Can I store the apps in my iTunes library on an external hdd but keep my music on my mac

can I store the apps in my iTunes library on an external hdd but keep my music on my mac?
thanks

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
i wouldn't - at least not until i
mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • ITunes Library - Move to external HD, but keep extracting on laptop.  How?

    Appleoids--
I am preparing to buy an iPod. Therefore, I am converting my entire CD collection to AAC-128 on my laptop at work via "Copy & Eject" with a stack of CDs as I work. Due to the size of my collection, this will go on for months and my laptop is filling up.
I bought an external firewire hard drive. My intent is to sync my future iPod from the extrenal drive when it is plugged hooked to my laptop. I did some research and found how to move my library from my laptop to my external hard drive.
However, after I move the library, I will be continuing to extract music from my CDs to AAC at work without the external HD hooked up. It appears to me that iTunes is set up so that if you import from CDs, it only loads into the library. So I'm unclear what will happen when I try to extract AACs from CDs when the external drive is not connected. I don't see how to have a second library or how to extract without storing the resulting AACs in the libarary. Also, I am unclear how I would extract the new extractions from my laptop and add them to my external HD libarary.
It appears iTunes/iPod sync works seamlessly if you have one computer with a hard-drive that will hold all your music. Beyond that, you need a phD in iTunes to figure out how to make things work.

OK, Bruce--That was clear and I'm very close to understanding this. Your answer to the "Consolidate Library" causes me some disturbance, however. Not in your answer, but in the way iTunes does this, as that's NOT what I need.
I basically keep two sets of music. One is stuff I record and manipulate, or download live music from torrents, the other is CDs I rip. The first doesn't go into the iTunes music folder, at least not until I convert it to AAC after manipulating it for later use on my iPod. Basically, the iTunes music folder itself is what I want consolidated, and what I will use for lossy files for use in syncing my future iPod. But I often listen to the full, unedited, lossless files in iTunes, which means iTunes is 'aware' of them (i.e. they are in the library now). So even if I remove the playlist, I think they are still in the library. I sure as **** wouldn't want every full-size, giant sound file in the iTunes library, but not in the iTunes music folder, copied to an external drive!
What I want is for every file IN MY iTunes MUSIC FOLDER to be copied to the external drive. That is, all my AACs and mp3's that I intend to listen to on the iPod. Short of going through thousands of library entries and removing all references to other files, and never listening to 'other' files on iTunes again, is there a way to do this? I'm looking for a 'Consolidate Old iTunes Music Folder into New iTunes Music Folder on External Hard Drive' function. I think there is a way to do this with xml editing or something, but my brain isn't that big.
ANOTHER QUESTION - Making Tags in iTunes
I am ripping a bunch of live recordings from Jam bands that a friend gave me. Of course, none of these concerts are in GraceNote. So iTunes says "import anyway?" and I say yes. Then, while it's ripping I do a command-A, command-I and do a group tag change. Problem is, though all are marked, the first track ends up in the "Unknown" folder. I guess it can't get tagged and rip at the same time. Is there an easy way to halt the import until all the tags are marked, or something else that will achieve the same result?

  • When i go to sync my apps with my computer it tells me  ''are you sure you want to sync apps ? all exsisting apps and there data on (iphone) will be replaced with the apps on this itunes library'' does this mean all my data will be lost if i continue ?

when i go to sync my apps with my computer it tells me  ''are you sure you want to sync apps ? all exsisting apps and there data on (iphone) will be replaced with the apps on this itunes library'' does this mean all my data will be lost if i continue ?

Regarding your broken, previously authorized computer, here's how that works:
You would authorize your new computer -- maybe you've done that already.  Then you will have two computers authorized.  Apple allows you to have up to five computers authorized at any time.  If you get to five, you can then go to your account details in iTunes and remove all authorizations.
Bear in mind this is not saying you can synch to more tham one library.  Razmee209 and gdgmacguy's comments above are correct.  But if Apple only allowed you to authorize one computer at a time, then having a broken computer would mean you could no longer use your Apple ID with iTunes.

  • If I purchased apps with one Itunes account (hotmail) can I convert the apps to an Itunes (ME) account?

