack technical details but then there are precious few to consider, after all, overcranking (running a camera at a higher recording framerate than the intended playback framerate) has been the way this has been done for years, and the new video cameras that allow 60p recording make an ideal poor man's high speed camera, especially for 24p and 25p playback. Also its much easier just to tell folks what they want to hear

  • Step by Step, what's the best way to shoot slow-mo in HD?

I've read so many articles on here about doing slow motion shooting in final cut but everyone of them left out some important details.
i wanted to see if anyone could give me a step by step on how the best way to shoot something in slow motion in HD would be?
i'm probably planning on just doing this in 720 instead of 1080, but i don't want that to begin to be the topic of discussion, just how how to do slow motion.
some things i want to know about it:
-what is a good shutter speed for this to make the movement look as smooth as possible
-how many frames per second should i shoot? (my camera only goes up to 60fps)
-should i use Cinema Tools in any way?
-any adjustments i might need to do to the timeline in final cut when i drop it in there?
-also, i'd want my whole project video to be done in 720/24p, but i'm guessing for the one shot i want in slow motion i'd have to shoot 720/60p. what do i need to do to get the 60fps footage to work right in a timeline set for 24fps?
if you can't answer all of them, just some help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

-what is a good shutter speed for this to make the movement look as smooth as possible< </div>
that's a tough call because the shutter speed will be determined by three things, your ability to understand what we tell you here, yoru photo subject, and the lighting conditions and ability to control them.
-how many frames per second should i shoot? (my camera only goes up to 60fps)< </div>
You can stop there, 60 is not nearly enough to achieve "smooth as possible" slow motion. You need at least 90 frames per second, 120 is even better, 180 is fabulous. You can research "overcranking," temporal resolution, and shooting slow motion for may hours on google.
Post processing a video clip using optical flow is not a viable solution for most subjects. You must consider renting a camera that will do the job properly. If 60 fps is all you're willing or able to shoot, then you must diminish your expectations and carefully consider your photo subject.

  • Hvx-200 questions

I've been reading all your really helpful posts on apple.com; I hope you don't mind me emailing you like this but I have a couple specific questions...
I'll be shooting a 30 min film that will ultimately be delivered on DVD and I might get a print of it made...I will be shooting on a panasonic hvx-200 because it is available for free to me...I have a g5 dual, 2 ghz with FCP5, which I will use to edit...
The camera doesn't have any of the p2 cards yet, so I understand that I have to shoot DVsp @ 480i - is that right?
Considering all this, in everyone's opinion, what would be the 'best' mode for me to shoot with on the hvx-200...'best' meaning easiest digitizing - can I capture via firewire right out of the camera? and as headache free a workflow as possible in final cut. I want to shoot in 24p mode for the look, but I've read in some of the posts that that if delivery is 29.7, shooting in 24p can be a mistake...any help or advice anyone can provide would be appreciated!
    Thanks

What many are doing is to use a pb and capture direct to disc on location via fw.
There are a couple of other options as well, I beleive.
The Firestore device and another called CinePorter. Both fw hd recorders.
Capturing using 24p will save you quite a bit of disc space.
Also, with the footage that I've had play with from this camera there is absolutely no advantage in shooting 1080, shoot in 720 and if you want to up res then use the scaling in fcp or even qt. Either of these produces an image that is superior to the interpolation going on in camera.

  • Problem slowing down Sony FS-700 slow motion video

Now that I've had to use third party software (another topic for another day) to get my slow motion footage onto my computer, I want to slow it down even further.  I can shoot 120, 240, 480 or 960 fps on my camera and it lays it down to my card as 60fps video.  Obviously, the image quality degrades each time a step up the frame rate while shooting slow motion.  My thought is to thak my video shot at 240fps (recorded as 60fps) and place it on a 30fps timelined, thus doubling the slow motion effect, yet keeping the image quality higher and preserving each individual, uniqued frame of video.  I've tried several different ways of doing this but I keep getting the same result.  When I change the speed to 50% on the timeline, I get the frame blending effect (1 - 12 - 2 - 23 - 3 - 34.)  When I turn the frame blending effect off, every other frame is duplicated.  In other words, when I click through the video frame by frame, they play like so...  1 - 11 - 2 - 22 -3 - 33.  That's a long way to go to say that I need help dropping 60fps video onto a 30fps timeline and preserving each and every complete frame.  When I use it in my 30fps project, I will double the slow motion effect while maintaining the higher image quality of the lower setting.  I've been editing on FCP for years and I'm sure I'm missing something really simple.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the cam output is 60p, convert it to ProRes first, then open up the file in Cinema Tools and conform it to 30p (or 24p).
When played on a 30p (29.97) timeline, the file will play at 1/2 the speed of the 60p original file with all frames intact.
Something to keep in mind - Cinema Tools changes the file you bring in (destructive edit) so don't do this on the original.
    Best,

  • Slow motion hvx 200

    hi
have been out testing with the hvx 200 trying to get a slow dreamy effect in camare. whats the right way to go about it.
we chage the frame rate to 32 37 50 what the hvx 200 would let us do and the thing is all of the above came out as 50fps in fcp apart from 25 which came out as 25 fps. we are not recording to p2 card but to a firestore and i belive we don't have to do any thing there or am i wrong!
ok taking the fottage into motion and using timeramp is one great way to go but in camare is all ways best. any tips would be great to recive on how to do it.
    cheers
    trevor with a bad cold

Are you trying variable frame rates on the same drive (firestore)? If so, I think you have to shoot your slow mo stuff on to the firestore then off load the footage and switch back when you have what you need.
...If I read your question right.

