Can I swap old iMac (white) HARD DRIVE into iMac (alu) w/ OS installed

I have the older iMac 20" intel with a 500GB hard drive and wanted to swap it into my newer iMac 20" aluminum, which currently has the 320GB hard drive. I was wondering if the disks were physically swapped, would the OS still run considering the newer hardware?
Would Leopard be able to recognize the hardware changes or would a backup, reinstall and restore be in order? I am trying to avoid having to move all my data to an external only to put it back on again the same drive. Thank you!

Physically the drive is swappable but not without voiding your warranty. As for the system goes theoretically it would work however since the ALU iMacs are newer than your current white iMac, your current system lacks all of the hardware drivers for the new iMac and the system would need to be reinstalled. Probably the easiest way would be to use the migration assistant to migrate your files from your old computer. However if you still plan on swapping the drives what you could do is swap the 500G into your new iMac then immediately boot up to the install disk that comes with the ALU iMac and perform an Archive install of the system. It would be a good idea to backup all of your data before physically moving the drive just in case.

  • Can I swap my existing MacBook Hard Drive into my a New MacBook Pro

I have a macbook black running snow leopard with 500gb seagate HD and am looking to upgrade to a Macbook pro. Can I swap the HDs? Will the MacBook Pro boot up?
    How do i do it?
I have an extra new 320GB HD, which i would like to put into the Black macbook; I have the Snow Leopard upgrade in a 5 pack. Can I use it to give the Hard Drive a clean install? Will it pick up what it needs from the Snow Leopard install?

Not necessarily. As I said the new models have a different build installed. The build you are now using may not work because it will not contain all the needed new hardware drivers. You can give it a try. If it doesn't work properly then you will need to reinstall OS X using the installer discs that come with the new computer.

  • Why can't I see my external hard drive, Intel iMac / 500 GB, G-Drive

Why can't I see my external hard drive?  I have a new iMac, Intel based i5, running Lion (2-3 months old).  I have a 500 GB G-Drive external hard drive that has showed up when connected to my iMac for the past 2-3 months.  Now it's gone.  It's NOT visible when using Disk Utilities.  I have all of the radio buttons chosen in the Finder Preferences.  I've unplugged and replugged in the drive, have switched the cable ports and have switched firewire cable.  The G-Drive powers up and whirls, so I don't believe the problem is with the drive. Yes, I set my Preferences to make sure ALL disk types are visible.  I've restarted my iMac on a number of occations.  I rest my SMC by totally unplugging my iMac for a minute, then plugging it back in. Any suggestions?

Unplug the HD, Zap the PRAM, reconnect the HD, power it up, and see if that fixes the problem. If not, then maybe the HDs bitten the dust. Try on another computer to verify.

    In Safari's preferences:
Look in the folder displayed where you see the arrow. The actual Downloads folder is found in your Home (user) folder.

  • Can you fit in a 7200rpm hard drive into a macbook?

    mac book pro is expensive.
my main concern about the black macbook is that the hard drive is less than 7200rpm. music software pro tools says to use 7200rpm drives.
so is there a way to put one in? it doesnt seem to be an option to upgrade on mac shop.
    pro is expensive!

Personally, I would recommend you try newegg.com they usually have very good deals. All you need to look for is a 2.5 inch hard drive (usually called a notebook drive or laptop drive). It also should be SATA. Other than that you can just look for whatever specs you would like. I would recommend Western Digital, Seagate, or Samsung as excellent brands. However, for the most part it wont matter too much. I recommend newegg, because it is the largest online computer retailer in the world (i think) and all of their products have good reviews so you can read up on how the hard drives have worked for other people. The hard drive that came stock in my macbook is a Fujitsu which is just another manufacturer. I would base your decision off of the specs and the ratings, not the manufacturer. Just remember 2.5" SATA
I bought from my 200 GB Travelstar 7K200 from Newegg myself. That being said, I doubt Newegg is the largest online computer retailer in the world; they've got an annual revenue rate of just under $2 billion. I'd think Dell would be bigger, although their $68 billion per year may include store sales now that they have boxed computers sold at other retailers. CDW is also bigger.
You forgot the most important spec. The drive height can't be more than 9.5 mm. There are a few oversized drives that are thicker and won't slide into a MacBook.
Best Buy (if you're in the US) has a 200 GB Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 kit complete with USB enclosure for $159.99. It comes in a full retail package, while most of the drives at Newegg come as bare drives in an antistatic bag. I actually paid more just for my drive from Newegg earlier this year, although the price has gone down.

  • Can I swap vintage MacBook Pro hard drives?

I have two vintage macs, one of which has a bad hard drive, so I'm considering moving the older [but much less used] hard drive to the newer machine. The smaller one is big enough for my needs, and I can't afford a new hard drive. Is this possible, and/or am I better off using the older machine [and the 10.6.8 OS that is the most it's architecture can handle, with a dvd drive that doesn't work]?
    'MacBook Pro C2D 2.5 15 08' and a 'MacBook Pro CD 2.0 15 [80GB version]'
    Thanks
    Jesse

Physically there will be no issue in swapping the two HDDs.  Where you may have a problem is the OSX.  A MBP cannot run an OSX older than it was originally designed for.  If a Mac came with 10.6, It cannot run 10.5 or earlier.
    Ciao.

  • Can I drag and drop entire hard drive into and external hard drive?

I want to back up my MacBook Pro before I send it in for optical drive replacement. However, the Time Machine back up app wants me to erase my external drive and reformat before it can back up my files. I already have information from other computers on the external drive, so erasing and restoring is out of the question.
Can I just drag and drop my hard drives (Macintosh HD and BOOTCAMP) into the external hard drive?
    Will that transfer everything?
As a side note, can anyone tell me why Time Machine doesn't work with the external drive? My dad has files on it from his Mac and I have a couple movies saved on it from this one. Is it possible to maybe partition the external drive to accommodate both and reformat only one partition without losing the other saved files?

    Hi
+"So does reformatting make the external hard drive only usable by Macs/Time Machine?"+
Not really. If the external drive is formatted as FAT32 you can read/write to that drive from any Mac as well as any PC. If the external drive is formatted as NTFS you can only read from it but you can read/write from any PC. You can write to an NTFS formatted volume if you use a 3rd-Party Utility such as MacFuse. If the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended you can read/write to it from any Mac. Unless you install a 3rd-Party Utility (I don't know of any offhand) you won't be able to read/write to it from any PC. PCs don't know what a Mac OS Extended format is.
As already mentioned TimeMachine will not work with any other format other than Mac OS Extended.
+"Will I be able to use the same external hard drive to back up multiple Mac computers with Time Machine?"+
Yes but only if that external drive has been formatted as Mac OS Extended. If there is existing data on that drive that you don't want to lose back it up first.
+"Will I still be able to drag and drop movies into the external hard drive for basic storage?"+
If you leave the external drive exactly as it is - ie no formatting - and you have already drag/dropped files to it from your mac or any other mac then you will be able to continue to do this.

No, do you? The OP asked if the drive can be connected.  It can but there may be limitations. Saying you cannot connect an NTFS drive is not correct, it is only partly correct. I know you know that.

  • Can't transfer iPhoto Library FROM external hard drive to iMac

I just bought a new iMac.  Before I said goodbye to my old computer (a MacBook), I dutifully backed up my iPhoto library onto an external hard drive.  Upon setting up my iMac, I easily accessed the iPhoto library on my HD, but I didn't import it.  I was able to see all photos, albums, etc.
But when I went to import the entire iPhoto library into my iMac's hard drive (into the Pictures folder), it wouldn't import.  A mesage comes up that says "Preparing to copy" and the blue-and-white bar just spins and spins, without actually copying anything.  So, it's weird -- there's clearly communication between iMac and external HD, but I can't take the iPhoto library off the hard drive to make it my new computer's iPhoto library.
    Any hints?  Thanks.

