Can I stop my Mac automatically downloading files.
Can I make another program, in this case iGetter my default download program instead of my Mac automatically doing the downloads. They just don't work most of the time, and if they stop, then to resume they start from zero. This problem was fixed on the darkside years ago. Surely Apple must allow other defaults when their's is so bad? When I manage to use iGetter I have no problems.

I do have a NetComm NB6 running 802.11n at 300Mbps (guess I do have a cable), but judging by the pictures on the box I need ADSL2+ for that. Well I only a have wireless broadband service, so plugging it into the phone socket will do Sweet Fanny Adams, as my Dear Ol' Dad woulda said. I use the pathetic interface supplied by my service provider to access my broadband service.
Now if I plug the non-pathetic router into the Mac ethernet port, from one of the four ports provided using the non-existent cable, everything is hunky dory. The Mac sees it and I have another wi-fi network, and it may be possible to get it to receive my broadband signal (seeing it is wireless), but mate, that is way beyond this Antepodean Wally's expertise. There are no pictures for that!
If this router will do the job I have not the foggiest idea how to do it.
ps. I hate this smiley face stuff (couldn't find one that says tongue-in cheek), but I have been mistaken for a rude wanker before today, and thought, seeing we know each other not, I would put them in this one time out of respect for your efforts to help this dumb PC reject.

Have many performance problems with latest versions of Firefox.
I remove fFrefox and reinstall 18.0 and everything is fine until Firefox automatically updates to 28.x.

Did you check your security software (firewall, anti-virus) to make sure that the new version in allowed?
It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

You can create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

How can I STOP iTunes from automatically trying to add podcasts to my iPod when I plug it in and sync it, so I can manage the files? I have already unchecked "Sync Podcasts" and "Automatically include,"yet EVERY time I sync it,it still transfers podcasts as the last step, and at other times randomly, when trying to just add some MP3's to a playlist, for example. I can't seem to find any other option to uncheck, and can't find an answer from my so-far internet searching.
erict, you blew me away with that suggestion! It was something so simple I couldnt believe I hadnt thought of it! But in the end it didn't work, which I was really surprised about. On Windows anytime anything was moved itunes was hoplessly lost, but on this mac it still kept up with everything. I tried renaming folders, moving folders, and even renaming moved folders but it still kept trying to import.
I even went as far as deleting EVERYTHING i had moved to the Mac, which didnt really work. It still kept trying to import what wasnt there which made it continue to freeze up. However, after doing this it, the freezing was not nearly as bad. It gave me enough of a break to cancel it through the itunes dialog box at the top of the app. So in the end, thats all I really needed to do, only before I had deleted everything the freezing would not allow me to do it.
So now Im reimporting everything again, only slowly, and only a few Artists at a time. -
I downloaded iMesh and I can't stop it from automatically popping up each time I request a new tab. I have uninstalled the program, but I want to stop it from defaulting as a new tab. I tried uninstalling the add on and plug in, but it is no longer installed as an add-on or plug in. How do I get the "new tab" request to simply open with a blank address in the address box instead of www.imesh.com.
Ok, I finally managed to get rid of it.
First I did the thing with the about:config but I flitered for imesh instead and managed to reset two thing but when I got to the keyword.URL I got the same thing as lolbabe98 did with the "An attempt to change your search engine or homepage was blocked."
Then I did a search on my C: drive for iMesh and discovered some things that hadn't been removed even though I had unistalled both the toolbar and the actual program. After that it worked fine and I now have a regular "untitled" tab when I open a new tab.
One last thing, when I tried to remove some of the files there was one that said it was in use, it was called datamanagerUI or something rather. The only thing I had to do there was to open Task Manager and kill a process called DATAMN~1 and I was able to remove it. Hope this helps. -

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

Why does Safari automatically download files? I want option to download or not. I didn't think it used to automatically download. But now every time I click on a file that has been sent to me it does give me an option to view or not..it just automatically downloads it. Any suggestions?

Elements 8 won't automatically download files
Although I've checked the "automatic download" box on the advanced dialog for downloading files, Elements 8 will not automatically download files when I connect my camera to my computer. Instead, I have to manually go into the organizer and click File->Get Photos from Camera or Card, which pulls up the downloader. Then I still have to select the device to download from - even though it's connected and the organizer recognizes it, I have to do everything manually.

Here, select generic device under download options and click EDIT.
now select automatic download from the drop-down menu, click ok and restart organizer.

How do I stop podcasts from automatically downloading?
I've tried everything including changing the settings for my entire library to just refresh the feeds, but iTunes is still automatically downloading episodes.
What is worse though, is many times its going back into certain feeds to download older, and usually years old, episodes, so that obviously clogs up memory and CPU space on my computer, with no seemingly end in site when dealing with podcasts that have episode numbers in the hundreds and for some reason the feed is downloading dozens of them from several years ago.
I don't understand that at all, in terms of why iTunes refreshing a feed would go back and download episodes going way back in the feed's history as opposed to the latest one, or the ones that showed up, since the last time the feed was refreshed, with the proper later dates, but I'd just want to stop the automatic process and just simply have all the feeds refreshed so I can pick and choose what I want to download, instead of all at once. What am I doing wrong?Go to iTunes > Preferences > Store and Uncheck the option to Sync podcast subscriptions, settings and stations, then set up each machine as you want it.

How can I make sure that a downloaded file goes to the left of the desktop

This may be a stupid question but I havent found the answer after much searching. Basically I like to have my dock on the right. And because of that, I life to have all the icons on my dekstop on the left. No problem so far. I managed to move the HD icons by making aliases and unticking the keep arranged option. So now all my desktop icons are on the left exactly where I want them to be. However when I download a file, that file shows up on the right of the desktop! I would really like it to just fall in line with the other icons, i.e. on the left.
You may think im being picky but the thing is, I download a lot of files, and what ends up happening is I get a column of files on the right, very close to the dock (so close in fact that their names are hidden by it). So it is quite annoying.

If I were you, I'd create a folder named "Recent Downloads", place it on the left on my desktop, and set my browser's preferences to
"*Save downloaded files to:*" this folder.
Note that you can also play with the Finder's View Options (command+J) so that size of the icons combined with label position (bottom or right) make it look good and handy with the dock on the right.
That's what I do myself. I use icon size 40 and text size 11pt, with the label on the right.
With the "Snap to Grid" option checked, it all fits beautifully with my Dock on the right of my screen.
Tip:
One of the known factors of slowing down Mac OS X, is to have a lot of icons (no matter which) on the desktop.
So if you don't care about a beautiful wallpaper, free of cluttering icons all over it,
at least consider this slowing down aspect:
~ it is much better to create folders within the Documents, Pictures, Movies folders, or also at the top level of Macintosh HD or each User's,
and organize your work that way, so you can keep as few icons as possible on the Desktop.

Message was edited by: MacvinI made the switch from PC to Macs about a year ago and was surprised I did not need to add any extraction utilities. Have you tried just double clicking on the downloaded file, it should install without any effort other than the double click.
