Can I stop migration assistant on my new MacBook pro midway through? What would happen?

I started migration assistant on my brand new MacBook pro last night and I need to take one of the computers today, either my old dell laptop or the MacBook. Can I stop migration assistant? If so what would happen?

  • Migrating from iMac to new MacBook Pro

Currently I have a iMac, serial number QP833*ZE5, 2.4 GHz, with Snow Leopard 10.6.2
I will be getting a new MacBook Pro shortly.
What I would like to do is have absolutely everything on the MacBook be a duplicate of what is on my iMac.
And I can do this by simply restoring the MacBook from my stored iMac cloned disk image.
So, my question is "Is this OK?", or are there ANY differences at the System level (any at all) between my iMac 10.6.2 and the new MacBook Pro 10.6.2?
.. or, in any case, would you seriously encourage using Migration Assistant to port from my stored disk image clone? I say "from the stored clone" because this clone is on an external firewire drive which would be connected to the MacBook Pro.
    Thanks in advance for answering.

As a rule, it is not a good idea to try to restore from an older Mac's startup volume (or a clone of it) to a newer model. This is because the newer model may require a later version of the OS to support its newer hardware & the result will be a new Mac that can't start up. (See Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than that which came with your Mac for info about this.)
However, from Mac OS X versions (builds) included with Intel-based Macs, it appears that currently at least, a new MacBook Pro should be able to boot from any version of Snow Leopard, so a restore from the iMac running 10.6.2 should be OK.
But keep in mind that Setup Assistant will run the first time you power up your new MBP, & it will offer to run the equivalent of Migration Assistant to copy everything not already installed from another Mac (or a cloned drive of it) to the MBP. Since this will not replace any apps or OS components included on the BMP will older versions from the iMac, but can copy over everything else (except system settings that don't apply & you don't need anyway), it is a good, perhaps even better, option for you.
Besides, you really don't want to duplicate absolutely everything from the iMac -- many of the files on it are just temporary working files, caches, etc. that the MBP will just discard or ignore.

  • HT4796 Can Windows 7 be installed on my new MacBook Pro, through my network connection?  The disc would be in my Windows desktop.

Can Windows 7 be installed on my new MacBook Pro, through my network connection?  The disc would be in my Windows desktop.

I wouldn't recommend installing through a network connection.
    For a Virtual Machine:
If you have the Win 7 media (DVD), use an app like PowerISO or MagicISO to make an ISO file of the install disc and use that.
    For BootCamp:
Use the original install media and BootCamp Assistant, to install from your DVD Drive.

The seller should have given you the original disk so that you can reinstall as needed. But it likely was a single-user license (which really means single computer) so you can only have a copy on one computer at a time. If the seller didn't give you the disk he is probably still using the software on his new Mac. Your best option to get any of the iWork apps to use in OS X 10.6.6 or later is through the Mac App Store. You can then install them on any Mac you have that has access to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID.

  • HT1329 My large iTunes library is on an external hard drive. Can I set up iTunes on my new Macbook Pro and copy the library to it or are there any pitfalls?

I have my large iTunes library on an external hard drive. Can I set up ITunes on my new Macbook Pro and transfer/copy this library to the internal hard drive or are there any problems I should be aware of?

ITs an old Iomega 100gb external HD that has about 90gb of music on it. The Macbook has a 500gb HD. I would like to put the iTunes library on the internal HD so I have room to expand.
    Phil0124 wrote:
You can copy it to the internal hard drive as long as it fits on it. How big is your library, and how big is your internal HD?
The only thing you do not want to do is over-stuff the internal hard drive. The OS needs some space to operate correctly, so if your iTunes library uses up more than say 80 to 85% of the internal HD's available space it may not be a good idea to transfer it over.
With that said, the internal HD will provide slightly faster access to the library than the external would, but other than that, you can point iTunes to the external drive just fine.

  • Can I stop Migration Assistant (using Command + Q) if I am only transferring music?

