Can I stop TM's Snapshots without a Terminal command?

I'm going to apologize upfront if the answer to my question seems obvious, but Mac OS and Time Machine is all new to me.
There is a possibility that there is something amiss with my external hard drive.  I have ejected the hard drive and read in a thread that there is a way to disable TM's continuous "local Snapshots" Backup with a command typed in Terminal.  The reasoning is that TM uses a lot of CPU's? and things can become a bit sluggish.
Anyway, here's my question:  If I turn TM to "OFF", doesn't this stop the hourly snapshots on the INTERNAL hard drive?
B.

There seems to be some misinformation here. I can't entirely correct it because I don't have all the information.
First and foremost, how big is your startup drive? How big is your time machine drive? How much space is free on each?
Without knowing those exact values, it is hard to say anything for sure.
I can definitely tell you that if you are noticing any problem with Time Machine, then Time Machine is not the problem. The last thing you want to do is turn it off. Find out what the problem is first. Time Machine runs in the background. If your machine is healthy and you are using a locally connected external drive, you should never notice Time Machine is running.
How old is your computer? How old is the internal hard drive in it? Your internal drive may be beginning to fail.
For the record, that error code is entirely meaningless. There are many such messages printed in system logs. They aren't meant for end users to dechipher.
Local backups are simply Time Machine running without using the external hard drive. If you have a notebook machine, Time Machine always runs, even if your backup drive is not connected. It is not correct to say that the local snapshots only contain a week's worth of files. They contain all changes but are coalesced daily and weekly, just like regular Time Machine backups. When you connect your external drive, they are all moved to the main Time Machine disk. If you are noticing that the local backups are running, then something is seriously wrong. One possibility is that you are using Parallels/VMWare/VirtualBox or Entourage that is not optimized for how Time Machine runs. Parallels and similar programs have settings to allow you to exclude their data form Time Machine so you can back it up manually. If you aren't using these problems, and you are noticing local backups, then your internal hard drive is either full or about to fail. If the drive is close to 3 years old, either could easily be true.

  • Can anyone suggest me a handbook of mac terminal commands

Guyz I am new user of mac and I like to use the terminal. Can anyone kindly suggest me any handbook or codebook for learning basic mac terminal commands?

Spend some time in a book store that has a section of Unix/Linux oriented computer books.  Find a book that discusses the Bash Shell (Bourne Again Shell; in tribute to Bourne, who wrote one of the first shell's to be popular on Unix).  Bash is the default shell for Mac OS X.  Such a book will give you the basics of using the shell.  Most of the commands they will teach you about will work on Mac OS X, although you may run into a few commands that have slightly different options, the basics are still going to be the same.
Or a book on shell programming.
Anyway, browse the books and if you find one that "Speaks to You", then buy it.
There are also some "Mac OS X for Unix Geeks" books available that might give some Mac OS X specific Unix usage, but they also may assume a lot of existing command line knowledge.
The key think to keep in mind, is that 85% to 90% of the Mac OS X command line interface is just like every other Unix/Linux command line interface.  Of course that last 10 - 15% can trip you up, and relates to specific commands and command options that may vary between Unix/Linux implementations.  That being said, a lot of knowledge about another Unix/Linux platform is transferable to the Mac OS X command line.

  • Can you execute a class file without invoking the command line java command

I am running java on a Windows XP equipped machine, and I am wondering if it is possible to execute a class file by double clicking the file icon, or can it only be done via command line. So far I have been unsuccessful in my attempts - I tried associating the class file with the java executable in my JRE directory, but that didn't work.
    Many thanks,
    -Stile

nope, can't be done, by design... microsoft recognised java as threat to the empire very early on in the peace.... but you can write a batch file to execute myprogram.class called myprogram.bat and stick it in your PATH.

  • Can't open profile manager for mac with terminal command

i have tried to open profile manager version 0.3.0 11/4/11 3:31 PM

thanks for your help. this is making me crazy.

yes i did. it is in the applications folder. however, the default path when i open a shell won’t get me there and i don’t know how to change it. it should be /don’t forget to smash the state [my computer’s name]/macintosh hd/applications/browsers/firefox.app [or something to that effect].
also, when i drag profilemanager .app into terminal shell i get
    r-c-wolins-computer:~ rcwolin$ /Applications/ProfileManager.app
    -bash: /Applications/ProfileManager.app: is a directory
does this mean that profilemanager.app is a directory? if it is, how do i access it?
further, if /Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -profilemanager is supposed to be where the command indicates, it isn’t. how do i get it there?
thanks for your help. you bailed me out before when i was perplexed about .sqlite files. i appreciate it.