  • Can the iPhone 4 shoot video in slow motion?

Can the iphone 4 shoot in slow mo? This video says they shot it in slow motion but I don't think it can?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rV0tzYx8Gk

    This question is too funny...
Nothing can shoot in slow motion (since things always occur in real time). You can only *play back* a video in slow motion (i.e., reduced frame rate).....

  • HVX footage shot at 720p50 for slow motion...how do i???

    Hi
I'm shooting some test slo-mo footage on my HVX (PAL).
I've shot as 720p and a frame rate of 50 and when I import it into FCP the footage shows 50 frames per second now how do I get that into a 25 frames per second time line and thus in slow motion?
    Hope someone can help!

Ok figured this out. Use cinema tools and conform footage to 25fps.

  • Difference Between 720p30pn and 720p30p on HVX-200 for Music Video Shoot

I'm shooting a music video on the HVX-200. I'm new to the camera and the manual offers little explanation as to the difference/advantages/disadvantages between 720p30pn and 720p30p recording format. I want to shoot VFR (variable frame rates) and mix it with the footage which I think only works with the 720p30p recording format.
Does anyone know the differences/advantages/disadvantages of 720p30pn and 720p30p?
As I'm going for the "film look" of 24fps, which setting on the camera do I use? I'm assuming that I use the 720p30 recording format setting and not the 720p24 as I'm obviously not outputting to film, but then again, I could be wrong.
I do know when I was testing the P2 workflow that when I was doing the VFR (variable frame rate), it was unplayable even with rendering on FCP 5.1. I'm sure I had some funky disconnect between the recording frame rate and sequence settings on FCP. Does anyone know which recording format works integrating both footage shot at 1x and variable and what is the corresponding sequence setup settings on FCP?
    Thanks for the help.

Why not shoot 720/24pNative for the "film look."
With the default frame setting in the video or the film mode?
You will mimic part of the "film look" out of the cam rather than addressing it in post, and you increase the amount of footage that can be recorded to a p2 card by recording only 24 frames rather than an over 60 recording.
Play with the scene files for the look you want to add to the "film look."
Remember that the shallow DOF characteristic of the "film look" can't be readily achieved with a stock HVX200.

  • How can I get my slow motion shot to FCP

    Hi
I shoot in DVCPRO HD 720p 50 @ 50FPS, how can i import to the FCP to get the slow motion? If i shoot in High frame rate, 720p 25 or 50 is better?
    Thanks

Ah...see, if you said that at the Cow...
Let's see if Cinema Tools will do it.
OK...on your capture scratch drive, locate that clip and DUPLICATE IT. This is important, as you will now be changing the clip forever. Open Cinema Tools...cancel the Database query. Now...Open the clip...FILE>Open. When it is open, to to the CLIP menu and select CONFORM. See if you can conform the 50p clip to a 25P clip. Not having access to a PAL clip, I don't know if this will work...but it is worth a try.

  • How can I flip my iphone videos on my PC? My videos from my iphone are horrible when I transfer them to my PC. How can I improve the video on my PC? Can I just convert the files to WMV? When the video plays the speed is off, it's half slow-motion

My videos from my iphone are horrible when I transfer them to my PC. How can I improve the video on my PC? Can I just convert the files to WMV? When the video plays the speed is off, it's half slow-motion and staggers into normal play. The clips are slightly cut as well, the clips do not roll continuously.  I'm taling about videos that are no more than 2 minutes long.  I'm frustrated and I could really use some advice-my kids basketball games is what I'm recording and I'm trying to send them to my family (they are not very tech savvy). Thanks

Not it's only function but one for which it was most admirably suited, which is why I really hope someone can find a work around. I am hoping my post to the Apple feedback may prompt a useful response from Apple and I live in hope that my post here will elicit a useful response from another user. I did not miss the the text at the top of the feedback form but you presumably missed my initial text, 'someone here can explain' or my subsequent 'work around from another user'
Just in case anyone reading this has a large collection of music videos, video podcasts or iTunes U then DO NOT upgrade your iPad to iOS 5. If you are considering purchasing the iPad as a useful mobile device to experience these media organised in your iTunes please don't as you will be wasting your money. (unless someone on this forum knows of a way to undo the mess created by those infallible folks at Apple)
Yes I know it does other things but the purpose I bought it for doesn't work anymore