    Hi everyone,
I just recieved my new Macbook Pro with Retina.  It is my first Mac.  I am transferring music using Migration Assistant from my Vista PC.  I was wondering if it would cause any issues if I cancel the operation (as it will take over a day on wireless)?  There are no settings involved, just music files (mostly mp3's).
    Thanks.

If you were transferring files during the initial setup, you were using Setup Assistant. Migration Assistant can be run later; however, it will automatically create a new user account (because you've already set up an account during the setup), so you'll wind up with two accounts and duplicate folders which will take a while to sort.
If you just want to drag over certain files, best to use target disk mode (you need a firewire cable):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725
If you want to use that, you can just erase your drive using the recovery option and then download/reinstall your OS again.

  • Migration Assistant - Problems copying 2009 MacBook Pro data to new MacBook Pro

Purchased new MacBook Pro and tried to copy old MacBook Pro (circa 2009) data to new one using migration assistant.  It stalled after about 20 hours via wireless.  My question is how can I restore the new machine to factory settings and start over?  Or is there a better way to copy the remaining files/applications?  Please note that I've tried to run migration assistant again and it keeps exiting to login screen on the new MacBook Pro - after connection is made.

How much RAM does it have?
In spite of what Apple says, 4GB is not practically adequate with the new 64-bit systems (Lion and successors). All MBPs from Early 2011 forward, with user-installable RAM SO-DIMMs, can take up to 16GB with no problems and with greatly enhanced performance.
And if you still persist in running the systems with 4GB, make sure there's ample paging space on the HDD.

  • Migrated iPhoto content to new MacBook Pro,  but can't get '11

    Hi there,
I migrated my iPhoto content from my old laptop to my new one, the new one has OSX 10.6.7, but somehow I seem to have migrated iPhoto v8.1.2 also. iPhoto '11 should be part of 10.6.7, right? iPhoto '11 cannot be found on my new computer, did one cancel the other?
My hubby did exactly the same thing, migrated his old iPhoto content to his new MacBook Pro and he has iPhoto '11. I have tried to download it but it seems that it's too big to download, it requires a physical disc. My computer came with the software already loaded.
If anyone can give me any pointers on how to fix this I'd be so grateful.
    Thanks,

How did you migrate the iPhoto content?
As to iPhoto version - iPhoto does not come with any OS - it comes on new computers and can be purchased as part of iLife or in the App store
reinstall iPhoto - go to your receipts folder ("Your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) and remove any iPhoto receipts and reinstall from the restore disks that came with your computer - do a custom install of bundled software only

  • Interrupting migration assistant from imac to macbook pro?

i am currently using migration assistant to transfer information from my imac to a recently purchased macbook pro. unfortunately i didn't investigate enough before starting the process and i didn't expect it will take me 5 hours to finish. my question is: can i interrupt the process without damaging the computers or files? if so, how?

thanks Kappy for your quick reply. my biggest dilemma is that is about 1:33am, and i am contemplating to stay awake until early morning. still 4h:53min to go for the transfer tonbe completed. another related question: when i turned on my macbook pro was not prompted to install the software that came with it. instead i started with setup assistant that led me to migration information. i even didn't set up a new account or email in my new macbook pro. do you think once the migration is over i'll be prompted to install the software? by the way, my imac is relatively new (purchased in march this year)------- any thoughts? do you think i was not prompted to install the software because the imac software is update?

  • I have an Ipod classic sync'd to a PC. The PC is no longer working. I purchased a new MacBook pro. How can I sync the Ipod to the new Macbook pro

I have an Ipod classic sync'd to a PC. The PC is no longer working. I purchased a new MacBook pro. How can I sync the Ipod to the new Macbook pro

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time. It will recognize the iTunes library on the Mac as a new library. If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library. So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your Mac first.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • Starting Failed Data Migration Over Again With New Macbook Pro

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro. Upon transferring files from an old Macbook via a backup and Time machine, the startup screen on the new Macbook Pro now  just shows white and a spinning disk. I can't even get a normal desktop.
1.New Macbook Pros do not have installation disks in the box. How do I get back to the welcome setup screen and start over when the migration did not work?

    Use Lion recovery:
