Can I swap memory from a late 2012 mini to a late 2010 mini

I just upgraded the memory on my late 2012 mini.  I'm wondering if I can swap this memory into my late 2010 mini.  They are both DDR 3 204 pins.

See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4432
As you can see, the Late 2012 Mac mini uses PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 MHz RAM, and the Mid 2010 Mac mini uses PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz RAM, so the Mid 2010 Mac mini can't use the memory of your Late 2012 Mac mini because it isn't compatible with 1600 MHz RAM. If you try to install it, the Mac mini won't boot.
In your case, if you want more memory for the Mid 2010 Mac mini, you have to buy memory that meets the requirements of the Mid 2010 Mac mini in OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_Mac_mini/DDR3 Then, you have the steps to install the RAM in the first page I gave you

  • Can I take RAM from MacBook Pro 2012 and install in MacBook 2010

I am upgrading a MacBook Pro 2012 from 8G to 16GB of RAM
Can I take the old 2x4G RAM DIMMS and install them in my daughters White MacBook 13" 2010 (7,1)
    Thanks...

Your 2012 tech specs state 1600 MHz:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/index-macbookpro.html
whereas the 2010 white Macbook takes 1066 MHz:
So, the answer would be no.

  • I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.

I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.
According to Cruicial my mac mini could use:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64
Also According to Cruical my iMac uses:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V
I want to increase the ram in both computers.
So,  can I put the iMac ram in my mac mini and then I'd only have to buy ram for my iMac?  Naturally the ulitmate test will be when I actually install it,  but having an expectation of success or failure will allow me to plan on what to spend money on.
    Thanks,
    Bear

Thanks for the responses.  I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini.  2 is not enough.  8 for my imac is okay for now.
Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed.  It seems that I am incorrect.
    Thanks,

can not change dates from 2011 to 2012 in Elements 9 photoshop

Thanks for the help. That was exactly  the fix I needed. With the expense of the photoshop software you'd think the company would fix stuff like this via updates. Merry Christmas.

  • AirDrop transfer between Mac mini (late 2012) and MacBook Pro (late 2008) works only one way.

AirDrop transfer between Mac mini (late 2012) and MacBook Pro (late 2008) works only one way.  I see both machines on both airdrop windows. Firewalls on both machines are set exactly the same way, and with Network Browser set to allow.  Can send a file from Mac mini to MacBook, but not the other way.  Never get a window asking to accept on the Mac mini.
Found no useful documentation on AirDrop anywhere in the whole support site.

Maybe this will work. From an Apple support article.
You can also use the Share button to send files to your neighbors via AirDrop. In a Finder window, select the item you want to share, and then click the Share button in the toolbar. For more information about the Share button, see this help topic:

  • Can I connect my late-2012 iMac to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro?

I've just bought a new late 2012 27" iMac and also have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro.
I also purchased a Thunderbolt cable, is there anyway I can use this to connect the two? If not... do I have any options for file sharing between the two?

The Thunderbolt cable is useless to connect both Macs. Mid 2010 MacBooks Pro have got Mini DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt.
If you want to use Target Disk Mode in order to connect both Macs, you have to buy two things: the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, and a FireWire cable to connect the adapter and the MacBook. You have to connect the Thunderbolt adapter to the Thunderbolt port of the iMac.
Then, if you want to transfer old files from the backup, you can use Migration Assistant if you want to migrate applications and user accounts (if you haven't set up the iMac, use Setup Assistant. If you want to transfer individual files, use Target Disk Mode

  • What is best mac mini for easy video editing? Late 2012 quad-core or late 2014 double core?

