Can I startup with Leopard from Mac Mini using iMac G5 as display?

I'm considering a mac mini purchase after the release of leopard. I have a iMac G5 that is not cutting it for film rendering. I would like to use it as a display for my Mac mini. Can I use Startup disk and work in the Mac Mini's OS?

No, you can't use a G5 iMac as if it were the mini's boot drive and display, and even if you could, that's an incredibly expensive drive and display. It would make far more sense to sell it and use the money to purchase a fast external drive and good quality monitor for the mini.
The nearest solution allowing you to continue to use the iMac and output the mini to it is to use the iMac to control the mini using one of the many flavors of VNC. That will allow you to display the mini's output, in effect in a window on the iMac. However, while this would allow you to take advantage of the mini's processing power, performance of the network connection is likely to influence the efficiency of possible use for applications such as video project development which rely heavily on continuously streaming data.
I find it curious that the G5 iMac is so woefully ineffective in this use that you would be considering this. What specification is the iMac, what video software are you using, and in what way do you find it problematic?

Can I move my iWeb from mac-mini to my new macbook pro ? iLife 11 does not have iWeb and I really want to use it to update my website on my new macbook Pro instead of Mac mini

There is no license required for iWeb.  Just do a Wyodor suggested and you'll be ready to go. If you're running Lion however, consider the following:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • How can I boot and run my Mac Mini on my 12" PwrBk display using firewire?

How can I boot and run my Mac Mini on my 12" PwrBk display using firewire?

    bwhit:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No reason why you should not be able to do it using Firewire Target Disk Mode. Here's what you do:
    1. With both computers shut down connect both via firewire.
    2. Startup the Mini and hold down "T" key immediately after chime.
    3. Startup the PB and immediately after chime hold down Option key.
    4. Select second HDD icon on the screen and click on the right pointing arrow.
    5. Computer will boot from Mini's HDD.
Be sure to shut down PB completely before shutting down Mini.
Please do post back with an update or with further questions or comments.

  • Can you help with a TV / Mac mini configuration?

So.... the plan is to buy a new 32-40 inch TV for the bedroom upstairs. All of my TV cables and Internet stuff are at the basement. I am not planning to bring any cables upstairs (TV or Ethernet) so this is what I am thinking:
    - HDTV 32-40 inch
    - Powerline to bring network connectivity upstairs
    - Slingbox PRO-HD
    - Mac mini to use SlingPlayer, Hulu, iTunes, DVD Player etc. etc.
    - One of those Air Mice
These are the questions I have:
    1) The HDMI on the new Mac mini transfers sound as well as video. Correct? No need for extra adaptor?
    2) Can some suggest a good Air Mouse that works well with the new Mac mini?
    3) Anything I need to make sure the TV is capable in order to work well with the Mac mini (except of course for the HDMI port)? Resolution? Other ports? Options?
    4) Anyone with a similar configuration? Any issues that you might see with this configuration?
    Thanks

I cannot answer any of your other questions, but, yes, the Mid 2010 Mac mini carries both a digital audio and video signal from the HDMI port.
Sorry, what is an air mouse?

  • Moving from mac mini to iMac with my backups

i'm waiting for my iMac and i will use migration assistent to get my account from Mac mini
but how can i bring my time machine backups on the new iMac, i need to restore older version of some code files
    Is it possible?
can i do it even moving it to a new external drive?

Purchase Aperture and use it to fix the links that break when you move the library (assuming that you have the latest iPhoto) or purchae iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use it to rebuild a managed library
One of the many reasons that referenced libraries are not currently recommended with iPhoto is its inability to handle a change in the path to the photos

  • Can't install Snow Leopard on Mac Mini with 10.5.8.

I'm trying to install an upgrade copy of Snow Leopard from Apple on my Mac Mini running 10.5.8. I bought this system used and the volume says ";" and the error log code is 21. Seems it can't find valid softward ID to continue or the path is different. Not sure where to go with this.

If your mini meets the specifications for Snow Leopard (an intel processor and 1GB or more of memory)
then go here to buy snow leopard

It's possible that the upgrade disk you have is specific to particular Mac models.

  • Can I run VGA monitor from Mac Mini HDMI port?

    Hi:
I have a Mac Mini with one HDMI port and one Thunderbolt port. I have a Thunderbolt-only audio interface, so I need to connect my monitor to the HDMI port.
I bought an HDMI to VGA adapter cable for this purpose, but when I connect the monitor (Acer  x233hz), all I get is a "No Signal Present" error message.
Is there a setting I can change in order to use the hardware I have, or do I have to find another solution?
    Thanks!

You need an HDMI to VGA converter, not an adopter. Since the HDMI signal is digital only you need to convert that to analogue. You need somnethging like this

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on Mac Mini Server hardware?

What I would like to do is buy the Mac Mini Server but I don't need the server OS. I want the desktop OS on the Mac Mini Server. Will installing Snow Leopard on the server hardware be just like installing it on a regular Mac Mini?
Or should I just wait and see how Lion shakes out?

Thanks Indy, I already had proceeded the installation according your tip. Just an objection related to the updates: I was able to install the OS updates only while in target mode, as when I made 2 attempts to update the version 10.6.6 to the current one (10.6.7 - the combo one and the MBP version too) it was not permitted. I had to plug the FW cable into the MBP again and update the Mini's OS (using the special MBP version of 10.6.7) in target disc mode. I want to use the Mini as a media server and intend to install Windows 7 on the other HD which now hosts the server OS. However, according to one poster (Sven G) there are some problems (I don't know exactly what they are) related to Boot Camp software. Have you any information about these problems?
I have maintained both OS (standard and server) living side by side on the Mini, is there any problem with that?
Again many thanks, you were succinct, right to the point, and your tip just proved itself correct.
    Cheers

  • From Mac mini to iMac?

