Can I somehow set Firefox as default so windows don't open in IE?

I prefer to use Firefox - it is far easier to use and can do so MUCH more. Whenever I select a link in a document, on-line, whatever, my PC always opens new links with IE. Even the confirmation of my Firefox Help account opened in IE. I want to somehow force my PC to open ONLY in Firefox. Help!

Please see this support article on [[How to make Firefox the default browser]].

  • After uninstalling nightly, I can no longer set firefox as default browser for email links and they no longer open.

When I try to change the default firefox protocols in windows, only the nightly shows and I can not unclick it. When I attempt to click on a link in an email (Windows Live) I get "Class not registered"
I presently have IE set as my default because it is the only possible way to open email links.

You can install both win32 and win64 Firefox Nightly builds on a 64-bit Windows computer. As you should know, all Firefox nightly builds are intended for testing only. If you downloaded your Firefox nightly build from http://nightly.mozilla.org/ then you got the win32 installer. (win64 installers are available from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-central/ and possibly elsewhere: [http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=12694481#p12694481 ref.])
Anyway, the bug report I referred to earlier ([https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=870312 Bug 870312] - Installing Nightly causes "Class not registered" error on click on link in other apps after uninstall) fits your issue ("broken" uninstaller). It was triaged as a "Shell Integration" Firefox bug for x86_64 Windows 8.
Whether you had the 32-bit or 64-bit Firefox nightly installed, you can try reinstalling a more recent build of that, and then uninstall it again. That worked for a Windows user who had problems uninstalling Firefox Nightly x64 as reported in this thread:
If that doesn't work, also try reinstalling Firefox 25, to see if that helps matters.
I'm not the best person to help you, though, since I'm not testing Firefox nightly on my Win7 x64 computer. Hopefully someone will be along that can help you better, or you could try on the MozillaZine Firefox Builds forum (it's linked from the nightly.mozilla.org page).

  • How to set Firefox as default browser in Mac OS X via console

I would like to set Firefox as default browser via the command line in Mac OS X. The goal is to enforce Firefox as default browser for all users of a Mac OS X system by means of a login script. I am also looking for a way to add Firefox to the user's dock from a login script.

Launch Safari and open its preferences. You set the default browser there.
Not very logical is it? I think a Microsoft plant came up with that one.

  • New windows don't open on top of each other in Firefox. How can I make that happen?

New windows don't open on top of each other in Firefox. How can I make that happen? That is, every time I open a new window, it won't open on top of the old window, and instead is positioned to the right of it. I'm on a mac. Please help.

I see. I'm not aware of how to fix this in Firefox. Usually you want to tweak your Winow Manager preferences for opening new windows.
    Example: sawfish preferences for Linux.
Since Mac OS X doesn't have any preferences, you have to use Applescript or another technique. I found [http://amitp.blogspot.com/2006/08/mac-os-x-window-management-spooky.html Spooky], maybe there are others. • Every time I reboot, Safari has reverted to my default browser, despite setting Firefox as default (both with Firefox and Safari) in my previous session. What else can I try?

OCCASIONALLY I can hear my laptop fan whirring excessively when using the web. If it happened too much, I've quit the browser and the laptop soon cools off. This started when using Safari, and was why I thought I'd try Firefox for a while. Apart from the default browser issue, I've found Firefox easier to use and more reliable. I can't say for sure that this 'overheat' issue has never happened with Firefox since I installed it.

Can't set Firefox as my default browser even after following the steps outlined in Firefox support. Operating Firefox on Snow Leopard with Windows 7 running under Parallels. Clicking on links in emails, etc. always opens IE 8 in Windows instead of Firefox on the Mac

I had the same problem, I just forgot how to fix it. I did it once a while ago but just recently the problem had returned. The first link in vineelreddyp's post solved the problem for me.
Just as an FYI for people, when OSX does software updates it includes Safari updates. When it completes a Safari update it resets all the Safari settings (they recently upgraded to Safari 5.0), including default browser.
So anyway, FYI about that. ;-)

  • I set Firefox as default browser, and now IE is gone. How do I get it back?

