Can I, should I upgrade to GB3?

Okay, iLife 'o6 is available with GB 3. I got my iMac g5 this summer and have been working with GB2. It's unlikely I will be getting an Intel-chip based Mac in the near future. What is the processing of upgrading to GB3? When you upgrade how does that affect all the work you;ve done in GB2?

What is the processing of upgrading
to GB3?
You buy iLife '06 and install it.
When you upgrade how does that affect all the
work you;ve done in GB2?
It shouldn't, GB2 files will open in GB3. GB3 files will not open in GB2.
Unless you're interested in Podcasting,. there's very little that's new for musicians, though if you're interested in all the iLife apps, you certainly can't beat the price.

    Can you:
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Should you upgrade is your decision. If you don't need the advanced features of Mavericks, then there is no reason to upgrade. If you don't use applications that require Mavericks to upgrade, then you don't need to upgrade.
Note that beyond Snow Leopard you won't be able to run PPC-only applications such as Office 2004.

I have an IMac purchased in 5/2009 and am currently running OS x Lion10.7.5.  Can I  / should I upgrade to OS X Mountian Lion ?

As some function of iCloud are only available in Mountain Lion, why not?
You can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

  • I bought this MacBook Pro 15.4" 1.83 GHz MA463LL/A with 2gb of RAM for real cheap on eBay because I'm poor and can't afford a new MACBOOK PRO and was wondering what everyone thinks about these laptops and what can and should I upgrade when I get money?

I bought this older MACBOOK PRO 15.4" 1.83 GHz with 2gb of RAM and Leopard 10.5 on eBay for real cheap because I don't have the money to buy a new one like I would like to  do, and it comes with a disk to upgrade the OS to 10.6 and I was wondering what all I can and should upgrade (short of the whole computer) as I have the money to do so? Or did I just get really hosed?

You have the original Core Duo model. 2 GBs is the most RAM you can install, so the only thing you could upgrade would be the hard drive. Doing so is not a trivial task but you can find suitable hard drives and installation tutorials at OWC.
Since yours is a Core Duo model you can upgrade OS X to Snow Leopard, but not to Lion which requires a Core 2 Duo or better.

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

We can't tell you what to do. Go to Apple's website and inform yourself of Mountain Lion's features to determine if it would benefit you to upgrade. Upgrading isn't mandatory nor always the best thing to do. If Snow Leopard serves all your needs well, then there is no need to upgrade unless you want certain features that would require upgrading. For example, if you want to use iCloud, then you have to upgrade because iCloud is not available for Snow Leopard.

  • Where can I purchase an upgraded GPU for my PM G5? What card should I get?

I don't know much about Macs but I need to purchase an upgraded video card for somebody in our graphic design department.
Can I purchase an upgraded video card directly through Apple or is there another preferred vendor somebody here can recommend?
I read that the ATI 4870 is likely the best video card available for the Mac at this point in time, can somebody confirm this or tell me what else I should opt for?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello again, The hatter.
Although OP does specifically mention ATI 4870, and although Apple sells ATI 4870, it seems to me that the Apple 4870 product page
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A
does NOT assure OP of compatibility with his Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 (Original) from August 2006.
      http://support.apple.com/kb/SP30
I am not knowledgeable in these specifics. Perhaps you know the answer to these questions.
    (1) Can the ATI 4870 work with OP's August 2006 QuadCore MacPro, or does he need some different upgrade-video card?
    (2) Should OP be looking for a ATI Radeon X1900 XT or NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 (or equivalents) rather than ATI 4870 to upgrade his August 2006 QuadCore MacPro's video card?

Yes. You should be fine with Snow Leopard, but Lion requires a minimum of 2 GBs of RAM. If you upgrade to Lion I would first upgrade your RAM to at least 4 GBs if your model supports it. Also, see:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

It is best to wait till there is a 10.9.1 update as new OS X systems always cause problems to some installations. Better not to risk losing data unless you have a bootable clone that enables you to revert to the original (pre upgrade) state. Haste makes waste.

  • Browser lagging? Should I upgrade the OS? how can I do that?

