Can I stop Migration Assistant (using Command + Q) if I am only transferring music?

Hi everyone,
I just recieved my new Macbook Pro with Retina.  It is my first Mac.  I am transferring music using Migration Assistant from my Vista PC.  I was wondering if it would cause any issues if I cancel the operation (as it will take over a day on wireless)?  There are no settings involved, just music files (mostly mp3's).
Thanks.

If you were transferring files during the initial setup, you were using Setup Assistant. Migration Assistant can be run later; however, it will automatically create a new user account (because you've already set up an account during the setup), so you'll wind up with two accounts and duplicate folders which will take a while to sort.
If you just want to drag over certain files, best to use target disk mode (you need a firewire cable):

If you want to use that, you can just erase your drive using the recovery option and then download/reinstall your OS again.

  • Can I stop Migration assistant and run setup instead?

    While running setup on my new iMac, I was prompted to transfer data from my old computer using Migration assistant.  I thought I was just transferring the user profiles but it seems to be transferring all the associated documents and downloads.  It's taking a long time and I'd rather stop the process and just setup the new computer from scratch. Is this possible? I dont actually want all the crap my kids downloaded over the last few years clogging up my new system ...

  • HT4413 Can I stop migration assistant?

    Can migration assistant be stop after it is started?

    Yes, but I don't know how that'll affect things,

  • HT4796 can I cancel migration assistant once it's in progress

    Just recieved my new MacBook Pro and migrating from my PC is going to take 15 hours. I think because of the pictures. Can I cancel the process without losing what has already migrated and start over later?

    I would go a slightly different route. If you can add a partition to the external, then I would bootably clone my Leo install to the new partition. Under the circumstances, having two backups isn't a bad idea. If you can't make a new partition, then I would clone to the external erasing the TM backup in the process. For migration purposes, I would feel much more comfortable having a clone as a backup than trusting a TM backup. If you want you can make your clone using Disk Utility (DU) and these instructions:
    1. Start DU;
    2. Make sure you external drive is partitioned GUID;
    3. Choose Restore;
    4. Drag your internal volume to the source box;
    5. Drag your external partition to the destination box;
    6. Choose Erase Destination; and
    7. Click restore.
    It will take an hour more or less. Once the clone is made, start up from it to make sure it is functional.
    Before turning the old machine over to the new owner, I would reinstall Leopard using the erase and install method. Then, I would quit the installation at the point you enter Setup Assistant At this point, don't enter any information. Instead, quit setup assistant using command+q and shut down the computer. By quitting, the new owner will get the machine exactly as it would have come from the factory.

    Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
    Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
    I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
    Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

    Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
    If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.

    You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

    Choose migrate from other disk or volume.

  • TS1963 What if I can't find Migration Assistant on my mac! I have updated and installed any available downloads.

    I have tried reloading the system and downloading the updates. I am giving this Mac Mini to my father-in-law and I had the same problem before reloading the system when I was trying to load the contents onto my new Mini Server. My solution at the time was to put the mini into external drive mode and use a Firewire cable to connect to the new macmini. I would really like a solution that doesn't envolve buying cables or tearing apart his old computer.
    Right now I can't load Migration Assistant on my Mac Mini Server because the Migration Assistant doesn't show up despite various attempts to load it. It is part of the system, so it should be there. I have no reference to this problem because there is no discussion about it or similar problem that appears through google searching.

    OS X Servers do not have Migration Assistant - this only on client computers.
    If you want your father to use the OS X Server it will be a manual data transfer. It can be done over the network, external USB drive or as you mentioned various cables.

    There is a conflict with third party software or your system keyboard shortcuts. Lately, there have been many postings about conflicts with Chrome extensions so check there first.
    It's not a new problem. I wrote about it on InDesignSecrets.com in 2006:

  • HT4413 Does Migration Assistant use a lot of internet data?

    We're on a set limit and don't want to exceed it..
    Anyone with prior experience would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    Migration Assistant doesn't use Internet. If you want to use Migration Assistant via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, Migration Assistant uses the router to migrate data to the other Mac that has to be connected to the same router

  • Is it possible to stop migration assistant midway? would it harm either of the machines?

    I am migrating from macbook air to macbook pro, and migration assistant has been showing 9 hours!
    unable to wait for so long, and I do not see any option to stop it. Is there any way I can stop it? Would it cause any damage to either of the macs?
    Please help!

    Just turn off both Macs. No damage will be caused, but you should remove the migrated user on the MacBook Pro in order to free up space.
    If you have any performance problem, you can use Internet Recovery to format the hard drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Can i interrupt migration assistant air

    Hi
    My existing macbook and new macbook air have been transferring info since yesterday morning via wifi/Migration Assistant.
    They have been goin at it all night and still have 10 hours to go. I'm appalled.
    I have to leave shortly to go on a trip and need a laptop with me. I was hoping it would be the Air but that obviously can't happen.
    If I pull the old Macbook out will I have to start the whole transfer again from scratch? Would it harm the donor Macbook?
    Thanks
    Ian

    It should not harm the donor Macbook. Here's a recommendation for the next time you try it. Migration Assistant is not real reliable over wi-fi. Back up your Donor Macbook via Time Machine onto an external drive. If you've never done this before, it may take a few hours--just a few, not  nearly so long as this.
    If you then hook up that drive to the Air, and use Migration Assistant to copy onto it the Time Machine copy, it should take you no longer than about thirty minutes to an hour for the Air to become a clone of the original Macbook.
    Also, don't be too sure that the copy hasn't already been made. When you stop this and cut off the Air from the Donor, you may find that Migration Assistant hasn't told you the whole truth. Time estimates and such are made moment by moment by the computer and aren't always reliable. They may even be completely wrong thanks to some glitch or other. Maybe the transfer has happened.
    Have a good trip with whichever computer you take--and sorry Migration Assistant was a pain.