    Hi!
I want to buy Mac mini and don't know which one is best for me. Please don't tell me to buy anything else, because it is my choise. I only need to know what is better:
Upgradable late 2012 version with quad core i7, 2.3GHz, 8gb of RAM and Intel HD Graphics 4000
    or
Non-upgradable late 2014 version with dual core i5, 2.6 GHz, 8 gb of RAM and Iris graphic card.
I do short videos with a few effects, transactions, fades, titles, sometimes add CC. So which Mac mini do you recommend, guys?

as a windows/premiere user i can only speak to the hardware. 8gb ram in either should be fine for short & simple projects. the i7 is alot better, however the hd graphics 4000 is not as good as the iris and may require running the mercury engine as software only. this means no using the video card to help premiere run faster. anything outside of premiere using the cpu for day to day tasks would also appreciate the i7.  depending on the model of the iris graphics, it may be a couple times faster than the hd 4000 and therefore might work in premiere. according to adobe it lists the Intel Iris Graphics 5100 and 5200 as working  System requirements | Adobe Premiere Pro  if you get into other adobe apps, the graphics wont matter as much and the i7 will run faster.  it is faster video vs faster cpu, which to pick...

  • Can I swap ram from a Powermac G4 400 PCI into a Powermac G4 Quicksilver?

    Hi,
I have a Powermac G4 400mhz PCI, but I'm looking at getting a Powermac G4 Quicksilver 933. I wondered if I can swap some ram from my Powermac G4 PCI into a Quicksilver.
I have gone to the Crucial website and it says the Powermac G4 PCI and the Powermac G4 Quicksilver both take SDRAM, PC133.
But in my Haynes Mac manual it says the Powermac G4 requires SDRAM, PC100.
Who is correct? I would rather swap of course to save money.
    Thanks.

    Hi, thanks for the replys.
I have gone into about this Mac, more info and this is the info I get about the memory:
    DIMM3/J22:
    Size: 256 MB
    Type: Unknown
    Speed: Unknown
    Status: OK
I have recently upgraded to 10.4.8.
I'm sure under 10.4.5 a lot of the info for my ram was not 'unknown'.
Are there any utilities out there that will give me more ram info?
On the Crucial website they have one but it is for PC's only. I'm sure one of the 256 ram sticks are PC133 SDRAM as I bought a ram stick from Crucial about a year ago.
    Thanks again.

  • Can I use memory from my old G4 laptop in a new iMac?

My old PowerBook G4 (PowerPC) just died and I know that I have some extra RAM installed in it that I can remove.  Last year, I bought an iMac and would love to be able to use my old RAM in my iMac - will the Intel iMac be able to support my old PowerPC RAM that was in my laptop?  What about my MacPro at work running Mac OSX 10.7.4?
I'm just not sure if the new hardware in the iMac/MacPro will be compatible with the older hardware from my PPC.

You can go to http://www.everymac.com and look up the memory in the old Mac and the new and compare, but the answer is going to be no, the older memory will not be compatible with the new iMac.  Different modules, chips, speed, etc.

  • Can you swap drives from old mac to new mac?

Hi. I see new mac pros came out today and I want to get one. If I sell my current mac, can I just take out my drives and put them into the new one so I don't have to reinstall all my stuff?
Will the new system recognize the new processors and fsb and just reconfigure, or will some of the system files be screwed up?

    Hi lisamel;
Probably not. The reason I say this is because the new Mac will probably have updated drives in the system that are not in your old system. What you can do is to take the old drive and install it into the new Mac and when it starts up the first time it will ask if you want to migrate from an old system. If you tell it yes, you can then point it at the disk from the old Mac and it will move everything over from the old disk but retain the new system.

  • Increase swap memory

    Hi guys,
I'm trying to run some strain calculations but my PC keeps running out of memory (first the RAM (4gb) and after that the swap memory (1GB), checked it with free). I know that for these particular calculations <8GB of memory should suffice. Does anybody know how to increase the swap memory from 1GB to 4GB without reinstalling arch linux?
    Cheers,
    Joris

    1) replace swap with swapfile
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Swap
    2) set properly swappiness:
    vm.swappiness = 100
number corresponds to % of swap than can be used
    set
    vm.vfs_cache_pressure=500
you can adjust these settings permanently via /etc/sysctl.conf or temporarily:
    sysctl -w vm.swappiness="100"
these settings will not affect system performance if RAM memory is not exhausted but will help if swap is needed.
