Can I store old operating system while using current one?

I am currently running MountainLion 10.8.3 and need to use Snow Leopard 10.6 for use with an old GPS device that needs this system to download maps. Can I download and keep SnowLeopard for use with some older devices then run Mountain Lion?

The safest way is to run Snow Leopard in a virtual machine under 10.8, this works enough for what your needing without being hardware demanding also it works on Mac's that never had 10.6 at all, like the ones with 10.7 and 10.8
Unfortuntly it's a hack, you can find out how to go about it on the MacRumors forums.
If your machine had Snow Leopard at one time and you don't have BootCamp, then you can use Disk Utility or the BootCamp software to create a second partition on your boot drive. If you use Bootcamp software to create the partition, you have to change the partition in Disk Utiltiy to "Snow Leopard" and give it a OS X Extended Journaled format.
Once the partition is created, then you can hold c or option/alt on a wired or built in keyboard to boot from the 10.6 machine disks (or if your Mac originally came from the factory with pre-10.6.2 can use the white 10.6 retail disks) and install Snow Leopard into the Snow Leopard partition only.
Holding option/alt key at boot will then allow you to boot directly into either 10.8 or 10.6
You can also install Snow Leopard on a external powered drive, it has to first be formatted Partition 1, Option: GUID and Format OS X Ext J first in Disk Utility, then repeat the same 10.6 install procedure.
The advantage of it being on a external drive is it's less risky than messing with your internal drive, but it's slower a bit than being on the faster internal connections.

Since your Mac probably came with 10.4, there is no longer a way to get 10.5 Leopard install media. IF it has the requirements, you may be able to upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard by buying the boxed install media at the Apple Store for $30.

There is no difference, you didnt get "shorted" Mavericks is a FREE DOWNLOAD
Open the APP store and download Mavericks.
You didnt buy a "clearance" item, you just got an Air that was there at the shop before Mavericks was released.
There is no difference other than a 40 min. download.

    What was your old system?
    What is your new System?
    What version of Pages?
    How did you install it?
I don't know if you can see what's on my screen, but I definitely can't see what's on yours.

I just bought a slightly newer G4 and I want to find out if it is possible to transfer my old OS 10.2.8 system from one computer to the other so I can run my old ProTools system without a hitch. I would rather not buy the old 10.2.8 system as it is expensive. Thanks!

Need to know which newer one, some cannot run 10.2.x.
One solution might be to clone the 10.2.8 Drive to another drive, then Install a later OS on it Preserving Users & Settings.
Best way to get an exact bootable copy of your old drive to the new one is with Carbon Copy Cloner...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • I just bought a new MacBook Pro and it came with the old operating system, how do I upgrade it to the latest one without having to purchase it?

    Hi,
Im a new Mac user. I currently just bought a new MacBook Pro. The first computer I got apparently had a problem with the flex, so I had to go change it for a new one. The first one had the latest operating system, the second one the store gave me didn't, yet it's still a brand new computer, so I don't see why I should have to pay for the new operating system, which should already come with my brand new computer. So I am trying to contact apple so they may give me permission to download it from the app store for free, due to this inconvenience and first bad experience. The vendor tells me that sometimes new computers may come with old operating systems because they're from an old batch of new computers. Oh and by the way, I'm from Honduras, and bought it at Jetstereo, in Tegucigalpa (the capital). This store is a licensed distributor.
    Hope someone can help me,
    Ankie Zapata

Go to the Mac App Store main page and click on Support under Quick Links.

  • Want old operating system back

I have an iPad 2., which I have loved. Caused me to switch over to all Apple products. I foolishly updated to iOS 8.0.2, and have encountered constant frustrations ever since. I tried to go back to iOS 7, but it is no longer available. From what I understand, I can pay to get this.  Very frustrated with Apple.  Why should I have to pay to fix a problem they created?  Thinking so switching back to Android if this is the post Steve Jobs way of doing business. Any ideas on how to go back to old operating system withou having to pay for it?

Whoever told you you needed to pay to go back is mistaken. There is no supported way to roll back iOS updates. There never has been even if you pay.
If you are having issues with iOS 8 what have you attempted to try to fix them?
Try these basic troubleshooting steps if you haven't already:
    1. Reset the iPad.  Hold down the home and power/sleep buttons until the Apple Logo shows up.
If this does not solve the issues:
    2. Reset Settings.  Settings->General->Reset->Reset all Settings. The iPad Should reboot.
If this still does not fix the issues
    3. Restore the iPad to Factory Condition. This should refresh the iOS installation and is known to clear out many bugs and glitches.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

  • Updating an old operating system

I can't update my iphone on my old macbook.  I was told at the genius bar its because my operating system is too old, I have 10.5.  How can I update my operating system?

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Other countries...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...

  • HT5624 I don't want Icloud.  I believe it drains the battery of my phone.  How do I get the old operating system back on my new iphone 4G?

I just got a new upgrade iphone from a 3G to 4G.  My son updated the software with Icloud.  I do not like it, it drains my battery.  How do I get the old operating system back (without icloud).  Also, I don't know how to close an APP anymore and I think that could be draining my battery as well.  It doesn't work the same way when I doubled click and then touch the APP it doesn't give me a dash to close it up again.

Apple does not support downgrading the iOS.
As for icloud, go to   Settings>icloud, scroll to bottom of screen and tap Delete Account.
    As for battery drain...
    Look through this...
    http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/19/ios-7-battery-life-fix/
Also, Settings>General>Background App Refresh:   turn off apps you don't want refreshing data - this can preserve battery life.
Also try a reboot:  press and hold the home and power buttons until the Apple icon is displayed, then let go.

  • Can I store photos from ipad while travelling for later download to my mac desktop

can I store photos from ipad while travelling for later download to my mac desktop

If you mean by using photo stream, you can but iCloud only keeps photo stream photos for 30 days.  You will need to download them to your Mac during this 30 day window or they will no longer be available.
Or, just leave the photos in the camera roll on your iPad until you return, then import them to iPHoto on your Mac as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

You will need Snow Leopard which is available as a retail disk for $29 from the Apple store or online resellers. Make sure your Mac meets the system requirements; 1 GB RAM is the absolute minimum - 2 GB would be better.
