Can I still backup my HD after s.m.a.r.t. failure?

I have an early 2009 iMac. A couple weeks ago it began to act very stuttery and slow and then would eventually freeze. I booted into safe mode and was told the HD had problems and needed to be repaired. I booted from the osX snow leopard install disc and repaired through disk utility. After this it seemed to working fine but eventually started to freeze again and then would no longer boot.
Again I booted up through the install disc but this time was given an error message similar to this:
This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk
and that I should take it in. I am not in front of this computer but can get the exact message once I am.
I also noticed at this time that the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom was saying failed.
When I tried to reboot from the HD it would just get stuck on the grey screen and would give me the bar you get when booting into safe mode.
After that it began to just shut off if I left it trying to boot and now the install disc is stuck in the computer. I have looked up some way to get the disc out so hopefully one of those will work. If not I may have another problem and question.
So here are my questions:
1. If I am able to get the install disc out would running DiskWarrior be able to fix this long enough for me to back up?
2. If not is there a way to back up my data when booting from an install disc?
I have two partitions on the drive and I am able to go into the partitions and see the names of the files but they are greyed out. I don't feel like it's completely shot so I am still hoping there is some way to retrieve the data.
I have looked at other posts regarding this but have not found an answer regarding backing up.
Thanks in advance for everyone's help

Apple has finally acknowledged a problem with Seagate drives installed in iMacs from 2009-2011. If your interal drive model number is ST31000528AS, you may be eligible for the replacement program:
http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/
Some suggestions:
First, check to see if your computer is covered under the hard drive replacement program by entering your serial number on the link above
Run the AHT test. If your iMac came with Snow Leopard, AHT is located on the CDs that are included with the iMac
If AHT indicates a drive failure, then contact Apple to make arrangements for a replacement drive
If you need still need to use your iMac and want to install OSX on an external drive, you can find detailed instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
My iMac (27", 2.93 i7) has the ST31000528AS installed and it died after 18 months of service. I received the same error you received; I also ran the AHT tests, and it confirmed the drive failed. I was able to install OS X Lion on an external firewire drive as a work around and I did not loose any data as I have a multiple backup strategy in place (Time Machine backups on multiple drives and backups generated in Chronosync on multiple drives).

  • Flashing question mark on screen. Can I still backup my files and restore my system?

Okay, so yesterday evening, I received a message from my teacher that I had to redo one of my papers because a program she used detected some copy paste information that was about 39% more than what she accepts and asked me to reword some of the information. When I started working on my paper to resubmit it to her, My laptop was freezing a lot in the middle of me working on my school paper. After a while, it completely froze to the point where I could no longer do anything and stayed frozen for hours on end. I couldn't even save my work which was very frustrating considering I wanted to get that done and out of the way. I felt that I had no choice but to force it to turn off and turn it back on. In the process of me doing so, a flashing file with a question mark came on in which I took the time to look up to see what it meant and how can I fix it. However, after many reading, I realized that if I reboot the system I will lose everything I have that's important to me (which technically is my school work, some photos, and licensing application). I never used the Time Machine when my laptop was up and running because I never understood it or knew how to use it. One of the things I read is that I am able to restore my laptop with Time Machine. But I was curious to know if I can still use Time Machine to backup and restore my laptop? I'm hoping I can as I really do not want to lose the information and files I have saved. Below are the basic information of my laptop. Please help!!!!

The fact that you can boot into Recovery Mode, which is a hidden partition on your HD, means your HD is working, at least somewhat. Since your main concern is retaining the files that are important to you, what I'd suggest is creating a clone on a separate, external HD. You can do that by booting into Recovery again, partitioning the external with a GUID partition table and creating at least one partition for a clone (3TB externals are pretty inexpensive these days and you could have plenty of partitions large enough to hold what's on your internal drive) and using "Restore" in DU with the internal as the source and the external partition as the target. With that done, see if you can boot from that external clone. If you can't, go back to Recovery, and, instead of Disk Utility, choose Reinstalling the OS but with the clone you just made as the target. When that's done, see if you can boot from the external, and if you can, you will have a working bootable backup of your internal and all your files. You can then wipe the internal and Restore to the internal by using Restore in Disk Utility in Recovery Mode with the external as the source and the internal as the target. Normally, I'd suggest just reinstalling the OS on the internal, but if there's something wrong with the drive, you may risk making things worse, and first priority is to protect your files.

  • ¿Can I still use CC applications after 1 year commitment?