  • Wish to halt Migration Assistant using Wireless

    I just began moving my wife's user information from her one year old iMac to her new Macbook Pro using Migration Assistant over a wireless connection. Although I knew it would be slower than a hard-wired connection, I had no idea it would take 7+ hours to transfer her information.
    The firewire cable I have fits the iMac but not the new MacBook Pro. I have a hardwired cat-5 network I can use if there is a way to stop the Migration Assistant without messing everything up. Is it possible to stop the process in mid transfer and start again using a different (faster) connection? Or should I just let it go and check to see if it completed in the morning?

    Stalled at 49 minutes. Would not proceed. I force quit the iMac's Migration Assistant and then hard booted the MBpro. Reconnected the two using a cat 5 cable. The MBPro launched install and when Migration Assistant came up I selected ethernet option using cat5. I relaunched Migration Assist on iMac and entered the required numbers. The MBPro said it found an interrupted migration... would I like to continue. I said yes.
    It completed the migration of information in about five minutes. So all looked good at that point. Unfortunately, it stalled again when it asked for an Apple ID and password. I entered both, but the options to continue or go back are not available (grayed out). I can select Learn More, but that doesn't offer anything other than text explanations.
    So I swallowed hard and rebooted again. It launched the install process again. I chose to skip the migration assistant when asked (I'd already moved the user information previously), and I took it to a desk where I could plug in a cat5 connection directly to it that had internet access. This time it took the log in information and confirmed all the information on the apple web site for my wife's userid. It passed to the end of the install process. The only unusual thing is that my wife now has a userid/name for this MBPro as an admin AND her original userid/name from the iMac as an additional user. One with her first name only and the other with her whole name. It seems to be okay. I can just set it up to go to her other name from the iMac as default and keep the one set up with the install as her admin/back up name.
    So all is well. It completed the migration/set up with all the issues resolved. Rebooting midstream did not create a problem after all. I did not have to reinstall the OS. I am very relieved. My wife thinks I'm a hero. I can live with that.

  • Troubleshoot Migration Assistant used internally to consolidate two SSDs?

    Hi,
    I'm on a Macbook Pro Mid-2010, where I swapped out the optical drive for an extra disk. Now I have two SSDs, one 256GB with my OS and applications, and one 1TB with my user folder and media and everything else.
    I aim to consolidate everything onto the big 1TB SSD. I backed up with Time Machine, then booted into Recovery, and installed Yosemite onto the 1TB SSD. Then, I think it automatically goes into Migration Assistant, so I just set that to start (Applications and the rest) going from the SSD which previously ran OS X. It went to a screen that says "Transferring Your Information", with the blue time bar underneath. That loaded to completion pretty quickly. But now, it's just sitting on this screen and still says "Starting up..." above the blue bar. It's been like that for about 20 hours. Anyone experienced this? Should I keep waiting or did this process freeze perhaps? The mouse cursor still moves on the screen, so it's not completely frozen anyway.
    It seems it should be relatively quick since it's transferring internally from hard drive to hard drive, where I thought the throughput would be even better than thunderbolt. Is it possible Migration Assistant is just somehow doing it over WiFi anyway because it doesn't know any better?
    Thanks!

    The easiest at this point would be to start over - use recovery (Command + R keys at boot up) to connect to Apple's servers (be patient - takes a while). Once you see the Utilities screen, choose Disk Utility to erase the drive. When done, choose to reinstall OS X. Now, when you get to the screen asking if you want anything moved over, then in your case, I'd say no at this point. Once you set up your iMac which will include you establishing your own Apple ID/password, you can then selectively port over files and such. You can use Migration Assistant in the Applications folder at that point (FWIW, you used Setup Assistant at the beginning?) - the annoying problem with that is that it will move stuff over using your old ID so you'll wind up with a lot of duplicates which then need to be sorted. That's one way, the other is that you move only the files you need (not involving Migration Assistant). Or, backup your files on an external drive and then move them back over once you have everything else reinstalled.
    Please note: anything at all downloaded from the app store is tied to Apple ID used to obtain it forever and is not transferable, so if there are any applications, OS updates, or anything else involved, you will need to re-download or re-purchase using your own Apple ID.

  • Can't update migration assistant to transfer data to new mac

    Just bought a new MacBook Pro and want to use Migration Assistant to transfer data from my Macbook OS X 10.4.11       The new MacBook Pro says i need to update Migration Assistant on the source computer, but when i run software update on the source computer it says there is nothing that needs updating.  Any ideas on how to get this done?

    Right, there is no update for 10.4.11, only 110.5.8 & up.
    If the old MacBook has Firewire you can put it in FireWire target disk mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
    So you only need MA on the newer one.
    If no FW on the old one you'll need to clobe the old one to an externak drive tahat can be moved to the new one.
    Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