I downloaded the current version of Foxfire and set it as my default browser. I need to apply for work and many companies only support IE. I clicked on IE and only Foxfire opens on that icon. I can't find my IE, my bookmarks there are gone and I can't apply for the jobs! I took Firefox off as default browser, but it didn't bring back the IE. I am very unhappy at this point and need help!
    == This happened ==

== when I set Firefox as my default browser

After a lot of messing around with settings, and different windows, I found that it's only the desktop icons that are defaulting to open the Firefox browser. If you go to your program list, and open IE there, it works and all the bookmark info is still there.

  • How set firefox as default youtube viewer

When I click a youtube link in a document IE starts and opens the video. How can I make Firefox the default?

Ok, I tried that and, for the record, it did nothing to fix my problem. Here's what did fix it: I did some digging through the registry, along with a lot of Googling, and found the entry that was causing the problem -
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\firefox.exe\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\''{the path to an old (and since uninstalled) version of}''\\firefox.exe\" \"%1\""
It seems that many of these newer Windows features can't handle it when you try to keep more than one version of a program installed - or even if you install two unrelated programs that happen to have the same executable name. Once I pointed this entry to my current installation of Firefox, everything started working the way it should - although I shudder to think how confused it'd get if I were to install two different programs both called "example.exe". However, even though this is more of a Windows problem, you would think the Firefox installer would know to look for and correct errors like this.

  • Command to set firefox as default does not work

After setting chrome as my default browser, I want to set Firefox as my default browser from the command line on windows.
    According to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_browser I ran
    firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser
But that does not work. Chrome stays as the default browser. Setting FF as the default from the FF dialog (asking to set as default) works but I want to do it from the commandline.

We have a support article on that: [[Make Firefox the default browser on Android]]. When trying to determine the current default browser app, I think Samsung's is called "Internet".

  • Firefox not default browser when browser not open

I know how to set a default browser settings in Safari, but here's the problem. I have Firefox/Mozilla and unless I am using it and have it open, my computer uses Safari as my default browser. When I open Safari (with no Firefox pages open) and go to the applications list to choose default browser, Mozilla/Firefox is not listed anywhere. I notice when I do open Firefox browser, it opens up like another drive, not in the applications list, but in the drive list where it shows Mac HD etc, creating it's own finder folder and everything, not like an internal application. I think this is why Safari is still set as default browser if I haven't opened Firefox. Once I open Firefox, then open Safari, I can select Firefox, it shows it in the drives window, not applications. So the problem is, if I have not opened Firefox and I click on a link in an email, Safari opens up and not Firefox. Is there a way to get Firefox recognized as an application and pull up in the applications list without it being open?
    Thankyou.

You have not installed Firefox. You are running the application directly from the disk image you downloaded.
Double-click on the .dmg file that contains Firefox. The disk image will mount on the Desktop. A Finder window will open automatically, drag the Firefox icon from the window to your Applications folder. Eject the mounted disk image and delete the .dmg file (or archive it somewhere.)

  • How can I stop Firefox from restoring minimized windows when I open a new Firefox instance?

Did you perform the fixes from the "Preferences not saved" article?
Try to delete or rename/move the prefs.js file and other possible prefs-##.js with a number and user.js files in the Firefox Profile Folder.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Make sure that Firefox isn't running when you delete files in the profile folder.

  • How can I turn off the the big orange window that keeps opening on top of Google since the last firefox update installed.

Since the last mozilla/firefox update whenever I go online, google and mozilla/firefox open at the same time and I can not see google since mozille/firefox (a big orange window) opens on top of google. Hi pamerritt,
Are you saying you always see the "Welcome to Firefox" message? If so, you should look at [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+has+just+updated+tab+shows+each+time+you+start+Firefox this article about that specific issue] and the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved]. These should give you all the information you need!
    If that doesn't work:
    # Type about:config in the address bar
    # Click ''I'll be careful, I promise'' if prompted
    # In the Filter input field type ''startup''
    # Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
    # Delete the text string and click ''OK''
    # Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.
    Hopefully this helps!
