Can I swap out my old HD when I upgrade....

Ordered an 15" i7 MBP. I'd like to swap my old HD out (256MB SSD), rather than go through the bother of reinstalling everything or even doing a Time Machine backup. Is this possible? What will happen when I try to boot the new machine with my old HD in it?
BTW - My old machine was a 15" Core 2 Duo unibody.

What will happen when I try to boot the new machine with my old HD in it?
Nothing, most likely. The OS installation that ran your old machine probably won't boot the new one.
Back the old drive up to an external drive using Time Machine or cloning software. With the old machine in FireWire Target Disk Mode, erase the old drive and clone the new MBP's hard drive onto it. Swap the two drives and test-boot the new machine to make sure the clone is OK. Then use Migration Assistant to migrate your data from the backup of the old drive onto the drive in the new MBP.
If you want to use or sell the older machine, use the discs that came with it to reinstall a suitable OS for it on the drive you took out of the new machine.

  • Can I swap out my old Areca 1880-ix with the newer Areca  ARC-1883

Hello everyone.  It's been a while since I've been here.
I think, but am not sure, that my Areca 1880-ix is dead. I'll be contacting Areca support to see if I can have them help me troubleshoot it.  Like they did a year or so ago.
In any case I see a new Areca  ARC-1883 added to their line.   Areca Technology Corporation and here Areca Technology Corporation
And if I can't get the old 1880-ix working, I am wondering what the Abobe forum's thought might be about this new Areca  ARC-1883.
To summarize, I have one system hard drive, and 4x 1TB hard drives = 4 TB.
Based on anyone's experience here, does such a swap make sense?
Looking forward to a discussion here about my choices.
I do see Bill's post here:  Upgrading HD Capacity Areca
    Thanks all!

    Hi Bill
Checking some of my older forum posts I found that I had encountered this issue before.
ASUS P6X58D Memory OK (MEMOK!) issue DRAM LED Stays solid red.
It turned out that my problem was just the motherboard's battery had died.  We're talking about a 99 cent battery!
I replaced the battery with a new one.
And the PC booted up just fine.
(This was after I totally disassembled the computer -- testing the power supply with the "paper clip" method, reconnecting all of my cables.
By chance, I found that old post.  And, at least for now, all is fine.
Great to have this forum and pros like you -- and Harm -- and all the others -- as a great place for troubleshooting and expert help!!!

  • Can I swap out old RAM with new before install of new HD?

I am replacing a friend's HD for her MacBook Pro 5,2 and also swapping out the old memory (2-2GBs) for new memory (2-4 GBs). My question is: does it matter whether I install the new memory before I install the HD or after? If after, does it matter whether or not the HD has been formatted? Has an OS installed on it? Any help here would be very much appreciated!

Your snow leopard dvd will format the HD properly to install the OS. Just replace the HD put in the snow leopard disc and let it do its thing

  • I need to change a new Apple id on the iPad but  I can not sign out the old Apple id on my iPad because I forgot the password and sec

I Need to change a new Apple id on the iPad but I can't sign out the old one because I forgot the password and the security question.

Yes, you can just log out of iCloud on the mini (Settings>iCloud> Sign out) and nothing will be affected as long as the iPad is not restored from any backup after that. Though if you're giving her the iPad I would highly recommend moving the pictures to your iPad (via this page) so that the mini can be reset and set up under your daughters ID to avoid Activation Lock in the future.

the benefit of this https scan feature is at least questionable. in order for it to work, avast has to perform a kind of man-in-the-middle "attack" in order to get to the content of the encrypted connection (firefox supports a feature called [http://monica-at-mozilla.blogspot.co.at/2014/08/firefox-32-supports-public-key-pinning.html key pinning] which can be used by websites to address such MITM attacks and which also seems to pick up AVAST's interference).
when you download files over a https-connection, they will be scanned by your AV software once they land on your hard-disk anyway. on the other hand it should be the job of the browser to make it impossible to get infected by malicious software by just surfing around...
''edit: please try to restart the browser again, it may take a new session for the change to take effect.''

  • Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses

Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses?  The hard drive on the TC quit working.

