Can i store my movies on the time capsule and access to watch on my new ipad?

can I store my movies on the time capsule and access wireless to watch on my new ipad?

TC is not a media player.. it has no smarts whatsoever.
If you have an app on the ipad to play files.. then the ipad can play files from anywhere.. even the TC.. but the TC contributes nothing. Do not move your itunes library to the TC.. that is asking for trouble.

  • I am thinking about getting a Time Capsule. Can I store a movie on a Time Capsule without the movie being on my MacBook Pro?

Hello, I am considering buying a Time Capsule to store movies and other files on so my hard drive isn't full of stuff all the time. Can I store movies on my Time Capsule even if they are no longer on my MacBook Pro?

    To add to nijinski's comments,
    1) I know i can plug in an aiport express and use it as an thing for speakers in another room, but if i copy my music to a time capsule then can do it? or does it have to be on my mac or laptop?
You could store your iTunes Library on the Time Capsule (TC), but understand that the TC was primarily designed to be a combination router and target destination for Time Machine (TM) backups. It can perform as a NAS or media server, but these are not its strong suite of features. For example, while a backup is being performed, streaming performance will be affected. Since, TM backs up (at least) once an hour, this could get to be problematic.
    2) can i split my time capsule into 2 so i can back up my laptop and mac on it? Or do i need to go with a airport extreme and get an external harddrive?
If your goal is to partition the TC's internal hard drive, you would have to temporarily remove the drive to do so as the AirPort Utility (nor Disk Utility) allows for paritioning this drive when installed.
You CAN backup multiple computers (both Macs & PCs) to the TC, but would have to rely on different backup applications in order to do so. TM backups will NOT overwrite any existing data stored on the TC's hard drive. Another option is to connect one (or more) external USB hard drives to the TC's USB port. You can then dedicate the TC's internal drive for TM backups and use the external drives for other purposes ... like PC backups.
At present, the only issue with going the attached drive to an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) is that Apple does not support this configuration for TM backups.

  • Is it possible to store AppleTV movies on a Time Capsule?

I have a 500TB Time Capsule that has plenty of free disk space... I have an AppleTV that is running low. Is there an easy way to have the AppleTV stream / store purchased movies from the Time Capsule?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
If you are meaning can the TC HDD simply be used as an extension to the tv storage, then no this cannot be done.
What you can of course do is use the TC HDD to accommodate some or all of your itunes library, then it's a simple case of transferring purchases from the tv to itunes, thereby freeing up space on the tv. You can then stream this content when you want to watch it, providing itunes is running on your mac/pc.

  • Can I create pic folders on the time capsule

Can I use the time capsule as a remote hard drive and create my on folders fir remote storage of pictures?

While it is possible to store data other than Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule disk, it is not really recommended since you are taking space away from Time Machine for backups.
If you have plenty of free space, you may be OK. But.....if you store your images on the Time Capsule disk.....you will not have any backups for them, correct?  When....not if....you have a problem with the Time Capsule drive, you will lose all of your images.
A much better and safer plan would be to add an external USB or Firewire hard drive and attach it directly to your Mac. Then, Time Machine will backup both your Mac and the external hard drive. So, you have "originals" on one disk, and "backups" on another disk. If/when one drive fails, you still have copies on another drive.

Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • Trying to restore after getting a new hard drive.  I can see the backup on the Time Capsule and on the correct date but it is Greyed out.  That is it wont let me open it and restore the machine.  Have tried also Migration Assistant, no luck.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

I was having this problem while still using Mavericks -- it started after a Mavericks update last spring.  During the initial Yosemite beta runs over the summer, it seemed to be fixed, but after the official launch in October, I had all sorts of problems keeping connected.  Its gotten a little better, but still happens to at least one of my devices every day.  Weird that we still cannot figure out why the connection keeps dropping on some devices, but not others, and then the next day, one of the devices that didn't disconnect the previous day will disconnect, but the ones that did disconnect, stay connected.  It's just sloppy, poorly written software for technology that isn't working the way it should.  If you turn off Continuity and Handoff on all your devices, you will probably see that everything stays connected.  With those turned off on all devices, TC stayed connected to everything for over a month.  The day I turned Continuity back on, all the problems started again.  It had something to do with the bluetooth version being used, the wifi routine, and Apple's AirPlay technology not quite getting along with each other.

  • Can I connect an external HD on the time capsule and use it as storage space ?

    Hello,
I am thinking about purchasing a time capsule for backing up my data, but I also need storage space for photos and videos, can I connect an external hard drive to the time capsule and use it as storage ? If so, is there any risk of the time machine use the external hd space for backup as well and eat up all the storage ?

can I connect an external hard drive to the time capsule and use it as storage ?
Yes....for storage, as in backup files.  But, not recommended for "working" image or media libraries.
If so, is there any risk of the time machine use the external hd space for backup as well and eat up all the storage ?
No, unless you intend to also use the same drive for Time Machine backups.

  • After copying a movie to the harddisk of my MacBook I wanted to also copy it to my iPad, but for this you first have to copy it to the library in iTunes, but this doesn't seem to be working. So how can I get this movie to the library ? And to the iPad ?

How is it not working?  And how are you doing it?  Drag the movie onto the iTunes icon on the Dock...  what happens?

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.

  • Can I mount external hard drive to Time Capsule and use it as external storage?

I have a 500GB external hard drive that I'd like to use on the Time Capsule as a hard drive to store mp3 and mp4 files.  Can I attach it to the Time Capsule and use it like this?  Or does it just give an additional 500GB worth of back ups from my iMac?

Can I attach it to the Time Capsule and use it like this?
Yes, if the drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)...preferable....or FAT32. Access to the files will somewhat slower than if you had the drive attached directly to your computer.
Have you given some thought as to how you will keep this drive backed up?
Time Machine will not be able to back up the drive that is attached to the Time Capsule's USB port.
But, it would be able to back up the drive if you connected it directly to your Mac and the drive was formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Your pro doesn't matter.. I presume it is happily working.
Your imac setup has got messed up because you changed from a local (my book being USB type I presume) to network drive. Did you do a clean install of Lion?
Did you use the backup from the Pro on the imac? Otherwise I don't see how the Pro shows up in use previous disk. Where is Pondini when you need him??
You cannot download Time Machine as an App and replace the current version. It is built into the OS.. the only way to do it is a clean install. Unfortunately that might be the only way around the issue.
There is a number of issues that Pondini has covered in the setup issues of troubleshooting.
This is the most relevant I think. http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html
But look at the whole section B setup problems.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If it was me, I would store all the info you need.. not using TM but using a straight copy of files.
Then clean install Lion. I doubt any of these issues would exist if you had not installed Lion over existing setup or used a different backup.
See if you can get Pondini to respond.. !!

  • I have a new MacBook Pro, it has a small hard drive, can I plug an extra Hard Drive into my time capsule and access from my Macbook?

I have saved my itunes Library to an exteranal drive, can I plug that drive into my Time Capsule and tell my itunes to access the music from there?
    TH

Yes, but it's probably better to keep it connected directly to the computer.

  • What is the default ip address for the Time Capsule and Airport Extreme?

What is the default ip address for the Time Capsule and Airport Extreme?

Open Airport Utility to find out the real IP address of the network connection. DHCP addresses are assigned by the router in the range chosen in Airport Utility.