    Hello
I switched about 6 months ago when I bought a Mac mini, and I'm definitely loving the whole Mac-thing! However, the computer is kinda weak, I recently read that the video card on Mac mini stops working properly if the screen resolution exceeds 1280x960, or something. What I have noticed is that the Tiger animations such as Exposé and Dashboard stutter very annoyingly, user switching cube doesn't rotate very nicely at all, and iTunes visualizer seems to be too heavy for this computer. As silly as it may sound, but this has been a huge turn-off for me.
And the iLife apps seem to be a little heavy as well, I'm seeing the spinning beach ball very often, and GarageBand is giving me error messages about the hard drive being too slow...
How do these things work on a 20" iSight iMac with 1 gig of RAM? I can't really test this anywhere, unless I take a long trip to the nearest Apple Center. I guess a Power Mac would be best, but I find the iMac much more appealing aesthetically and price-wise, so I thought I'd ask here to be sure.
    Thank you
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.42 GHz 1 GB RAM

    Thanks for your replies!
As for the speed problems with Mac mini, I've repaired permissions, verified disk, I've used apps like YASU and Onyx, but these haven't really improved the performance much. I also have about 45 gigs of free space, so that's not a problem, I think? I would imagine I have these "problems" simply because of the 4200 RPM hard drive, and because of the rather crippled video card with very little VRAM.
I did a little test, and Exposé (with maximum of 4 windows) was ultrasmooth when the Dock was set to hide, and there were no icons on the desktop, go figure? And the other graphical stuff was really smooth when I reduced the resolution, but that is not really a solution with an LCD display.
Some XBench scores show that the 2.1 GHz iMac gets a score of 80-90 compared to my Mini which got 31, but I don't know how this "translates" in real world usage? There doesn't seem to be that much difference in CPU stuff, on few things my G4 appears to be slightly faster, but the bars on graphic tests and disk tests are most definitely longer compared to my system.
Please bear with me, I'm slightly ignorant on this stuff.

I am just aquiring a late 2012 Mac mini to replace my aging Dell laptop.

  • Don't want to pollute my ipad how can I selectively transfer data from mac mini?

I have had users on this computer that have downloaded questioanble resources. I have grandchildren and we like to play on my ipad I do not want any objectionalbe video on this ipad.  I also don't want to make my creative content available for duplication to a user who had hooked up their iphone.  I am attempting to start over with my ipad. I have tried to keep them off the main computer but I need safeguards since the user is opportunistic. They also have a better understanding and advantage I am however an administrator at least as much as much as my husband allows me. I believe this user could still manupulate via wireless or remote with her iphone. I want to stop her completely but I know to challenge this user completely would mean an esculation. I have seen my email with another adress attached . I sometimes put in the exact password and still find for a short period cannot get into e-mail an Apple password  might not work? Is there script I can see that would suggest a problem.

Your situation is a little bit confusing to me, but I will give this a try. I hope that I fully understand what you are trying to do.
There is no way that anyone can access your iPad wirelessly or remotely at all. It just is not possible to do that in iOS. Because of the sandboxed nature of the iOS, it will not allow that type of interaction. However, if your iPad has been "polluted" by another user or that user's content, you might want to totally erase the drive and start all over again, and not restore from a backup. Erase it and start all over again completely. You will still be able to download most if not all of your paid content again as long as you use the same Apple ID that you used to make the purchases.
Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings will totally wipe the iPad clean and you will have to activate the device all over again. Don't restore from the backup when you get to the point during the activation where you are prompted to do so.
If you want to download all of your constant again, read this.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store ... - Support - Apple
Erasing your iPad and starting over again is pretty radical if you are not absolutely sure that this users has really sabotaged the device. Please make sure that you realize what you are doing, and if I am reading the situation incorrectly, please state that in your response.
What you are saying about this user having access to your computer is certainly concerning and without knowing what the circumstances surrounding her ability to do so, I can only recommend that you discuss this situation with your husband and take steps to prevent her from using it, or at least from using it without you being there to observe.

If you mean the 10.4 DVD is a full-retail copy for any machine, not the version that came with the Mac mini.

  • Aiplay from Mac Mini to AppleTV with simultaneous audio on both

I just installed an AppleTV (2013) to my HDTV with Bose speakers connected to the TV.  I can mirror my Mac Mini to the Apple TV and play Pandora music from my Mac Mini on Apple TV, but to do so I am using the Settings/Sound/AppleTV on my Mac Mini to play audio over the AppleTV.  I have not been able to play Pandora simultaneously over both the Mac Mini speakers and the AppleTV speakers.  The AppleTV is connected to the router by Ethernet. My desire is to play Pandora (and other audio sources) simultaneously over both the Mac Mini and AppleTV.

I can play audio on both the Mac Mini and Apple TV simultaneously by using ITunes and the Airplay icon from within ITunes.  In ITunes, I select the Airplay icon and choose "mulitiple" and select both "computer" and "Apple TV" and have volume controls for both and each indiviudally.  It works, so the devices are connected and Ethernet is not the issue.  Is there a way outside of ITunes to play audio over both Mac Mini speakers and Apple TV speakers?