I do plan on using an external USB HDD for time machine backups.  I have both 802.11g and 802.11n used for playing music via stereos.
I would recommend against it. Apple does not support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks (USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme). Although folks have done so, we get a number of them here asking for help with their corrupted backups. If your backups are critical to you, please use another means (like connecting the USB HDD directly to your Mac) to do so.

  • HT1688 I have a damaged I-Phone and I need the contents of my calendar off of it. I did not have Mobile me at the time.  Can I swap out the sim card from the broken phone to a new phone and recover this calendar?

I have an older I-Phone (3G) that for some reason the body of the phone has split in two.  This phone was a business phone and it had a lot of important information on it. I have a second phone that is also a 3G.  On the broken phone there is a lot of important information that I need in my calendar. Im not worried about anything else but the calendar.  I didn't have the Mobile Me account at that time or I would be having this problem. Does anybody know if I can ust switch out the sim cards. I just need to recover the old calendar, so im hoping that the calendar will transfer when I switch the sim card into the good 3G. If that doesn't work does anybody know of anyway that I can retrieve this information off of this phone?

Nothing is stored on the sim card on an iPhone.  If you backed up to your computer the backup will contain your calendar events.  Otherwise, if your phone isn't functioning there is no way to back up or extract your calendar at this point.

  • Can't Swap out image in PDF

I have Acrobat CS3 on Mac, and I know nothing about using the app. I am trying to swap out an image in a PDF. I have poked around the interface quite  bit, but nothing works. I seem to be able to select the image, but the only options are to copy or save the image. I can't delete it or insert another image. I have an image prepared, same size as the one in the PDF, and I just want to swap them out. Any help much appreciated!

Acrobat isn't a design tool. Its editing tools are limited, klunky and a desperate last resort.
Perhaps the best bet is to select the image when in editing mode and chose right click - Edit. This will open in Photoshop. Then edit (perhaps paste in the replacements) and save and it will go back into Acrobat.

  • Apple id changed can't log out of old apple id

I changed my apple id (there was no instructions to do anything else) and now I can't log out of my old id on my iPhone or my iPad to log into the new id.
Searching through instructions, it says you have to log out first of all your devices - wouldn't that be good advice to give at the point of change and not have to dig through endless instructions? There are no instructions how to sign out of your other devices once your change your apple id on one device. That's not very consumer friendly.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • Can I swap out a iPhone 4 sim card into a iPhone 5 with the same carrier?

Here is the situation.  I used to have Sprint as my personal cellphone carrier and just had bought an iPhone 5 when my employer put me on a business cellphone plan that they pay for.  They bought one of the bargain basement original iPhone 4 handsets (not to be confused with the 4S) for employees to use, also on the Sprint network.  The phone is owned by them; the plan is paid for by them.  We just get to use it.  As a result, I decided to just close out my personal cellphone account, even though it was a better phone.  I used my 64GB iPhone 5 as my iPod, it worked great for music, apps, books, etc that I needed, and I just used the 8GB iPhone 4 just for phone calls and text messages.
Well recently, with the 5C and 5S being released, I wanted to know if the iPhone 4 could be upgraded by my employer to a new handset, preferably a 32 GB 5C or a 16 GB 5S.  My employer has been slow to respond, because there are so many employee accounts to weed through and most are perfectly fine with an older phone.  I am not, because the new operating system is slower on an iPhone 4 than an iPhone 5.
I want to ask my employer if its possible to get the SIM card from the iPhone 4 just swapped out into the iPhone 5.  Is that possible?  I understand that there is a size difference in the SIM cards.  Is this something I could do myself, just pop it out and pop it in in the new handset?  Or is this something that will require going to my employer to do, or to a Sprint store and have them do it?  Do I have to be concerned with warranties being voided if I want to do this? (Keep in mind the iPhone 4 is my EMPLOYER's property, and they pay the bill as well.  My inactive iPhone 5 is MY PROPERTY and has no current cellular service.)

I want to ask my employer if its possible to get the SIM card from the iPhone 4 just swapped out into the iPhone 5.  Is that possible?
No, iPhone 4/4S uses micro-sim and iPhone 5/5C/5S uses nano-sim.