I purchased apps with one Itunes account (hotmail).  I then changed my account sign-in to a different email sign-in (ME) because of iCloud.  Can I easily convert the apps to an Itunes (ME) account when an update for each app occurrs?

Did you change your existing iTunes account or did you create a new account ? If you updated the existing account then you should be ok.  But if you created a new account, then as apps are tied to the account that originally bought/downloaded them and they can't be copied or transferred to a different account, only that original account will be able to download any future updates to them or re-download them on a different device.

  • HT1660 Can I geotag the songs in my iTunes library?

I would like the ability to geotag the songs in my iTunes library -  essentially Places for iTunes. Is there currently any way to do this? Any plans for it? Once I thought of it, it seemed so obvious that I could not believe it was not already possible.
There are some music streaming utilities that do something similar for social networks, but I am not interested in that.

That usually indicates an incomplete download.  Did you try tapping the song to see if it would continue to download and play?  Also be sure you are either connected to wifi, or have Use Cellular Data turned on in Settings>iTunes & App Store so you can access it over your cellular data connection.

  • Using ONE iTunes library on an external HDD with TWO Separate Macs

I have been battling for some time to run one iTunes library on my 160GB Passport between both my 12" iBook G4 and my 15" Macbook Pro.
While I understand the concept of using the SHIFT-key when booting iTunes to Choose the Library it does not appear to work the way I imagine it should.
The Library is managed on the Macbook Pro and merely used on the iBook.
Updates done on the Macbook Pro do not carry across without doing a full consolidation with the Library.
    Please Help.

  • Can I share the App's in iTunes between my iPhone and iPod Touch?

I have an iPhone and I am getting a Touch for my daughter. If I have her set up as a different user on my pc and the iTunes library is shared so we can share the music and not mess up each other’s play lists and ratings can we also share the App’s (paid and/or free)? Thanks, Robert

That is good and thank you.
When my app's are in iTunes under my user on the pc if I go to her user on the pc will the app's just be there or will I have to do something to get them in her iTunes? With music when in her user I just drag them from the music folder under my name into the iTunes that is open under her user and they are load. Is it the same for the app's or not? Thanks, Robert

  • When I have my iTunes library on an external drive, but I forget to connect my external drive before opening iTunes, so then iTunes creates a library taking up room on my MacBook Air, can I just delete the iTunes library folder on my MacBook Air?

So I have a MacBook Air, but it doesn't have a lot of storage inside of it. So I set iTunes to sort all media files (it copies things as I add them and puts them in the iTunes folder) and I set the iTunes folder to my external ntfs drive. This has been working fine, but I find that sometimes iTunes starts adding stuff to the folder on the Air itself. I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected, or what, but is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air? Otherwise it keeps building up multiple GBs. Or will just deleting it do something bad with my lecture videos and music when I sync an iOS device? I'm really worried about doing something wrong with my large collection and have iTunes delete it or not sync with my iOS device and I won't be able to figure out how to set everything up again.
Also, should I format my drive to HFS+ rather than ntfs? The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know. I keep everything on my external and sometimes it needs to interact with friends computers or school computers.

  • How do i (easily) store only PART of my iTunes library on an external disk?

i have a LOT of music to digitize and not a lot of space left in my powerbook. i want to keep this music on an external drive for later. i do not need to play it (for now) and i do not connect to this external drive often.
should i just drag the song folders or artist folders out of the iTunes folder on my laptop and onto the external drive?
or, is there some sort of cool way (play list?) that will let me keep them catalogued in iTunes even though unavailable?
pb g4 12 (first one)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   want a new one

so dude, it would be better to put it all. You can't just put part because itunes needs to draw the songs from one place. So what you do is drag your whole itunes folder to your external hard drive then when it is all transported go to preferences and select advanced. Hit general and change the itunes music folder location to the iTunes music folder within the itunes folder. Also select keep library organized. It will automatically update you library, organize, and transport any imports to your external hard drive. Finally, it is safe to delete the folder from your computer. DO NOT DELETE FROM ITUNES! Delete the whole folder library on your computer. Remember to connect the hard drive when ever you open itunes, and if you forget repeat the steps to as stated before to draw the songs from the hard drive. Hope this helps. It helped me free up soooo much space on my computer.