How can I stop a report service manually in DOS command?
I only know start a report service manually in DOS command. For example:rwserver service=repljbass

My start/stop scripts for Solaris looks like this.
    Start:
    rwserver.sh server=reportserver batch=yes
Note: batch=yes means that the extra control window doesn't start (at least on Unix)
    Stop:
    rwserver.sh server=reportserver shutdown=immediate authid=repadmin/reports
Just remove the .sh and it'll work on your PC.

  • I used a terminal command to show the Library in the User folder, and now the Finder is behaving erractically.  Can anyone tell me how to reverse the show library terminal command?

I used a terminal command in Lion to show the LIbrary in the Users folder, and now the Finder is behaving erratically, hanging up and becoming almost paralyzed.  Can anyone tell me how to reverse the terminal command for show Library.  The command I used was:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

Showing the Library folder will not cause the problem you've described. Nevertheless:
    chflags hidden ~/Library

    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Note, there is no "/" after Library.

  • #30 | can i run the Terminal Command to stop Snapshots with no problems?

i am somewhat surprised to find out that the 75 GB of "Backups" that are taking up space on my MBP may be due to some "feature" in Mavericks or the new OS's or whatever and i have had to MOVE all my data off my laptop as a consequence of this over the last two months because i have no more space on my Hard Drive.
is it legit and OK to follow the terminal commands in #30 without having any problems?
i am on a mid 2009 MBP running Mavericks and i have a 2 TB Time Capsule that i am wirelessly backing up my data.
as some kind of sadistic test in advance of running this terminal command - can i plug my laptop into the Time Capsule, unplug the laptop from the time capsule, restart and see how much space got recaptured on my HD for my data?
i mean, well - i must be missing something but i mean i am hoping i can get this to stop so i can get my data back on my laptop. i'm walking around with an external HD of all my Mac Pro information just so i can get work done when i go to a coffee shop or something.

    In Terminal:
         sudo tmutil disablelocal
Turn off local Time Machine snapshots and trigger automatic cleanup of accumulated local snapshot data. Requires root privileges.
(use sudo tmutil enablelocal to turn back on)
this got rid of my 75 GB backup file (!!) and now i am going to move my data back to my laptop...
not sure if there is an apple tech article to link to regarding this issue but it would be good to post if there is one.

  • HT201250 The initial backup is taking 2 days.  Can I stop and restart without any issues?

Just got an iomega external hard disk backup and the initial backup is said to take two days.  Can I stop and restart without any issues?

On a big backup, the initial estimate is often wrong and gets better after a little while. But, yeah, there is a "Stop backing up" command in the Time Machine menu, right?  That is safe as far as I know.

How can I stop auto download of attachments without tapping on them? Once I open a mail, the attachment automatically starts downloading, though it is written as "tap to download". Please help..

To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to prevent the automatic downloading of the SD version when you buy an HD show.
You can, if you wish, suggest that the ability to prevent the SD version from downloading through the iTunes feedback page. But since the SD version is needed for use on iPods and there at least at present is no mechanism for someone to download the SD version at a later time should they decide they need it, Apple may just continue to force the downloading of both versions. If they get enough feedback on the issue, though, they may figure something out.
    Regards.

Have you tried going to settings - iTunes store - check for rentals? If it does not initially appear try logging out and back into your account.

  • Mac renaming .vcs files to .ics files without prompting... Can I stop it?

I use a site that takes my work schedule and generates a .vcs file that I can import into whatever scheduling program I want...
When I download the file from the website on my PC, it saves it as a .vcs and everything is fine.
When I do the exact same thing on my Mac, it renames the file to 'calendar.vcs.ics' and iCal complains that the file is bad and can't be imported. If I remove the .ics extension so the file is just 'calendar.vcs' iCal is able to import it just fine.
Why is the Mac renaming the file when it gets downloads? How can I stop it? I've tried on 2 different G4 Minis with all the latest updates, and I can't find anything to stop it!
    Thanks in advance!
    Jeff
    G4 Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
It sounds like the file originates as a .vcs file. The Mac is not renaming the file, per se. When downloaded, the Mac (iCal) will by default append the .ics extension since it's eventual home is iCal. Having the .vcs extension already in place prior to the DL is what makes things complicated. iCal will import either file extension, but not both appended.
Although this example from the Apple Knowledge Base is not related, the resolution is probably the same, i.e. you need to manually remove the extension prior to the import into iCal.