    Hello,
I'm actually not an expert in Blackberries. I switched from the 9790 to my Torch. Because the batteries in the 9790 dies quickly when browsing and the torch's battery is great when I'm browsing with 3G on. It could stay up for a day unlike the 9790 when browsing for 3 hours straight it's dead.
Anyway, I'm having huge amount of lag when browsing non ”mobilized” websites. It`s not slow to load. But it`s lagglng. I've browsed around the internet for solutions and people say that I should upgrade my OS. So how do I do this? I think I'm currently in OS 7. If I update, will I loose my bbm and phone contacts? If so, how could I bring them back?
    Thanks
I apologize for my bad english. I am not a native english speaker

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
The simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):
    1) Make sure you have a current and complete backup of your BB...you can find complete instructions via the link in my auto-sig below.
    2) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages
    3) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed
    http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html
    4) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.
    5) Delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
6a) For changing your installed BB OS level (upgrade or downgrade), you can launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC.
6b) Or, for reloading your currently installed BB OS level as well as for changing it, bypass the Desktop Software and use LOADER.EXE directly, by proceeding to step 2 in this process:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC.
If, during the processes of 6a or 6b, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
You may also want to try the "Bare Bones OS Reload Procedure" to attempt to narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Upgrade to GB3 results in "fried" JamPacks

got complete JamPacks and they ran fine with GB2. Upgraded to GB3, and almost all loops are missing, almost all categories are greyed out, (when I click "all drums" there are only 4 loops).
So, short of re-installing all my JamPacks, is there a way to tell GB3 where to find them??

I am having the same problem but it doesnt affect all songs. for example song1 wont have access to most loops. buttons are greyed out. I can open song2 or create a new song and all loops are available again. I have moved loop folders around. I have reindexed, I have deleted the plist and cs files. I have tried everything that I can find info on here and still cant get song1 to see all loops.
There seem to be many bugs with GB3 and Apple needs to fix them quickly. I am really missing my pc with sony acid right now.

  • Can't get past "Upgrade to iTunes 10" ad

I recently searched Google for pre-done music mixes to listen to when I run. I found a site that has several mixes. I chose a "Classic Rock" mix. There was a link to click that took me to the iTunes Store, where I could preview the songs. I bought the mix -- it was all good. Then a few days ago I went to the same site, selected another running music mix, and clicked on the link that should have taken me to the iTunes store to preview the songs. BUT, I ended up on a page that advertises iTunes 10, with a link to click to download it. I can't download iTunes 10 with the OS I have, but that's beside the point. I simply can't get to the list of songs in the music mix/can't preview the songs. I've spent 3 days going back and forth with someone in iTunes Support, and he can't figure it out. What he did say was when he goes through all the steps I did, starting on the running music website, he also gets the "ad" page for iTunes 10, but there a place to click for "Download" AND a place to click for "Don't Download." I don't have a "Don't Download" button.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

You don't need a new computer. If you just want to purchase - which has nothing to do with the original question in this thread which, BTW, is almost six months old - you probably just need iTunes 9.2.1 which you can get if you upgrade your system to Mac OS X 10.4.11. If you want full functionality with the iTunes Store, you can probably just upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 which will allow you to run iTunes 10.
And no, no one from Apple is going to be listening in this old thread, and they wouldn't reply if they were since these forums are for user-to-user assistance. I can't comment on your "customer service" since I have no idea what routes you pursued in an attempt to find a solution to your difficulties.
    Regards.

  • I regularly have 15 MB of Available Memory - Should I upgrade or is there an issue I should solve first? EtreCheck report pasted below

    Hello,
My MacBook is running super slow. I downloaded Memory Clean from the App Store and I regularly have 15MB or free memory available.
In Activity Monitor I usually see the following:
    ~800 MB kernel_task
    ~500 MB softwareupdated
    ~500 MB Image Capture Extension
    In Console, I see mdworker.bundle errors attributed to UID's: 501, 503, 1422
My current UID from what I can tell is 502. Other UID's left over from various upgrades are 89, 99, 235.
Lastly, Drive Genius is giving me a Drive Integrity Warning. But I can't create a bootable clone.
I have no idea if the above problems are related. I'd like to think I just run a lot of stuff that eats my memory and upgrading the RAM would be the easy path. What say you all?