Well, I am almost ready to start an annual subscription for the creative cloud, but I have a question about what will happen after the 1 year commitment:
After I have paid 1 year of subscription, that means: 12 x US$49.99 = US$600, and I cancel the subscription some days after commitment has finished, can I still using the applications ?, or they will stop to work inmediately
Another way to ask the same: ¿After I've paid US$600 can't I use any application because I cancel the subscription?, that means ¿I must Pay US$600 each year to be a developer or designer that use Adobe products?, well this sounds like the more expensive products on the Market ¿isn't ?
What will happen with individuals, small or even medium companies that have used Adobe products for years paying just for the upgrades only when is needed, each 2 or 3 years ?, well I think those companies or individuals will be forced to change its production or designing software for something more profitable.
Now think in large companies with more of 50 employees, they must pay US$30.000.oo each year, indefinitely ?, wow I think this will be so expensive that companies will be stop using Adobe products.
I hope the answer for this quation will: After 1 year commitment you are the owner of what you paid.

If you don't continue the subscription then you lose the ability to use the software.

  • Can you still backup your stuff to an external harddrive if your harddrive is down?

so my harddrive is down and im taking it to the Apple store tomorrow but i was wondering if you can still backup your stuff beforehand to an external harddrive?

Do you have a bootable backup? If so you can boot from it then see if it can read the internal drive. What model of Macbook Pro and what version of OS X do you have?

  • Can a device still backup to iCloud after being disabled?

Ok so my phone is disabled.
I'm about to erase the phone through icloud.com, and it showing as online.
Now I know it's not connected to cellular data because I don't have data for the time being. So it must be connected to wifi still.
So I'm wondering if anyone has tried to see if a device will still back up to iCloud in this state.
The device hasn't backed up in months because I did not have storage.  I can purchase icloud storage from my other device.
It's worth a shot but as long as the device is "locked", connected to wifi and plugged into power, and I add storage, it would seem I can still get it to back up before erasing it right?
Has anyone ever tried this before or given it any thought?

  • Can I still sign a document after I certify it first?

1.I certify a pdf document first ,and I choose the permission as "form fill-in and digital signature"
2.But when I want to add digital signature to sign the document , the "Place a digital signature" is disable both in menu and toolbar :(
so ,who can tell me what can I do? Or,when I certify a document ,I will never sign it?
    Thank u ,sincerely

When a document is certified, you, as the author, are certifying the look and behavior of the document and the ability to make changes after that is very limited. If there are signature fields already on the document, you can still sign them, but you can't add free-form signatures to the document (i.e., Place Signature).
It sounds like what you want is to add one or more signature form fields to the document and then certify it. Then, the signature fields can be signed after the document is certified. (In Acrobat 8 and earlier, you use the "Sign Document" menu item or toolbar button to do this.

    Hello there stidhambr15,
I was researching the issue you are having and recommend a couple of things. First it might be a good idea to reset the device following iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't quite get the device going again, I recommend restoring the device.

Might even be a good idea to turn off the phone, reseat the SIM card, and turn it back on.

  • Can I still keep photoshop CS4 after installing photoshop CC?

Hi, I'm intending to upgrade my Photoshop CS4 to CC version, but I would like to keep CS4 in my computer, is it possible to keep these 2 versions?

    Yes.
All major versions of Adobe software install into their own folders on your hard drive. So you can always use earlier versions at any time.
It's just best not to use them at the same time due to shared files etc.
Many people have several versions installed and available at a mouseclick e.g. CS1, CS2, CS3, CS4 ... through to CC 2014 and everything in between.

  • Can't open my photo library after upgrading to iPhoto 11.  is it possible to load iPhoto 9.0.1 after loading 11?  have followed all other instructions but it still won't let me open iPhoto.

can't open my photo library after upgrading to iphoto 11.  Is it possible to download iphoto 9.0.1 after installing '11.  Have followed all the other instructions and am in a loop which doesn't allow me to access iphoto or my photos.

when iphoto wouldnt open we read the trouble shooting info and it said that we may have needed to download 9.0.1 if we had an older version.  We obviously didn't download it before the upgrade and wondered if it would cause problems or indeed solve the problem if we downloaded it now!
When we try to open iphoto is says:
To open your library with this version of iphoto it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library use the iphoto library upgrader available from Apple.
We have downloaded this twice now and it still sends us this message when we try to open iphoto.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

    As Niel pointed out, yes.  The disk probably will look like the MBP disk (4) in this screenshot;

  • , I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive. Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing, Can't play music .. how to restore back to original state .

I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive.Cant play any music as it "can't find" the library  Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing.   How to restore back to original state . I have tried re-installing  - with no change

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.
