Can I stream content from my laptop to Apple TV?

I have the old version of AppleTV, am looking at the new one. I don't think it does this, and I've read through the sales/features page and I'm still not perfectly clear so thought I'd ask here.
Can I use AppleTV to stream video content from my laptop to a TV? for example, let's say I have a webinar that is 90 minutes long and I'd like to watch it on my TV and not sit at my computer staring at a smaller screen for 90 minutes. can AppleTV do this for me?
if the answer is no, can ANYTHING do this for me short of hooking up a physical HDMI cable from my laptop to the tv? Seems like this is something Apple should be leading the way with, but I'm just not seeing how it can be done.

I've set everything else up but cannot figure out how to display my laptop screen onto my TV.
As Keithjammer indicates, the TV2 does not "mirror" your screen as the platform's video interface does. Instead, the TV2 device is a wired/wireless remote multimedia player. As such, it only plays files in a compatible compression format. To do what you want it to do would require your platform to first compress the screen audio/video data to a compatible format and then stream it to the device in real time.

Yes, only files can be streamed. You can, of course, capture your screen audio and video data to a compatible file and then stream the file to the TV2 device.
...except from both London Drugs (where I purchased it) and Best Buy (where I double checked).

How can I stream video from my laptop to apple tv while doing a different task on my laptop?  I want to be able to stream a video to my tv while browsing the internet or working on writing on my laptop. Thanks

You would have to use airplay within iTunes then, unless you want to use 3rd party software (ie Beamer)

You have answered my question, thank you so much, I've just plugged in and found out that a direct connection will actually work via ethernet, but it works as Airplay mirroring and itune home sharing
No you don't need to use AirPlay from the computer to AppleTV.
Just use the AppleTV as you would with wifi. Everything is controlled from the AppleTV.

  • E4200 - Can't stream content from direct attched storage

I did not have any issues with the Linksys routers except for:
One major issue I had with Linksys E4200 and E3000 was with regards to content sharing/streaming.
Linksys allows you to attach an external storage to the router and share the content with other computers. However, this product nor the earlier, E3000, didn't allow streaming via TV, bluray or media with DNLA capability.
We could attach a storage to the router then map that in other computer and by providing a username/password you could access the content.
These TV's and blurays do not have the ability of providing a username/password to the router to be recognized. Which your tech support missed to understand and instead advised me to open up a port on TV! (WHY?). Unfortunately, your tech support couldn't get this part and suggested to install the Samsung AllShare software on the External drive! Which I explained over the phone, that NAS/external storage doesn't have an OS to host the software.
Therefore, TV/Bluray can't stream content from the attached storage, Although TV/bluray could see the Media attached to router.
That is deal breaker. There should be an option in the router to allow the devices in internal network to be able to stream media from an attached Storage.
I chatted with Linksys support twice with regards to E3000. Both stated as long as I could map the drive on another computer then there were no problem. So what about your statement about upnp "The built-in UPnP AV Media Server enables seamless streaming of video and media files on your attached storage to an Xbox 360, PS3, or other UPnP compatible device"? That is why I didn't bother chatting when I got the E4200.
Just a note that Linksys support test the streaming via Seagate 2TB External drive and a 2G Kingston Traveler USB flash drive (since USB flash was in the list of tested USB storage).
This is matter of some thinking, few hours of developers work, QA and a firmware update.

    OK,
Got a new E3000, and I updated the firmware to the latest.
Now going to format a supported USB Key,/External drive and attached it to see what will happen.
    I will do as follow;
1- Now, today I will reset the device as it was advised previously, meaning holding the reset botton at the end for 30 secound and then wait for it to comeup. Or just unplug it for 30 secound?
2- Will enable the Media Server
3- Specify which folders to be scanned for media, I will leave it as is cause I want the whole USB to be scanned
So When I insert and format the USB with the Router, it will create a directory call public and andother inside this one call public.  I will place my file in that folder as follow
    \public\public\mymovie.avi
will scan the USB key/flash drive, or should I specify anything? please let me know I am noob in that scanning part
specify the interval I will set it to every hours for today and then laterto 24 hours.