Have you tried restarting your machine?

  • Bad screen.  Will Apple Store swap my hard drive into new machine?

I got my Macbook Pro 15" a week ago.  Within a couple of days it developed a prominent green vertical line near the center of the screen, top to bottom.  I have a meeting with a genius tonight.  I assume they'll give my a whole new laptop.  Can they swap out my existing hard drive to the new laptop?  It's not that I have a ton of user data, it's more that I have installed boot camp and Windows 7 on the other partition and it would be pain to backup both partitions before this meeting.

So I took it to the Apple store tonight and they're going to replace the screen.  They didn't have one in stock so they'll order that and it will probably arrive mid-week.  Then I'll bring it back in, leave it overnight then come back again the next day.  Three visits for a broken screen on a week-old laptop!  I'm not too happy about that but at least I get to keep my HD.

  • I downloaded carbon copy. transferred entire internal hd  to new replacement HD  thru USB.  computer booted from replacement hrdrive. then installed replacement hard rive into iMac. when rebooting imac did not recognized new replacement hd.

i downloaded carbon copy. transferred entire internal hd  to new replacement HD  thru USB adapter kit.  computer booted from replacement hrdrive. then i erased the internal hardrive and reloaded the operating system.( i needed to find out if the hard drive was bad or virus/worm was the cause). then installed replacement hard drive into iMac. when rebooting, imac did not recognized new replacement hd. i also upgraded memory at the same time.  ok what did i do wrong. do i have to remove the new replacement hardrive to extract the data.

It should not matter. CCC will "clone" the recovery partition as well, but not knowing exactly what operation you had CCC perform it is difficult to know what may have gone wrong - it has many customizable options and you have to choose the correct one.
I have performed the same transplant as you described and didn't have a problem, but if your Mac is not recognizing the internal HD you really have no choice other than to reinitialize it as suggested. After that, install OS X, upgrade to Mountain Lion if required, and migrate your old account(s) from your backup.
    my backups have backups.
I assume you didn't mean that literally. Have redundant backups - don't "back up your backups".

Buy or borrow an external USB optical drive.
See the confirmation email or covering letter to obtain the serial number. If you have lost it, contact the supplier.

  • 2007 iMac, replaced hard drive, can't recover old files from old hard drive!

So I have a 2007 intell imac, the hard drive went out, I replaced it and bought a thermalake blacx hard drive doc to get my files off the old hard drive.  I run Disk Utility, it can see the old hard drive but it can't repair it or verify it.  Do I need to get a third party to get the info off hte old hard drive??? HELP!!!HELP!!!!!

You could use a data recovery service but that's going to be really expensive. You could also try a data recovery software like DataRescue III http://store.apple.com/us/product/TX415LL/A/prosoft-data-rescue-3
    Or DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
Either might help, I prefer DiskWarrior, but it's also possible that neither will. A hard lesson learned regarding backups I suppose.

  • HT204370 I have changed my internal hard drive on my macbook pro. I have put old hard drive into a capsule and have this plugged into my laptop. I can't find the movies on my old hard drive now? Any idea how I can move them to iTunes again? cloud taking H

I have just changed my internal Hard drive on my MacBook pro. I had recently downloaded some movies on iTunes which I want to put into my iTunes library on my new internal hard drive. I have put my old internal hard drive into an external capsule but when I open the icon of the hard drive from the desktop I can't find my movies.
At the moment I have the new movies downloading again from the cloud but it is literally taking hours for even one movie to load.
When I changed the internal hard drive I restored my info from my old external hard drive which hadn't been backed up in a month and hence does not have my latest movies...
I am concerned that I might go over my internet usage limit (flatmate is refusing to change to unlimited package!!!!) by downloading all the movies again from the cloud never mind how long it is taking...
Is there any way to restore all my info and media from the old internal Hard drive in the capsule as well as from the external hard drive?

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.