No, Sky have blocked this function (at least, they have on Now TV, which they own)

  • Can I stream video from my mac to apple tv the same way my ipad or ipod does?

I just got my AppleTV hoping to stream video to it from my iMac.  I'm seeing this is possible with mirroring, but there was a ton of lag between the computer and tv, and the sound and video would skip horribly.  I plugged the ATV into our ethernet and that has helped tremendously, but there is still some visual lag and skipping going on with the video, noticable enough to drive me crazy when watching something like a movie.
However, I noticed that when I stream the same video to ATV with my iPad, it uses a method other than mirroring; the video is greyed out on the iPad with the ATV symbol on it and sends the video to the tv instead, and it plays seamlessly!  I wish I could say this is the solution to my own problem, but most videos I wish to watch are in a flash format, which does not work on iPad and I would therefore need to use my iMac instead.
So, leading back to the title now, is it possible to stream a video on the iMac without using mirroring, such as how ever it is the iPad and iPod are able to do it?
My iMac is the newest model currently out I believe.  27", i7 intel processor.  The AppleTV is also the newest generation I believe.  I just got both barely two weeks ago from the store here.
Any help is appreciated, let me know if you need any more information.
    Thanks!

  • How can I stream videos from my browers with apple tv to my tv?

Is it possible to stream the content of my webbrowser,i.e. videos to my tv with Apple tv? in some videos the airplay button appears in some not?
Any idea? Or does not work at all?
    Thx

Some apps support airplay and others do not, it is the choice of the app developer.  You can mirror far more from your browser IF your mac book pro is early 2011 or newer (mid 2011 for all other macs) and you run OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.  For older macs third party apps such as airparrot or reflectorapp will help.  I have successfully watched tv series through mirror (albeit older ones in SD) with excellent quality using mirror and safari.

  • Can't stream Music from iTunes to my Apple TV

I bought an ATV for the sole purpose of being able to stream music from my PC iTunes account to my Samsung smart TV.  As it turns out, that is the one thing my ATV will not do.  I have had my ATV for about three months and have never been able to stream music to it from my PC.  I do not see my ATV as a device in iTunes and I do not have the airplay icon visible in iTunes
    Gear
    3rd generation ATV
    PC running Windows 7
Here are some things which work fine on the ATV:
Netflix works perfectly e.g., it sees my wifi network
    Youtube works perfectly
Under Music I can see the 2 songs my wife purchased from the iTunes store – I purchase all my music from Amazon.
    Things I have done
Turned Home Sharing on and am using the same account in iTunes and on my ATV
    Reinstalled iTunes – 11.0.2.26
    Updated ATV to latest software
Rebooted my computer – several times
Rebooted my router – several times
How do I resolve this issue?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried a new approach and unplugged my ATV brought it over to my computer and connected it to my router via ethernet.  This caused the airplay icon to show up on the transport bar in iTunes.  I could select the ATV as an output.  I disconnected the ethernet cable and reconnected the ATV to my TV.  The airplay icon remains in iTunes but the ATV is no longer there as an option - only my computer speakers.  Any ideas?

  • How can i stream movies from my pc to apple tv

I would like to stream HULU movies that are on my PC to Apple TV. How can that be done?

Only compatible video files from itunes can be streamed from a computer.
If these are downloaded and unprotected files rather than streaming in a browser you may be able to convert them and add to iTunes.

  • Can I stream Xfinity from my Ipad to Apple TV

I just purchased Apple TV and I want to sent my Xfinity content from my Ipad to my TV. I thought I could do this with Airplay but I can't find any instructions on how to do so.

I with you on this one Harry. That's is just ridiculous option. What 50 different network apps to forever toggle on and off. Perpetual searching through showtime listings. The technology is there and being created by innovative, amazing people and companies. And it's all being held back (and our freedom to create at personal entertainment ecosystem that works for us as individuals) by a few of these cable companies. They're bloated, grotesquely outdated, Poorly serviced and immensly over-priced. The potential is already there. Better service by better companies. MUCH faster speeds are capable. Better quality products. And more importantly, freedom to have what you want, the way you want in. All of this is being throttled by cable companies. You could go on and on. FCC's no better. Typical story. Regulated agencies with too much, money, power and influence.  Blah blah blah.
Anyway, Comcast are a bunch of hacks. Why can't I AirPlay from the app on my iPad. Why? Give me a valid reason? I look forward to the day that something/someone razes that crappy empire and it's lifetime if executives to the ground and there's nothing left but rubble.

  • Can you stream movies from time machine to apple tv

Can you stream purchased movies from Apple Time Machine to Apple TV?
I have both an Apple TV and an Apple Time Machine. Both great devices BUT my internet connection is not great and apparently, the telephone exchange needs to be upgraded in order for it to improve and right now, the phone company has no plans to upgrade the exchange . So, I've bought movies from Apple TV and have downloaded them (using Apple TV) and watched them. They seem to stay on Apple TV for a few days before they need to be downloaded again if I (actually my kids) want to watch the movie again. Problem is, it takes about 15 hours to download a regular movie due to the poor internet connection. My kids don't have that much patience. I know I can download a movie onto my Mac and stream it from there to Apple TV but that means I have to have the Mac available. Since I work at an office and take my MacBook to use at work, it isn't always there for the kids to get their daily Frozen hit. See the issue I face? Apple TV and Apple Tme Machine are great devices. Can they be used in conjunction with one another?
So, what I was wondering, is it possible to stream from Apple Time Machine to Apple TV, i.e. use Time Machine to store your movies for Apple TV?
    Thanks
    Philip

    No.
    Time Machine is an application.
Time Capsule is hardware (what you have).
As suggested, you download them to iTunes and they will work fine on the AppleTV.

Yes but you need a computer running iTunes.

  • Can you stream Netflix from an iPad to Apple TV?

    Hi,
We have a relatively small TV set and sit relatively far away from it. Therefore making Netflix choices with Apple TV and remote is difficult, since the print is too small. It would be way easier to make Netflix choices with the iPad on my lap, and have the iPad stream the movie to ATV.
Airplay works well with Apple apps like iTunes & iPhoto, but does it work with non Apple apps? If so, how does one get it to work?
    Thanks,
    Klaus

  • Can't stream content from PC - please help!

Is there a techy person out there who can help me please?
We have a Sony BluRay/Home theatre system, a desktop PC and a couple of laptops connected our home network, run on a BT homehub (v 2 I think - the curved black one - not the latest one on the adverts).
Until recently all was fine and we were able to stream movies etc from the PC to the TV via the home theatre system. Then about a week ago a BT engineer came out (about the 6th guy to try to solve our speed/connection dropping problems; BT are on "last chance" before we cancel, but don't get me started on that!!) Anyway all worked fine till this latest guy came and tweaked whatever he tweaked, and now the PC doesn't show up on the network. We've tried restarting the PC, resetting the hub and various bits in the home theatre system's set-up, but nothing works. We're no experts (clearly!) but we're not complete technophobes either and we don't know what else to try. Any ideas??? thanks

    Try this first.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your .Mac account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings below for the .Mac SMTP server.
Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.
Test if this resolves the problem.

  • Can I stream content on AirPort Extreme to Apple TV?

    Hello,
I am considering purchasing a AirPort Extreme.  I am wondering if I can stream the content saved on the hard drive through Apple TV?
    Thanks.

Do you have a hacked (JB is term used here).. atv1 or atv2 the answer is yes..
If you have a standard ATV or ATV3 which is not hackable.. then the answer is no. Your files can be stored on the disk plugged in.. but there is nothing in the AE to stream it... it is a router not a media computer. It has no brains.. at all..
See the poem.. Banjo Patterson. The man from ironbark. http://www.middlemiss.org/lit/authors/patersonab/poetry/ironbark.html
There were some gilded youths that sat along the barber's wall.
    Their eyes were dull, their heads were flat, they had no brains at all;
That is what you need to think of the Airport Extreme.. it has a flat head.. dull eyes..no brains.. Same applies to the TC btw.. where other brands might include DLNA server, itunes server.. twonky media server.. apple has none.. So you must hava a computer running to pick up the files from the AE or TC to stream it to the network. so the ATV.. can pickup the stream and send it to video.
